Automorphism Groups of nilpotent Lie algebras associated to certain graphs
Published in Communications in Algebra https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00927872.2019.1640239 • View PublicationBIB
We consider a family of 2-step nilpotent Lie algebras associated to uniform complete graphs on odd number of vertices. We prove that the symmetry group of such a graph is the holomorph of the additive cyclic group $\Z_n$. Moreover, we prove that the (Lie) automorphism group of the corresponding nilpotent Lie algebra contains the dihedral group of order $2n$ as a subgroup.
Recent results on Choi's orthogonal Latin squares
Choi Seok-Jeong studied Latin squares at least 60 years earlier than Euler although this was less known. He introduced a pair of orthogonal Latin squares of order 9 in his book. Interestingly, his two orthogonal non-double-diagonal Latin squares produce a magic square of order 9, whose theoretical reason was not studied. There have been a few studies on Choi's Latin squares of order 9. The most recent one is Ko-Wei Lih's construction of Choi's Latin squares of order 9 based on the two $3 \times 3$ orthogonal Latin squares. In this paper, we give a new generalization of Choi's orthogonal Latin squares of order 9 to orthogonal Latin squares of size $n^2$ using the Kronecker product including Lih's construction. We find a geometric description of Choi's orthogonal Latin squares of order 9 using the dihedral group $D_8$. We also give a new way to construct magic squares from two orthogonal non-double-diagonal Latin squares, which explains why Choi's Latin squares produce a magic square of order 9.

Singular Graphs on which the Dihedral Group Acts Vertex Transitively
Let $Γ$ be a simple connect graph on a finite vertex set $V$ and let $A$ be its adjacency matrix. Then $Γ$ is said to be \textit{singular} if and only if $0$ is an eigenvalue of $A.$ The \textit{nullity (singularity)} of $Γ,$ denoted by ${\rm null}(Γ),$ is the \textit{algebraic multiplicity} of the eigenvalue $0$ in the spectrum of $Γ.$ The general problem of characterising singular graphs is easy to state but it seems too difficult in this time. In this work, we investigate this problem for finite graphs on which the dihedral group $D_n$ acts vertex transitively as group of automorphisms. We determine the nullity of such graphs. We show that Cayley graphs over dihedral groups $D_{p^s} $ is non-singular if $|H \cap C_{p^s}|\neq |H \cap C_{p^s}b|$ and $|H|<p$ where $p$ is a prime number and $s \in \mathbb{N}.$

Sarrus rules and dihedral groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is devoted to the analysis of a false generalization of the rule of Sarrus and its properties that can be derived with the help of dihedral groups. Further, we discuss a Sarrus-like scheme that could be helpful for students to memorize the calculation of a $4\times 4$ determinant.

A note on regular subgroups of the automorphism group of the linear Hadamard code
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the regular subgroups of the automorphism group of the linear Hadamard code. These subgroups correspond to the regular subgroups of $GA(r,2)$, w.t.r action on the vectors of $F_2^{r}$, where $n=2^r-1 $ is the length of the Hamadard code. We show that the dihedral group $D_{2^{r-1}}$ is a regular subgroup of $GA(r,2)$ only when $r=3$. Following the approach of \cite{M} we study the regular subgroups of the Hamming code obtained from the regular subgroups of the automorphism group of the Hadamard code of length 15.

Harborth Constants for Certain Classes of Metacyclic Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Harborth constant of a finite group $G$ is the smallest integer $k\geq \exp(G)$ such that any subset of $G$ of size $k$ contains $\exp(G)$ distinct elements whose product is $1$. Generalizing previous work on the Harborth constants of dihedral groups, we compute the Harborth constants for the metacyclic groups of the form $H_{n, m}=\langle x, y \mid x^n=1, y^2=x^m, yx=x^{-1}y \rangle$. We also solve the "inverse" problem of characterizing all smaller subsets that do not contain $\exp(H_{n,m})$ distinct elements whose product is $1$.

On Commuting Graphs of Generalized Dihedral Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a group $G$ and a subset $X$ of $G$, the commuting graph of $X$, denoted by $Γ(G,X)$ is the graph whose vertex set is $X$ and any two vertices $u$ and $v$ in $X$ are adjacent if and only if they commute in $G$. In this article, certain properties of the commuting graph of generalized dihedral groups have been studied.

The sieving phenomenon for finite groups
The cyclic sieving phenomenon is a well-studied occurrence in combinatorics appearing when a cyclic group acts on a finite set. In this paper, we demonstrate a natural extension of this theory to finite abelian groups. We also present a similar result for dihedral groups and suggest approaches for natural generalizations to nonabelian groups.

The Harborth Constant of Dihedral Groups
The Harborth constant of a finite group $G$, denoted $\gs(G)$, is the smallest integer $k$ such that the following holds: For $A\subseteq G$ with $|A|=k$, there exists $B\subseteq A$ with $|B|=\exp(G)$ such that the elements of $B$ can be rearranged into a sequence whose product equals $1_G$, the identity element of $G$. The Harborth constant is a well studied combinatorial invariant in the case of abelian groups. In this paper, we consider a generalization $\gs(G)$ of this combinatorial invariant for nonabelian groups and prove that if $G$ is a dihedral group of order $2n$ with $n\ge 3$, then $\gs(G) = n + 2$ if $n$ is even and $\gs(G) = 2n + 1$ otherwise.

Reconstruction of the Path Graph
Let $P$ be a set of $n \geq 5$ points in convex position in the plane. The path graph $G(P)$ of $P$ is an abstract graph whose vertices are non-crossing spanning paths of $P$, such that two paths are adjacent if one can be obtained from the other by deleting an edge and adding another edge. We prove that the automorphism group of $G(P)$ is isomorphic to $D_{n}$, the dihedral group of order $2n$. The heart of the proof is an algorithm that first identifies the vertices of $G(P)$ that correspond to boundary paths of $P$, where the identification is unique up to an automorphism of $K(P)$ as a geometric graph, and then identifies (uniquely) all edges of each path represented by a vertex of $G(P)$. The complexity of the algorithm is $O(N \log N)$ where $N$ is the number of vertices of $G(P)$.

Dihedral Sieving Phenomena
Published • View PublicationBIB
Cyclic sieving is a well-known phenomenon where certain interesting polynomials, especially $q$-analogues, have useful interpretations related to actions and representations of the cyclic group. We propose a definition of sieving for an arbitrary group $G$ and study it for the dihedral group $I_2(n)$ of order $2n$. This requires understanding the generators of the representation ring of the dihedral group. For $n$ odd, we exhibit several instances of dihedral sieving which involve the generalized Fibonomial coefficients, recently studied by Amdeberhan, Chen, Moll, and Sagan. We also exhibit an instance of dihedral sieving involving Garsia and Haiman's $(q,t)$-Catalan numbers.

A poset $Φ_n$ whose maximal chains are in bijection with the $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices
Published • View PublicationBIB
For an integer $n\geq 1$, we display a poset $Φ_n$ whose maximal chains are in bijection with the $n\times n$ alternating sign matrices. The Hasse diagram $\widehat Φ_n$ is obtained from the $n$-cube by adding some edges. We show that the dihedral group $D_{2n}$ acts on $\widehat Φ_n$ as a group of automorphisms.

Almost Difference Sets in Nonabelian Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give two new constructions of almost difference sets. The first is a generic construction of $(q^{2}(q+1),q(q^{2}-1),q(q^{2}-q-1),q^{2}-1)$ almost difference sets in certain groups of order $q^{2}(q+1)$ ($q$ is an odd prime power) having ($\mathbb{F}_{q},+)$ as a subgroup. The construction occurs in any group of order $p^{2}(p+1)$ ($p$ is an odd prime) having ($\mathbb{F}_{p^{2}},+)$ as an additive subgroup. This construction yields several infinite families of almost difference sets, many of which occur in nonabelian groups. The second construction yields $(4p,2p+1,p,p-1)$ almost difference sets in dihedral groups of order $4p$ where $p\equiv 3 \ ({\rm mod} \ 4)$ is a prime. Moreover, it turns out that some of the infinite families of almost difference sets obtained have Cayley graphs which are Ramanujan graphs. \keywords{Difference set \and Almost difference set \and Nonabelian group}

On dihedral flows in embedded graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $Γ$ be a multigraph with for each vertex a cyclic order of the edges incident with it. For $n \geq 3$, let $D_{2n}$ be the dihedral group of order $2n$. Define $\mathbb{D} := \{(\begin{smallmatrix} 1 & a \\ 0 & 1 \end{smallmatrix}) \mid a \in \mathbb{Z}\}$. In [5] it was asked whether $Γ$ admits a nowhere-identity $D_{2n}$-flow if and only if it admits a nowhere-identity $\mathbb{D}$-flow with $|a| < n$ (a `nowhere-identity $\mathbb{D}_n$-flow'). We give counterexamples to this statement and provide general obstructions. Furthermore, the complexity of the existence of nowhere-identity $\mathbb{D}_2$-flows is discussed. Lastly, graphs in which the equivalence of the existence of flows as above is true, are described. We focus particularly on cubic graphs.

Lambda number of the power graph of a finite group
Published • View PublicationBIB
The power graph $Γ_G$ of a finite group $G$ is the graph with the vertex set $G$, where two distinct elements are adjacent if one is a power of the other. An $L(2, 1)$-labeling of a graph $Γ$ is an assignment of labels from nonnegative integers to all vertices of $Γ$ such that vertices at distance two get different labels and adjacent vertices get labels that are at least $2$ apart. The lambda number of $Γ$, denoted by $λ(Γ)$, is the minimum span over all $L(2, 1)$-labelings of $Γ$. In this paper, we obtain bounds for $λ(Γ_G)$, and give necessary and sufficient conditions when the bounds are attained. As applications, we compute the exact value of $λ(Γ_G)$ if $G$ is a dihedral group, a generalized quaternion group, a $\mathcal{P}$-group or a cyclic group of order $pq^n$, where $p$ and $q$ are distinct primes and $n$ is a positive integer.

The application of representation theory in directed strongly regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The concept of directed strongly regular graphs (DSRG) was introduced by Duval in 1988 \cite{A}.In the present paper,we use representation theory of finite groups in order to investigate the directed strongly regular Cayley graphs. We first show that a Cayley graph $\mathcal{C}(G,S)$ is not a directed strongly regular graph if $S$ is a union of some conjugate classes of $G$.This generalizes an earlier result of Leif K.Jørgensen \cite{J1} on abelian groups.Secondly,by using induced representations,we have a look at the Cayley graph $\mathcal{C}(N\rtimes_θH, N_1\times H_1)$ with $N_1\subseteq N$ and $H_1\subseteq H$,determining its characteristic polynomial and its minimal polynomial.Based on this result,we generalize the semidirect product method of Art M. Duval and Dmitri Iourinski in \cite{D} and obtain a larger family of directed strongly regular graphs. Finally,we construct some directed strongly regular Cayley graphs on dihedral groups, which partially generalize the earlier results of Mikhail Klin,Akihiro Munemasa,Mikhail Muzychuk, and Paul Hermann Zieschang in \cite{K1}.By using character theory,we also give the characterization of directed strongly regular Cayley graphs $\mathcal{C}(D_n,X\cup Xa)$ with $X\cap X^{(-1)}=\emptyset$.
