Published in Rev. R. Acad. Cienc. Exactas Fis. Nat. Ser. A Math. RACSAM. Vol. 115 (2021), Paper No. 39, 14 pages • View PublicationBIB
In the paper, the authors establish an inequality involving exponential functions and sums, introduce a ratio of many gamma functions, discuss properties, including monotonicity, logarithmic convexity, (logarithmically) complete monotonicity, and the Bernstein function property, of the newly introduced ratio, and construct two inequalities of multinomial coefficients and multivariate beta functions.

On a series for the upper incomplete Gamma function
We define an absolutely convergent series for the upper incomplete Gamma function $Γ(s,z)$ for $z\geq 1$ and $s\in \mathbb{C}$. We express this series using certain polynomials which we define using the Stirling numbers of the first kind. We prove that these polynomials have positive coefficients by defining a three-parameter family of integers and certain linear operators on vector spaces of polynomials. We then apply this series to obtain a formula for the Riemann xi function valid at any $s \in \mathbb{C}$.

The Newton integral and the Stirling formula
We present details of logically simplest integral sufficient for deducing the Stirling asymptotic formula for n!. It is the Newton integral, defined as the difference of values of any primitive at the endpoints of the integration interval. We review in its framework in detail two derivations of the Stirling formula. The first approximates log(1)+log(2)+...+log(n) with an integral and the second uses the classical gamma function and a Fubini-type result. We mention two more integral representations of n!.

A hierarchy of Palm measures for determinantal point processes with gamma kernels
Published in Studia Mathematica 267 (2022), no. 2, 121-160 • Search Publication
The gamma kernels are a family of projection kernels $K^{(z,z')}=K^{(z,z')}(x,y)$ on a doubly infinite $1$-dimensional lattice. They are expressed through Euler's gamma function and depend on two continuous parameters $z,z'$. The gamma kernels initially arose from a model of random partitions via a limit transition. On the other hand, these kernels are closely related to unitarizable representations of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$. Every gamma kernel $K^{(z,z')}$ serves as a correlation kernel for a determinantal measure $M^{(z,z')}$, which lives on the space of infinite point configurations on the lattice. We examine chains of kernels of the form $$ \ldots, K^{(z-1,z'-1)}, \; K^{(z,z')},\; K^{(z+1,z'+1)}, \ldots, $$ and establish the following hierarchical relations inside any such chain: Given $(z,z')$, the kernel $K^{(z,z')}$ is a one-dimensional perturbation of (a twisting of) the kernel $K^{(z+1,z'+1)}$, and the one-point Palm distributions for the measure $M^{(z,z')}$ are absolutely continuous with respect to $M^{(z+1,z'+1)}$. We also explicitly compute the corresponding Radon-Nikodým derivatives and show that they are given by certain normalized multiplicative functionals.

Self-avoiding walk on the complete graph
There is an extensive literature concerning self-avoiding walk on infinite graphs, but the subject is relatively undeveloped on finite graphs. The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the phase transition for self-avoiding walk on the simplest finite graph: the complete graph. We make the elementary observation that the susceptibility of the self-avoiding walk on the complete graph is given exactly in terms of the incomplete gamma function. The known asymptotic behaviour of the incomplete gamma function then yields a complete description of the finite-size scaling of the self-avoiding walk on the complete graph. As a basic example, we compute the limiting distribution of the length of a self-avoiding walk on the complete graph, in subcritical, critical, and supercritical regimes. This provides a prototype for more complex unsolved problems such as the self-avoiding walk on the hypercube or on a high-dimensional torus.
Operational Methods in the Study of Sobolev-Jacobi Polynomials

Inspired by ideas from umbral calculus and based on the two types of integrals occurring in the defining equations for the gamma and the reciprocal gamma functions, respectively, we develop a multi-variate version of umbral calculus and of the so-called umbral image technique. Besides providing a class of new formulae for generalized hypergeometric functions and an implementation of series manipulations for computing lacunary generating functions, our main application of these techniques is the study of Sobolev-Jacobi polynomials. Motivated by applications to theoretical chemistry, we moreover present a deep link between generalized normal-ordering techniques introduced by Gurappa and Panigrahi, two-variable Hermite polynomials and our integral-based series transforms. Notably, we thus calculate all K-tuple L-shifted lacunary exponential generating functions for a certain family of SJ polynomials explicitly.

A Short Note on Integral Transformations and Conversion Formulas for Sequence Generating Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this note is to provide an expository introduction to some more curious integral formulas and transformations involving generating functions. We seek to generalize these results and integral representations which effectively provide a mechanism for converting between a sequence's ordinary and exponential generating function (OGF and EGF, respectively) and vice versa. The Laplace transform provides an integral formula for the EGF-to-OGF transformation, where the reverse OGF-to-EGF operation requires more careful integration techniques. We prove two variants of the OGF-to-EGF transformation integrals from the Hankel loop contour for the reciprocal gamma function and from Fourier series expansions of integral representations for the Hadamard product of two generating functions, respectively. We also suggest several generalizations of these integral formulas and provide new examples along the way.

Supercongruences concerning truncated hypergeometric series

Let $n\geq 3$ be an integer and $p$ be a prime with $p\equiv 1\pmod{n}$. In this paper, we show that $${}_nF_{n-1}\bigg[\begin{matrix} \frac{n-1}{n}&\frac{n-1}{n}&\ldots&\frac{n-1}{n}\\ &1&\ldots&1\end{matrix}\bigg | \, 1\bigg]_{p-1}\equiv -Γ_p\bigg(\frac{1}{n}\bigg)^n\pmod{p^3}, $$ where the truncated hypergeometric series $$_nF_{n-1} \bigg[\begin{matrix} x_1&x_2&\ldots&x_n\\ &y_1&\cdots&y_{n-1}\end{matrix}\bigg | \, z\bigg]_m=\sum_{k=0}^{m}\frac{z^k}{k!}\prod_{j=0}^{k-1}\frac{(x_1+j)\cdots(x_{n}+j)}{(y_1+j)\cdots(y_{n-1}+j)} $$ and $Γ_p$ denotes the $p$-adic gamma function. This confirms a conjecture of Deines, Fuselier, Long, Swisher and Tu. Furthermore, under the same assumptions, we also prove that $$p^n\cdot {}_{n+1} F_n \bigg[ \begin{matrix} 1 &1 &\ldots &1\\ &\frac{n+1}{n} &\ldots &\frac{n+1}{n} \end{matrix}\bigg | \, 1\bigg]_{p-1} \equiv -Γ_p \Bigl(\frac{1}{n} \Bigr)^n \quad(\mathrm{mod}\ {p^3}),$$ which solves another conjecture of Deines, Fuselier, Long, Swisher and Tu.

From it we deduce some related supercongruences, which extend certain recent results and confirm a supercongruence conjecture.

Some of these results extend the four Rodriguez-Villegas supercongruences on the truncated ${}_3F_2$ hypergeometric series. The corresponding conjectural supercongruences modulo $p^3$ are also proposed for further research.

On a conjecture of Chen-Guo-Wang
Towards confirming Sun's conjecture on the strict log-concavity of combinatorial sequence involving the n$th$ Bernoulli number, Chen, Guo and Wang proposed a conjecture about the log-concavity of the function $θ(x)=\sqrt[x]{2ζ(x)Γ(x+1)}$ for $x\in (6,\infty)$, where $ζ(x)$ is the Riemann zeta function and $Γ(x)$ is the Gamma function. In this paper, we first prove this conjecture along the spirit of Zhu's previous work. Second, we extend Chen et al.'s conjecture in the sense of almost infinite log-monotonicity of combinatorial sequences, which was also introduced by Chen et al. Furthermore, by using an analogue criterion to the one of Chen, Guo and Wang, we deduce the almost infinite log-monotonicity of the sequences $\frac{1}{\sqrt[n]{|B_{2n}|}}$, $T_n$ and $\frac{1}{\sqrt[n]{T_n}}$, where $B_{2n}$ and $T_{n}$ are the $2n$th Bernoulli number and the $n$th tangent number, respectively. These results can be seen as extensions of some solved conjectures of Sun.

Two series expansions for the logarithm of the gamma function involving Stirling numbers and containing only rational coefficients for certain arguments related to $π^{-1}$
Published in Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications (Elsevier), vol. 442, no. 2, pp. 404-434, 2016 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, two new series for the logarithm of the $Γ$-function are presented and studied. Their polygamma analogs are also obtained and discussed. These series involve the Stirling numbers of the first kind and have the property to contain only rational coefficients for certain arguments related to $π^{-1}$. In particular, for any value of the form $\lnΓ(\frac{1}{2}n\pmαπ^{-1})$ and $Ψ_k(\frac{1}{2}n\pmαπ^{-1})$, where $Ψ_k$ stands for the $k$th polygamma function, $α$ is positive rational greater than $\frac{1}{6}π$, $n$ is integer and $k$ is non-negative integer, these series have rational terms only. In the specified zones of convergence, derived series converge uniformly at the same rate as $\sum(n\ln^m\!n)^{-2}$, where $m=1, 2, 3,\ldots$\,, depending on the order of the polygamma function. Explicit expansions into the series with rational coefficients are given for the most attracting values, such as $\lnΓ(π^{-1})$, $\lnΓ(2π^{-1})$, $\lnΓ(\tfrac{1}{2}+π^{-1})$, $Ψ(π^{-1})$, $Ψ(\tfrac{1}{2}+π^{-1})$ and $Ψ_k(π^{-1})$. Besides, in this article, the reader will also find a number of other series involving Stirling numbers, Gregory's coefficients (logarithmic numbers, also known as Bernoulli numbers of the second kind), Cauchy numbers and generalized Bernoulli numbers. Finally, several estimations and full asymptotics for Gregory's coefficients, for Cauchy numbers, for certain generalized Bernoulli numbers and for certain sums with the Stirling numbers are obtained. In particular, these include sharp bounds for Gregory's coefficients and for the Cauchy numbers of the second kind.

Higher order log-monotonicity of combinatorial sequences
A sequence $\{z_n\}_{n\geq0}$ is called ratio log-convex in the sense that the ratio sequence $\{\frac{z_{n+1}}{z_n}\}_{n\geq0}$ is log-convex. Based on a three-term recurrence for sequences, we develop techniques for dealing with the ratio log-convexity of ratio sequences. As applications, we prove that the ratio sequences of numbers, including the derangement numbers, the Motzkin numbers, the Fine numbers, Franel numbers and the Domb numbers are ratio log-convex, respectively. Finally, we not only prove that the sequence of derangement numbers is asymptotically infinitely log-monotonic, but also show some infinite log-monotonicity of some numbers related to the Gamma function, in particular, implying two results of Chen {\it et al.} on the infinite log-monotonicity of the Catalan numbers and the central binomial coefficients.

Monotonicity and log-behavior of some functions related to the Euler Gamma function
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this paper is to develop analytic techniques to deal with certain monotonicity of combinatorial sequences. (1) A criterion for the monotonicity of the function $\sqrt[x]{f(x)}$ is given, which is a continuous analog for one result of Wang and Zhu. (2) The log-behavior of the functions $θ(x)=\sqrt[x]{2 ζ(x)Γ(x+1)}$ and $F(x)=\sqrt[x]{\frac{Γ(ax+b+1)}{Γ(c x+d+1)Γ(e x+f+1)}}$ is considered, where $ζ(x)$ and $Γ(x)$ are the Riemann zeta function and the Euler Gamma function, respectively. As consequences, the strict log-concavities of the function $θ(x)$ (a conjecture of Chen {\it et al.}) and $\{\sqrt[n]{z_n}\}$ for some combinatorial sequences (including the Bernoulli numbers, the Tangent numbers, the Catalan numbers, the Fuss-Catalan numbers and some Binomial coefficients) are demonstrated. In particular, this contains some results of Chen {\it et al.}, Luca and Stănică. (3). By researching logarithmically complete monotonicity of some functions, the infinite log-monotonicity of the sequence $\{\frac{(n_{0}+ia)!}{(k_0+ib)!(\overline{k_0}+i\overline{b})!}\}_{i\geq0}$ is proved. This generalizes two results of Chen {\it et al.} that both the Catalan numbers $\frac{1}{n+1}\binom{2n}{n}$ and central binomial coefficients $\binom{2n}{n}$ are infinitely log-monotonic and strengths one result of Su and Wang that $\binom{dn}{δn}$ is log-convex in $n$. (4) The asymptotically infinite log-monotonicity of derangement numbers is showed. (5)The logarithmically complete monotonicity of functions $1/\sqrt[x]{a ζ(x+b)Γ(x+c)}$ and $\sqrt[x]{ρ\prod_{i=1}^n\frac{Γ(x+a_i)}{Γ(x+b_i)}}$ is also obtained, which generalizes the results of Lee and Tepedelenlioǧlu, Qi and Li.

Log-convexity and log-concavity for series in gamma ratios and applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
Polynomial sequence ${P_m}_{m\geq0}$ is $q$-logarithmically concave if $P_{m}^2-P_{m+1}P_{m-1}$ is a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients for any $m\geq{1}$. We introduce an analogue of this notion for formal power series whose coefficients are nonnegative continuous functions of parameter. Four types of such power series are considered where parameter dependence is expressed by a ratio of gamma functions. We prove six theorems stating various forms of $q$-logarithmic concavity and convexity of these series. The main motivating examples for these investigations are hypergeometric functions. In the last section of the paper we present new inequalities for the Kummer function, the ratio of the Gauss functions and the generalized hypergeometric function obtained as direct applications of the general theorems.

A generalization of the Mehta-Wang determinant and Askey-Wilson polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the Gaussian symplectic ensemble, Mehta and Wang evaluated the $n$ by $n$ determinant $\det((a+j-i)Γ(b+j+i))$ in 2000. When $a=0$, Ciucu and Krattenthaler computed the associated Pfaffian $\Pf((j-i)Γ(b+j+i))$ with an application to the two dimensional dimer system in 2011. Recently we have generalized the latter Pfaffian formula with a $q$-analogue by replacing the Gamma function by the moment sequence of the little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. On the other hand, Nishizawa has found a $q$-analogue of the Mehta--Wang formula. Our purpose is to generalize both the Mehta-Wang and Nishizawa formulae by using the moment sequence of the little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. It turns out that the corresponding determinant can be evaluated explicitly in terms of the Askey-Wilson polynomials.
