A Spectral Approach to Consecutive Pattern-Avoiding Permutations

We consider the problem of enumerating permutations in the symmetric group on $n$ elements which avoid a given set of consecutive pattern $S$, and in particular computing asymptotics as $n$ tends to infinity. We develop a general method which solves this enumeration problem using the spectral theory of integral operators on $L^{2}([0,1]^{m})$, where the patterns in $S$ has length $m+1$. Kreĭn and Rutman's generalization of the Perron--Frobenius theory of non-negative matrices plays a central role. Our methods give detailed asymptotic expansions and allow for explicit computation of leading terms in many cases. As a corollary to our results, we settle a conjecture of Warlimont on asymptotics for the number of permutations avoiding a consecutive pattern.
Reduced decompositions and commutation classes
We study three aspects of commutation classes of reduced decompositions: the number of commutation classes, the structures of their corresponding graphs, and the enumeration of subnetworks, a concept recently introduced by Warrington [21]. Our bound for the number of commutation classes generalizes the works of Knuth[12], Green and Losonczy [7], and Tenner [19]. We analyze the structure of the graph G(w) using pattern avoidance, which provides an application of Tenner's characterization of vexillary permutations in [19]. We also discuss some connections between our work and recent developments in the strong Bruhat order and the higher Bruhat order.

We introduce the short toric polynomial associated to a graded Eulerian poset. This polynomial contains the same information as the two toric polynomials introduced by Stanley, but allows different algebraic manipulations. The intertwined recurrence defining Stanley's toric polynomials may be replaced by a single recurrence, in which the degree of the discarded terms is independent of the rank. A short toric variant of the formula by Bayer and Ehrenborg, expressing the toric $h$-vector in terms of the $cd$-index, may be stated in a rank-independent form, and it may be shown using weighted lattice path enumeration and the reflection principle. We use our techniques to derive a formula expressing the toric $h$-vector of a dual simplicial Eulerian poset in terms of its $f$-vector. This formula implies Gessel's formula for the toric $h$-vector of a cube, and may be used to prove that the nonnegativity of the toric $h$-vector of a simple polytope is a consequence of the Generalized Lower Bound Theorem holding for simplicial polytopes.
Enumeration of Restricted Partition Pairs and Permutation Pairs via 0-1 Tableaux
We use the 0-1 tableaux as a tool for enumerating permutations and partitions with restricted minima. The method used is extended for permutation pairs and partition pairs generated by a bipartite 0-1 tableaux.

Kasraoui, Stanton and Zeng, and Kim, Stanton and Zeng introduced certain $q$-analogues of Laguerre and Charlier polynomials. The moments of these orthogonal polynomials have combinatorial models in terms of crossings in permutations and set partitions. The aim of this article is to prove simple formulas for the moments of the $q$-Laguerre and the $q$-Charlier polynomials, in the style of the Touchard-Riordan formula (which gives the moments of some $q$-Hermite polynomials, and also the distribution of crossings in matchings). Our method mainly consists in the enumeration of weighted Motzkin paths, which are naturally associated with the moments. Some steps are bijective, in particular we describe a decomposition of paths which generalises a previous construction of Penaud for the case of the Touchard-Riordan formula. There are also some non-bijective steps using basic hypergeometric series, and continued fractions or, alternatively, functional equations.
A compositional shuffle conjecture specifying touch points of the Dyck path

We introduce a $q,t$-enumeration of Dyck paths which are forced to touch the main diagonal at specific points and forbidden to touch elsewhere and conjecture that it describes the action of the Macdonald theory $\nabla$ operator applied to a Hall-Littlewood polynomial. Our conjecture refines several earlier conjectures concerning the space of diagonal harmonics including the "shuffle conjecture" (Duke J. Math. $\mathbf {126}$ (2005), pp. 195-232) for $\nabla e_n[X]$. We bring to light that certain generalized Hall-Littlewood polynomials indexed by compositions are the building blocks for the algebraic combinatorial theory of $q,t$-Catalan sequences and we prove a number of identities involving these functions.
Linear relations of refined enumerations of alternating sign matrices

In recent papers we have studied refined enumerations of alternating sign matrices with respect to a fixed set of top and bottom rows. The present paper is a first step towards extending these considerations to alternating sign matrices where in addition a number of left and right columns are fixed. The main result is a simple linear relation between the number of $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices where the top row as well as the left and the right column is fixed and the number of $n \times n$ alternating sign matrices where the two top rows and the bottom row is fixed. This may be seen as a first indication for the fact that the refined enumerations of alternating sign matrices with respect to a fixed set of top and bottom rows as well as left and right columns can possibly be reduced to the refined enumerations where only a number of top and bottom rows are fixed. For the latter numbers we provide a system of linear equations that conjecturally determines them uniquely.

We explain how the moments of the (weight function of the) Askey Wilson polynomials are related to the enumeration of the staircase tableaux introduced by the first and fourth authors. This gives us a direct combinatorial formula for these moments. Then we use techniques developed by Ismail and the third author to give explicit formulae for these moments and for the enumeration of staircase tableaux. Finally we study the enumeration of staircase tableaux at various specializations of the parameterizations; for example, we obtain the Catalan numbers, Fibonacci numbers, Eulerian numbers, the number of permutations, and the number of matchings.
({2,3}, 6)-spheres and their generalizations
We consider here 6-regular plane graphs whose faces have size 1, 2 or 3. In Section 2 a practical enumeration method is given that allowed us to enumerate them up to 53 vertices. Subsequently, in Section 3 we enumerate all possible symmetry groups of the spheres that showed up. In Section 4 we introduce a new Goldberg-Coxeter construction that takes a 6-regular plane graph G0, two integers k and l and returns two 6-regular plane graphs.
Then in the final section, we consider the notions of zigzags and central circuits for the considered graphs. We introduced the notions of tightness and weak tightness for them and we prove an upper bound on the number of zigzags and central circuits of such tight graphs. We also classify the tight and weakly tight graphs with simple zigzags or central circuits.
Sampling independent sets in the discrete torus

The even discrete torus is the graph T_{L,d} on vertex set {0,...,L-1}^d (L even) with two vertices adjacent if they differ by 1 (mod L) on one coordinate. The hard-core measure with activity x on T_{L,d} is the distribution pi_x on the independent sets (sets of vertices spanning no edges) of T_{L,d} in which a set I is chosen with probability proportional to x^|I|. This distribution occurs in problems from statistical physics and communication networks.
We study Glauber dynamics, a single-site update Markov chain on the set of independent sets of T_{L,d} whose stationary distribution is pi_x. We show that for x > cd^{-1/4}log^{3/4}d (and d large) the convergence to stationarity is exponentially slow in L^{d-1}. This improves a result of Borgs et al., who had shown slow mixing for x > c^d.
Our proof, which extends to r-local chains (chains which alter the state of at most a proportion r of the vertices in each step) for suitable r, follows the conductance argument of Borgs et al., adding to it some combinatorial enumeration methods that are modifications of those used by Galvin and Kahn to show that the hard-core model with parameter x on the integer lattice Z^d exhibits phase coexistence for x > cd^{-1/4}log^{3/4}d.
The graph T_{L,d} is bipartite, with partition classes E (the vertices the sum of whose coordinates is even) and O. Our result can be expressed combinatorially as the statement that for each sufficiently large x, there is an r(x)>0 such that if I is an independent set chosen according to pi_x, then the probability that ||I \cap E|-|I \cap O|| is at most r(x)L^d is exponentially small in L^{d-1}. In particular, for all eps>0 the probability that a uniformly chosen independent set from T_{L,d} satisfies ||I \cap E|-|I \cap O|| \leq (.25 - eps)L^d is exponentially small in L^{d-1}.

All generalized Hadamard matrices of order 18 over a group of order 3, H(6,3), are enumerated in two different ways: once, as class regular symmetric (6,3)-nets, or symmetric transversal designs on 54 points and 54 blocks with a group of order 3 acting semi-regularly on points and blocks, and secondly, as collections of full weight vectors in quaternary Hermitian self-dual codes of length 18. The second enumeration is based on the classification of Hermitian self-dual [18,9] codes over GF(4), completed in this paper. It is shown that up to monomial equivalence, there are 85 generalized Hadamard matrices H(6,3), and 245 inequivalent Hermitian self-dual codes of length 18 over GF(4).

Recently, Deutsch and Elizalde studied the largest and the smallest fixed points of permutations. Motivated by their work, we consider the analogous problems in weighted set partitions. Let $A_{n,k}(\mathbf{t})$ denote the total weight of partitions on $[n+1]$ with the largest singleton $\{k+1\}$. In this paper, explicit formulas for $A_{n,k}(\mathbf{t})$ and many combinatorial identities involving $A_{n,k}(\mathbf{t})$ are obtained by umbral operators and combinatorial methods. As applications, we investigate three special cases such as permutations, involutions and labeled forests. Particularly in the permutation case, we derive a surprising identity analogous to the Riordan identity related to tree enumerations, namely, \begin{eqnarray*} \sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{n}{k}D_{k+1}(n+1)^{n-k} &=& n^{n+1}, \end{eqnarray*} where $D_{k}$ is the $k$-th derangement number or the number of permutations of $\{1,2,\dots, k\}$ with no fixed points.

Recently, by the Riordan's identity related to tree enumerations, \begin{eqnarray*} \sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{n}{k}(k+1)!(n+1)^{n-k} &=& (n+1)^{n+1}, \end{eqnarray*} Sun and Xu derived another analogous one, \begin{eqnarray*} \sum_{k=0}^{n}\binom{n}{k}D_{k+1}(n+1)^{n-k} &=& n^{n+1}, \end{eqnarray*} where $D_{k}$ is the number of permutations with no fixed points on $\{1,2,\dots, k\}$. In the paper, we utilize the $λ$-factorials of $n$, defined by Eriksen, Freij and W$\ddot{a}$stlund, to give a unified generalization of these two identities. We provide for it a combinatorial proof by the functional digraph theory and another two algebraic proofs. Using the umbral representation of our generalized identity and the Abel's binomial formula, we deduce several properties for $λ$-factorials of $n$ and establish the curious relations between the generating functions of general and exponential types for any sequence of numbers or polynomials.
Planar maps and continued fractions

We present an unexpected connection between two map enumeration problems. The first one consists in counting planar maps with a boundary of prescribed length. The second one consists in counting planar maps with two points at a prescribed distance. We show that, in the general class of maps with controlled face degrees, the solution for both problems is actually encoded into the same quantity, respectively via its power series expansion and its continued fraction expansion. We then use known techniques for tackling the first problem in order to solve the second. This novel viewpoint provides a constructive approach for computing the so-called distance-dependent two-point function of general planar maps. We prove and extend some previously predicted exact formulas, which we identify in terms of particular Schur functions.
Combinatorial analysis of interacting RNA molecules

Recently several minimum free energy (MFE) folding algorithms for predicting the joint structure of two interacting RNA molecules have been proposed. Their folding targets are interaction structures, that can be represented as diagrams with two backbones drawn horizontally on top of each other such that (1) intramolecular and intermolecular bonds are noncrossing and (2) there is no "zig-zag" configuration. This paper studies joint structures with arc-length at least four in which both, interior and exterior stack-lengths are at least two (no isolated arcs). The key idea in this paper is to consider a new type of shape, based on which joint structures can be derived via symbolic enumeration. Our results imply simple asymptotic formulas for the number of joint structures with surprisingly small exponential growth rates. They are of interest in the context of designing prediction algorithms for RNA-RNA interactions.
Bijective enumeration of some colored permutations given by the product of two long cycles

Let $γ_n$ be the permutation on $n$ symbols defined by $γ_n = (1\ 2\...\ n)$. We are interested in an enumerative problem on colored permutations, that is permutations $β$ of $n$ in which the numbers from 1 to $n$ are colored with $p$ colors such that two elements in a same cycle have the same color. We show that the proportion of colored permutations such that $γ_n β^{-1}$ is a long cycle is given by the very simple ratio $\frac{1}{n- p+1}$. Our proof is bijective and uses combinatorial objects such as partitioned hypermaps and thorn trees. This formula is actually equivalent to the proportionality of the number of long cycles $α$ such that $γ_nα$ has $m$ cycles and Stirling numbers of size $n+1$, an unexpected connection previously found by several authors by means of algebraic methods. Moreover, our bijection allows us to refine the latter result with the cycle type of the permutations.
Counting permutations with no long monotone subsequence via generating trees and the kernel method

We recover Gessel's determinantal formula for the generating function of permutations with no ascending subsequence of length m+1. The starting point of our proof is the recursive construction of these permutations by insertion of the largest entry. This construction is of course extremely simple. The cost of this simplicity is that we need to take into account in the enumeration m-1 additional parameters --- namely, the positions of the leftmost increasing subsequences of length i, for i=2,...,m. This yields for the generating function a functional equation with m-1 "catalytic" variables, and the heart of the paper is the solution of this equation. We perform a similar task for involutions with no descending subsequence of length m+1, constructed recursively by adding a cycle containing the largest entry. We refine this result by keeping track of the number of fixed points. In passing, we prove that the ordinary generating functions of these families of permutations can be expressed as constant terms of rational series.
Degenerations and orbits in finite abelian groups

A notion of degeneration of elements in groups is introduced. It is used to parametrize the orbits in a finite abelian group under its full automorphism group by a finite distributive lattice. A pictorial description of this lattice leads to an intuitive self-contained exposition of some of the basic facts concerning these orbits, including their enumeration. Given a partition $λ$, the lattice parametrizing orbits in a finite abelian p-group of type $λ$ is found to be independent of p. The order of the orbit corresponding to each parameter, which turns out to be a polynomial in p, is calculated. The description of orbits is extended to subquotients by certain characteristic subgroups. Each such characteristic subquotient is shown to have a unique maximal orbit.

In theory of Coxeter groups, bigrassmannian elements are well known as elements which have precisely one left descent and precisely one right descent. In this article, we prove formulas on enumeration of bigrassmannian permutations weakly below a permutation in Bruhat order in the symmetric groups. For the proof, we use equivalent characterizations of bigrassmannian permutations by Lascoux-Schutzenberger and Reading.

In this paper we outline a Matrix Ansatz approach to some problems of combinatorial enumeration. The idea is that many interesting quantities can be expressed in terms of products of matrices, where the matrices obey certain relations. We illustrate this approach with applications to moments of orthogonal polynomials, permutations, signed permutations, and tableaux.
