Let $\mathcal P_Φ$ be the root polytope of a finite irreducible crystallographic root system $Φ$, i.e., the convex hull of all roots in $Φ$. The polar of $\mathcal P_Φ$, denoted $\mathcal P_Φ^*$, coincides with the union of the orbit of the fundamental alcove under the action of the Weyl group. In this paper, we establishes which polytopes $\mathcal P_Φ^*$ are zonotopes and which are not. The proof is constructive.
Supersolvability and the Koszul property of root ideal arrangements

A root ideal arrangement $A_I$ is the set of reflecting hyperplanes corresponding to the roots in an order ideal $I$ of the root poset on the positive roots of a finite crystallographic root system. A characterisation of supersolvable root ideal arrangements is obtained. Namely, $A_I$ is supersolvable if and only if $I$ is chain peelable, meaning that it is possible to reach the empty poset from $I$ by in each step removing a maximal chain which is also an order filter. In particular, supersolvability is preserved under taking subideals. We identify the minimal ideals that correspond to non-supersolvable arrangements. There are essentially two such ideals, one in type $D_4$ and one in type $F_4$. By showing that $A_I$ is not line-closed if $I$ contains one of these, we deduce that the Orlik-Solomon algebra $OS(A_I)$ has the Koszul property if and only if $A_I$ is supersolvable.
The Steinberg torus of a Weyl group as a module over the Coxeter complex

Associated to each irreducible crystallographic root system $Φ$, there is a certain cell complex structure on the torus obtained as the quotient of the ambient space by the coroot lattice of $Φ$. This is the Steinberg torus. A main goal of this paper is to exhibit a module structure on (the set of faces of) this complex over the (set of faces of the) Coxeter complex of $Φ$. The latter is a monoid under the Tits product of faces. The module structure is obtained from geometric considerations involving affine hyperplane arrangements. As a consequence, a module structure is obtained on the space spanned by affine descent classes of a Weyl group, over the space spanned by ordinary descent classes. The latter constitute a subalgebra of the group algebra, the classical descent algebra of Solomon. We provide combinatorial models for the module of faces when $Φ$ is of type $A$ or $C$.
On floors and ceilings of the k-Catalan arrangement

The set of dominant regions of the $k$-Catalan arrangement of a crystallographic root system $Φ$ is a well-studied object enumerated by the Fuß-Catalan number $Cat^{(k)}(Φ)$. It is natural to refine this enumeration by considering floors and ceilings of dominant regions. A conjecture of Armstrong states that counting dominant regions by their number of floors of a certain height gives the same distribution as counting dominant regions by their number of ceilings of the same height. We prove this conjecture using a bijection that provides even more refined enumerative information.

The paper surveys highlights of the ongoing program to classify discrete polyhedral structures in Euclidean 3-space by distinguished transitivity properties of their symmetry groups, focussing in particular on various aspects of the classification of regular polygonal complexes, chiral polyhedra, and more generally, two-orbit polyhedra.
A categorification of non-crossing partitions

We present a categorification of the non-crossing partitions given by crystallographic Coxeter groups. This involves a category of certain bilinear lattices, which are essentially determined by a symmetrisable generalised Cartan matrix together with a particular choice of a Coxeter element. Examples arise from Grothendieck groups of hereditary artin algebras.

To a crystallographic root system Φ, and a positive integer k, there are associated two Fuss-Catalan objects, the set of nonnesting partitions NN^(k)(Φ), and the cluster complex Δ^(k)(Φ). These posess a number of enumerative coincidences, many of which are captured in a surprising identity, first conjectured by Chapoton for k=1 and later generalized to k>1 by Armstrong. We prove this conjecture, obtaining some structural and enumerative results on NN^(k)(Φ) along the way, including an earlier conjecture by Fomin and Reading giving a refined enumeration by Fuß-Narayana numbers.

We give a combinatorial characterization of minimally rigid planar frameworks with orientation-preserving crystallographic symmetry, under the constraint of forced symmetry. The main theorems are proved by extending the methods of the first paper in this sequence from groups generated by a single rotation to groups generated by translations and rotations. The proofs make use of a new family of matroids defined on crystallographic groups and associated submodular functions.
The coincidence problem for shifted lattices and crystallographic point packings

A coincidence site lattice is a sublattice formed by the intersection of a lattice $Γ$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with the image of $Γ$ under a linear isometry. Such a linear isometry is referred to as a linear coincidence isometry of $Γ$. Here, we consider the more general case allowing any affine isometry. Consequently, general results on coincidence isometries of shifted copies of lattices, and of crystallographic point packings are obtained. In particular, we discuss the shifted square lattice and the diamond packing in detail.

We discuss properties of root posets for finite crystallographic root systems, and show that these properties uniquely determine root posets for the noncrystallographic dihedral types and type $H_3$, while proving that there does not exist a poset satisfying all of the properties in type $H_4$. We do this by exhaustive computer searches for posets having these properties. We further give a realization of the poset of type $H_3$ as restricted roots of type $D_6$, and conjecture a Hilbert polynomial for the $q,t$-Catalan numbers for type $H_4$.

From a combinatorial perspective, we establish three inequalities on coefficients of $R$- and Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for crystallographic Coxeter groups: (1) Nonnegativity of $(q-1)$-coefficients of $R$-polynomials, (2) a new criterion of rational singularities of Bruhat intervals by sum of quadratic coefficients of $R$-polynomials, (3) existence of a certain strict inequality (coefficientwise) of Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. Our main idea is to understand Deodhar's inequality in a connection with a sum of $R$-polynomials and edges of Bruhat graphs.
Root polytope and partitions
Given a crystallographic reduced root system and an element v of the lattice generated by the roots we study the minimum number |v|, called the length of v, of roots needed to express v as sum of roots. This number is related to the linear functionals presenting the convex hull of the roots; the map v --> |v| turns out to be piecewise quasi-linear with quasi-linearity domains the cones over the facets of this convex hull. In order to show this relation we investigate the integral closure of the monoid generated by the roots in a facet. We study also the positive lenght, i.e. the minimum number of positive roots needed to write an element, and we prove that the two notions of length coincide for type A and C.
Matroids of Gain Graphs in Applied Discrete Geometry

A G-gain graph is a graph whose oriented edges are labeled invertibly from a group G. Zaslavsky proposed two matroids of G-gain graphs, called frame matroids and lift matroids, and investigated linear representations of them. Each matroid has a canonical representation over a field F if G is isomorphic to a subgroup of F^{\times} in the case of frame matroids or G is isomorphic to an additive subgroup of F in the case of lift matroids. The canonical representation of the frame matroid of a complete graph is also known as a Dowling geometry, as it was first introduced by Dowling for finite groups.
In this paper, we extend these matroids in two ways. The first one is extending the rank function of each matroid, based on submodular functions over G. The resulting rank function generalizes that of the union of frame matroids or lift matroids. Another one is extending the canonical linear representation of the union of d copies of a frame matroid or a lift matroid, based on linear representations of G on a d-dimensional vector space. We show that linear matroids of the latter extension are indeed special cases of the first extensions, as in the relation between Dowling geometries and frame matroids. We also discuss an attempt to unify the extension of frame matroids and that of lift matroids.
This work is motivated from recent research on the combinatorial rigidity of symmetric graphs. As special cases, we give several new results on this topic, including combinatorial characterizations of the symmetry-forced rigidity of generic body-bar frameworks with point group symmetries or crystallographic symmetries and the symmetric parallel redrawability of generic bar-joint frameworks with point group symmetries or crystallographic symmetries.

We study the root polytope $\mathcal P_Φ$ of a finite irreducible crystallographic root system $Φ$ using its relation with the abelian ideals of a Borel subalgebra of a simple Lie algebra with root system $Φ$. We determine the hyperplane arrangement corresponding to the faces of codimension 2 of $\mathcal P_Φ$ and analyze its relation with the facets of $\mathcal P_Φ$. For $Φ$ of type $A_n$ or $C_n$, we show that the orbits of some special subsets of abelian ideals under the action of the Weyl group parametrize a triangulation of $\mathcal P_Φ$. We show that this triangulation restricts to a triangulation of the positive root polytope $\mathcal P_Φ^+$.
Parking Structures: Fuss Analogs

For any irreducible real reflection group $W$ with Coxeter number $h$, Armstrong, Reiner, and the author introduced a pair of $W \times \ZZ_h$-modules which deserve to be called {\sf $W$-parking spaces} which generalize the type A notion of parking functions and conjectured a relationship between them. In this paper we give a Fuss analog of their constructions.
For a Fuss parameter $k \geq 1$, we define a pair of $W \times \ZZ_{kh}$-modules which deserve to be called {\sf $k$-$W$-parking spaces} and conjecture a relationship between them. We prove the weakest version of our conjectures for each of the infinite families ABCDI of finite reflection groups, together with proofs of stronger versions in special cases. Whenever our weakest conjecture holds for $W$, we have the following corollaries. First, there is a simple formula for the character of either $k$-$W$-parking space. Second, we recover a cyclic sieving result due to Krattenthaler and Müller which gives the cycle structure of a generalized rotation action on $k$-$W$-noncrossing partitions. Finally, when $W$ is crystallographic, the restriction of either $k$-$W$-parking space to $W$ isomorphic to the action of $W$ on the finite torus $Q / (kh+1)Q$, where $Q$ is the root lattice.
Parking Spaces

Let $W$ be a Weyl group with root lattice $Q$ and Coxeter number $h$. The elements of the finite torus $Q/(h+1)Q$ are called the $W$-{\sf parking functions}, and we call the permutation representation of $W$ on the set of $W$-parking functions the (standard) $W$-{\sf parking space}. Parking spaces have interesting connections to enumerative combinatorics, diagonal harmonics, and rational Cherednik algebras. In this paper we define two new $W$-parking spaces, called the {\sf noncrossing parking space} and the {\sf algebraic parking space}, with the following features: 1) They are defined more generally for real reflection groups. 2) They carry not just $W$-actions, but $W\times C$-actions, where $C$ is the cyclic subgroup of $W$ generated by a Coxeter element. 3) In the crystallographic case, both are isomorphic to the standard $W$-parking space. Our Main Conjecture is that the two new parking spaces are isomorphic to each other as permutation representations of $W\times C$. This conjecture ties together several threads in the Catalan combinatorics of finite reflection groups. We provide evidence for the conjecture, proofs of some special cases, and suggest further directions for the theory.

Generic rigidity of frameworks with orientation-preserving crystallographic symmetry
We extend our generic rigidity theory for periodic frameworks in the plane to frameworks with a broader class of crystallographic symmetry. Along the way we introduce a new class of combinatorial matroids and associated linear representation results that may be interesting in their own right. The same techniques immediately yield a Maxwell-Laman-type combinatorial characterization for frameworks embedded in 2-dimensional cones that arise as quotients of the plane by a finite order rotation.
