Eigenvalues, Smith normal form and determinantal ideals
Determinantal ideals of graphs generalize, among others, the spectrum and the Smith normal form (SNF) of integer matrices associated to graphs. In this work we investigate the relationship of the spectrum and the SNF with the determinantal ideals. We show that an eigenvalue divides the $k$-th invariant factor of its SNF if the eigenvalue belongs to a variety of the $k$-th univariate integer determinantal ideal of the matrix. This result has as a corollary a theorem of Rushanan. We also study graphs having the same determinantal ideals with at most one indeterminate; the socalled codeterminantal graphs, which generalize the concepts of cospectral and coinvariant graphs. We establish a necessary and sufficient condition for graphs to be codeterminantal on $\mathbb{R}[x]$, and we present some computational results on codeterminantal graphs up to 9 vertices. Finally, we show that complete graphs and star graphs are determined by the SNF of its distance Laplacian matrix.

The slack ideal of a polytope is a saturated determinantal ideal that gives rise to a new model for the realization space of the polytope. The simplest slack ideals are toric and have connections to projectively unique polytopes. We prove that if a projectively unique polytope has a toric slack ideal, then it is the toric ideal of the bipartite graph of vertex-facet non-incidences of the polytope. The slack ideal of a polytope is contained in this toric ideal if and only if the polytope is morally 2-level, a generalization of the 2-level property in polytopes. We show that polytopes that do not admit rational realizations cannot have toric slack ideals. A classical example of a projectively unique polytope with no rational realizations is due to Perles. We prove that the slack ideal of the Perles polytope is reducible, providing the first example of a slack ideal that is not prime.

The uniform probability measure on a convex polytope induces piecewise polynomial densities on its projections. For a fixed combinatorial type of simplicial polytopes, the moments of these measures are rational functions in the vertex coordinates. We study projective varieties that are parametrized by finite collections of such rational functions. Our focus lies on determining the prime ideals of these moment varieties. Special cases include Hankel determinantal ideals for polytopal splines on line segments, and the relations among multisymmetric functions given by the cumulants of a simplex. In general, our moment varieties are more complicated than in these two special cases. They offer challenges for both numerical and symbolic computing in algebraic geometry.

We introduce a new model for the realization space of a matroid, which is obtained from a variety defined by a saturated determinantal ideal, called the slack ideal, coming from the vertex-hyperplane incidence matrix of the matroid. This is inspired by a similar model for the slack realization space of a polytope. We show how to use these ideas to certify non-realizability of matroids, and describe an explicit relationship to the standard Grassmann-Plücker realization space model. We also exhibit a way of detecting projectively unique matroids via their slack ideals by introducing a toric ideal that can be associated to any matroid.

Motivated by questions in algebra and combinatorics we study two ideals associated to a simple graph G:
--> the Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideal defining the d-dimensional orthogonal representations of the graph complementary to G and
--> the determinantal ideal of the (d+1)-minors of a generic symmetric with 0s in positions prescribed by the graph G.
In characteristic 0 these two ideals turns out to be closely related and algebraic properties such as being radical, prime or a complete intersection transfer from the Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideal to the determinantal ideal. For Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideals we link these properties to combinatorial properties of G and show that they always hold for d large enough. For specific classes of graph, such a forests, we can give a complete picture and classify the radical, prime and complete intersection Lovasz-Saks-Schrijver ideals.

Let $X$ be a matrix with entries in a polynomial ring over an algebraically closed field $K$. We prove that, if the entries of $X$ outside some $(t \times t)$-submatrix are algebraically dependent over $K$, the arithmetical rank of the ideal $I_t(X)$ of $t$-minors of $X$ drops at least by one with respect to the generic case; under suitable assumptions, it drops at least by $k$ if $X$ has $k$ zero entries. This upper bound turns out to be sharp if $\mathrm{char}\, K=0$, since it then coincides with the lower bound provided by the local cohomological dimension.
Poset ideals of P-partitions and generalized letterplace and determinantal ideals
For any finite poset $P$ we have the poset of isotone maps $\text{Hom}(P,\mathbb{N})$, also called $P^{op}$-partitions. To any poset ideal ${\mathcal J}$ in $\text{Hom}(P,\mathbb{N})$, finite or infinite, we associate monomial ideals: the letterplace ideal $L({\mathcal J},P)$ and the Alexander dual co-letterplace ideal $L(P,{\mathcal J})$, and study them. We derive a class of monomial ideals in $k[x_p, p \in P]$ called $P$-stable. When $P$ is a chain we establish a duality on strongly stable ideals. We study the case when ${\mathcal J}$ is a principal poset ideal. When $P$ is a chain we construct a new class of determinantal ideals which generalizes ideals of {\it maximal} minors and whose initial ideals are letterplace ideals of prinicpal poset ideals.

In this paper we introduce a natural model for the realization space of a polytope up to projective equivalence which we call the slack realization space of the polytope. The model arises from the positive part of an algebraic variety determined by the slack ideal of the polytope. This is a saturated determinantal ideal that encodes the combinatorics of the polytope. We also derive a new model of the realization space of a polytope from the positive part of the variety of a related ideal. The slack ideal offers an effective computational framework for several classical questions about polytopes such as rational realizability, non-prescribability of faces, and realizability of combinatorial polytopes.

Given finite posets $P$ and $Q$, we consider a specific ideal $L(P,Q)$, whose minimal monomial generators correspond to order-preserving maps $φ:P\rightarrow Q$. We study algebraic invariants of those ideals. In particular, sharp lower and upper bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the projective dimension are provided. Precise formulas are obtained for a large subclass of these ideals. Moreover, we provide complete characterizations for several algebraic properties of $L(P,Q)$, including being Buchsbaum, Cohen-Macaulay, Gorenstein and having a linear resolution. We also give a partial characterization for Golod property of $L(P,Q)$. Using those results, we derive applications for other important classes of monomial ideals, such as initial ideals of determinantal ideals and multichain ideals.
Critical ideals of trees
Given a graph $G=(V, E)$, its generalized Laplacian matrix is given by \[ L(G,X_G)_{u,v}= \begin{cases} x_u&\text{if }u=v,\\ -m_{uv}&\text{if }u\neq v, \end{cases} \] where $X_G=\{x_u\, | \, u\in V(G)\}$ is a set of indeterminates and $m_{uv}$ is the number of edges between $u$ and $v$. The $j$-critical ideal of $G$ is the determinantal ideal generated by the minors of size $j$ of $L(G, X)$. A $2$-matching of $G$ is a subset $\mathcal{M}$ of its edges such that every vertex of $G$ has at most two incident edges in $\mathcal{M}$. We give a combinatorial description of a set of generators of the $j$-critical ideal of a tree $T$ as a function of a set of special $2$-matchings, which we called minimal, of the graph $T^\ell$ obtained from $T$ by adding a loop at each of its vertices. Also, we prove that the algebraic co-rank of $T$ is equal to the $2$-matching number of $T$, the maximum number of edges of a $2$-matching of $T$. As a consequence, one can compute each invariant factor of the critical group of any graph $G$ such that $G\setminus v$ is a tree for some of its vertices $v$, as the greatest common divisor of the evaluation of some polynomials associated to the minimal $2$-matchings of $T^\ell$. For instance, in the regular case, we recover some of the results obtained by Levine and Toumpakari about the critical group of a wired regular tree. Additionally, we can prove that the path $P_n$ is the unique simple graph with $n$ vertices and $n-1$ trivial critical ideals. We conjecture that the set of generators that we give is a reduced Gröbner basis and we can prove this for the $|V(T)|-1$-critical ideal. Finally, we apply the result in order to calculate the critical ideals of trees with depth two and some arithmetical trees associated to the reduction of elliptic curves of Kodaira type $I_n^*$.

Subword complexes are simplicial complexes introduced by Knutson and Miller to illustrate the combinatorics of Schubert polynomials and determinantal ideals. They proved that any subword complex is homeomorphic to a ball or a sphere and asked about their geometric realizations. We show that a family of subword complexes can be realized geometrically via regular triangulations of root polytopes. This implies that a family of $β$-Grothendieck polynomials are special cases of reduced forms in the subdivision algebra of root polytopes. We can also write the volume and Ehrhart series of root polytopes in terms of $β$-Grothendieck polynomials.

We investigate Rees algebras and special fiber rings obtained by blowing up specialized Ferrers ideals. This class of monomial ideals includes strongly stable monomial ideals generated in degree two and edge ideals of prominent classes of graphs. We identify the equations of these blow-up algebras. They generate determinantal ideals associated to subregions of a generic symmetric matrix, which may have holes. Exhibiting Gröbner bases for these ideals and using methods from Gorenstein liaison theory, we show that these determinantal rings are normal Cohen-Macaulay domains that are Koszul, that the initial ideals correspond to vertex decomposable simplicial complexes, and we determine their Hilbert functions and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularities. As a consequence, we find explicit minimal reductions for all Ferrers and many specialized Ferrers ideals, as well as their reduction numbers. These results can be viewed as extensions of the classical Dedekind-Mertens formula for the content of the product of two polynomials.

The critical ideals of a graph are the determinantal ideals of the generalized Laplacian matrix associated to a graph. In this article we provide a set of minimal forbidden graphs for the set of graphs with at most three trivial critical ideals. Then we use these forbidden graphs to characterize the graphs with at most three trivial critical ideals and clique number equal to 2 and 3.

The subgroup K=GL_p x GL_q of GL_{p+q} acts on the (complex) flag variety GL_{p+q}/B with finitely many orbits. We introduce a family of polynomials that specializes to representatives for cohomology classes of the orbit closures in the Borel model. We define and study K-orbit determinantal ideals to support the geometric naturality of these representatives. Using a modification of these ideals, we describe an analogy between two local singularity measures: the H-polynomials and the Kazhdan-Lusztig-Vogan polynomials.

The critical ideals of a graph are the determinantal ideals of the generalized Laplacian matrix associated to a graph. A basic property of the critical ideals of graphs asserts that the graphs with at most k trivial critical ideals, $Γ_{\leq k}$, are closed under induced subgraphs. In this article we find the set of minimal forbidden subgraphs for $Γ_{\leq 2}$, and we use this forbidden subgraphs to get a classification of the graphs in $Γ_{\leq 2}$. As a consequence we give a classification of the simple graphs whose critical group has two invariant factors equal to one. At the end of this article we give two infinite families of forbidden subgraphs.

We call an ideal in a polynomial ring robust if it can be minimally generated by a universal Gröbner basis. In this paper we show that robust toric ideals generated by quadrics are essentially determinantal. We then discuss two possible generalizations to higher degree, providing a tight classification for determinantal ideals, and a counterexample to a natural extension for Lawrence ideals. We close with a discussion of robustness of higher Betti numbers.

We introduce the concept of s-Hankel hypermatrix, which generalizes both Hankel matrices and generic hypermatrices. We study two determinantal ideals associated to an s-Hankel hypermatrix: the ideal I<s,t> generated by certain 2 x 2 slice minors, and the ideal \tilde{I}<s,t> generated by certain 2 x 2 generalized minors. We describe the structure of these two ideals, with particular attention to the primary decomposition of I<s,t>, and provide the explicit list of minimal primes for large values of s. Finally we give some geometrical interpretations and generalise a theorem of Watanabe.

Let V be a symplectic vector space of dimension 2n. Given a partition λwith at most n parts, there is an associated irreducible representation S_{[λ]}(V) of Sp(V). This representation admits a resolution by a natural complex L^λ, which we call the Littlewood complex, whose terms are restrictions of representations of GL(V). When λhas more than n parts, the representation S_{[λ]}(V) is not defined, but the Littlewood complex L^λstill makes sense. The purpose of this paper is to compute its homology. We find that either L^λis acyclic or that it has a unique non-zero homology group, which forms an irreducible representation of Sp(V). The non-zero homology group, if it exists, can be computed by a rule reminiscent of that occurring in the Borel-Weil-Bott theorem. This result can be interpreted as the computation of the "derived specialization" of irreducible representations of Sp(\infty), and as such categorifies earlier results of Koike-Terada on universal character rings. We prove analogous results for orthogonal and general linear groups. Along the way, we will see two topics from commutative algebra: the minimal free resolutions of determinantal ideals and Koszul homology.

We introduce some determinantal ideals of the generalized Laplacian matrix associated to a digraph G, that we call critical ideals of G. Critical ideals generalize the critical group and the characteristic polynomials of the adjacency and Laplacian matrices of a digraph. The main results of this article are the determination of some minimal generator sets and the reduced Grobner basis for the critical ideals of the complete graphs, the cycles and the paths. Also, we establish a bound between the number of trivial critical ideals and the stability and clique numbers of a graph.

In this paper, we use the tools of Gröbner bases and combinatorial secant varieties to study the determinantal ideals $I_t$ of the extended Hankel matrices. Denote by $c$-chain a sequence $a_1,\...,a_k$ with $a_i+c<a_{i+1}$ for all $i=1,\...,k-1$. Using the results of $c$-chain, we solve the membership problem for the symbolic powers $I_t^{(s)}$ and we compute the primary decomposition of the product $I_{t_1}\... I_{t_k}$ of the determinantal ideals. Passing through the initial ideals and algebras we prove that the product $I_{t_1}\... I_{t_k}$ has a linear resolution and the multi-homogeneous Rees algebra $\Rees(I_{t_1},\...,I_{t_k})$ is defined by a Gröbner basis of quadrics.
