Holes with hats and Erdős-Hajnal
A "hole-with-hat" in a graph $G$ is an induced subgraph of $G$ that consists of a cycle of length at least four, together with one further vertex that has exactly two neighbours in the cycle, adjacent to each other, and the "house" is the smallest, on five vertices. It is not known whether there exists $ε>0$ such that every graph $G$ containing no house has a clique or stable set of cardinality at least $|G|^ε$; this is one of the three smallest open cases of the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture and has been the subject of much study.
We prove that there exists $ε>0$ such that every graph $G$ with no hole-with-hat has a clique or stable set of cardinality at least $|G|^ε$

Let $\mathrm{rex}(n, F)$ denote the maximum number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph that is regular and does not contain $F$ as a subgraph. We give lower bounds on $\mathrm{rex}(n, F)$, that are best possible up to a constant factor, when $F$ is one of $C_4$, $K_{2,t}$, $K_{3,3}$ or $K_{s,t}$ when $t>s!$.

A pairing of a graph $G$ is a perfect matching of the complete graph having the same vertex set as $G$. If every pairing of $G$ can be extended to a Hamiltonian cycle of the underlying complete graph using only edges from $G$, then $G$ has the PH-property. A somewhat weaker property is the PMH-property, whereby every perfect matching of $G$ can be extended to a Hamiltonian cycle of $G$. In an attempt to characterise all 4-regular graphs having the PH-property, we answer a question made in 2015 by Alahmadi et al. by showing that the Cartesian product $C_p\square C_q$ of two cycles on $p$ and $q$ vertices does not have the PMH-property, except for $C_4\square C_4$ which is known to have the PH-property.
New Methods in Coding Theory: Error-Correcting Codes and the Shannon Capacity
In this thesis we present several results in coding theory, concerning error-correcting codes and the Shannon capacity.
1. We give a general symmetry reduction of matrices occuring in semidefinite programs in coding theory.
2. We apply the symmetry reduction to efficiently compute semidefinite programming upper bounds for nonbinary error-correcting codes equipped with the Hamming distance (joint work with Bart Litjens and Lex Schrijver), with the Lee distance and for binary constant weight codes.
3. We explore other methods to find new upper bounds for nonbinary codes with the Hamming distance, based on combinatorial divisibility arguments.
4. We study uniqueness and classification of codes, using the output of the semidefinite programming solver. Most of our classification results are related to subcodes of the binary Golay code. This is joint work with Andries Brouwer.
5. We consider the Shannon capacity of circular graphs. The circular graph $C_{d,q}$ is the graph with vertex set $\mathbb{Z}_q$ (the cyclic group of order q) in which two distinct vertices are adjacent if and only if their distance (mod $q$) is strictly less than $d$. The Shannon capacity of $C_{d,q}$ can be seen to only depend on the fraction q/d. We prove that the function which assigns to each rational number $q/d$ the Shannon capacity of $C_{d,q}$ is continuous at integer points $q/d$. Moreover, we give a new lower bound on the Shannon capacity of the $7$-cycle. This is joint work with Lex Schrijver.

Helly-gap of a graph and vertex eccentricities

A new metric parameter for a graph, Helly-gap, is introduced. A graph $G$ is called $α$-weakly-Helly if any system of pairwise intersecting disks in $G$ has a nonempty common intersection when the radius of each disk is increased by an additive value $α$. The minimum $α$ for which a graph $G$ is $α$-weakly-Helly is called the Helly-gap of $G$ and denoted by $α(G)$. The Helly-gap of a graph $G$ is characterized by distances in the injective hull $\mathcal{H}(G)$, which is a (unique) minimal Helly graph which contains $G$ as an isometric subgraph. This characterization is used as a tool to generalize many eccentricity related results known for Helly graphs ($α(G)=0$), as well as for chordal graphs ($α(G)\le 1$), distance-hereditary graphs ($α(G)\le 1$) and $δ$-hyperbolic graphs ($α(G)\le 2δ$), to all graphs, parameterized by their Helly-gap $α(G)$. Several additional graph classes are shown to have a bounded Helly-gap, including AT-free graphs and graphs with bounded tree-length, bounded chordality or bounded $α_i$-metric.
A strategy for Isolator in the Toucher-Isolator game on trees

In the Toucher-Isolator game, introduced recently by Dowden, Kang, Mikalački and Stojaković, Toucher and Isolator alternately claim an edge from a graph such that Toucher aims to touch as many vertices as possible, while Isolator aims to isolate as many vertices as possible, where Toucher plays first. Among trees with $n$ vertices, they showed that the star is the best choice for Isolator and they asked for the most suitable tree for Toucher. Later, Räty showed that the answer is the path with $n$ vertices. We give a simple alternative proof of this result. The method to determine where Isolator should play is by breaking down the gains and losses in each move of both players.
Lower bound of the energy of a complex unit gain graph in terms of the matching number of its underlying graph
We establish a lower bound for the energy of a complex unit gain graph in terms of the matching number of its underlying graph, and characterize all the complex unit gain graphs whose energy reaches this bound.
Expansion Posets for Polygon Cluster Algebras
Define an expansion poset to be the poset of monomials of a cluster variable attached to an arc in a polygon, where each monomial is represented by the corresponding combinatorial object from some fixed combinatorial cluster expansion formula. We introduce an involution on several of the interrelated combinatorial objects and constructions associated to type $A$ surface cluster algebras, including certain classes of arcs, triangulations, and distributive lattices. We use these involutions to formulate a dual version of skein relations for arcs, and dual versions of three existing expansion posets. In particular, this leads to two new cluster expansion formulas, and recovers the lattice path expansion of Propp et al. We provide an explicit, structure-preserving poset isomorphism between an expansion poset and its dual version from the dual arc. We also show that an expansion poset and its dual version constructed from the same arc are dual in the sense of distributive lattices.
We show that any expansion poset is isomorphic to a closed interval in one of the lattices $L(m,n)$ of Young diagrams contained in an $m \times n$ grid, and that any $L(m,n)$ has a covering by such intervals. We give two formulas for the rank function of any lattice path expansion poset, and prove that this rank function is unimodal whenever the underlying snake graph is built from at most four maximal straight segments. We show that the support of any type $A$ cluster variable is the orbit of a groupoid. Finally, in work joint with Nicholas Ovenhouse, we partially generalize $T$-paths to configurations of affine flags, and prove that a $T$-path expansion analogous to the type $A$ case holds when the initial seed is from a fan triangulation.
ProPs of graphs and generalised traces
We assign generalised convolutions (resp. traces) to graphs whose edges are decorated by smooth kernels (resp. smoothing operators) on a closed manifold. To do so, we introduce the concept of TraPs (Traces and Permutations), which roughly correspond to ProPs (Products and Permutations) without vertical concatenation and equipped with families of generalised partial traces. They can be equipped with a ProP structure in deriving vertical concatenation from the partial traces and we relate TraPs to wheeled ProPs first introduced by Merkulov. We further build their free object and give precise proofs of universal properties of ProPs and TraPs.

Given a set $\mathcal{H}$ of graphs, let $f_\mathcal{H}^\star\colon \mathbb{N}_{>0}\to \mathbb{N}_{>0}$ be the optimal $χ$-binding function of the class of $\mathcal{H}$-free graphs, that is, $$f_\mathcal{H}^\star(ω)=\max\{χ(G): G\text{ is } \mathcal{H}\text{-free, } ω(G)=ω\}.$$ In this paper, we combine the two decomposition methods by homogeneous sets and clique-separators in order to determine optimal $χ$-binding functions for subclasses of $P_5$-free graphs and of $(C_5,C_7,\ldots)$-free graphs. In particular, we prove the following for each $ω\geq 1$:
(i) $\ f_{\{P_5,banner\}}^\star(ω)=f_{3K_1}^\star(ω)\in Θ(ω^2/\log(ω)),$
(ii) $\ f_{\{P_5,co-banner\}}^\star(ω)=f^\star_{\{2K_2\}}(ω)\in\mathcal{O}(ω^2),$
(iii) $\ f_{\{C_5,C_7,\ldots,banner\}}^\star(ω)=f^\star_{\{C_5,3K_1\}}(ω)\notin \mathcal{O}(ω),$ and
(iv) $\ f_{\{P_5,C_4\}}^\star(ω)=\lceil(5ω-1)/4\rceil.$
We also characterise, for each of our considered graph classes, all graphs $G$ with $χ(G)>χ(G-u)$ for each $u\in V(G)$. From these structural results, we can prove Reed's conjecture -- relating chromatic number, clique number, and maximum degree of a graph -- for $(P_5,banner)$-free graphs.

Lattice-based cryptography is not only for thwarting future quantum computers, and is also the basis of Fully Homomorphic Encryption. Motivated from the advantage of graph homomorphisms we combine graph homomorphisms with graph total colorings together for designing new types of graph homomorphisms: totally-colored graph homomorphisms, graphic-lattice homomorphisms from sets to sets, every-zero graphic group homomorphisms from sets to sets. Our graph-homomorphism lattices are made up by graph homomorphisms. These new homomorphisms induce some problems of graph theory, for example, Number String Decomposition and Graph Homomorphism Problem.

This article focuses on finding the eigenvalues of the Laplacian matrix of the comaximal graph $Γ(\mathbb Z_n)$ of the ring $\mathbb Z_n$ for $n> 2$. We determine the eigenvalues of $Γ(\mathbb Z_n)$ for various $n$ and also provide a procedure to find the eigenvalues of $Γ(\mathbb Z_n)$ for any $n> 2$. We show that $Γ(\mathbb Z_n)$ is Laplacian Integral for $n=p^αq^β$ where $p,q$ are primes and $α, β$ are non-negative integers. The algebraic and vertex connectivity of $Γ(\mathbb Z_n)$ have been shown to be equal for all $n> 2$. An upper bound on the second largest eigenvalue of $Γ(\mathbb Z_n)$ has been obtained and a necessary and sufficient condition for its equality has also been determined. Finally we discuss the multiplicity of the spectral radius and the multiplicity of the algebraic connectivity of $Γ(\mathbb Z_n)$. Some problems have been discussed at the end of this article for further research.
On new record graphs close to bipartite Moore graphs

The modelling of interconnection networks by graphs motivated the study of several extremal problems that involve well known parameters of a graph (degree, diameter, girth and order) and ask for the optimal value of one of them while holding the other two fixed. Here we focus in {\em bipartite Moore graphs\/}, that is, bipartite graphs attaining the optimum order, fixed either the degree/diameter or degree/girth. The fact that there are very few bipartite Moore graphs suggests the relaxation of some of the constraints implied by the bipartite Moore bound. First we deal with {\em local bipartite Moore graphs}. We find in some cases those local bipartite Moore graphs with local girths as close as possible to the local girths given by a bipartite Moore graph. Second, we construct a family of $(q+2)$-bipartite graphs of order $2(q^2+q+5)$ and diameter $3$, for $q$ a power of prime. These graphs attain the record value for $q=9$ and improve the values for $q=11$ and $q=13$.
Regarding two conjectures on clique and biclique partitions

For a graph $G$, let $cp(G)$ denote the minimum number of cliques of $G$ needed to cover the edges of $G$ exactly once. Similarly, let $bp_k(G)$ denote the minimum number of bicliques (i.e. complete bipartite subgraphs of $G$) needed to cover each edge of $G$ exactly $k$ times. We consider two conjectures -- one regarding the maximum possible value of $cp(G) + cp(\overline{G})$ (due to de Caen, Erdős, Pullman and Wormald) and the other regarding $bp_k(K_n)$ (due to de Caen, Gregory and Pritikin). We disprove the first, obtaining improved lower and upper bounds on $\max_G cp(G) + cp(\overline{G})$, and we prove an asymptotic version of the second, showing that $bp_k(K_n) = (1+o(1))n$.
The $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-Number of a Simplicial Complex

Let $Δ$ be a simplicial complex on $[n]$. The $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-complex of $Δ$ is the simplicial complex $δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$ on $[n]$ for which the facet ideal of $Δ$ is equal to the Stanley--Reisner ideal of $δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$. Furthermore, for each $k = 2,3,\ldots$\,, we introduce {\em $k^{th}$ $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-complex} $δ^{(k)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$ which is inductively defined by $δ^{(k)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) = δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(δ^{(k-1)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ))$ with setting $δ^{(1)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) = δ_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ)$. One can set $δ^{(0)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) = Δ$. The $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of $Δ$ is the smallest integer $k > 0$ for which $δ^{(k)}_{\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}}(Δ) \simeq Δ$. In the present paper we are especially interested in the $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of a finite graph, which can be regraded as a simplicial complex of dimension one. It is shown that the $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of the finite graph $K_n\coprod K_m$ on $[n + m]$, which is the disjoint union of the complete graphs $K_n$ on $[n]$ and $K_m$ on $[m]$, where $n \geq 2$ and $m \geq 2$ with $(n,m) \neq (2,2)$, is equal to $n + m + 2$. Its corollary says that the $\mathcal{N}\mathcal{F}$-number of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n,m}$ on $[n+m]$ is also equal to $n + m + 2$.

We compute the sandpile groups of families of planar graphs having a common weak dual by evaluating the indeterminates of the critical ideals of the weak dual at the lengths of the cycles bounding the interior faces. This method allow us to determine the algebraic structure of the sandpile groups of outerplanar graphs, and can be used to compute the sandpile groups of many other planar graph families. Finally, we compute the identity element for the sandpile groups of the dual graphs of many outerplane graphs.
Italian domination in generalized Petersen graphs
In a graph $G=(V,E)$, each vertex $v\in V$ is labelled with $0$, $1$ or $2$ such that each vertex labelled with $0$ is adjacent to at least one vertex labelled $2$ or two vertices labelled $1$. Such kind of labelling is called an Italian dominating function (IDF) of $G$. The weight of an IDF $f$ is $w(f)=\sum_{v\in V}f(v)$. The Italian domination number of $G$ is $γ_{I}(G)=\min_{f} w(f)$. Gao et al. (2019) have determined the value of $γ_I(P(n,3))$. In this article, we focus on the study of the Italian domination number of generalized Petersen graphs $P(n, k)$, $k\neq3$. We determine the values of $γ_I(P(n, 1))$, $γ_I(P(n, 2))$ and $γ_I(P(n, k))$ for $k\ge4$, $k\equiv2,3(\bmod5)$ and $n\equiv0(\bmod5)$. For other $P(n,k)$, we present a bound of $γ_I(P(n, k))$. With the obtained results, we partially solve the open problem presented by Brešar et al. (2007) by giving $P(n,1)$ is an example for which $γ_I=γ_{r2}$ and characterizing $P(n,2)$ for which $γ_I(P(n,2))=γ_{r2}(P(n,2))$. Moreover, our results imply $P(n,1)$ $(n\equiv0(\bmod\ 4))$ is Italian, $P(n,1)$ $(n\not\equiv0(\bmod\ 4))$ and $P(n,2)$ are not Italian.
Reducing graph transversals via edge contractions

For a graph invariant $π$, the Contraction($π$) problem consists in, given a graph $G$ and two positive integers $k,d$, deciding whether one can contract at most $k$ edges of $G$ to obtain a graph in which $π$ has dropped by at least $d$. Galby et al. [ISAAC 2019, MFCS 2019] recently studied the case where $π$ is the size of a minimum dominating set. We focus on graph invariants defined as the minimum size of a vertex set that hits all the occurrences of graphs in a collection ${\cal H}$ according to a fixed containment relation. We prove co-NP-hardness results under some assumptions on the graphs in ${\cal H}$, which in particular imply that Contraction($π$) is co-NP-hard even for fixed $k=d=1$ when $π$ is the size of a minimum feedback vertex set or an odd cycle transversal. In sharp contrast, we show that when $π$ is the size of a minimum vertex cover, the problem is in XP parameterized by $d$.
Flow-Partitionable Signed Graphs
The NP-hard problem of correlation clustering is to partition a signed graph such that the number of conflicts between the partition and the signature of the graph is minimized. This paper studies graph signatures that allow the optimal partition to be found efficiently. We define the class of flow-partitionable signed graphs, which have the property that the standard linear programming relaxation based on so-called cycle inequalities is tight. In other words, flow-partitionable signed graphs satisfy an exact max-multiflow-min-multicut relation in the associated instances of minimum multicut. In this work we propose to characterize flow-partitionable signed graphs in terms of forbidden minors. Our initial results include two infinite classes of forbidden minors, which are sufficient if the positive subgraph is a circuit or a tree. For the general case we present another forbidden minor and point out a connection to open problems in the theory of ideal clutters.

We extend the duality between acyclic orientations and totally cyclic orientations on planar graphs to dualities on graphs on orientable surfaces by introducing boundary acyclic orientations and totally bi-walkable orientations. In addition, we provide a reciprocity theorem connecting local tensions and boundary acyclic orientations. Furthermore, we define the balanced flow polynomial which is connected with tension polynomial by duality and with totally bi-walkable orientations by reciprocity.
