$\mathfrak{b}$-Hurwitz numbers from refined topological recursion
We prove that single $G$-weighted $\mathfrak{b}$-Hurwitz numbers with internal faces are computed by refined topological recursion on a rational spectral curve, for certain rational weights $G$. Consequently, the $\mathfrak{b}$-Hurwitz generating function analytically continues to a rational curve. In particular, our results cover the cases of $\mathfrak{b}$-monotone Hurwitz numbers, and the enumeration of maps and bipartite maps (with internal faces) on non-oriented surfaces. As an application, we prove that the correlators of the Gaussian, Jacobi and Laguerre $β$-ensembles are computed by refined topological recursion.
The structure of Hurwitz numbers with fixed ramification profile and varying genus
In 1891, Hurwitz introduced the enumeration of genus $g$, degree $d$, branched covers of the Riemann sphere with simple ramification over prescribed points and no branching elsewhere. He showed that for fixed degree $d$, the enumeration possesses a remarkable structure. More precisely, it can be expressed as a linear combination of exponentials $m^{2g-2+2d}$, where $m$ ranges over the integers from $1$ to $\binom{d}{2}$.
In this paper, we generalise this structural result to Hurwitz numbers that enumerate branched covers which also have a prescribed ramification profile over one point. Our proof fundamentally uses the infinite wedge space, in particular the connected correlators of products of $\mathcal{E}$-operators. The recent study of Hurwitz numbers has often focussed on their structure with fixed genus and varying ramification profile. Our main result is orthogonal to this, allowing for the explicit calculation and the asymptotic analysis of Hurwitz numbers in large genus.
We pose the broad question of which other enumerative problems exhibit analogous structure. We prove that orbifold Hurwitz numbers can also be expressed as a linear combination of exponentials and conjecture that monotone Hurwitz numbers share a similar structure, but with the inclusion of an additional linear term.
On $\mathbb N$-Coefficient Binomial Polynomiality of Hurwitz Numbers and Generalized Dessin Counting
In this paper, we study a certain type of Hurwitz numbers which count branched covers over the Riemann sphere admitting several branch points with fixed ramification types, one branch point with a fixed number of preimages, and one branch point with an arbitrary ramification type. We prove that the dependence of this kind of Hurwitz numbers on parts of the ramification type over the last point is a polynomial. Moreover, when expanding this polynomial in terms of products of binomial coefficients, we show that the coefficients are always non-negative integers via a pure combinatorial method. Our result generalizes the polynomiality in several models, including the one-part double Hurwitz numbers studied by Goulden-Jackson-Vakil, the one-part double Hurwitz numbers with completed cycles studied by Shadrin-Spitz-Zvonkine, and the generalized dessin counting.
Universal piecewise polynomiality for counting curves in toric surfaces
Inspired by piecewise polynomiality results of double Hurwitz numbers, Ardila and Brugallé introduced an enumerative problem which they call double Gromov--Witten invariants of Hirzebruch surfaces. These invariants serve as a two-dimensional analogue and satisfy a similar piecewise polynomial structure. More precisely, they introduced the enumeration of curves in Hirzebruch surfaces satisfying point conditions and tangency conditions on the two parallel toric boundaries. These conditions are stored in four partitions and the resulting invariants are piecewise polynomial in their entries. Moreover, they found that these expressions also behave polynomially with respect to the parameter determining the underlying Hirzebruch surfaces. Based on work of Ardila and Block, they proposed that such a polynomiality could also hold while changing between more general toric surfaces corresponding to $h$-transverse polygons. In this work, we answer this question affirmatively. Moreover, we express the resulting invariants for $h$-transverse polygons as matrix elements in the two-dimensional bosonic Fock space.

We review the notion of symplectic duality earlier introduced in the context of topological recursion. We show that the transformation of symplectic duality can be expressed as a composition of $x-y$ dualities in a broader context of log topological recursion. As a corollary, we establish nice properties of symplectic duality: various convenient explicit formulas, invertibility, group property, compatibility with topological recursion and KP integrability. As an application of these properties, we get a new and uniform proof of topological recursion for large families of weighted double Hurwitz numbers; this encompasses and significantly extends all previously known results on this matter.
$k$-leaky double Hurwitz descendants
We define a new class of enumerative invariants called $k$-leaky double Hurwitz descendants, generalizing both descendant integrals of double ramification cycles and the $k$-leaky double Hurwitz numbers introduced in previous work of Cavalieri, Markwig and Ranganathan. These numbers are defined as intersection numbers of the logarithmic DR cycle against $ψ$-classes and logarithmic classes coming from piecewise polynomials encoding fixed branch point conditions. We give a tropical graph sum formula for these new invariants, allowing us to show their piecewise polynomiality and a wall-crossing formula in genus zero. We also prove that in genus zero the invariants are always non-negative and give a complete classification of the cases where they vanish.

We upgrade the results of Borot--Bouchard--Chidambaram--Creutzig to show that the Gaiotto vector in $4d$ $\mathcal{N} = 2$ pure supersymmetric gauge theory admits an analytic continuation with respect to the energy scale (which can therefore be taken to be finite, instead of infinitesimal), and is computed by topological recursion on the (ramified) half Seiberg--Witten spectral curve. This has a number of interesting consequences for the Gaiotto vector: relations to intersection theory on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ in at least two different ways, Hurwitz numbers, quantum curves, and (almost complete) description of the correlators as analytic functions of $\hslash$ (instead of formal series). The same method is used to establish analogous results for the more general Whittaker vector constructed in the recent work of Chidambaram--Doł{ę}ga--Osuga.
Real algebraic curves and twisted Hurwitz numbers
We provide a direct correspondence between the $b$-Hurwitz numbers with $b=1$ from \cite{ChapuyDolega}, and twisted Hurwtiz numbers from \cite{TwistedHurwitz}. This provides a description of real coverings of the sphere with ramification on the real line in terms of monodromy.
Hurwitz numbers for reflection groups $G(m,1,n)$
We are extending results from \cite{B-Hurwitz} by building a parallel theory of simple Hurwitz numbers for the reflection groups $G(m,1,n)$. We also study analogs of the cut-and-join operators. An algebraic description as well as a description in terms of ramified covering of Hurwitz numbers is provided. An explicit formula for them in terms of Schur polynomials are provided. In addition the generating function of $G(m,1,n)$-Hurwitz numbers is shown to give rise to $m$ independent variables $τ$-function of the KP hierarchy. Finally we provide an ELSV-formula type for these new Hurwitz numbers.
Tropical twisted Hurwitz numbers for elliptic curves
Hurwitz numbers enumerate branched morphisms between Riemann surfaces. For a fixed elliptic target, Hurwitz numbers are intimately related to mirror symmetry following work of Dijkgraaf. In recent work of Chapuy and Dolega a new variant of Hurwitz numbers with fixed genus $0$ target was introduced that includes maps between between non-orientiable surfaces. These numbers are called $b$-Hurwitz numbers and are polynomials in a parameter $b$ which measures the non-orientability of the involved maps. An interpretation in terms of factorisations of $b$-Hurwitz numbers for $b=1$, so-called twisted Hurwitz numbers, was found in work of Burman and Fesler. In previous work, the authors derived a tropical geometry interpretation of these numbers. In this paper, we introduce a natural generalisation of twisted Hurwitz numbers with elliptic targets within the framework of symmetric groups. We derive a tropical interpretation of these invariants, relate them to Feynman integrals and derive an expression as a matrix element of an operator in the bosonic Fock space.
Differential equations for the series of hypermaps with control on their full degree profile
We consider the generating series of oriented and non-oriented hypermaps with controlled degrees of vertices, hyperedges and faces. It is well known that these series have natural expansions in terms of Schur and Zonal symmetric functions, and with some particular specializations, they satisfy the celebrated KP and BKP equations.
We prove that the full generating series of hypermaps satisfy a family of differential equations. We give a first proof which works for an $α$ deformation of these series related to Jack polynomials. This proof is based on a recent construction formula for Jack characters using differential operators. We also provide a combinatorial proof for the orientable case.
Our approach also applies to the series of $k$-constellations with control of the degrees of vertices of all colors. In other words, we obtain an equation for the generating function of Hurwitz numbers (and their $α$-deformations) with control of full ramification profiles above an arbitrary number of points. Such equations are new even in the orientable case.
$b$-Hurwitz numbers from Whittaker vectors for $\mathcal{W}$-algebras
We show that $b$-Hurwitz numbers with a rational weight are obtained by taking an explicit limit of a Whittaker vector for the $\mathcal{W}$-algebra of type $A$. Our result is a vast generalization of several previous results that treated the monotone case, and the cases of quadratic and cubic polynomial weights. It also provides an interpretation of the associated Whittaker vector in terms of generalized branched coverings that might be of independent interest. Our result is new even in the special case $b=0$ that corresponds to classical hypergeometric Hurwitz numbers, and implies that they are governed by the topological recursion of Eynard-Orantin. This gives an independent proof of the recent result of Bychkov-Dunin-Barkowski-Kazarian-Shadrin.
Constraints for $b$-deformed constellations
Hurwitz numbers count branched covers of the sphere and have been of interest in various fields of mathematics. Motivated by the Matching-Jack conjecture of Goulden and Jackson, Chapuy and Dołęga recently introduced a notion of $b$-deformed double weighted Hurwitz numbers. It equips orientable and non-orientable maps and constellations with $b$-weights defined inductively. It is then unclear whether some elementary properties of orientable maps remain true due to the nature of the $b$-weights. We consider here the case of the Virasoro constraints, which express that choosing a corner is equivalent to rooting in terms of generating functions. We prove this property for two families of $b$-deformed Hurwitz numbers, namely 3-constellations and bipartite maps with black vertices of degrees bounded by 3. The proof is built upon functional equations from Chapuy and Dołęga and a lemma which extracts the constraints provided they close in some appropriate sense for the commutator. This requires to calculate the constraint algebra which in those two families do not form a Lie algebra but a generalization of independent interest with structure operators instead of structure constants.
Signed Real Hurwitz numbers
In this paper, we enumerate with signs the holomorphic maps between Real Riemann surfaces. We relate the signs and the numbers obtained to the Real Gromov-Witten theory of the target. For a finite group $G$ with a non-trivial morphism to $\{ \pm 1 \}$, we present a signed count of principal $G$-bundles yielding a Klein Topological Quantum Field Theory.
Algorithms for Gromov-Witten Invariants of Elliptic Curves
We present an enhanced algorithm for exploring mirror symmetry for elliptic curves through the correspondence of algebraic and tropical geometry, focusing on Gromov-Witten invariants of elliptic curves and, in particular, Hurwitz numbers. We present a new highly efficient algorithm for computing generating series for these numbers. We have implemented the algorithm both using Singular and OSCAR. The implementations outperform by far the current method provided in Singular. The OSCAR implementation, benefiting in particular from just-in-time compilation, again by far outperforms the implementation of the new algorithm in Singular. This advancement in computing the Gromov-Witten invariants facilitates a study of number theoretic and geometric properties of the generating series, including quasi-modularity and homogeneity.
Hurwitz numbers with completed cycles and Gromov--Witten theory relative to at most three points
Hurwitz numbers with completed cycles are standard Hurwitz numbers with simple branch points replaced by completed cycles. In fact, simple branch points correspond to completed $2$-cycles. Okounkov and Pandharipande have established the remarkable GW/H correspondence, saying that the stationary sectors of the Gromov--Witten theory relative to $r$ points equal Hurwitz numbers with $r$ branch points besides the completed cycles. However, from the viewpoint of computation, known results for Hurwitz numbers (standard or with completed cycles) are mainly for $r\leq 2$. It is hard to obtain explicit formulas and then discuss the structural properties for the cases $r>2$. In this paper, we obtain explicit formulas for the case $r=3$ and uncover a number of structural properties of these Hurwitz numbers. For instance, we discover a piecewise polynomiality with respect to the orders of the completed cycles in addition to the parts of the profiles of branch points as usual, we show that certain hook-shape Hurwitz numbers are building blocks of all our Hurwitz numbers, and we prove an analogue of the celebrated $λ_g$-conjecture.
Combinatorics of pruned Hurwitz numbers
Hurwitz numbers enumerate branched morphisms between Riemannn surfaces with fixed numerical data. They represent important objects in enumerative geometry that are accessible by combinatorial techniques. In the past decade, many variants of Hurwitz numbers have appeared in the literature. In this paper, we focus on an exciting such variant that arises naturally from the theory of topological recursion: Pruned Hurwitz numbers. These are defined as an enumeration of a relevant subset of branched morphisms between Riemann surfaces, that yield smaller numbers than their classical counterparts while retaining maximal information. Thus, pruned Hurwitz numbers may be viewed as the core of the Hurwitz problem. In this paper, we develop the combinatorial theory of pruned Hurwitz numbers. In particular, motivated by the successful application of combinatorial techniques to classical Hurwitz numbers, we derive two new combinatorial expressions of pruned Hurwitz numbers. Firstly, we show that they may be expressed in terms of Hurwitz mobiles which are tree-like structure that arise from the theory of random planar maps. Secondly, we prove a tropical correspondence theorem which allows the enumeration of pruned Hurwitz numbers in terms of tropical covers.
Towards studying the structure of triple Hurwitz numbers
Going beyond the studies of single and double Hurwitz numbers, we report some progress towards studying Hurwitz numbers which correspond to ramified coverings of the Riemann sphere involving three nonsimple branch points. We first prove a recursion which implies a fundamental identity of Frobenius enumerating factorizations of a permutation in group algebra theory. We next apply the recursion to study Hurwitz numbers involving three nonsimple branch points (besides simple ones),two of them having deterministic ramification profiles while the remaining one having a prescribed number of preimages. The recursion allows us to obtain recurrences as well as explicit formulas for these numbers which also generalize a number of existing results on single and double Hurwitz numbers. The case where one of the nonsimple branch points with deterministic profile has a unique preimage (one-part quasi-triple Hurwitz numbers {or $(1,m)$-part triple Hurwitz numbers}) is particularly studied in detail. We prove an attractive dimension-reduction formula from which any one-part quasi-triple Hurwitz number can be reduced to quasi-triple Hurwitz numbers where both with deterministic profiles are fully ramified. We also obtain the polynomiality of one-part quasi-triple Hurwitz numbers analogous to that implied by the remarkable ELSV formula for single Hurwitz numbers, and discuss the potential connection to intersection theory.

Integration on complex Grassmannians, deformed monotone Hurwitz numbers, and interlacing phenomena

We introduce a family of polynomials, which arise in three distinct ways: in the large $N$ expansion of a matrix integral, as a weighted enumeration of factorisations of permutations, and via the topological recursion. More explicitly, we interpret the complex Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(M,N)$ as the space of $N \times N$ idempotent Hermitian matrices of rank $M$ and develop a Weingarten calculus to integrate products of matrix elements over it. In the regime of large $N$ and fixed ratio $\frac{M}{N}$, such integrals have expansions whose coefficients count factorisations of permutations into monotone sequences of transpositions, with each sequence weighted by a monomial in $t = 1 - \frac{N}{M}$. This gives rise to the desired polynomials, which specialise to the monotone Hurwitz numbers when $t = 1$.
These so-called deformed monotone Hurwitz numbers satisfy a cut-and-join recursion, a one-point recursion, and the topological recursion. Furthermore, we conjecture on the basis of overwhelming empirical evidence that the deformed monotone Hurwitz numbers are real-rooted polynomials whose roots satisfy remarkable interlacing phenomena.
An outcome of our work is the viewpoint that the topological recursion can be used to "topologise" sequences of polynomials, and we claim that the resulting families of polynomials may possess interesting properties. As a further case study, we consider a weighted enumeration of dessins d'enfant and conjecture that the resulting polynomials are also real-rooted and satisfy analogous interlacing properties.
