Semi-pointed partition posets and Species
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define semi-pointed partition posets, which are a generalisation of partition posets and show that they are Cohen-Macaulay. We then use multichains to compute the dimension and the character for the action of the symmetric groups on their homology. We finally study the associated incidence Hopf algebra, which is similar to the Fa{à} di Bruno Hopf algebra.

Brick polytopes, lattice quotients, and Hopf algebras
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 155:418-457, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
This paper is motivated by the interplay between the Tamari lattice, J.-L. Loday's realization of the associahedron, and J.-L. Loday and M. Ronco's Hopf algebra on binary trees. We show that these constructions extend in the world of acyclic $k$-triangulations, which were already considered as the vertices of V. Pilaud and F. Santos' brick polytopes. We describe combinatorially a natural surjection from the permutations to the acyclic $k$-triangulations. We show that the fibers of this surjection are the classes of the congruence $\equiv^k$ on $\mathfrak{S}_n$ defined as the transitive closure of the rewriting rule $U ac V_1 b_1 \cdots V_k b_k W \equiv^k U ca V_1 b_1 \cdots V_k b_k W$ for letters $a < b_1, \dots, b_k < c$ and words $U, V_1, \dots, V_k, W$ on $[n]$. We then show that the increasing flip order on $k$-triangulations is the lattice quotient of the weak order by this congruence. Moreover, we use this surjection to define a Hopf subalgebra of C. Malvenuto and C. Reutenauer's Hopf algebra on permutations, indexed by acyclic $k$-triangulations, and to describe the product and coproduct in this algebra and its dual in term of combinatorial operations on acyclic $k$-triangulations. Finally, we extend our results in three directions, describing a Cambrian, a tuple, and a Schröder version of these constructions.

The mod 2 dual Steenrod algebra as a subalgebra of the mod 2 dual Leibniz-Hopf algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
The mod 2 Steenrod algebra $\mathcal{A}_2$ can be defined as the quotient of the mod 2 Leibniz--Hopf algebra $\mathcal{F}_2$ by the Adem relations. Dually, the mod 2 dual Steenrod algebra $\mathcal{A}_2^*$ can be thought of as a sub-Hopf algebra of the mod 2 dual Leibniz--Hopf algebra $\mathcal{F}_2^*$. We study $\mathcal{A}_2^*$ and $\mathcal{F}_2^*$ from this viewpoint and give generalisations of some classical results in the literature.

Combinatorial Hopf Algebras of Simplicial Complexes
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math. 30 (2016), no. 3, 1737--1757 • View PublicationBIB
We consider a Hopf algebra of simplicial complexes and provide a cancellation-free formula for its antipode. We then obtain a family of combinatorial Hopf algebras by defining a family of characters on this Hopf algebra. The characters of these combinatorial Hopf algebras give rise to symmetric functions that encode information about colorings of simplicial complexes and their $f$-vectors. We also use characters to give a generalization of Stanley's $(-1)$-color theorem. A $q$-analog version of this family of characters is also studied.

Free quadri-algebras and dual quadri-algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study quadri-algebras and dual quadri-algebras. We describe the free quadri-algebra on one generator as a subobject of the Hopf algebra of permutations FQSym, proving a conjecture due to Aguiar and Loday, using that the operad of quadri-algebras can be obtained from the operad of dendriform algebras by both black and white Manin products. We also give a combinatorial description of free dual quadri-algebras. A notion of quadri-bialgebra is also introduced, with applications to the Hopf algebras FQSym and WQSym.

A divisibility result on combinatorics of generalized braids
Published • View PublicationBIB
For every finite Coxeter group $Γ$, each positive braids in the corresponding braid group admits a unique decomposition as a finite sequence of elements of $Γ$, the so-called Garside-normal form. The study of the associated adjacency matrix $Adj(Γ)$ allows to count the number of Garside-normal form of a given length. In this paper we prove that the characteristic polynomial of $Adj(B_n)$ divides the one of $Adj(B_{n+1})$. The key point is the use of a Hopf algebra based on signed permutations. A similar result was already known for the type $A$. We observe that this does not hold for type $D$. The other Coxeter types ($I$, $E$, $F$ and $H$) are also studied.

The monomial basis and the $Q$-basis of the Hopf algebra of parking functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider the vector space $\mathbb{K}\mathcal{P}$ spanned by parking functions. By representing parking functions as labeled digraphs, Hivert, Novelli and Thibon constructed a cocommutative Hopf algebra PQSym$^{*}$ on $\mathbb{K}\mathcal{P}$. The product and coproduct of PQSym$^{*}$ are analogous to the product and coproduct of the Hopf algebra NCSym of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables defined in terms of the power sum basis. In this paper, we view a parking function as a word. We shall construct a Hopf algebra PFSym on $\mathbb{K}\mathcal{P}$ with a formal basis $\{M_a\}$ analogous to the monomial basis of NCSym. By introducing a partial order on parking functions, we transform the basis $\{M_a\}$ to another basis $\{Q_a\}$ via the Möbius inversion. We prove the freeness of PFSym by finding two free generating sets in terms of the $M$-basis and the $Q$-basis, and we show that PFSym is isomorphic to the Hopf algebra PQSym$^{*}$. It turns out that our construction, when restricted to permutations and non-increasing parking functions, leads to a new way to approach the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebras of ordered trees and heap-ordered trees.

Card-Shuffling via Convolutions of Projections on Combinatorial Hopf Algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Diaconis, Ram and I created Markov chains out of the coproduct-then-product operator on combinatorial Hopf algebras. These chains model the breaking and recombining of combinatorial objects. Our motivating example was the riffle-shuffling of a deck of cards, for which this Hopf algebra connection allowed explicit computation of all the eigenfunctions. The present note replaces in this construction the coproduct-then-product map with convolutions of projections to the graded subspaces, effectively allowing us to dictate the distribution of sizes of the pieces in the breaking step of the previous chains. An important example is removing one "vertex" and reattaching it, in analogy with top-to-random shuffling. This larger family of Markov chains all admit analysis by Hopf-algebraic techniques. There are simple combinatorial expressions for their stationary distributions and for their eigenvalues and multiplicities and, in some cases, the eigenfunctions are also calculable.

The Hopf algebra of finite topologies and mould composition
Published • View PublicationBIB
We exhibit an internal coproduct on the Hopf algebra of finite topologies recently defined by the second author, C. Malvenuto and F. Patras, dual to the composition of "quasi-ormoulds", which are the natural version of J. Ecalle's moulds in this setting. All these results are displayed in the linear species formalism.

Hopf Algebras and Topological Recursion
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a model for topological recursion based on the Hopf Algebra of planar binary trees of Loday and Ronco. We show that extending this Hopf Algebra by identifying pairs of nearest neighbor leaves and producing in this way graphs with loops we obtain the full recursion formula of Eynard and Orantin.

The splitting process in free probability theory
Published in Int Math Res Notices (2016) 2016 (9): 2647-2676 • View PublicationBIB
Free cumulants were introduced by Speicher as a proper analog of classical cumulants in Voiculescu's theory of free probability. The relation between free moments and free cumulants is usually described in terms of Moebius calculus over the lattice of non-crossing partitions. In this work we explore another approach to free cumulants and to their combinatorial study using a combinatorial Hopf algebra structure on the linear span of non-crossing partitions. The generating series of free moments is seen as a character on this Hopf algebra. It is characterized by solving a linear fixed point equation that relates it to the generating series of free cumulants. These phenomena are explained through a process similar to (though different from) the arborification process familiar in the theory of dynamical systems, and originating in Cayley's work.

Antipode formulas for some combinatorial Hopf algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by work of Buch on set-valued tableaux in relation to the K-theory of the Grassmannian, Lam and Pylyavskyy studied six combinatorial Hopf algebras that can be thought of as K-theoretic analogues of the Hopf algebras of symmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions, and of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. They described the bialgebra structure in all cases that were not yet known but left open the question of finding explicit formulas for the antipode maps. We give combinatorial formulas for the antipode map for the K-theoretic analogues of the symmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, and noncommutative symmetric functions.

Hopf Algebras and Markov Chains
This thesis introduces a way to build Markov chains out of Hopf algebras. The transition matrix of a "Hopf-power Markov chain" is (the transpose of) the matrix of the coproduct-then-product operator on a combinatorial Hopf algebra with respect to a suitable basis. These chains describe the breaking-then-recombining of the combinatorial objects in the Hopf algebra. The motivating example is the famous Gilbert-Shannon-Reeds model of riffle-shuffling of a deck of cards, which arises in this manner from the shuffle algebra. The primary reason for constructing Hopf-power Markov chains, or for rephrasing familiar chains through this lens, is that much information about them comes simply from translating well-known facts on the underlying Hopf algebra. For example, there is an explicit formula for the stationary distribution (Theorem 4.5.1), and constructing quotient algebras show that certain statistics on a Hopf-power Markov chain are themselves Markov chains (Theorem 4.7.1). Perhaps the pinnacle is Theorem 2.5.1, a collection of algorithms for a full left and right eigenbasis in many common cases where the underlying Hopf algebra is commutative or cocommutative. This arises from a cocktail of the Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt theorem, the Cartier-Milnor-Moore theorem, Reutenauer's structure theory of the free Lie algebra, and Patras's Eulerian idempotent theory. Since Hopf-power Markov chains can exhibit very different behaviour depending on the structure of the underlying Hopf algebra and its distinguished basis, one must restrict attention to certain styles of Hopf algebras in order to obtain stronger results. This thesis will focus respectively on a free-commutative basis, which produces "independent breaking" chains, and a cofree basis; there will be both general statements and in-depth examples.

Cambrian Hopf Algebras
Published in Adv. Math., 311:598-633, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
Cambrian trees are oriented and labeled trees which fulfill local conditions around each node generalizing the conditions for classical binary search trees. Based on the bijective correspondence between signed permutations and leveled Cambrian trees, we define the Cambrian Hopf algebra generalizing J.-L. Loday and M. Ronco's algebra on binary trees. We describe combinatorially the products and coproducts of both the Cambrian algebra and its dual in terms of operations on Cambrian trees. We also define multiplicative bases of the Cambrian algebra and study structural and combinatorial properties of their indecomposable elements. Finally, we extend to the Cambrian setting different algebras connected to binary trees, in particular S. Law and N. Reading's Baxter Hopf algebra on quadrangulations and S. Giraudo's equivalent Hopf algebra on twin binary trees, and F. Chapoton's Hopf algebra on all faces of the associahedron.

Perturbative renormalisation for not-quite-connected bialgebras
Published in Lett. Math. Phys. 105 (2015), 1413--1425 • View PublicationBIB
We observe that the Connes--Kreimer Hopf-algebraic approach to perturbative renormalisation works not just for Hopf algebras but more generally for filtered bialgebras $B$ with the property that $B_0$ is spanned by group-like elements (e.g. pointed bialgebras with the coradical filtration). Such bialgebras occur naturally both in Quantum Field Theory, where they have some attractive features, and elsewhere in Combinatorics, where they cover a comprehensive class of incidence bialgebras. In particular, the setting allows us to interpret Möbius inversion as an instance of renormalisation.

SISO Output Affine Feedback Transformation Group and Its Faa di Bruno Hopf Algebra
Published in SIAM J. Control Optim. 55-2 (2017), pp. 885-912 • View PublicationBIB
The general goal of this paper is to identify a transformation group that can be used to describe a class of feedback interconnections involving subsystems which are modeled solely in terms of Chen-Fliess functional expansions or Fliess operators and are independent of the existence of any state space models. This interconnection, called an output affine feedback connection, is distinguished from conventional output feedback by the presence of a multiplier in an outer loop. Once this transformation group is established, three basic questions are addressed. How can this transformation group be used to provide an explicit Fliess operator representation of such a closed-loop system? Is it possible to use this feedback scheme to do system inversion purely in an input-output setting? In particular, can feedback input-output linearization be posed and solved entirely in this framework, i.e., without the need for any state space realization? Lastly, what can be said about feedback invariants under this transformation group? A final objective of the paper is to describe the Lie algebra of infinitesimal characters associated with the group in terms of a pre-Lie product.

Dual Filtered Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define a K-theoretic analogue of Fomin's dual graded graphs, which we call dual filtered graphs. The key formula in the definition is DU-UD= D + I. Our major examples are K-theoretic analogues of Young's lattice, of shifted Young's lattice, and of the Young-Fibonacci lattice. We suggest notions of tableaux, insertion algorithms, and growth rules whenever such objects are not already present in the literature. We also provide a large number of other examples. Most of our examples arise via two constructions, which we call the Pieri construction and the Mobius construction. The Pieri construction is closely related to the construction of dual graded graphs from a graded Hopf algebra, as described by Bergeron-Lam-Li, Nzeutchap, and Lam-Shimizono. The Mobius construction is more mysterious but also potentially more important, as it corresponds to natural insertion algorithms.

Antipodes and involutions
Published • View PublicationBIB
If H is a connected, graded Hopf algebra, then Takeuchi's formula can be used to compute its antipode. However, there is usually massive cancellation in the result. We show how sign-reversing involutions can sometimes be used to obtain cancellation-free formulas. We apply this idea to nine different examples. We rederive known formulas for the antipodes in the Hopf algebra of polynomials, the shuffle Hopf algebra, the Hopf algebra of quasisymmertic functions in both the monomial and fundamental bases, the Hopf algebra of multi-quasisymmetric functions in the fundamental basis, and the incidence Hopf algebra of graphs. We also find cancellation-free expressions for particular values of the antipode in the immaculate basis for the noncommutative symmetric functions as well as the Malvenuto-Reutenauer and Porier-Reutenauer Hopf algebras, some of which are the first of their kind. We include various conjectures and suggestions for future research.

Dual immaculate creation operators and a dendriform algebra structure on the quasisymmetric functions
Published in Canad. J. Math. 69(2017), 21-53 (published version is version 5 without ancillary file) • View PublicationBIB
The dual immaculate functions are a basis of the ring QSym of quasisymmetric functions, and form one of the most natural analogues of the Schur functions. The dual immaculate function corresponding to a composition is a weighted generating function for immaculate tableaux in the same way as a Schur function is for semistandard Young tableaux; an "immaculate tableau" is defined similarly to a semistandard Young tableau, but the shape is a composition rather than a partition, and only the first column is required to strictly increase (whereas the other columns can be arbitrary; but each row has to weakly increase). Dual immaculate functions have been introduced by Berg, Bergeron, Saliola, Serrano and Zabrocki in arXiv:1208.5191, and have since been found to possess numerous nontrivial properties. In this note, we prove a conjecture of Mike Zabrocki which provides an alternative construction for the dual immaculate functions in terms of certain "vertex operators". The proof uses a dendriform structure on the ring QSym; we discuss the relation of this structure to known dendriform structures on the combinatorial Hopf algebras FQSym and WQSym.

Hopf Algebras in Combinatorics
These notes -- originating from a one-semester class by their second author at the University of Minnesota -- survey some of the most important Hopf algebras appearing in combinatorics. After introducing coalgebras, bialgebras and Hopf algebras in general, we study the Hopf algebra of symmetric functions, including Zelevinsky's axiomatic characterization of it as a "positive self-adjoint Hopf algebra" and its application to the representation theory of symmetric and (briefly) finite general linear groups. The notes then continue with the quasisymmetric and the noncommutative symmetric functions, some Hopf algebras formed from graphs, posets and matroids, and the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. Among the results surveyed are the Littlewood-Richardson rule and other symmetric function identities, Zelevinsky's structure theorem for PSHs, the antipode formula for P-partition enumerators, the Aguiar-Bergeron-Sottile universal property of QSym, the theory of Lyndon words, the Gessel-Reutenauer bijection, and Hazewinkel's polynomial freeness of QSym. The notes are written with a graduate student reader in mind, being mostly self-contained but requiring a good familiarity with multilinear algebra and -- for the representation-theory applications -- basic group representation theory.
