We consider point sets in the $m$-dimensional affine space $\mathbb{F}_q^m$ where each squared Euclidean distance of two points is a square in $\mathbb{F}_q$. It turns out that the situation in $\mathbb{F}_q^m$ is rather similar to the one of integral distances in Euclidean spaces. Therefore we expect the results over finite fields to be useful for the Euclidean case.
We completely determine the automorphism group of these spaces which preserves integral distances. For some small parameters $m$ and $q$ we determine the maximum cardinality $\mathcal{I}(m,q)$ of integral point sets in $\mathbb{F}_q^m$. We provide upper bounds and lower bounds on $\mathcal{I}(m,q)$. If we map integral distances to edges in a graph, we can define a graph $\mathfrak{G}_{m,q}$ with vertex set $\mathbb{F}_q^m$. It turns out that $\mathfrak{G}_{m,q}$ is strongly regular for some cases.

Motivated by integral point sets in the Euclidean plane, we consider integral point sets in affine planes over finite fields. An integral point set is a set of points in the affine plane $\mathbb{F}_q^2$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, where the formally defined squared Euclidean distance of every pair of points is a square in $\mathbb{F}_q$. It turns out that integral point sets over $\mathbb{F}_q$ can also be characterized as affine point sets determining certain prescribed directions, which gives a relation to the work of Blokhuis. Furthermore, in one important sub-case integral point sets can be restated as cliques in Paley graphs of square order.
In this article we give new results on the automorphisms of integral point sets and classify maximal integral point sets over $\mathbb{F}_q$ for $q\leq 47$. Furthermore, we give two series of maximal integral point sets and prove their maximality.

Kinser developed a hierarchy of inequalities dealing with the dimensions of certain spaces constructed from a given quantity of subspaces. These inequalities can be applied to the rank function of a matroid, a geometric object concerned with dependencies of subsets of a ground set. A matroid which is representable by a matrix with entries from some finite field must satisfy each of the Kinser inequalities. We provide results on the matroids which satisfy each inequality and the structure of the hierarchy of such matroids.

Divisibility of trinomials by given polynomials over finite fields has been studied and used to construct orthogonal arrays in recent literature. Dewar et al.\ (Des.\ Codes Cryptogr.\ 45:1-17, 2007) studied the division of trinomials by a given pentanomial over $\F_2$ to obtain the orthogonal arrays of strength at least 3, and finalized their paper with some open questions. One of these questions is concerned with generalizations to the polynomials with more than five terms. In this paper, we consider the divisibility of trinomials by a given maximum weight polynomial over $\F_2$ and apply the result to the construction of the orthogonal arrays of strength at least 3.

Let $G$ be a permutation group acting on a finite set $Ω$ of cardinality $n$. The number of orbits of the induced action of $G$ on the set $Ω_m$ of all size $m$ subsets of $Ω$ satisfies the trivial inequalities $|Ω_m|/|G|\leq |Ω_m/G|\leq |Ω_m|$. The paper offers improvements of the upper bound in terms of the minimal degree of $G$ or the minimal degree of some its subset with a small complement. Applications include asymptotic enumeration of point configurations in an affine space over a finite field, unlabeled graphs and hypergraphs. Finally, with references to known results of permutation groups theory it is shown that if $G$ is an arbitrary 2-transitive group except for $S_n$ and $A_n$, then $|Ω_m/G|\approx |Ω_m|/|G|$ for $m$ and $n$ large provided the ratio $m/n$ is bounded away from 0 and 1.
Similar results hold for the induced action of $G$ on the set $Ω_{(m)}$ of all weight $m$ multisets on $Ω$ provided the ratio $m/n$ is not too small.

For any minor-closed class of matroids over a fixed finite field, we state an exact structural characterization for the sufficiently connected matroids in the class. We also state a number of conjectures that might be approachable using the structural characterization.

We introduce the Möbius polynomial $ M_n(x) = \sum_{d|n} μ\left( \frac nd \right) x^d $, which gives the number of aperiodic bracelets of length $n$ with $x$ possible types of gems, and therefore satisfies $M_n(x) \equiv 0$ (mod $n$) for all $x \in \mathbb Z$. We derive some key properties, analyze graphs in the complex plane, and then apply Möbius polynomials combinatorially to juggling patterns, irreducible polynomials over finite fields, and Euler's totient theorem.

The Weil sum $W_{K,d}(a)=\sum_{x \in K} ψ(x^d + a x)$ where $K$ is a finite field, $ψ$ is an additive character of $K$, $d$ is coprime to $|K^\times|$, and $a \in K^\times$ arises often in number-theoretic calculations, and in applications to finite geometry, cryptography, digital sequence design, and coding theory. Researchers are especially interested in the case where $W_{K,d}(a)$ assumes three distinct values as $a$ runs through $K^\times$. A Galois-theoretic approach, combined with $p$-divisibility results on Gauss sums, is used here to prove a variety of new results that constrain which fields $K$ and exponents $d$ support three-valued Weil sums, and restrict the values that such Weil sums may assume.

Let $p$ be an odd prime and $\F_q$ be the finite field with $q=p^n$ elements. A planar function $f:\F_q\rightarrow\F_q$ is called homogenous if $f(λx)=λ^df(x)$ for all $λ\in\F_p$ and $x\in\F_q$, where $d$ is some fixed positive integer. We characterize $x^2$ as the unique homogenous planar function over $\F_{p^2}$ up to equivalence.

We determine the critical groups of the generalized de Bruijn graphs DB$(n,d)$ and generalized Kautz graphs Kautz$(n,d)$, thus extending and completing earlier results for the classical de Bruijn and Kautz graphs. Moreover, for a prime $p$ the critical groups of DB$(n,p)$ are shown to be in close correspondence with groups of $n\times n$ circulant matrices over $\mathbb{F}_p$, which explains numerical data in [OEIS:A027362], and suggests the possibility to construct normal bases in $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ from spanning trees in DB$(n,p)$.

We give a vanishing theorem for the monodromy eigenspaces of the Milnor fibers of complex line arrangements. By applying the modular bound of the local system cohomology groups given by Papadima-Suciu, the result is deduced from the vanishing of the cohomology of certain Aomoto complex over finite fields. In order to prove this, we introduce degeneration homomorphisms of Orlik-Solomon algebras.
Permutation polynomials induced from permutations of subfields, and some complete sets of mutually orthogonal latin squares
We present a general technique for obtaining permutation polynomials over a finite field from permutations of a subfield. By applying this technique to the simplest classes of permutation polynomials on the subfield, we obtain several new families of permutation polynomials. Some of these have the additional property that both f(x) and f(x)+x induce permutations of the field, which has combinatorial consequences. We use some of our permutation polynomials to exhibit complete sets of mutually orthogonal latin squares. In addition, we solve the open problem from a recent paper by Wu and Lin, and we give simpler proofs of much more general versions of the results in two other recent papers.

Tactical decompositions of designs over finite fields
An automorphism group of an incidence structure I induces a tactical decomposition on I. It is well known that tactical decompositions of t-designs satisfy certain necessary conditions which can be expressed as equations in terms of the coefficients of tactical decomposition matrices. In this article we present results obtained for tactical decompositions of q-analogs of t-designs, more precisely, of 2-(v,k,lambda_2;q) designs. We show that coefficients of tactical decomposition matrices of a design over finite field satisfy an equation system analog to the one known for block designs. Furthermore, taking into consideration specific properties of designs over the binary field, we obtain an additional system of inequations for these coefficients in that case.

In this paper we apply a group action approach to the study of Erd\H os-Falconer type problems in vector spaces over finite fields and use it to obtain non-trivial exponents for the distribution of simplices. We prove that there exists $s_0(d)<d$ such that if $E \subset {\mathbb F}_q^d$, $d \ge 2$, with $|E| \ge Cq^{s_0}$, then $|T^d_d(E)| \ge C'q^{d+1 \choose 2}$, where $T^d_k(E)$ denotes the set of congruence classes of $k$-dimensional simplices determined by $k+1$-tuples of points from $E$. Non-trivial exponents were previously obtained by Chapman, Erdogan, Hart, Iosevich and Koh (\cite{CEHIK12}) for $T^d_k(E)$ with $2 \leq k \leq d-1$. A non-trivial result for $T^2_2(E)$ in the plane was obtained by Bennett, Iosevich and Pakianathan (\cite{BIP12}). These results are significantly generalized and improved in this paper. In particular, we establish the Wolff exponent $\frac{4}{3}$, previously established in \cite{CEHIK12} for the $q\equiv3\mbox{ mod }4$ case to the case $q\equiv1\mbox{ mod }4$, and this results in a new sum-product type inequality. We also obtain non-trivial results for subsets of the sphere in ${\mathbb F}_q^d$, where previous methods have yielded nothing. The key to our approach is a group action perspective which quickly leads to natural and effective formulae in the style of the classical Mattila integral from geometric measure theory.

Let $L=\mathbb F_{q^n}$ be a finite field and let $F=\mathbb F_q$ be a subfield of $L$.
Consider $L$ as a vector space over $F$ and the associated projective space that is isomorphic to ${\mathrm{PG}}(n-1,q)$.
The properties of the projective mapping induced by $x\mapsto x^{-1}$ have been studied in \cite{Cs13,Fa02,Ha83,He85,Bu95}, where it is proved that the image of any line is a normal rational curve in some subspace.
In this note a more detailed geometric description is achieved.
Consequences are found related to mixed partitions of the projective spaces; in particular, it is proved that for any positive integer $k$, if $q\ge2^k-1$, then there are partitions of ${\mathrm{PG}}(2^k-1,q)$ in normal rational curves of degree $2^k-1$.
For smaller $q$ the same construction gives partitions in $(q+1)$-tuples of independent points.
Another Proof of Segre's Theorem about Ovals
In 1955 B. Segre showed that any oval in a projective plane over a finite field of odd order is a conic. His proof constructs a conic which matches the oval in some points and tangents, and then shows that it actually coincides with the oval. The different proof given here parametrizes an affine piece of the oval and shows directly that the parametrization is given by a polynomial of degree $2$.
A note on some special exponential sums
In this note, we presented a new decomposition of elements of finite fields of even order and illustrated that it is an effective tool in evaluation of some specific exponential sums over finite fields, the explicit value of some exponential sums were obtained.

It is shown that the maximum size of a binary subspace code of packet length $v=6$, minimum subspace distance $d=4$, and constant dimension $k=3$ is $M=77$; in Finite Geometry terms, the maximum number of planes in $\operatorname{PG}(5,2)$ mutually intersecting in at most a point is $77$. Optimal binary $(v,M,d;k)=(6,77,4;3)$ subspace codes are classified into $5$ isomorphism types, and a computer-free construction of one isomorphism type is provided. The construction uses both geometry and finite fields theory and generalizes to any $q$, yielding a new family of $q$-ary $(6,q^6+2q^2+2q+1,4;3)$ subspace codes.

Based on the simple and well understood concept of subfields in a finite field, the technique called `field reduction' has proved to be a very useful and powerful tool in finite geometry. In this paper we elaborate on this technique. Field reduction for projective and polar spaces is formalized and the links with Desarguesian spreads and linear sets are explained in detail. Recent results and some fundamental ques- tions about linear sets and scattered spaces are studied. The relevance of field reduction is illustrated by discussing applications to blocking sets and semifields.
