Determinantal probability measures
Published in Publ. Math. Inst. HauteÉtudes Sci. 98 (2003), 167-212. • View PublicationBIB
Determinantal point processes have arisen in diverse settings in recent years and have been investigated intensively. We study basic combinatorial and probabilistic aspects in the discrete case. Our main results concern relationships with matroids, stochastic domination, negative association, completeness for infinite matroids, tail triviality, and a method for extension of results from orthogonal projections to positive contractions. We also present several new avenues for further investigation, involving Hilbert spaces, combinatorics, homology, and group representations, among other areas.

On the number of facets of three-dimensional Dirichlet stereohedra II: Non-cubic Groups
Published in Contributions to Algebra and Geometry, Vol. 47, No. 1, pp. 89-120 (2006) • Search Publication
We prove that Dirichlet stereohedra for non-cubic crystallographic groups in dimension 3 cannot have more than 80 facets. The bound depends on the particular crystallographic group considered and is above 50 only on 9 of the 97 affine conjugacy classes of them. We also construct Dirichlet stereohedra with 32 and 29 facets for a hexagonal and a tetragonal group, respectively.

The Homology of the real moduli spaces \bar(M)_(0,n)
We compute the rank of the first homology group and we study the higher Betti numbers of the real points of the Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen compactification of stable n-pointed curves of genus 0,which coincides with the Chow quotient (RP^1)^n//PGL(2,R)(after Kapranov).

Structure of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations
Published in Adv. Math., 191 (2005), no. 2, 225--275 • View PublicationBIB
We analyze the structure of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations in detail. We give explicit formulas for its antipode, prove that it is a cofree coalgebra, determine its primitive elements and its coradical filtration, and show that it decomposes as a crossed product over the Hopf algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. In addition, we describe the structure constants of the multiplication as a certain number of facets of the permutahedron. As a consequence we obtain a new interpretation of the product of monomial quasi-symmetric functions in terms of the facial structure of the cube. The Hopf algebra of Malvenuto and Reutenauer has a linear basis indexed by permutations. Our results are obtained from a combinatorial description of the Hopf algebraic structure with respect to a new basis for this algebra, related to the original one via Möbius inversion on the weak order on the symmetric groups. This is in analogy with the relationship between the monomial and fundamental bases of the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions. Our results reveal a close relationship between the structure of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra and the weak order on the symmetric groups.

Tropical Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence and birational Weyl group actions
Published • View PublicationBIB
By using an elementary matrix approach, based on the technique of discrete Toda equation, we construct subtraction-free rational and piecewise linear transformations associated with various combinatorial algorithms, including the RSK correspondence. We also investigate birational Weyl group actions related to those algorithms.

Structure of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations (Extended Abstract)

Combinatorics and Topology of partitions of spherical measures by 2 and 3 fans
An arrangement of k-semilines in the Euclidean (projective) plane or on the 2-sphere is called a k-fan if all semilines start from the same point. A k-fan is an $α$-partition for a probability measure $μ$ if $μ(σ_i)=α_i$ for each $i=1,...,k$ where $\{σ_i\}_{i=1}^k$ are conical sectors associated with the k-fan and $α= (α_1,... ,α_k)$. The set of all $α= (α_1,... ,α_m)$ such that for any collection of probability measures $μ_1,... ,μ_m$ there exists a common $α$-partition by a k-fan is denoted by ${\cal A}_{m,k}$. We prove, as a central result of this paper, that ${\cal A}_{3,2} = \{(s,t)\in \mathbb{R}^2\mid s+t=1 {\rm and} s,t>0\}$. The result follows from the fact that under mild conditions there does not exist a $Q_{4n}$-equivariant map $f : S^3\to V\setminus {\cal A}(α)$ where ${\cal A}(α)$ is a $Q_{4n}$-invariant, linear subspace arrangement in a $Q_{4n}$-representation V, where $Q_{4n}$ is the generalized quaternion group. This fact is established by showing that an appropriate obstruction in the group $Ω_1(Q_{4n})$ of $Q_{4n}$-bordisms does not vanish.

Lower bounds for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials from patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a lower bound for the value at q=1 of a Kazhdan-Lustig polynomial in a Weyl group W in terms of "patterns''. This is expressed by a "pattern map" from W to W' for any parabloic subgroup W'. This notion generalizes the concept of patterns and pattern avoidance for permutations to all Weyl groups. The main tool of the proof is a "hyperbolic localization" on intersection cohomology; see the related paper http://front.math.ucdavis.edu/math.AG/0202251

The centralizer of two numbers under the natural action of $S_k$ on [k], the maximal parabolic subgroup of $S_k$, and generalized patterns
A natural generalization of single pattern avoidance is subset avoidance. A complete study of subset avoidance for the case k=3 is carried out in [SS]. For k>3 situation becomes more complicated, as the number of possible cases grows rapidly. Recently, several authors have considered the case of general k when T has some nice algebraic properties. Barcucci, Del Lungo, Pergola, and Pinzani in [BDPP) treated the case when $T=T_1$ is the centralizer of k-1 and k under the natural action of $S_k$ on [k]. Mansour and Vainshtein in [MVp] treated the case when $T=T_2$ is maximal parabolic group of $S_k$. Recently, Babson and Steingrimsson (see [BS]) introduced generalized permutations patterns that allow the requirement that two adjacent letters in a pattern must be adjacent in the permutation. In this paper we present an analogue with generalization for the case $T_1$ and for the case $T_2$ by using generalized patterns instead of classical patterns.

Skew Schubert polynomials
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc., 131 (2003), 3319-3328. • View PublicationBIB
We define skew Schubert polynomials to be normal form (polynomial) representatives of certain classes in the cohomology of a flag manifold. We show that this definition extends a recent construction of Schubert polynomials due to Bergeron and Sottile in terms of certain increasing labeled chains in Bruhat order of the symmetric group. These skew Schubert polynomials expand in the basis of Schubert polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients that are precisely the structure constants of the cohomology of the complex flag variety with respect to its basis of Schubert classes. We rederive the construction of Bergeron and Sottile in a purely combinatorial way, relating it to the construction of Schubert polynomials in terms of rc-graphs.

Colimits, Stanley-Reisner algebras, and loop spaces
Published in Categorical decomposition techniques in algebraic topology (Isle of Skye, 2001). Progress in Math. 215. Birkhäuser, Basel, 2004, pp. 261-291 • View PublicationBIB
We study diagrams associated with a finite simplicial complex K, in various algebraic and topological categories. We relate their colimits to familiar structures in algebra, combinatorics, geometry and topology. These include: right-angled Artin and Coxeter groups (and their complex analogues, which we call circulation groups); Stanley-Reisner algebras and coalgebras; Davis and Januszkiewicz's spaces DJ(K) associated with toric manifolds and their generalisations; and coordinate subspace arrangements. When K is a flag complex, we extend well-known results on Artin and Coxeter groups by confirming that the relevant circulation group is homotopy equivalent to the space of loops $ΩDJ(K)$. We define homotopy colimits for diagrams of topological monoids and topological groups, and show they commute with the formation of classifying spaces in a suitably generalised sense. We deduce that the homotopy colimit of the appropriate diagram of topological groups is a model for $ΩDJ(K)$ for an arbitrary complex K, and that the natural projection onto the original colimit is a homotopy equivalence when K is flag. In this case, the two models are compatible.

Equivariant Euler characteristics of discriminants of reflection groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a finite, complex reflection group and f its discriminant polynomial. The fibers of f admit commuting actions of G and a cyclic group. The virtual $G\times C_m$ character given by the Euler characteristic of the fiber is a refinement of the zeta function of the geometric monodromy, calculated in a paper of Denef and Loeser. We compute the virtual character explicitly, in terms of the poset of normalizers of centralizers of regular elements of G, and of the subspace arrangement given by proper eigenspaces of elements of G. As a consequence, we compute orbifold Euler characteristics and find some new "case-free" information about the discriminant.

Bruhat order for two flags and a line
Published • View PublicationBIB
The classical Ehresmann-Bruhat order describes the possible degenerations of a pair of flags in a linear space V under linear transformations of V; or equivalently, it describes the closure of an orbit of GL(V) acting diagonally on the product of two flag varieties. We consider the degenerations of a triple consisting of two flags and a line, or equivalently the closure of an orbit of GL(V) acting diagonally on the product of two flag varieties and a projective space. We give a simple rank criterion to decide whether one triple can degenerate to another. We also classify the minimal degenerations, which involve not only reflections (i.e., transpositions) in the Weyl group S_n, n=dim(V), but also cycles of arbitrary length. Our proofs use only elementary linear algebra and combinatorics.

Estimating Maximum by Moments for Functions on Orbits
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a compact group acting in a real vector space V. We obtain a number of inequalities relating the L^infinity norm of a matrix element of the representation of G with its L^p norm for p<infinity. We apply our results to obtain approximation algorithms to find the maximum absolute value of a given multivariate polynomial over the unit sphere (in which case G is the orthogonal group) and for the multidimensional assignment problem, a hard problem of combinatorial optimization (in which case G is the symmetric group).

Rim Hook Tableaux and Kostant's $η$-Function Coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using a 0/1 encoding of Young diagrams and its consequences for rim hook tableaux, we prove a reduction formula of Littlewood for arbitrary characters of the symmetric group, evaluated at elements with all cycle lengths divisible by a given integer. As an application, we find explicitly the coefficients in a formula of Kostant for certain powers of the Dedekind $η$-function, avoiding most of the original machinery.

On multiplicities of points on Schubert varieties in Graszmannians II
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 22 (2005), 273-288. • View PublicationBIB
We prove a conjecture by Kreiman and Lakshmibai on a combinatorial description of multiplicities of points on Schubert varieties in Graszmannians in terms of certain sets of reflections in the corresponding Weyl group. The proof is accomplished by setting up a bijection between these sets of reflections and the author's previous combinatorial interpretation of these multiplicities in terms of nonintersecting lattice paths (Séminaire Lotharingien Combin. 45 (2001), Article B45c; see http://www.mat.univie.ac.at/~slc/wpapers/s45kratt.html or http://www.arxiv.org/abs/math.AG/0011129).

On Filamentations and Virtual Knots
Published in Topology and its Applications. 134 (2003), 23-52. • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we discuss filamentations on oriented chord diagrams. When a filamentation cannot be realized on an oriented chord diagram, then the corresponding flat virtual knot is non-trivial. If a flat knot diagram is non-trivial, then any virtual diagram whose shadow is the flat diagram must also be non-trivial. We introduce a class of flat diagrams for which no filamentations exist. This class gives the first example of an infinite set of virtual knots for which the Jones polynomial and the fundamental group both evaluate trivially. The related generalized Alexander polynomials for the virtual knots in this class turn out to be distinct, proving that the class is indeed infinite.

Permutation group algebras
Published in J. Alg. Combinatorics, 19 (2004), pp. 25--45 • Search Publication
We consider the permutation group algebra defined by Cameron and show that if the permutation group has no finite orbits, then no homogeneous element of degree one is a zero-divisor of the algebra. We proceed to make a conjecture which would show that the algebra is an integral domain if, in addition, the group is oligomorphic. We go on to show that this conjecture is true in certain special cases, including those of the form H Wr S and H Wr A, and show that in the oligormorphic case, the algebras corresponding to these special groups are polynomial algebras. In the H Wr A case, the algebra is related to the shuffle algebra of free Lie algebra theory. We finish by considering some integer sequences which arise from certain of these groups.

Cactus Trees, and Estimations of the Spectral Radius of Vertex-Transitive Graphs
Published in Random walks and geometry, 349--361, Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co. KG, Berlin, 2004 • View PublicationBIB
This paper gives lower bounds on the spectral radius of vertex-transitive graphs, based on the number of ``prime cycles'' at a vertex. The bounds are obtained by constructing circuits in the graph that resemble ``cactus trees'', and enumerating them. Counting these circuits gives a coefficient-wise underestimation of the Green function of the graph, and hence and underestimation of its spectral radius. The bounds obtained are very good for the Cayley graph of surface groups of genus g>=2, with standard generators (these graphs are the 1-skeletons of tessellations of hyperbolic plane by 4g-gons, 4g per vertex). We have for example for g=2 0.662420<=|M|<=0.662816, and for g=3 0.552773<=|M|<=0.552792.
