We show that an element $w$ of a finite Weyl group $W$ is rationally smooth if and only if the hyperplane arrangement $I$ associated to the inversion set of $w$ is inductively free, and the product $(d_1+1) \cdots (d_l+1)$ of the coexponents $d_1,\ldots,d_l$ is equal to the size of the Bruhat interval $[e,w]$, where $e$ is the identity in $W$. As part of the proof, we describe exactly when a rationally smooth element in a finite Weyl group has a chain Billey-Postnikov decomposition. For finite Coxeter groups, we show that chain Billey-Postnikov decompositions are connected with certain modular coatoms of $I$.

Let $G$ be a permutation group acting on a finite set $Ω$ of cardinality $n$. The number of orbits of the induced action of $G$ on the set $Ω_m$ of all size $m$ subsets of $Ω$ satisfies the trivial inequalities $|Ω_m|/|G|\leq |Ω_m/G|\leq |Ω_m|$. The paper offers improvements of the upper bound in terms of the minimal degree of $G$ or the minimal degree of some its subset with a small complement. Applications include asymptotic enumeration of point configurations in an affine space over a finite field, unlabeled graphs and hypergraphs. Finally, with references to known results of permutation groups theory it is shown that if $G$ is an arbitrary 2-transitive group except for $S_n$ and $A_n$, then $|Ω_m/G|\approx |Ω_m|/|G|$ for $m$ and $n$ large provided the ratio $m/n$ is bounded away from 0 and 1.
Similar results hold for the induced action of $G$ on the set $Ω_{(m)}$ of all weight $m$ multisets on $Ω$ provided the ratio $m/n$ is not too small.
Double transitivity of Galois Groups in Schubert Calculus of Grassmannians

We investigate double transitivity of Galois groups in the classical Schubert calculus on Grassmannians. We show that all Schubert problems on Grassmannians of 2- and 3-planes have doubly transitive Galois groups, as do all Schubert problems involving only special Schubert conditions. We use these results to give a new proof that Schubert problems on Grassmannians of 2-planes have Galois groups that contain the alternating group. We also investigate the Galois group of every Schubert problem on Gr(4,8), finding that each Galois group either contains the alternating group or is an imprimitive permutation group and therefore fails to be doubly transitive. These imprimitive examples show that our results are the best possible general results on double transitivity of Schubert problems.

A vector species is a functor from the category of finite sets with bijections to vector spaces; informally, one can view this as a sequence of $S_n$-modules. A Hopf monoid (in the category of vector species) consists of a vector species with unit, counit, product, and coproduct morphisms satisfying several compatibility conditions, analogous to a graded Hopf algebra. We say that a Hopf monoid is strongly linearized if it has a "basis" preserved by its product and coproduct in a certain sense. We prove several equivalent characterizations of this property, and show that any strongly linearized Hopf monoid which is commutative and cocommutative possesses four bases which one can view as analogues of the classical bases of the algebra of symmetric functions. There are natural functors which turn Hopf monoids into graded Hopf algebras, and applying these functors to strongly linearized Hopf monoids produces several notable families of Hopf algebras. For example, in this way we give a simple unified construction of the Hopf algebras of superclass functions attached to the maximal unipotent subgroups of three families of classical Chevalley groups.

For a finite subgroup $G$ of the special unitary group $SU_2$, we study the centralizer algebra $Z_k(G) = End_G(V^{\otimes k})$ of $G$ acting on the $k$-fold tensor product of its defining representation $V= \mathbb{C}^2$. These subgroups are in bijection with the simply-laced affine Dynkin diagrams. The McKay correspondence relates the representation theory of these groups to the associated Dynkin diagram, and we use this connection to show that the structure and representation theory of $Z_k(G)$ as a semisimple algebra is controlled by the combinatorics of the corresponding Dynkin diagram.

We show that superreflexivity can be characterized in terms of bilipschitz embeddability of word hyperbolic groups. We compare characterizations of superreflexivity in terms of diamond graphs and binary trees. We show that there exist sequences of series-parallel graphs of increasing topological complexity which admit uniformly bilipschitz embeddings into a Hilbert space, and thus do not characterize superreflexivity.
Thickness, relative hyperbolicity, and randomness in Coxeter groups

For right-angled Coxeter groups $W_Γ$, we obtain a condition on $Γ$ that is necessary and sufficient to ensure that $W_Γ$ is thick and thus not relatively hyperbolic. We show that Coxeter groups which are not thick all admit canonical minimal relatively hyperbolic structures; further, we show that in such a structure, the peripheral subgroups are both parabolic (in the Coxeter group-theoretic sense) and strongly algebraically thick. We exhibit a polynomial-time algorithm that decides whether a right-angled Coxeter group is thick or relatively hyperbolic. We analyze random graphs in the Erdós-Rényi model and establish the asymptotic probability that a random right-angled Coxeter group is thick.
In the joint appendix we study Coxeter groups in full generality and there we also obtain a dichotomy whereby any such group is either strongly algebraically thick or admits a minimal relatively hyperbolic structure. In this study, we also introduce a notion we call \emph{intrinsic horosphericity} which provides a dynamical obstruction to relative hyperbolicity which generalizes thickness.
Structural Properties of the Cambrian Semilattices -- Consequences of Semidistributivity
The $γ$-Cambrian semilattices $\mathcal{C}_γ$ defined by Reading and Speyer are a family of meet-semilattices associated with a Coxeter group $W$ and a Coxeter element $γ\in W$, and they are lattices if and only if $W$ is finite. In the case where $W$ is the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$ and $γ$ is the long cycle $(1\;2\;\ldots\;n)$ the corresponding $γ$-Cambrian lattice is isomorphic to the well-known Tamari lattice $\mathcal{T}_{n}$. Recently, Kallipoliti and the author have investigated $\mathcal{C}_γ$ from a topological viewpoint, and showed that many properties of the Tamari lattices can be generalized nicely. In the present article this investigation is continued on a structural level using the observation of Reading and Speyer that $\mathcal{C}_γ$ is semidistributive. First we prove that every closed interval of $\mathcal{C}_γ$ is a bounded-homomorphic image of a free lattice (in fact it is a so-called $\mathcal{H\!H}$-lattice). Subsequently we prove that each closed interval of $\mathcal{C}_γ$ is trim, we determine its breadth, and we characterize the closed intervals that are dismantlable.

We show that a finitely generated subgroup of a free group, chosen uniformly at random, is strictly Whitehead minimal with overwhelming probability. Whitehead minimality is one of the key elements of the solution of the orbit problem in free groups. The proofs strongly rely on combinatorial tools, notably those of analytic combinatorics. The result we prove actually depends implicitly on the choice of a distribution on finitely generated subgroups, and we establish it for the two distributions which appear in the literature on random subgroups.

The Chen groups of a group $G$ are the lower central series quotients of the maximal metabelian quotient of $G$. Under certain conditions, we relate the ranks of the Chen groups to the first resonance variety of $G$, a jump locus for the cohomology of $G$. In the case where $G$ is the fundamental group of the complement of a complex hyperplane arrangement, our results positively resolve Suciu's Chen ranks conjecture. We obtain explicit formulas for the Chen ranks of a number of groups of broad interest, including pure Artin groups associated to Coxeter groups, and the group of basis-conjugating automorphisms of a finitely generated free group.
Graph Automorphisms from the Geometric Viewpoint
An automorphism of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a bijective map $φ$ from $V$ to itself such that $φ(v_i)φ(v_j)\in E$ $\Leftrightarrow$ $v_i v_j\in E$ for any two vertices $v_i$ and $v_j$. Denote by $\mathfrak{G}$ the group consisting of all automorphisms of $G$. Apparently, an automorphism of $G$ can be regarded as a permutation on $[n]=\{1,\ldots,n\}$, provided that $G$ has $n$ vertices. For each permutation $σ$ on $[n]$, there is a natural action on any given vector $\boldsymbol{u}=(u_1,\ldots,u_n)^t\in \mathbb{C}^n$ such that $σ\boldsymbol{u}=(u_{σ^{-1}1},u_{σ^{-1}2},\ldots,u_{σ^{-1} n})^t$, so $σ$ can be viewed as a linear operator on $\mathbb{C}^n$. Accordingly, one can formulate a characterization to the automorphisms of $G$, {\it i.e.,} $σ$ is an automorphism of $G$ if and only if every eigenspace of $\mathbf{A}(G)$ is $σ$-invariant, where $\mathbf{A}(G)$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$. Consequently, every eigenspace of $\mathbf{A}(G)$ is $\mathfrak{G}$-invariant, which is equivalent to that for any eigenvector $\boldsymbol{v}$ of $\mathbf{A}(G)$ corresponding to the eigenvalue $λ$, $\mathrm{span}(\mathfrak{G}\boldsymbol{v})$ is a subspace of the eigenspace $V_λ$. By virtue of the linear representation of the automorphism group $\mathfrak{G}$, we characterize those extremal vectors $\boldsymbol{v}$ in an eigenspace of $\mathbf{A}(G)$ so that $\mathrm{dim}~\mathrm{span}(\mathfrak{G}\boldsymbol{v})$ can attain extremal values, and furthermore, we determine the exact value of $\mathrm{dim}~\mathrm{span}(\mathfrak{G}\boldsymbol{v})$ for any eigenvector $\boldsymbol{v}$ of $\mathbf{A}(G)$.
A Class of Kazhdan-Lusztig R-Polynomials and q-Fibonacci Numbers
Let $S_n$ denote the symmetric group on $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. For two permutations $u, v\in S_n$ such that $u\leq v$ in the Bruhat order, let $R_{u,v}(q)$ and $\R_{u,v}(q)$ denote the Kazhdan-Lusztig $R$-polynomial and $\R$-polynomial, respectively. Let $v_n=34\cdots n\, 12$, and let $σ$ be a permutation such that $σ\leq v_n$. We obtain a formula for the $\R$-polynomials $\R_{σ,v_n}(q)$ in terms of the $q$-Fibonacci numbers depending on a parameter determined by the reduced expression of $σ$. When $σ$ is the identity $e$, this reduces to a formula obtained by Pagliacci. In another direction, we obtain a formula for the $\R$-polynomial $\R_{e,\,v_{n,i}}(q)$, where $v_{n,i} = 3 4\cdots i\,n\, (i+1)\cdots (n-1)\, 12$. In a more general context, we conjecture that for any two permutations $σ,τ\in S_n$ such that $σ\leq τ\leq v_n$, the $\R$-polynomial $\R_{σ,τ}(q)$ can be expressed as a product of $q$-Fibonacci numbers multiplied by a power of $q$.
A Stability Result for Sparse Convolutions
We will establish in this note a stability result for sparse convolutions on torsion-free additive (discrete) abelian groups. Sparse convolutions on torsion-free groups are free of cancellations and hence admit stability, i.e. injectivity with a universal lower bound $α=α(s,f)$, only depending on the cardinality $s$ and $f$ of the supports of both input sequences. More precisely, we show that $α$ depends only on $s$ and $f$ and not on the ambient dimension. This statement follows from a reduction argument which involves a compression into a small set preserving the additive structure of the supports.

We determine the critical groups of the generalized de Bruijn graphs DB$(n,d)$ and generalized Kautz graphs Kautz$(n,d)$, thus extending and completing earlier results for the classical de Bruijn and Kautz graphs. Moreover, for a prime $p$ the critical groups of DB$(n,p)$ are shown to be in close correspondence with groups of $n\times n$ circulant matrices over $\mathbb{F}_p$, which explains numerical data in [OEIS:A027362], and suggests the possibility to construct normal bases in $\mathbb{F}_{p^n}$ from spanning trees in DB$(n,p)$.

We give a vanishing theorem for the monodromy eigenspaces of the Milnor fibers of complex line arrangements. By applying the modular bound of the local system cohomology groups given by Papadima-Suciu, the result is deduced from the vanishing of the cohomology of certain Aomoto complex over finite fields. In order to prove this, we introduce degeneration homomorphisms of Orlik-Solomon algebras.

For each composition $\vec{c}$ we show that the order complex of the poset of pointed set partitions $Π^{\bullet}_{\vec{c}}$ is a wedge of spheres of the same dimension with the multiplicity given by the number of permutations with descent composition $\vec{c}$. Furthermore, the action of the symmetric group on the top homology is isomorphic to the Specht module $S^{B}$ where $B$ is a border strip associated to the composition. We also study the filter of pointed set partitions generated by a knapsack integer partition and show the analogous results on homotopy type and action on the top homology.
Symmetry-forced rigidity of frameworks on surfaces

A fundamental theorem of Laman characterises when a bar-joint framework realised generically in the Euclidean plane admits a non-trivial continuous deformation of its vertices. This has recently been extended in two ways. Firstly to frameworks that are symmetric with respect to some point group but are otherwise generic, and secondly to frameworks in Euclidean 3-space that are constrained to lie on 2-dimensional algebraic varieties.
We combine these two settings and consider the rigidity of symmetric frameworks realised on such surfaces. By extending the orbit matrix techniques of [32, 12], we prove necessary conditions for a framework to be symmetry-forced rigid (i.e., to have no non-trivial symmetry-preserving motion) for any group and any surface. In the cases when the surface is a sphere, a cylinder or a cone we use Henneberg-type inductive constructions on group-labeled quotient graphs to prove that these conditions are also sufficient for a number of symmetry groups, including rotation, reflection, inversion and dihedral symmetry. For the remaining groups - as well as for other types of surfaces - we provide some observations and conjectures.

Using Goursat's lemma for groups, a simple representation and the invariant factor decompositions of the subgroups of the group Z_m x Z_n are deduced, where m and n are arbitrary positive integers. As consequences, explicit formulas for the total number of subgroups, the number of subgroups with a given invariant factor decomposition, and the number of subgroups of a given order are obtained.
