A class of semiprimitive groups that are graph-restrictive
Published in Bull. Lond. Math. Soc., 46 (6) 1226-1236 (2015) • View PublicationBIB
We prove that an infinite family of semiprimitive groups are graph-restrictive. This adds to the evidence for the validity of the PSV Conjecture and increases the minimal imprimitive degree for which this conjecture is open to 12. Our result can be seen as a generalisation of the well-known theorem of Tutte on cubic graphs. The proof uses the amalgam method, adapted to this new situation.

On restricted edge-connectivity of half-transitive multigraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a multigraph (it has multiple edges, but no loops). The edge connectivity, denoted by $λ(G)$, is the cardinality of a minimum edge-cut of $G$. We call $G$ maximally edge-connected if $λ(G)=δ(G)$, and $G$ super edge-connected if every minimum edge-cut is a set of edges incident with some vertex. The restricted edge-connectivity $λ'(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum number of edges whose removal disconnects $G$ into non-trivial components. If $λ'(G)$ achieves the upper bound of restricted edge-connectivity, then $G$ is said to be $λ'$-optimal. A bipartite multigraph is said to be half-transitive if its automorphism group is transitive on the sets of its bipartition. In this paper, we will characterize maximally edge-connected half-transitive multigraphs, super edge-connected half-transitive multigraphs, and $λ'$-optimal half-transitive multigraphs.

Matching groups and gliding systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
With every matching in a graph we associate a group called the matching group. We study this group using the theory of non-positively curved cubed complexes. Our approach is formulated in terms of so-called gliding systems.

Two-sided Cayley graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a family of graphs that generalises the class of Cayley graphs. For non-empty subsets L, R of a group G, the two-sided Cayley graph 2SC(G;L,R) is the directed graph with vertex set G and an arc from x to y if and only if y=a^{-1}xb for some a in L and b in R. Thus, in common with Cayley graphs, two-sided Cayley graphs may be useful to model networks as the same routing and communication scheme can be implemented at each vertex. We determine when two-sided Cayley graphs are simple undirected graphs, and give sufficient conditions for them to be connected, vertex-transitive, or Cayley graphs. Several open problems are posed. Many examples are given, including one on 12 vertices with connected components of sizes 4 and 8.

Semiregular automorphisms of cubic vertex-transitive graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterise connected cubic graphs admitting a vertex- transitive group of automorphisms with an abelian normal subgroup that is not semiregular. We illustrate the utility of this result by using it to prove that the order of a semiregular subgroup of maximum order in a vertex-transitive group of automorphisms of a connected cubic graph grows with the order of the graph.

Descents of $λ$-unimodal cycles in a character formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove an identity conjectured by Adin and Roichman involving the descent set of $λ$-unimodal cyclic permutations. These permutations appear in formulas for characters of certain representations of the symmetric group. Such formulas have previously been proven algebraically. In this paper, we present a combinatorial proof for one such formula and discuss the consequences for the distribution of the descent set on cyclic permutations.

Normal Edge-Transitive Cayley Graphs of Frobenius Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
A Cayley Graph for a group $G$ is called normal edge-transitive if it admits an edge-transitive action of some subgroup of the Holomorph of $G$ (the normaliser of a regular copy of $G$ in $\operatorname{Sym}(G)$). We complete the classification of normal edge-transitive Cayley graphs of order a product of two primes by dealing with Cayley graphs for Frobenius groups of such orders. We determine the automorphism groups of these graphs, proving in particular that there is a unique vertex-primitive example, namely the flag graph of the Fano plane.

What is a horocyclic product, and how is it related to lamplighters?
Published in Internationale Mathematische Nachrichten (Austrian Math. Society) 224 (2013), 1-27 • Search Publication
This is a rather personal introductory outline of an interesting class of geometric, resp. graph- and group-theoretical structures. After an introductive section about their genesis, the general construction of horocyclic products is presented. Three closely related basic structures of this type are explained in more detail: Diestel-Leader graphs, treebolic spaces, and Sol-groups, resp. -manifolds. Emphasis is on their geometry, isometry groups, quasi-isometry classification and boundary at infinity. Subsequently, it is clarified under which parametrisation they admit discrete groups of isometries acting with compact quotient. Finally, further develpoments are reviewed briefly. Remark: the posted version contains a correction of a misprint that appeared on the bottom of page 22 in the version which appeared in IMN.

Primary Cyclic Matrices in Irreducible Matrix Subalgebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Primary Cyclic matrices were used (but not named) by Holt and Rees in their version of Parker's MEAT-AXE algorithm to test irreducibility of finite matrix groups and algebras. They are matrices $X$ with at least one cyclic component in the primary decomposition of the underlying vector space as an $X$-module. Let $\operatorname{M}(c,q^b)$ be an irreducible subalgebra of $\operatorname{M}(n,q)$, where $n=bc >c$. We prove a generalisation of the Kung-Stong Cycle Index, and use it to obtain a lower bound for the proportion of primary cyclic matrices in $\operatorname{M}(c,q^b)$. This extends work of Glasby and the second author on the case $b=1$.
A Corollary of Hamada and Ohmori's on Group Law over BIBD
In this note, we present an interesting corollary of a theorem of Hamada and Ohmori. We prove that the complementary of PG(n,2) is the only design, up to an isomorphism, whose blocks form a group for the symmetric difference.

Classes of Complete Simple Games that are All Weighted
Published • View PublicationBIB
Important decisions are likely made by groups of agents. Thus group decision making is very common in practice. Very transparent group aggregating rules are given by weighted voting, where each agent is assigned a weight. Here a proposal is accepted if the sum of the weights of the supporting agents meets or exceeds a given quota. We study a more general class of binary voting systems -- complete simple games -- and propose an algorithm to determine which sub classes, parameterized by the agent's type composition, are weighted.

The Milnor fibration of a hyperplane arrangement: from modular resonance to algebraic monodromy
Published in Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society 114 (2017), no. 6, 961-1004 • View PublicationBIB
A central question in arrangement theory is to determine whether the characteristic polynomial $Δ_q$ of the algebraic monodromy acting on the homology group $H_q(F(\mathcal{A}),\mathbb{C})$ of the Milnor fiber of a complex hyperplane arrangement $\mathcal{A}$ is determined by the intersection lattice $L(\mathcal{A})$. Under simple combinatorial conditions, we show that the multiplicities of the factors of $Δ_1$ corresponding to certain eigenvalues of order a power of a prime $p$ are equal to the Aomoto--Betti numbers $β_p(\mathcal{A})$, which in turn are extracted from $L(\mathcal{A})$. When $\mathcal{A}$ defines an arrangement of projective lines with only double and triple points, this leads to a combinatorial formula for the algebraic monodromy. To obtain these results, we relate nets on the underlying matroid of $\mathcal{A}$ to resonance varieties in positive characteristic. Using modular invariants of nets, we find a new realizability obstruction (over $\mathbb{C}$) for matroids, and we estimate the number of essential components in the first complex resonance variety of $\mathcal{A}$. Our approach also reveals a rather unexpected connection of modular resonance with the geometry of ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$-representation varieties, which are governed by the Maurer--Cartan equation.

Fully commutative elements of type D and homogeneous representations of KLR-algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we decompose the set of fully commutative elements into natural subsets when the Coxeter group is of type $D_n$, and study the combinatorics of these subsets, revealing hidden structures. (We do not consider type $A_n$ first, since a similar decomposition for type $A_n$ is trivial.) As an application, we classify and enumerate the homogeneous representations of the Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras of type $D_n$.

Kazhdan Lusztig and R polynomials of generalized Temperley Lieb algebras
We study two families of polynomials that play the same role, in the generalized Temperley Lieb algebra of a Coxeter group, as the Kazhdan Lusztig and R polynomials in the Hecke algebra of the group. Our results include recursions, closed formulas, and other combinatorial properties for these polynomials. We focus mainly on non branching Coxeter graphs.

Equivariant lattice generators and Markov bases
Published in Proc. ISSAC '14 (2014) 264-271 • View PublicationBIB
It has been shown recently that monomial maps in a large class respecting the action of the infinite symmetric group have, up to symmetry, finitely generated kernels. We study the simplest nontrivial family in this class: the maps given by a single monomial. Considering the corresponding lattice map, we explicitly construct an equivariant lattice generating set, whose width (the number of variables necessary to write it down) depends linearly on the width of the map. This result is sharp and improves dramatically the previously known upper bound as it does not depend on the degree of the image monomial. In the case of of width two, we construct an explicit finite set of binomials generating the toric ideal up to symmetry. Both width and degree of this generating set are sharply bounded by linear functions in the exponents of the monomial.

Element order versus minimal degree in permutation groups: an old lemma with new applications
In this note we present a simplified and slightly generalized version of a lemma the authors published in 1987. The lemma as stated here asserts that if the order of a permutation of $n$ elements is greater than $n^α$ then some non-identity power of the permutation has support size less than $n/α$. The original version made an unnecessary additional assumption on the cycle structure of the permutation; the proof of the present cleaner version follows the original proof verbatim. Application areas include parallel and sequential algorithms for permutation groups, the diameter of Cayley graphs of permutation groups, and the automorphisms of structures with regularity constraints such as Latin squares, Steiner 2-designs, and strongly regular graphs. This note also serves as a modest tribute to the junior author whose untimely passing is deeply mourned.

Normal zeta functions of the Heisenberg groups over number rings II -- the non-split case
Published • View PublicationBIB
We compute explicitly the normal zeta functions of the Heisenberg groups $H(R)$, where $R$ is a compact discrete valuation ring of characteristic zero. These zeta functions occur as Euler factors of normal zeta functions of Heisenberg groups of the form $H(\mathcal{O}_K)$, where $\mathcal{O}_K$ is the ring of integers of an arbitrary number field~$K$, at the rational primes which are non-split in~$K$. We show that these local zeta functions satisfy functional equations upon the inversion of the prime.

Normal zeta functions of the Heisenberg groups over number rings I - the unramified case
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $K$ be a number field with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_K$. We compute explicitly the local factors of the normal zeta functions of the Heisenberg groups $H(\mathcal{O}_K)$ that are indexed by rational primes which are unramified in $K$. We show that these local zeta functions satisfy functional equations upon the inversion of the prime.
The maximum cardinality of minimal inversion complete sets in finite reflection groups
Published in Journal of Algebra , 424 (2015), 330-356 • View PublicationBIB
We compute for reflection groups of type $A,B,D,F_4,H_3$ and for dihedral groups a statistic counting the maximal cardinality of a set of elements in the group whose generalized inversions yield the full set of inversions and which are minimal with respect to this property. We also provide lower bounds for the $E$ types that we conjecture to be the exact value of our statistic.

Rauzy fractals with countable fundamental group
Published in Journal of Fractal Geometry 1 (2014), no. 4, 427-447 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that every free group of finite rank can be realized as the fundamental group of a planar Rauzy fractal associated with a 4-letter unimodular cubic Pisot substitution. This characterizes all countable fundamental groups for planar Rauzy fractals. We give an explicit construction relying on two operations on substitutions: symbolic splittings and conjugations by free group automorphisms.
