Zeta Functions and the Log-behavior of Combinatorial Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we use the Riemann zeta function $ζ(x)$ and the Bessel zeta function $ζ_μ(x)$ to study the log-behavior of combinatorial sequences. We prove that $ζ(x)$ is log-convex for $x>1$. As a consequence, we deduce that the sequence $\{|B_{2n}|/(2n)!\}_{n\geq 1}$ is log-convex, where $B_n$ is the $n$-th Bernoulli number. We introduce the function $θ(x)=(2ζ(x)Γ(x+1))^{\frac{1}{x}}$, where $Γ(x)$ is the gamma function, and we show that $\log θ(x)$ is strictly increasing for $x\geq 6$. This confirms a conjecture of Sun stating that the sequence $\{\sqrt[n] {|B_{2n}}|\}_{n\geq 1}$ is strictly increasing. Amdeberhan, Moll and Vignat defined the numbers $a_n(μ)=2^{2n+1}(n+1)!(μ+1)_nζ_μ(2n)$ and conjectured that the sequence $\{a_n(μ)\}_{n\geq 1}$ is log-convex for $μ=0$ and $μ=1$. By proving that $ζ_μ(x)$ is log-convex for $x>1$ and $μ>-1$, we show that the sequence $\{a_n(μ)\}_{n\geq 1}$ is log-convex for any $μ>-1$. We introduce another function $θ_μ(x)$ involving $ζ_μ(x)$ and the gamma function $Γ(x)$ and we show that $\log θ_μ(x)$ is strictly increasing for $x>8e(μ+2)^2$. This implies that $\sqrt[n]{a_n(μ)}<\sqrt[n+1]{a_{n+1}(μ)}$ for $n> 4e(μ+2)^2$. Based on Dobinski's formula, we prove that $\sqrt[n]{B_n}<\sqrt[n+1]{B_{n+1}}$ for $n\geq 1$, where $B_n$ is the $n$-th Bell number. This confirms another conjecture of Sun. We also establish a connection between the increasing property of $\{\sqrt[n]{B_n}\}_{n\geq 1}$ and Hölder's inequality in probability theory.

On the $q$-Genocchi numbers and polynomials with weight zero and their applications
Published in Nonlinear Functional Analysis and Applications 18 (2013) 193-203 • Search Publication
In this paper, the authors deal with the $q$-Genocchi numbers and polynomials with weight zero. They discover some interesting relations via the $p$-adic $q$-integral on $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ and familiar basis Bernstein polynomials. Finally, the authors show that the $p$-adic $\log$ gamma functions are associated with the $q$-Genocchi numbers and polynomials with weight zero.

Generalized Stirling Numbers and Generalized Stirling Functions
Here presented is a unified approach to Stirling numbers and their generalizations as well as generalized Stirling functions by using generalized factorial functions, $k$-Gamma functions, and generalized divided difference. Previous well-known extensions of Stirling numbers due to Riordan, Carlitz, Howard, Charalambides-Koutras, Gould-Hopper, Hsu-Shiue, Tsylova Todorov, Ahuja-Enneking, and Stirling functions introduced by Butzer and Hauss, Butzer, Kilbas, and Trujilloet and others are included as particular cases of our generalization. Some basic properties related to our general pattern such as their recursive relations and generating functions are discussed. Three algorithms for calculating the Stirling numbers based on our generalization are also given, which include a comprehensive algorithm using the characterization of Riordan arrays.

The Binomial Coefficient for Negative Arguments
The definition of the binomial coefficient in terms of gamma functions also allows non-integer arguments. For nonnegative integer arguments the gamma functions reduce to factorials, leading to the well-known Pascal triangle. Using a symmetry formula for the gamma function, this definition is extended to negative integer arguments, making the symmetry identity for binomial coefficients valid for all integer arguments. The agreement of this definition with some other identities and with the binomial theorem is investigated.

Some Combinatorial Identities some of which involving Harmonic Numbers
A product difference equation is proved and used for derivation by elementary methods of four combinatorial identities, eight combinatorial identities involving generalized harmonic numbers and eight combinatorial identities involving classical harmonic numbers. For the binomial coefficients the definition with gamma functions is used, thus also allowing non-integer arguments in the identities. The generalized harmonic numbers in this case are harmonic numbers with a complex offset, where the classical harmonic numbers are a special case with offset zero.

On some expansions for the Euler Gamma function and the Riemann Zeta function
Published in Grzegorz Rzadkowski, On some expansions for the Euler Gamma function and the Riemann Zeta function, J. Comp. Appl. Math. 236 (2012) pp. 3710-3719 • View PublicationBIB
In the present paper we introduce some expansions, based on the falling factorials, for the Euler Gamma function and the Riemann Zeta function. In the proofs we use the Faá di Bruno formula, Bell polynomials, potential polynomials, Mittag-Leffler polynomials, derivative polynomials and special numbers (Eulerian numbers and Stirling numbers of both kinds). We investigate the rate of convergence of the series and give some numerical examples.

A p-adic analogue of a formula of Ramanujan
Published in Archiv der Mathematik 91 (2008), 492-504 • View PublicationBIB
During his lifetime, Ramanujan provided many formulae relating binomial sums to special values of the Gamma function. Based on numerical computations, Van Hamme recently conjectured $p$-adic analogues to such formulae. Using a combination of ordinary and Gaussian hypergeometric series, we prove one of these conjectures.

On asymptotics, Stirling numbers, Gamma function and polylogs
We apply the Euler--Maclaurin formula to find the asymptotic expansion of the sums $\sum_{k=1}^n (\log k)^p / k^q$, ~$\sum k^q (\log k)^p$, ~$\sum (\log k)^p /(n-k)^q$, ~$\sum 1/k^q (\log k)^p $ in closed form to arbitrary order ($p,q \in\N$). The expressions often simplify considerably and the coefficients are recognizable constants. The constant terms of the asymptotics are either $ζ^{(p)}(\pm q)$ (first two sums), 0 (third sum) or yield novel mathematical constants (fourth sum). This allows numerical computation of $ζ^{(p)}(\pm q)$ faster than any current software. One of the constants also appears in the expansion of the function $\sum_{n\geq 2} (n\log n)^{-s}$ around the singularity at $s=1$; this requires the asymptotics of the incomplete gamma function. The manipulations involve polylogs for which we find a representation in terms of Nielsen integrals, as well as mysterious conjectures for Bernoulli numbers. Applications include the determination of the asymptotic growth of the Taylor coefficients of $(-z/\log(1-z))^k$. We also give the asymptotics of Stirling numbers of first kind and their formula in terms of harmonic numbers.

Counting and Computing by $e$
Published in M. Hassani, Derangements and Applications, Journal of Integer Sequences (JIS), Volume 6, Issue 1, Article 03.1.2, 2003. M. Hassani, Cycles in graphs and derangements, Math. Gaz. 88 (March 2004) pp. 123-126 • Search Publication
In this paper we count the number of paths and cycles in complete graphs by using the number $e$. Also, we compute the number of derangements in same way. Connection by $e$ yields some nice formulas for the number of derangements, such as $D_n=\lfloor\frac{n!+1}{e}\rfloor$ and $D_n=\lfloor(e+e^{-1})n!\rfloor-\lfloor en!\rfloor$, and using these relations allow us to compute some incomplete gamma functions and hypergeometric summations; these connections are hidden in the heart of a nice polynomial that we call it derangement function and a simple ordinary differential equation concerning it.

Gamma function, Beta function and combinatorial identities
In this note we present a method for obtaining a wide class of combinatorial identities. We give several examples, in particular, based on the Gamma and Beta functions. Some of them have already been considered by previously, and other are new.
