BKP and projective Hurwitz numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider $d$-fold branched coverings of the projective plane $\mathbb{RP}^2$ and show that the hypergeometric tau function of the BKP hierarchy of Kac and van de Leur is the generating function for weighted sums of the related Hurwitz numbers. In particular we get the $\mathbb{RP}^2$ analogues of the $\mathbb{CP}^1$ generating functions proposed by Okounkov and by Goulden and Jackson. Other examples are Hurwitz numbers weighted by the Hall-Littlewood and by the Macdonald polynomials. We also consider integrals of tau functions which generate projective Hurwitz numbers and Hurwitz numbers related to different Euler characteristics of the base Klein surfaces.

Integrality of the simple Hurwitz numbers
We show the integrality of the simple Hurwitz numbers. The main tool is the cut-and-join operator, and our proof is a purely combinatorial one.

The double Gromov-Witten invariants of Hirzebruch surfaces are piecewise polynomial
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define the double Gromov-Witten invariants of Hirzebruch surfaces in analogy with double Hurwitz numbers, and we prove that they satisfy a piecewise polynomiality property analogous to their 1-dimensional counterpart. Furthermore we show that each polynomial piece is either even or odd, and we compute its degree. Our methods combine floor diagrams and Ehrhart theory.

Multispecies quantum Hurwitz numbers
Published in Sigma 11, 097 (2015) • Search Publication
The construction of hypergeometric 2D Toda $τ$-functions as generating functions for quantum Hurwitz numbers is extended here to multispecies families. Both the enumerative geometrical significance of these multispecies quantum Hurwitz numbers as weighted enumerations of branched coverings of the Riemann sphere and their combinatorial significance in terms of weighted paths in the Cayley graph of $S_n$ are derived.
Bijections for simple and double Hurwitz numbers
We give a bijective proof of Hurwitz formula for the number of simple branched coverings of the sphere by itself. Our approach extends to double Hurwitz numbers and yields new properties for them. In particular we prove for double Hurwitz numbers a conjecture of Kazarian and Zvonkine, and we give an expression that in a sense interpolates between two celebrated polynomiality properties: polynomiality in chambers for double Hurwitz numbers, and a new analog for almost simple genus 0 Hurwitz numbers of the polynomiality up to normalization of simple Hurwitz numbers of genus $g$. Some probabilistic implications of our results for random branched coverings are briefly discussed in conclusion.

The combinatorics of real double Hurwitz numbers with real positive branch points
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. 2016.1 (2016), pp. 258-293 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the combinatorics of real double Hurwitz numbers with real positive branch points using the symmetric group. Our main focus is twofold. First, we prove correspondence theorems relating these numbers to counts of tropical real covers and study the structure of real double Hurwitz numbers with the help of the tropical count. Second, we express the numbers as counts of paths in a subgraph of the Cayley graph of the symmetric group. By restricting to real double Hurwitz numbers with real positive branch points, we obtain a concise translation of the counting problem in terms of tuples of elements of the symmetric group that enables us to uncover the beautiful combinatorics of these numbers both in tropical geometry and in the Cayley graph.

The matrix model for hypergeometric Hurwitz numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present the multi-matrix models that are the generating functions for branched covers of the complex projective line ramified over $n$ fixed points $z_i$, $i=1,\dots,n$, (generalized Grotendieck's dessins d'enfants) of fixed genus, degree, and the ramification profiles at two points, $z_1$ and $z_n$. We take a sum over all possible ramifications at other $n-2$ points with the fixed length of the profile at $z_2$ and with the fixed total length of profiles at the remaining $n-3$ points. All these models belong to a class of hypergeometric Hurwitz models thus being tau functions of the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy. In the case described above, we can present the obtained model as a chain of matrices with a (nonstandard) nearest-neighbor interaction of the type $\tr M_iM_{i+1}^{-1}$. We describe the technique for evaluating spectral curves of such models, which opens the possibility of applying the topological recursion for developing $1/N^2$-expansions of these model. These spectral curves turn out to be of an algebraic type.

Generating functions for weighted Hurwitz numbers
Published in J. Math. Phys. 58, 083503 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
Double Hurwitz numbers enumerating weighted $n$-sheeted branched coverings of the Riemann sphere or, equivalently, weighted paths in the Cayley graph of $S_n$ generated by transpositions are determined by an associated weight generating function. A uniquely determined $1$-parameter family of 2D Toda $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type is shown to consist of generating functions for such weighted Hurwitz numbers. Four classical cases are detailed, in which the weighting is uniform: Okounkov's double Hurwitz numbers, for which the ramification is simple at all but two specified branch points; the case of Belyi curves, with three branch points, two with specified profiles; the general case, with a specified number of branch points, two with fixed profiles, the rest constrained only by the genus; and the signed enumeration case, with sign determined by the parity of the number of branch points. Using the exponentiated quantum dilogarithm function as weight generator, three new types of weighted enumerations are introduced. These determine {\em quantum} Hurwitz numbers depending on a deformation parameter $q$. By suitable interpretation of $q$, the statistical mechanics of quantum weighted branched covers may be related to that of Bosonic gases. The standard double Hurwitz numbers are recovered in the classical limit.

Topological recursion and a quantum curve for monotone Hurwitz numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Classical Hurwitz numbers count branched covers of the Riemann sphere with prescribed ramification data, or equivalently, factorisations in the symmetric group with prescribed cycle structure data. Monotone Hurwitz numbers restrict the enumeration by imposing a further monotonicity condition on such factorisations. In this paper, we prove that monotone Hurwitz numbers arise from the topological recursion of Eynard and Orantin applied to a particular spectral curve. We furthermore derive a quantum curve for monotone Hurwitz numbers. These results extend the collection of enumerative problems known to be governed by the paradigm of topological recursion and quantum curves, as well as the list of analogues between monotone Hurwitz numbers and their classical counterparts.

Hypergeometric τ-functions, Hurwitz numbers and enumeration of paths
Published in Commun. Math. Phys. 338, 267-284 (2015) • View PublicationBIB
A multiparametric family of 2D Toda $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type is shown to provide generating functions for composite, signed Hurwitz numbers that enumerate certain classes of branched coverings of the Riemann sphere and paths in the Cayley graph of $S_n$. The coefficients $F^{c_1, ..., c_l}_{d_1, ..., d_m}(μ, ν)$ in their series expansion over products $P_μP'_ν$ of power sum symmetric functions in the two sets of Toda flow parameters and powers of the $l+m$ auxiliary parameters are shown to enumerate $|μ|=|ν|=n$ fold branched covers of the Riemann sphere with specified ramification profiles $ μ$ and $ν$ at a pair of points, and two sets of additional branch paints, satisfying certain additional conditions on their ramification profile lengths. The first group consists of $l$ branch points, with ramification profile lengths fixed to be the numbers $(n-c_1, ..., n- c_l)$; the second consists of $m$ further groups of "coloured" branch points, of variable number, for which the sums of the complements of the ramification profile lengths within the groups are fixed to equal the numbers $(d_1, ..., d_m)$. The latter are counted with sign determined by the parity of the total number of such branch points. The coefficients $F^{c_1, ..., c_l}_{d_1, ..., d_m}(μ, ν)$ are also shown to enumerate paths in the Cayley graph of the symmetric group $S_n$ generated by transpositions, starting, as in the usual double Hurwitz case, at an element in the conjugacy class of cycle type $μ$ and ending in the class of type $ν$, but with the first $l$ consecutive subsequences of $(c_1, ..., c_l)$ transpositions strictly monotonically increasing, and the subsequent subsequences of $(d_1, ..., d_m)$ transpositions weakly increasing.

Lozenge tilings and Hurwitz numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a new proof of the fact that, near a turning point of the frozen boundary, the vertical tiles in a uniformly random lozenge tiling of a large sawtooth domain are distributed like the eigenvalues of a GUE random matrix. Our argument uses none of the standard tools of integrable probability. In their place, it uses a combinatorial interpretation of the Harish-Chandra/Itzykson-Zuber integral as a generating function for desymmetrized Hurwitz numbers.

2D Toda τ-functions as combinatorial generating functions
Published in Lett. Math. Phys. 105, 827-852 (2015) • View PublicationBIB
Two methods of constructing 2D Toda $τ$-functions that are generating functions for certain geometrical invariants of a combinatorial nature are related. The first involves generation of paths in the Cayley graph of the symmetric group $S_n$ by multiplication of the conjugacy class sums $C_λ\in C[S_n]$ in the group algebra by elements of an abelian group of central elements. Extending the characteristic map to the tensor product $C[S_n]\otimes C[S_n]$ leads to double expansions in terms of power sum symmetric functions, in which the coefficients count the number of such paths. Applying the same map to sums over the orthogonal idempotents leads to diagonal double Schur function expansions that are identified as $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type. The second method is the standard construction of $τ$-functions as vacuum state matrix elements of products of vertex operators in a fermionic Fock space with elements of the abelian group of convolution symmetries. A homomorphism between these two group actions is derived and shown to be intertwined by the characteristic map composed with fermionization. Applications include Okounkov's generating function for double Hurwitz numbers, which count branched coverings of the Riemann sphere with nonminimal branching at two points, and various analogous combinatorial counting functions.

Tropicalizing the space of admissible covers
Published in Mathematische Annalen, Volume 364, Issue 3, April 2016, pp 1275-1313 • View PublicationBIB
We study the relationship between tropical and classical Hurwitz moduli spaces. Following recent work of Abramovich, Caporaso and Payne, we outline a tropicalization for the moduli space of generalized Hurwitz covers of an arbitrary genus curve. Our approach is to appeal to the geometry of admissible covers, which compactify the Hurwitz scheme. We define and construct a moduli space of tropical admissible covers, and study its relationship with the skeleton of the Berkovich analytification of the classical space of admissible covers. We use techniques from non-archimedean geometry to show that the tropical and classical tautological maps are compatible via tropicalization, and that the degree of the classical branch map can be recovered from the tropical side. As a consequence, we obtain a proof, at the level of moduli spaces, of the equality of classical and tropical Hurwitz numbers.

Pruned Hurwitz numbers

We define a new Hurwitz problem which is essentially a small core of the simple Hurwitz problem. The corresponding Hurwitz numbers have simpler formulae, satisfy effective recursion relations and determine the simple Hurwitz numbers. We also apply this idea of finding a smaller simpler enumerative problem to orbifold Hurwitz numbers and Belyi Hurwitz numbers.
Tropical mirror symmetry for elliptic curves
Published in J. Reine Angew. Math. (Crelles Journal), Vol. 2017, Issue 732, 211-246 • View PublicationBIB
Mirror symmetry relates Gromov-Witten invariants of an elliptic curve with certain integrals over Feynman graphs. We prove a tropical generalization of mirror symmetry for elliptic curves, i.e., a statement relating certain labeled Gromov-Witten invariants of a tropical elliptic curve to more refined Feynman integrals. This result easily implies the tropical analogue of the mirror symmetry statement mentioned above and, using the necessary Correspondence Theorem, also the mirror symmetry statement itself. In this way, our tropical generalization leads to an alternative proof of mirror symmetry for elliptic curves. We believe that our approach via tropical mirror symmetry naturally carries the potential of being generalized to more adventurous situations of mirror symmetry. Moreover, our tropical approach has the advantage that all involved invariants are easy to compute. Furthermore, we can use the techniques for computing Feynman integrals to prove that they are quasimodular forms. Also, as a side product, we can give a combinatorial characterization of Feynman graphs for which the corresponding integrals are zero. More generally, the tropical mirror symmetry theorem gives a natural interpretation of the A-model side (i.e., the generating function of Gromov-Witten invariants) in terms of a sum over Feynman graphs. Hence our quasimodularity result becomes meaningful on the A-model side as well. Our theoretical results are complemented by a Singular package including several procedures that can be used to compute Hurwitz numbers of the elliptic curve as integrals over Feynman graphs.

Toda Equations and Piecewise Polynomiality for Mixed Double Hurwitz Numbers
Published in SIGMA 12 (2016), 040, 10 pages • View PublicationBIB
This article introduces mixed double Hurwitz numbers, which interpolate combinatorially between the classical double Hurwitz numbers studied by Okounkov and the monotone double Hurwitz numbers introduced recently by Goulden, Guay-Paquet and Novak. Generalizing a result of Okounkov, we prove that a certain generating series for the mixed double Hurwitz numbers solves the 2-Toda hierarchy of partial differential equations. We also prove that the mixed double Hurwitz numbers are piecewise polynomial, thereby generalizing a result of Goulden, Jackson and Vakil.

In this paper, we present some Hurwitz-Hodge integral identities which are derived from the Laplace transform of the cut-and-join equation for the orbifold Hurwitz numbers. As an application, we prove a conjecture on Hurwitz-Hodge integral proposed by J. Zhou in 2008.

Tropical covers of curves and their moduli spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define the tropical moduli space of covers of a tropical line in the plane as weighted abstract polyhedral complex, and the tropical branch map recording the images of the simple ramifications. Our main result is the invariance of the degree of the branch map, which enables us to give a tropical intersection-theoretic definition of tropical triple Hurwitz numbers. We show that our intersection-theoretic definition coincides with the one given by Bertrand, Brugallé and Mikhalkin in the article "Tropical Open Hurwitz numbers" where a Correspondence Theorem for Hurwitz numbers is proved. Thus we provide a tropical intersection-theoretic justification for the multiplicities with which a tropical cover has to be counted. Our method of proof is to establish a local duality between our tropical moduli spaces and certain moduli spaces of relative stable maps to the projective line.

Symmetric solutions to dispersionless 2D Toda hierarchy, Hurwitz numbers and conformal dynamics
Published • View PublicationBIB
We explicitly construct the series expansion for a certain class of solutions to the 2D Toda hierarchy in the zero dispersion limit, which we call symmetric solutions. We express the Taylor coefficients through some universal combinatorial constants and find recurrence relations for them. These results are used to obtain new formulas for the genus 0 double Hurwitz numbers. They can also serve as a starting point for a constructive approach to the Riemann mapping problem and the inverse potential problem in 2D.

Asymptotic Hurwitz numbers
Published in Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications Vol. 23, No. 7 (2014) 1450033 • View PublicationBIB
The classical Hurwitz numbers of degree n together with the Hurwitz numbers of the seamed surfaces of degree n give rise to the Klein topological field theory. We extend this construction to the Hurwitz numbers of all degrees at once. The corresponding Cardy-Frobenius algebra is induced by arbitrary Young diagrams and arbitrary bipartite graphs. It turns out to be isomorphic to the algebra of differential operators from arXiv:1210.6955 which serves a model for open-closed string theory. The operator associated with the Young diagram of the transposition of two elements coincides with the cut-and-join operator which gives rise to relations for the classical Hurwitz numbers. We prove that the operators corresponding to arbitrary Young diagrams and bipartite graphs also give rise to relations for the Hurwitz numbers.
