Uniformly resolvable decompositions of $K_v$ into $1$-factors and odd $n$-star factors
We consider uniformly resolvable decompositions of $K_v$ into subgraphs such that each resolution class contains only blocks isomorphic to the same graph. We give a partial solution for the case in which all resolution classes are either $K_2$ or $K_{1,n}$ where $n$ is odd.
Almost-perfect colorful matchings in three-edge-colored bipartite graphs
We prove that, for positive integers $n,a_1, a_2, a_3$ satisfying $a_1+a_2+a_3 = n-1$, it holds that any bipartite graph $G$ which is the union of three perfect matchings $M_1$, $M_2$, and $M_3$ on $2n$ vertices contains a matching $M$ such that $|M\cap M_i| =a_i$ for $i= 1,2,$ and $3$. The bound $n-1$ on the sum is best possible in general. Our result verifies the multiplicity extension of the Ryser-Brualdi-Stein Conjecture, proposed recently by Anastos, Fabian, Müyesser, and Szabó, for three colors.
Sunflowers and Ramsey problems for restricted intersections

Extremal problems on set systems with restricted intersections have been an important part of combinatorics in the last 70 year. In this paper, we study the following Ramsey version of these problems. Given a set $L\subseteq \{0,\dots,k-1\}$ and a family $\mathcal{F}$ of $k$-element sets which does not contain a sunflower with $m$ petals whose kernel size is in $L$, how large a subfamily of $\mathcal{F}$ can we find in which no pair has intersection size in $L$? We give matching upper and lower bounds, determining the dependence on $m$ for all $k$ and $L$. This problem also finds applications in quantum computing.
As an application of our techniques, we also obtain a variant of Füredi's celebrated semilattice lemma, which is a key tool in the powerful delta-system method. We prove that one cannot remove the double-exponential dependency on the uniformity in Füredi's result, however, we provide an alternative with significantly better, single-exponential dependency on the parameters, which is still strong enough for most applications of the delta-system method.

In this paper, we are interested in $4$-colouring algorithms for graphs that do not contain an induced path on $6$ vertices nor an induced bull, i.e., the graph with vertex set $\{v_1,v_2,v_3,v_4,v_5\}$ and edge set $\{v_1v_2,v_2v_3,v_3v_4,v_2v_5,v_3v_5\}$. Such graphs are referred to as $(P_6,\text{bull})$-free graphs. A graph $G$ is \emph{$k$-vertex-critical} if $χ(G)=k$, and every proper induced subgraph $H$ of $G$ has $χ(H)<k$. In the current paper, we investigate the structure of $5$-vertex-critical $(P_6,\text{bull})$-free graphs and show that there are only finitely many such graphs, thereby answering a question of Maffray and Pastor. A direct corollary of this is that there exists a polynomial-time algorithm to decide if a $(P_6,\text{bull})$-free graph is $4$-colourable such that this algorithm can also provide a certificate that can be verified in polynomial time and serves as a proof of 4-colourability or non-4-colourability.
Discrepancy of Arithmetic Progressions in Boxes and Convex Bodies

The combinatorial discrepancy of arithmetic progressions inside $[N] := \{1, \ldots, N\}$ is the smallest integer $D$ for which $[N]$ can be colored with two colors so that any arithmetic progression in $[N]$ contains at most $D$ more elements from one color class than the other. Bounding the discrepancy of such set systems is a classical problem in discrepancy theory. More recently, this problem was generalized to arithmetic progressions in grids like $[N]^d$ (Valk{ó}) and $[N_1]\times \ldots \times [N_d]$ (Fox, Xu, and Zhou). In the latter setting, Fox, Xu, and Zhou gave upper and lower bounds on the discrepancy that match within a $\frac{\log |Ω|}{\log \log |Ω|}$ factor, where $Ω:= [N_1]\times \ldots \times [N_d]$ is the ground set. In this work, we use the connection between factorization norms and discrepancy to improve their upper bound to be within a $\sqrt{\log|Ω|}$ factor from the lower bound. We also generalize Fox, Xu, and Zhou's lower bound, and our upper bounds to arithmetic progressions in arbitrary convex bodies.

Using cyclotomy, we construct a new infinite family of Neumaier graphs that includes infinitely many strongly regular graphs. Notably, this family conjecturally contains infinitely many graphs with coherent rank $6$. Our construction also provides the first known examples that answer a question posed by Evans, Goryainov, and Panasenko regarding the existence of Neumaier graphs whose nexus is not a power of $2$. In addition, we show that a construction of Greaves and Koolen yields an infinite family of Neumaier graphs with coherent rank $6$.
Avoshifts, Unishifts and Nondeterministic Cellular Automata
In this paper, we study avoshifts and unishifts on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. Avoshifts are subshifts where for each convex set $C$, and each vector $v$ such that $C \cup \{\vec v\}$ is also convex, the set of valid extensions of globally valid patterns on $C$ to ones on $C \cup \{v\}$ is determined by a bounded subpattern of $C$. Unishifts are the subshifts where for such $C, \vec v$, every $C$-pattern has the same number of $\vec v$-extensions. Cellwise quasigroup shifts (including group shifts) and TEP subshifts are examples of unishifts, while unishifts and subshifts with topological strong spatial mixing are examples of avoshifts. We prove that every avoshift is the spacetime subshift of a nondeterministic cellular automaton on an avoshift of lower dimension up to a linear transformation and a convex blocking. From this, we deduce that all avoshifts contain periodic points, and that unishifts have dense periodic points and admit equal entropy full shift factors.
Arbitrary orientations of cycles in oriented graphs
We show that every sufficiently large oriented graph $G$ with minimum indegree and outdegree both at least $(3|V(G)|-1)/8$ contains every orientation of a Hamilton cycle. This result improves the approximate bound established by Kelly and resolves a long-standing problem posed by Häggkvist and Thomason in 1995. The degree condition is tight and it can be improved to $(3|V(G)|-4)/8$ for Hamilton cycles that are nearly directed, generalizing a classic result by Keevash, Kühn and Osthus. Additionally, we derive a pancyclicity result for arbitrary orientations. More precisely, the above degree condition suffices to guarantee the existence of cycles of every possible orientation and every possible length unless $G$ is isomorphic to one of the exceptional oriented graphs.

A chorded cycle in a graph $G$ is a cycle on which two nonadjacent vertices are adjacent in the graph $G$. In 2010, Gao and Qiao independently proved a graph of order at least $4s$, in which the neighborhood union of any two nonadjacent vertices has at least $4s+1$ vertices, contains $s$ vertex-disjoint chorded cycles. In 2022, Gould raised a problem that asks whether increasing connectivity would improve the neighborhood union condition. In this paper, we solve the problem for $2$-connected graphs by
proving that a $2$-connected graph of order at least $4s$, in which the neighborhood union of any two nonadjacent vertices has at least $4s$ vertices, contains $s$ vertex-disjoint chorded cycles.
A permutation based approach to the $q$-deformation of the Dynkin Operator
Introduced by Solomon, the descent algebra is a significant subalgebra of the group algebra of the symmetric group $\mathbf{k}S_n$ related to many important algebraic and combinatorial topics. It contains all the classical Lie idempotents of $\mathbf{k}S_n$, in particular the Dynkin operator, a fundamental tool for studying the free Lie algebra. We look at a $q$-deformation of the Dynkin operator and study its action over the descent algebra with classical combinatorial tools like Solomon's Mackey formula. This leads to elementary proofs that the operator is indeed an idempotent for $q=1$ as well as to interesting formulas and algebraic structures especially when $q$ is a root of unity.
Degree sum conditions and a 2-factor with a bounded number of cycles in claw-free graphs

A claw-free graph is a graph that does not contain $K_{1,3}$ as an induced subgraph, and a 2-factor is a 2-regular spanning subgraph of a graph. In 1997, Ryjáček introduced the closure concept of claw-free graphs, and Hamilton cycles and related structures in claw-free graphs have been intensively studied via the closure concept. In this paper, using the closure concept, we show that for a claw-free graph $G$ of order $n$, if every independent set $I$ of $G$ satisfies $|I|\leq δ_G(I)-1$ and $G$ satisfies $σ_{k+1}(G)\geq n$, then $G$ has a 2-factor with at most $k$ cycles, where $δ_G(I)$ denotes the minimum degree of the vertices in $I$. As a corollary of the result, we show that every claw-free graph $G$ with $δ(G)\geq α(G)+1$ has a 2-factor with at most $α(G)$ cycles, which partially solves a conjecture by Faudree et al. in 2012.
Infinite unrestricted sumsets in subsets of abelian groups with large density
Let $(G,+)$ be a countable abelian group such that the subgroup $\{g+g\colon g\in G\}$ has finite index and the doubling map $g\mapsto g+g$ has finite kernel. We establish lower bounds on the upper density of a set $A\subset G$ with respect to an appropriate Følner sequence, so that $A$ contains a sumset of the form $\{t+b_1+b_2\colon b_1,b_2\in B\}$ or $\{b_1+b_2\colon b_1,b_2\in B\}$, for some infinite $B\subset G$ and some $t\in G$. Both assumptions on $G$ are necessary for our results to be true. We also characterize the Følner sequences for which this is possible. Finally, we show that our lower bounds are optimal in a strong sense.
Sublevels in arrangements and the spherical arc crossing number of complete graphs
Levels and sublevels in arrangements -- and, dually, $k$-sets and $(\leq k)$-sets -- are fundamental notions in discrete and computational geometry and natural generalizations of convex polytopes, which correspond to the $0$-level. A long-standing conjecture of Eckhoff, Linhart, and Welzl, which would generalize McMullen's Upper Bound Theorem for polytopes and provide an exact refinement of asymptotic bounds by Clarkson, asserts that for all $k\leq \lfloor \frac{n-d-2}{2}\rfloor$, the number of $(\leq k)$-sets of a set $S$ of $n$ points in $\mathbf{R}^d$ is maximized if $S$ is the vertex set of a neighborly polytope.
As a new tool for studying this conjecture and related problems, we introduce the $g$-matrix, which generalizes both the $g$-vector of a simple polytope and a Gale dual version of the $g$-vector studied by Lee and Welzl. Our main result is that the $g$-matrix of every vector configuration in $\mathbf{R}^3$ is non-negative, which implies the Eckhoff--Linhart--Welzl conjecture in the case where $d=n-4$.
As a corollary, we obtain the following result about crossing numbers: Consider a configuration $V\subset S^2 \subset \mathbf{R}^3$ of $n$ unit vectors, and connect every pair of vectors by the unique shortest geodesic arc between them in the unit sphere $S^2$. This yields a drawing of the complete graph $K_n$ in $S^2$, which we call a spherical arc drawing. Complementing previous results for rectilinear drawings, we show that the number of crossings in any spherical arc drawing of $K_n$ is at least $\frac{1}{4}\lfloor \frac{n}{2}\rfloor \lfloor \frac{n-1}{2}\rfloor \lfloor \frac{n-2}{2}\rfloor \lfloor \frac{n-3}{2}\rfloor$, which equals the conjectured value of the crossing number of $K_n$. Moreover, the lower bound is attained if $V$ is coneighborly, i.e., if every open linear halfspace contains at least $\lfloor (n-2)/2 \rfloor$ of the vectors in $V$.
The signless Laplacian spectral Turán problems for color-critical graphs

The well-known Turán theorem states that if $G$ is an $n$-vertex $K_{r+1}$-free graph, then $e(G)\le e(T_{n,r})$, with equality if and only if $G$ is the $r$-partite Turán graph $T_{n,r}$. A graph $F$ is called color-critical if it contains an edge whose deletion reduces its chromatic number. Extending the Turán theorem, Simonovits (1968) proved that for any color-critical graph $F$ with $χ(F)=r+1$ and sufficiently large $n$, the Turán graph $T_{n,r}$ is the unique graph with maximum number of edges among all $n$-vertex $F$-free graphs. Subsequently, Nikiforov [Electron. J. Combin., 16 (1) (2009)] proved a spectral version of the Simonovits theorem in terms of the adjacency spectral radius. In this paper, we show an extension of the Simonovits theorem for the signless Laplacian spectral radius. We prove that for any color-critical graph $F$ with $χ(F)=r+1\ge 4$ and sufficiently large $n$, if $G$ is an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices, then $q(G)\le q(T_{n,r})$, with equality if and only if $G=T_{n,r}$. Our approach is to establish a signless Laplacian spectral version of the criterion of Keevash, Lenz and Mubayi [SIAM J. Discrete Math., 28 (4) (2014)]. Consequently, we can determine the signless Laplacian spectral extremal graphs for generalized books and even wheels. As an application, our result gives an upper bound on the degree power of an $F$-free graph. We show that if $n$ is sufficiently large and $G$ is an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices with $m$ edges, then $\sum_{v\in V(G)} d^2(v) \le 2(1- \frac{1}{r})mn$, with equality if and only if $G$ is a regular Turán graph $T_{n,r}$. This extends a result of Nikiforov and Rousseau [J. Combin. Theory Ser B 92 (2004)].
Canonical forms of polytopes from adjoints
Projectivizations of pointed polyhedral cones $C$ are positive geometries in the sense of Arkani-Hamed, Bai, and Lam. Their canonical forms look like $$ Ω_C(x)=\frac{A(x)}{B(x)} dx, $$ with $A,B$ polynomials. The denominator $B(x)$ is just the product of the linear equations defining the facets of $C$. We will see that the numerator $A(x)$ is given by the adjoint polynomial of the dual cone $C^{\vee}$. The adjoint was originally defined by Warren, who used it to construct barycentric coordinates in general polytopes. Confirming the intuition that the job of the numerator is to cancel unwanted poles outside the polytope, we will see that the adjoint is the unique polynomial of minimal degree whose hypersurface contains the residual arrangement of non-face intersections of supporting hyperplanes of $C$.
Characterization of $P_3$-connected graphs
For any pair of edges $e,f$ of a graph $G$, we say that {\em $e,f$ are $P_3$-connected in $G$} if there exists a sequence of edges $e=e_0,e_1,\ldots, e_k=f$ such that $e_i$ and $e_{i+1}$ are two edges of an induced $3$-vertex path in $G$ for every $0\leq i\leq k-1$. If every pair of edges of $G$ are $P_3$-connected in $G$, then $G$ is {\em $P_3$-connected}. $P_3$-connectivity was first defined by Chudnovsky et al. in 2024 to prove that every connected graph not containing $P_5$ as an induced subgraph has cop number at most two. In this paper, we give a characterization of $P_3$-connected graphs and prove that a simple graph is $P_3$-connected if and only if it is connected and has no homogeneous set whose induced subgraph contains an edge.
$K_4^-$-free triple systems without large stars in the complement
The $n$-star $S_n$ is the $n$-vertex triple system with ${n-1 \choose 2}$ edges all of which contain a fixed vertex, and $K_4^-$ is the unique triple system with four vertices and three edges. We prove that the Ramsey number $r(K_4^-, S_n)$ has order of magnitude $n^2 /\log n$.
This confirms a conjecture of Conlon, Fox, He, Suk, Verstraëte and the first author. It also generalizes the well-known bound of Kim for the graph Ramsey number $r(3,n)$, as the link of any vertex in a $K_4^-$-free triple system is a triangle-free graph. Our method builds on the approach of Guo and Warnke who adapted Kim's lower bound for $r(3,n)$ to the pseudorandom setting.
The Density Finite Sums Theorem

For any set $A$ of natural numbers with positive upper Banach density and any $k\geq 1$, we show the existence of an infinite set $B\subset{\mathbb N}$ and a shift $t\geq0$ such that $A-t$ contains all sums of $m$ distinct elements from $B$ for all $m\in\{1,\ldots,k\}$. This can be viewed as a density analog of Hindman's finite sums theorem. Our proof reveals the natural relationships among infinite sumsets, the dynamics underpinning arithmetic progressions, and homogeneous spaces of nilpotent Lie groups.
Enumeration on polyominoes determined by Catalan words avoiding $(\geq,\geq)$

A Catalan word of length $n$ that avoids the pattern $(\geq, \geq)$ is a sequence $w=w_1\cdots w_n$ with $w_1=0$ and $0\leq w_i\leq w_{i-1}+1$ for all $i$, while ensuring that no subsequence satisfies $w_i \geq w_{i+1}\geq w_{i+2}$ for $i=2,\ldots,n$. These words are enumerated by the $n$-th Motzkin number. From such a word, we associate a $n$-column Motzkin polyomino (called a $(\geq,\geq)$-polyomino), where the $i$-th column contains $w_i+1$ bottom-aligned cells. In this paper, we derive generating functions for $(\geq,\geq)$-polyominoes based on their length, area, semiperimeter, last symbol value, and number of interior points. We provide asymptotic analyses and closed-form expressions for the total area, total semiperimeter, sum of the last symbol values, and total number of interior points across all $(\geq,\geq)$-polyominoes of a given length. Finally, we express all these results as linear combinations of trinomial coefficients.

An $r$-uniform linear cycle of length $\ell$, denoted by $C^r_{\ell}$, is an $r$-graph with $\ell$ edges $e_1,e_2,\dots,e_{\ell}$ where $e_i=\{v_{(r-1)(i-1)},v_{(r-1)(i-1)+1},\dots,v_{(r-1)i}\}$ (here $v_0=v_{(r-1)\ell}$). For $0<δ<1$ and $n$ sufficiently large, we show that every $n$-vertex $r$-graph $G$ with $n^{r-δ}$ edges contains at least $n^{(r-1)(2\ell+1)-δ(2\ell+1+\frac{4\ell-1}{(r-1)(2\ell+1)-3})-o(1)}$ copies of $C^r_{2\ell+1}$. Further, conditioning on the existence of dense high-girth hypergraphs, we show that there exists $n$-vertex $r$-graphs with $n^{r-δ}$ edges and at most $n^{(r-1)(2\ell+1)-δ(2\ell+1+\frac{1}{(r-1)\ell-1})+o(1)}$ copies of $C^r_{2\ell+1}$.
