A preparation theorem for the kashiwara $b(\infty)$ crystal
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Kashiwara $B(\infty)$ crystal pertains to a Verma module for a Kac- Moody Lie algebra. Ostensibly it provides only a parametrisation of the global/canonical basis for the latter. Yet it is much more having a rich combinatorial structure from which one may read of a parametrisation of the corresponding basis for any integrable highest weight module, describe the decomposition of the tensor products of highest weight modules, the Demazure submodules of integrable highest weight modules and Demazure flags for translates of Demazure modules. $B(\infty)$ has in general infinitely many presentations as subsets of countably many copies of the natural numbers each given by successive reduced decompositions of Weyl group elements. In each presentation there is an action of Kashiwara operators determined by Kashiwara functions. These functions are linear in the entries. Thus a natural question is to show that in each presentation the subset $B(\infty)$ is polyhedral. Here a new approach to this question is initiated based on constructing dual Kashiwara functions and in this it is enough to show that the latter are also linear in the entries. The present work resolves one of the two very difficult obstacles in a step-wise construction, namely that the resulting functions must satisfy a sum, or simply S, condition. It depends very subtly on inequalities between the coefficients occurring in functions obtained from the previous step. The only remaining obstacle, that sufficiently many functions are obtained, can at least be verified in many families of cases, though this is to be postponed to a subsequent paper. This theory has some intriguing numerology which involves the Catalan numbers in two different ways.

Ranks of subgroups in boundedly generated groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that an infinite residually finite boundedly generated group has an infinite chain of finite index subgroups with ranks uniformly bounded, and give (sublinear) upper bounds on the ranks of arbitrary finite index subgroups of boundedly generated groups (examples which come close to achieving these bounds are presented). This proves a strong form of a conjecture of Abert, Jaikin-Zapirain, and Nikolov which asserts that the rank gradient of infinite boundedly generated residually finite groups is $0$. Furthermore, our first result establishes a variant of a conjecture of Lubotzky on the ranks of finite index subgroups of special linear groups over the integers, and is analogous to a result of Pyber and Segal for solvable groups.
Abelian covers of alternating groups

Let $G=A_n$, a finite alternating group. We study the commuting graph of $G$ and establish, for all possible values of $n$ barring $13, 14, 17$ and $19$, whether or not the independence number is equal to the clique-covering number.

Additive triples of bijections, or the toroidal semiqueens problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove an asymptotic for the number of additive triples of bijections $\{1,\dots,n\}\to\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, that is, the number of pairs of bijections $π_1,π_2\colon \{1,\dots,n\}\to\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$ such that the pointwise sum $π_1+π_2$ is also a bijection. This problem is equivalent to counting the number of orthomorphisms or complete mappings of $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$, to counting the number of arrangements of $n$ mutually nonattacking semiqueens on an $n\times n$ toroidal chessboard, and to counting the number of transversals in a cyclic Latin square. The method of proof is a version of the Hardy--Littlewood circle method from analytic number theory, adapted to the group $(\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})^n$.

Extractors in Paley graphs: a random model
A well-known conjecture in analytic number theory states that for every pair of sets $X,Y\subset\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$, each of size at least $\log ^C p$ (for some constant $C$) we have that the number of pairs $(x,y)\in X\times Y$ such that $x+y$ is a quadratic residue modulo $p$ differs from $\frac12|X||Y|$ by $o\left(|X||Y|\right)$. We address the probabilistic analogue of this question, that is for every fixed $δ>0$, given a finite group $G$ and $A\subset G$ a random subset of density $\frac12$, we prove that with high probability for all subsets $|X|,|Y|\geq \log ^{2+δ} |G|$, the number of pairs $(x,y)\in X\times Y$ such that $xy\in A$ differs from $\frac12|X||Y|$ by $o\left(|X||Y|\right)$.
The complexity of signed graph and edge-coloured graph homomorphisms
Published in Discrete Mathematics 340(2):223-235, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
We study homomorphism problems of signed graphs from a computational point of view. A signed graph $(G,Σ)$ is a graph $G$ where each edge is given a sign, positive or negative; $Σ\subseteq E(G)$ denotes the set of negative edges. Thus, $(G, Σ)$ is a $2$-edge-coloured graph with the property that the edge-colours, $\{+, -\}$, form a group under multiplication. Central to the study of signed graphs is the operation of switching at a vertex, that results in changing the sign of each incident edge. We study two types of homomorphisms of a signed graph $(G,Σ)$ to a signed graph $(H,Π)$: ec-homomorphisms and s-homomorphisms. Each is a standard graph homomorphism of $G$ to $H$ with some additional constraint. In the former, edge-signs are preserved. In the latter, edge-signs are preserved after the switching operation has been applied to a subset of vertices of $G$. We prove a dichotomy theorem for s-homomorphism problems for a large class of (fixed) target signed graphs $(H,Π)$. Specifically, as long as $(H,Π)$ does not contain a negative (respectively a positive) loop, the problem is polynomial-time solvable if the core of $(H,Π)$ has at most two edges, and is NP-complete otherwise. (Note that this covers all simple signed graphs.) The same dichotomy holds if $(H,Π)$ has no negative digons, and we conjecture that it holds always. In our proofs, we reduce s-homomorphism problems to certain ec-homomorphism problems, for which we are able to show a dichotomy. In contrast, we prove that a dichotomy theorem for ec-homomorphism problems (even when restricted to bipartite target signed graphs) would settle the dichotomy conjecture of Feder and Vardi.

From the weak Bruhat order to crystal posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the ways in which fundamental properties of the weak Bruhat order on a Weyl group can be lifted (or not) to a corresponding highest weight crystal graph, viewed as a partially ordered set; the latter projects to the weak order via the key map. First, a crystal theoretic analogue of the statement that any two reduced expressions for the same Coxeter group element are related by Coxeter moves is proven for all lower intervals in a simply or doubly laced crystal. On the other hand, it is shown that no finite set of moves exists, even in type A, for arbitrary crystal graph intervals. In fact, it is shown that there are relations of arbitrarily high degree amongst crystal operators that are not implied by lower degree relations. Second, for crystals associated to Kac-Moody algebras it is shown for lower intervals that the Mobius function is always 0, 1, or -1, and in finite type this is also proven for upper intervals, with a precise formula given in each case. Moreover, the order complex for each of these intervals is proven to be homotopy equivalent to a ball or to a sphere of some dimension, despite often not being shellable. For general intervals, examples are constructed with arbitrarily large Mobius function, again even in type A. Any interval having Mobius function other than 0, 1, or -1 is shown to contain within it a relation amongst crystal operators that is not implied by the relations giving rise to the local structure of the crystal, making precise a tight relationship between the Mobius function and these somewhat unexpected relations appearing in crystals. New properties of the key map are also derived. The key is shown to be determined entirely by the edge-colored poset-theoretic structure of the crystal, and a recursive algorithm is given for calculating it.

On the topology of a boolean representable simplicial complex
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is proved that fundamental groups of boolean representable simplicial complexes are free and the rank is determined by the number and nature of the connected components of their graph of flats for dimension $\geq 2$. In the case of dimension 2, it is shown that boolean representable simplicial complexes have the homotopy type of a wedge of spheres of dimensions 1 and 2. Also in the case of dimension 2, necessary and sufficient conditions for shellability and being sequentially Cohen-Macaulay are determined. Complexity bounds are provided for all the algorithms involved.

Graph polynomials and link invariants as positive type functions on Thompson's group F
Published in J. Knot Theory Ramif. Vol. 28, No. 02, 1950006 (2019) • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper Jones introduced a correspondence between elements of the Thompson group $F$ and certain graphs/links. It follows from his work that several polynomial invariants of links, such as the Kauffman bracket, can be reinterpreted as coefficients of certain unitary representations of $F$. We give a somewhat different and elementary proof of this fact for the Kauffman bracket evaluated at certain roots of unity by means of a statistical mechanics model interpretation. Moreover, by similar methods we show that, for some particular specializations of the variables, other familiar link invariants and graph polynomials, namely the number of $N$-colourings and the Tutte polynomial, can be viewed as positive definite functions on $F$.

Generating functions for descents over permutations which avoid sets of consecutive patterns
We extend the reciprocity method of Jones and Remmel to study generating functions of the form $$\sum_{n \geq 0} \frac{t^n}{n!} \sum_{σ\in \mathcal{NM}_n(Γ)}x^{\mathrm{LRmin}(σ)}y^{1+\mathrm{des}(σ)}$$ where $Γ$ is a set of permutations which start with 1 and have at most one descent, $\mathcal{NM}_n(Γ)$ is the set of permutations $σ$ in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ which have no $Γ$-matches, $\mathrm{des}(σ)$ is the number of descents of $σ$ and $\mathrm{LRmin}(σ)$ is the number of left-to-right minima of $σ$. We show that this generating function is of the form $\left( \frac{1}{U_Γ(t,y)}\right)^x$ where $U_Γ(t,y) = \sum_{n\geq 0}U_{Γ,n}(y) \frac{t^n}{n!}$ and the coefficients $U_{Γ,n}(y)$ satisfy some simple recursions in the case where $Γ$ equals $\{1324,123\}$, $\{1324 \cdots p,12 \cdots (p-1)\}$ for $p \geq 5$, or $Γ$ is the set of permutations $σ= σ_1 \cdots σ_n$ of length $n=k_1+k_2$ where $k_1,k_2 \geq 2$, $σ_1 =1$, $σ_{k_1+1}=2$, and $\mathrm{des}(σ) =1$.
Relative Cayley graphs of finite groups
The relative Cayley graph of a group $G$ with respect to its proper subgroup $H$, is a graph whose vertices are elements of $G$ and two vertices $h\in H$ and $g\in G$ are adjacent if $g=hc$ for some $c\in C$, where $C$ is an inversed-closed subset of $G$. We study the relative Cayley graphs and, among other results, we discuss on their connectivity and forbidden structures, and compute some of their important numerical invariants.

An Explicit Description of the B(\infty) Crystal For Generalized Quantum Groups of a Family of Comet Quivers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tristan Bozec gave a definition of generalized quantum groups that extends the usual definition of quantum groups to finite quivers with loops at vertices, and he introduced a theory of generalized crystals for this new family of Hopf algebras. We explicitly characterize the generalized crystal $\mathcal{B}(\infty)$ associated to a certain family of quivers with multiple loops by providing a complete set of relations among the Kashiwara operators themselves.

Structure and automorphisms of primitive coherent configurations
Coherent configurations (CCs) are highly regular colorings of the set of ordered pairs of a "vertex set"; each color represents a "constituent digraph." CCs arise in the study of permutation groups, combinatorial structures such as partially balanced designs, and the analysis of algorithms; their history goes back to Schur in the 1930s. A CC is primitive (PCC) if all its constituent digraphs are connected. We address the problem of classifying PCCs with large automorphism groups. This project was started in Babai's 1981 paper in which he showed that only the trivial PCC admits more than $\exp(\tilde{O}(n^{1/2}))$ automorphisms. (Here, $n$ is the number of vertices and the $\tilde{O}$ hides polylogarithmic factors.) In the present paper we classify all PCCs with more than $\exp(\tilde{O}(n^{1/3}))$ automorphisms, making the first progress on Babai's conjectured classification of all PCCs with more than $\exp(n^ε)$ automorphisms. A corollary to Babai's 1981 result solved a then 100-year-old problem on primitive but not doubly transitive permutation groups, giving an $\exp(\tilde{O}(n^{1/2}))$ bound on their order. In a similar vein, our result implies an $\exp(\tilde{O}(n^{1/3}))$ upper bound on the order of such groups, with known exceptions. This improvement of Babai's result was previously known only through the Classification of Finite Simple Groups (Cameron, 1981), while our proof, like Babai's, is elementary and almost purely combinatorial. Our analysis relies on a new combinatorial structure theory we develop for PCCs. In particular, we demonstrate the presence of "asymptotically uniform clique geometries" on PCCs in a certain range of the parameters.

Duality of codes supported on regular lattices, with an application to enumerative combinatorics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a general class of regular weight functions on finite abelian groups, and study the combinatorics, the duality theory, and the metric properties of codes endowed with such functions. The weights are obtained by composing a suitable support map with the rank function of a graded lattice satisfying certain regularity properties. A regular weight on a group canonically induces a regular weight on the character group, and invertible MacWilliams identities always hold for such a pair of weights. Moreover, the Krawtchouk coefficients of the corresponding MacWilliams transformation have a precise combinatorial significance, and can be expressed in terms of the invariants of the underlying lattice. In particular, they are easy to compute in many examples. Several weight functions traditionally studied in Coding Theory belong to the class of weights introduced in this paper. Our lattice-theory approach also offers a control on metric structures that a regular weight induces on the underlying group. In particular, it allows to show that every finite abelian group admits weight functions that, simultaneously, give rise to MacWilliams identities, and endow the underlying group with a metric space structure. We propose a general notion of extremality for (not necessarily additive) codes in groups endowed with semi-regular supports, and establish a Singleton-type bound. We then investigate the combinatorics and duality theory of extremal codes, extending classical results on the weight and distance distribution of error-correcting codes. Finally, we apply the theory of MacWilliams identities to enumerative combinatorics problems, obtaining closed formulae for the number of rectangular matrices over a finite having prescribed rank and satisfying some linear conditions.

Equivariant maps related to the topological Tverberg conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using equivariant obstruction theory we construct equivariant maps from certain classifying spaces to representation spheres for cyclic groups, product of elementary Abelian groups and dihedral groups. Restricting them to finite skeleta constructs equivariant maps between spaces which are related to the topological Tverberg conjecture. This answers negatively a question of Özaydin posed in relation to weaker versions of the same conjecture. Further, it also has consequences for Borsuk-Ulam properties of representations of cyclic and dihedral groups.
Automata, reduced words, and Garside shadows in Coxeter groups
Published in Journal of algebra (computational section), vol. 457 (2016), 331-456 • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we introduce and investigate a class of finite deterministic automata that all recognize the language of reduced words of a finitely generated Coxeter system (W,S). The definition of these automata is straightforward as it only requires the notion of weak order on (W,S) and the related notion of Garside shadows in (W,S), an analog of the notion of a Garside family. Then we discuss the relations between this class of automata and the canonical automaton built from Brink and Howlett's small roots. We end this article by providing partial positive answers to two conjectures: (1) the automata associated to the smallest Garside shadow is minimal; (2) the canonical automaton is minimal if and only if the support of all small roots is spherical, i.e., the corresponding root system is finite.

Torsion in the homology of Milnor fibers of hyperplane arrangements
Published in Combinatorial Methods in Topology and Algebra, Springer INdAM Series, vol. 12, 2015, pp. 31-36 • View PublicationBIB
As is well-known, the homology groups of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement are torsion-free. Nevertheless, as we showed in a recent paper [arXiv:1209.3414] the homology groups of the Milnor fiber of such an arrangement can have non-trivial integer torsion. We give here a brief account of the techniques that go into proving this result, outline some of its applications, and indicate some further questions that it brings to light.

Symmetric group characters as symmetric functions (extended abstract)
The irreducible characters of the symmetric group are a symmetric polynomial in the eigenvalues of a permutation matrix. They can therefore be realized as a symmetric function that can be evaluated at a set of variables and form a basis of the symmetric functions. This basis of the symmetric functions is of non-homogeneous degree and the (outer) product structure coefficients are the stable Kronecker coefficients. We introduce the irreducible character basis by defining it in terms of the induced trivial characters of the symmetric group which also form a basis of the symmetric functions. The irreducible character basis is closely related to character polynomials and we obtain some of the change of basis coefficients by making this connection explicit. Other change of basis coefficients come from a representation theoretic connection with the partition algebra, and still others are derived by developing combinatorial expressions. This document is an extended abstract which can be used as a review reference so that this basis can be implemented in Sage. A more complete version of the results in this abstract can be found in {\tt arXiv:1605.06672}.

Necessary conditions for the existence of 3-designs over finite fields with nontrivial automorphism groups
A q-design with parameters t-(v,k,lambda_t)_q is a pair (V, B) of the v-dimensional vector space V over GF(q) and a collection B of k-dimensional subspaces of V, such that each t-dimensional subspace of V is contained in precisely lambda_t members of B. In this paper we give new general necessary conditions on the existence of designs over finite fields with parameters 3-(v, k , lambda_3)_q with a prescribed automorphism group. These necessary conditions are based on a tactical decomposition of such a design over a finite field and are given in the form of equations for the coefficients of tactical decomposition matrices. In particular, they represent necessary conditions on the existence of q-analogues of Steiner systems admitting a prescribed automorphism group.

The automorphism group of the $s$-stable Kneser graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
For $k,s\geq2$, the $s$-stable Kneser graphs are the graphs with vertex set the $k$-subsets $S$ of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$ such that the circular distance between any two elements in $S$ is at least $s$ and two vertices are adjacent if and only if the corresponding $k$-subset are disjoint. Braun showed that for $n\geq 2k+1$ the automorphism group of the $2$-stable Kneser graphs (Schrijver graphs) is isomorphic to the dihedral group of order $2n$. In this paper we generalize this result by proving that for $s\geq 2$ and $n\geq sk+1$ the automorphism group of the $s$-stable Kneser graphs also is isomorphic to the dihedral group of order $2n$.
