A direct relation between the enumeration of ordinary maps and that of fully simple maps first appeared in the work of the first and last authors. The relation is via monotone Hurwitz numbers and was originally proved using Weingarten calculus for matrix integrals. The goal of this paper is to present two independent proofs that are purely combinatorial and generalise in various directions, such as to the setting of stuffed maps and hypermaps. The main motivation to understand the relation between ordinary and fully simple maps is the fact that it could shed light on fundamental, yet still not well-understood, problems in free probability and topological recursion.

Multicurrent correlators associated to KP $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type are used as generating functions for weighted Hurwitz numbers. These are expressed as formal Taylor series and used to compute generic, simple, rational and quantum weighted single Hurwitz numbers.
Generalisations of the Harer-Zagier recursion for 1-point functions
Harer and Zagier proved a recursion to enumerate gluings of a $2d$-gon that result in an orientable genus $g$ surface, in their work on Euler characteristics of moduli spaces of curves. Analogous results have been discovered for other enumerative problems, so it is natural to pose the following question: how large is the family of problems for which these so-called 1-point recursions exist?
In this paper, we prove the existence of 1-point recursions for a class of enumerative problems that have Schur function expansions. In particular, we recover the Harer-Zagier recursion, but our methodology also applies to the enumeration of dessins d'enfant, to Bousquet-Mélou-Schaeffer numbers, to monotone Hurwitz numbers, and more. On the other hand, we prove that there is no 1-point recursion that governs simple Hurwitz numbers. Our results are effective in the sense that one can explicitly compute particular instances of 1-point recursions, and we provide several examples. We conclude the paper with a brief discussion and a conjecture relating 1-point recursions to the theory of topological recursion.
Counts of (tropical) curves in $E\times \mathbb{P}^1$ and Feynman integrals
We study generating series of Gromov-Witten invariants of $E\times\mathbb{P}^1$ and their tropical counterparts. Using tropical degeneration and floor diagram techniques, we can express the generating series as sums of Feynman integrals, where each summand corresponds to a certain type of graph which we call a pearl chain. The individual summands are --- just as in the case of mirror symmetry of elliptic curves, where the generating series of Hurwitz numbers equals a sum of Feynman integrals --- complex analytic path integrals involving a product of propagators (equal to the Weierstrass-$\wp$-function plus an Eisenstein series). We also use pearl chains to study generating functions of counts of tropical curves in $E_{\mathbb{T}}\times\mathbb{P}^1_\mathbb{T}$ of so-called leaky degree.

Single Hurwitz numbers enumerate branched covers of the Riemann sphere with specified genus, prescribed ramification over infinity, and simple branching elsewhere. They exhibit a remarkably rich structure. In particular, they arise as intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves and are governed by the topological recursion of Chekhov, Eynard and Orantin. Double Hurwitz numbers are defined analogously, but with prescribed ramification over both zero and infinity. Goulden, Jackson and Vakil have conjectured that double Hurwitz numbers also arise as intersection numbers on moduli spaces.
In this paper, we repackage double Hurwitz numbers as enumerations of branched covers weighted by certain monomials and conjecture that they are governed by the topological recursion. Evidence is provided in the form of the associated quantum curve and low genus calculations. We furthermore reduce the conjecture to a weaker one, concerning a certain polynomial structure of double Hurwitz numbers. Via the topological recursion framework, our main conjecture should lead to a direct connection to enumerative geometry, thus shedding light on the aforementioned conjecture of Goulden, Jackson and Vakil.

Hurwitz numbers enumerate ramified coverings of the Riemann sphere with fixed ramification data. Certain kinds of ramification data are of particular interest, such as double Hurwitz numbers, which count covers with fixed arbitrary ramification over $0$ and $\infty$ and simple ramification over $b$ points, where $b$ is given by the Riemann-Hurwitz formula. In this work, we introduce the notion of bi-pruned double Hurwitz numbers. This is a new enumerative problem, which yields smaller numbers but completely determines double Hurwitz numbers. They count a relevant subset of covers and share many properties with double Hurwitz numbers, such as piecewise polynomial behaviour and an expression in the symmetric group. Thus, we may view them as a core of the double Hurwitz numbers problem. This work is built on and generalises previous work of Do--Norbury and the author.

We prove a tropical mirror symmetry theorem for descendant Gromov-Witten invariants of the elliptic curve, generalizing the tropical mirror symmetry theorem for Hurwitz numbers of the elliptic curve, Theorem 2.20 in [Böhm J., Bringmann K., Buchholz A., Markwig H., J. Reine Angew. Math. 732 (2017), 211-246, arXiv:1309.5893]. For the case of the elliptic curve, the tropical version of mirror symmetry holds on a fine level and easily implies the equality of the generating series of descendant Gromov-Witten invariants of the elliptic curve to Feynman integrals. To prove tropical mirror symmetry for elliptic curves, we investigate the bijection between graph covers and sets of monomials contributing to a coefficient in a Feynman integral. We also soup up the traditional approach in mathematical physics to mirror symmetry for the elliptic curve, involving operators on a Fock space, to give a proof of tropical mirror symmetry for Hurwitz numbers of the elliptic curve. In this way, we shed light on the intimate relation between the operator approach on a bosonic Fock space and the tropical approach.

We give formulae for the cumulants of complex Wishart (LUE) and inverse Wishart matrices (inverse LUE). Their large-$N$ expansions are generating functions of double (strictly and weakly) monotone Hurwitz numbers which count constrained factorisations in the symmetric group. The two expansions can be compared and combined with a duality relation proved in [F. D. Cunden, F. Mezzadri, N. O'Connell and N. J. Simm, arXiv:1805.08760] to obtain: i) a combinatorial proof of the reflection formula between moments of LUE and inverse LUE at genus zero and, ii) a new functional relation between the generating functions of monotone and strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers. The main result resolves the integrality conjecture formulated in [F. D. Cunden, F. Mezzadri, N. J. Simm and P. Vivo, J. Phys. A 49 (2016)] on the time-delay cumulants in quantum chaotic transport. The precise combinatorial description of the cumulants given here may cast new light on the concordance between random matrix and semiclassical theories.

We give a new proof of the cut-and-join equation for the monotone Hurwitz numbers, derived first by Goulden, Guay-Paquet, and Novak. Our proof in particular uses a combinatorial technique developed by Han.
The main interest in this particular equation is its close relation to the quadratic loop equation in the theory of spectral curve topological recursion, and we recall this motivation giving a new proof of the topological recursion for monotone Hurwitz numbers, obtained first by Do, Dyer, and Mathews.

The KP and 2D Toda tau-functions of hypergeometric type that serve as generating functions for weighted single and double Hurwitz numbers are related to the topological recursion programme. A graphical representation of such weighted Hurwitz numbers is given in terms of weighted constellations. The associated classical and quantum spectral spectral curves are derived, and these are interpreted combinatorially in terms of the graphical model. The pair correlators are given a finite Christoffel-Darboux representation and determinantal expressions are obtained for the multipair correlators. The genus expansion of the multicurrent correlators is shown to provide generating series for weighted Hurwitz numbers of fixed ramification profile lengths. The WKB series for the Baker function is derived and used to deduce the loop equations and the topological recursion relations in the case of polynomial weight functions.

We study the real counterpart of double Hurwitz numbers, called real double Hurwitz numbers here. We establish a lower bound for these numbers with respect to their dependence on the distribution of branch points. We use it to prove, under certain conditions, existence of real Hurwitz covers as well as logarithmic equivalence of real and classical Hurwitz numbers. The lower bound is based on the \enquote{tropical} computation of real Hurwitz numbers in arXiv:1412.4235.

This work concerns both the semiclassical and zero temperature asymptotics of quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers. The partition function for quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers can be interpreted in terms of the energy distri- bution of a quantum Bose gas with vanishing fugacity. We compute the leading semi- classical term of the partition function for three versions of the quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers, as well as lower order semiclassical corrections. The classical limit $\hbar \ra 0$ is shown to reproduce the simple single and double Hurwitz numbers studied by Pandharipande and Okounkov [20,22]. The KP-Toda $τ$-function that serves as generating function for the quantum Hurwitz numbers is shown to have the $τ$-function of [20,22] as its leading term in the classical limit, and, with suitable scaling, the same holds for the partition function, the weights and expectations of Hurwitz numbers. We also compute the zero temperature limit $T \ra 0$ of the partition function and quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers. The KP or Toda $τ$-function serving as generating function for the quantum Hurwitz numbers are shown to give the one for Belyi curves in the zero temperature limit and, with suitable scaling, the same holds true for the partition function, the weights and the expectations of Hurwitz numbers.

We rewrite the (extended) Ooguri-Vafa partition function for colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials for torus knots in terms of the free-fermion (semi-infinite wedge) formalism, making it very similar to the generating function for double Hurwitz numbers. This allows us to conjecture the combinatorial meaning of full expansion of the correlation differentials obtained via the topological recursion on the Brini-Eynard-Mariño spectral curve for the colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials of torus knots.
This correspondence suggests a structural combinatorial result for the extended Ooguri-Vafa partition function. Namely, its coefficients should have a quasi-polynomial behavior, where non-polynomial factors are given by the Jacobi polynomials. We prove this quasi-polynomiality in a purely combinatorial way. In addition to that, we show that the (0,1)- and (0,2)-functions on the corresponding spectral curve are in agreement with the extension of the colored HOMFLY-PT polynomials data.
Signed counts of real simple rational functions

We study the problem of counting real simple rational functions $\varphi$ with prescribed ramification data (i.e. a particular class of oriented real Hurwitz numbers of genus $0$). We introduce a signed count of such functions that is invariant under change of the branch locus, thus providing a lower bound for the actual count (which does depend on such change). We prove (non-)vanishing theorems for these signed counts and study their asymptotic growth when adding further simple branch points. The approach is based on the works of Itenberg and Zvonkine (arXiv:1609.05219) which treat the polynomial case.

We introduce the notion of fully simple maps, which are maps with non self-intersecting disjoint boundaries. In contrast, maps where such a restriction is not imposed are called ordinary. We study in detail the combinatorics of fully simple maps with topology of a disk or a cylinder. We show that the generating series of simple disks is given by the functional inversion of the generating series of ordinary disks. We also obtain an elegant formula for cylinders. These relations reproduce the relation between moments and free cumulants established by Collins et al. math.OA/0606431, and implement the symplectic transformation $x \leftrightarrow y$ on the spectral curve in the context of topological recursion. We conjecture that the generating series of fully simple maps are computed by the topological recursion after exchange of $x$ and $y$. We propose an argument to prove this statement conditionally to a mild version of symplectic invariance for the $1$-hermitian matrix model, which is believed to be true but has not been proved yet.
Our argument relies on an (unconditional) matrix model interpretation of fully simple maps, via the formal hermitian matrix model with external field. We also deduce a universal relation between generating series of fully simple maps and of ordinary maps, which involves double monotone Hurwitz numbers. In particular, (ordinary) maps without internal faces -- which are generated by the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble -- and with boundary perimeters $(λ_1,\ldots,λ_n)$ are strictly monotone double Hurwitz numbers with ramifications $λ$ above $\infty$ and $(2,\ldots,2)$ above $0$. Combining with a recent result of Dubrovin et al. math-ph/1612.02333, this implies an ELSV-like formula for these Hurwitz numbers.
Zero-temperature limit of quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers
The partition function for quantum weighted double Hurwitz numbers can be interpreted in terms of the energy distribution of a quantum Bose gas with vanishing fugacity. We compute the leading term of the partition function and the quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers in the zero temperature limit $T \rightarrow 0$, as well as the next order corrections. The leading term is shown to reproduce the case of uniformly weighted Hurwitz numbers of Belyi curves. In particular, the KP or Toda $τ$-function serving as generating function for the quantum Hurwitz numbers is shown in the limit to give the one for Belyi curves and, with suitable scaling, the same holds true for the partition function, the weights and the expectations of Hurwitz numbers.

A fermionic representation is given for all the quantities entering in the generating function approach to weighted Hurwitz numbers and topological recursion. This includes: KP and 2D Toda $τ$-functions of hypergeometric type, which serve as generating functions for weighted single and double Hurwitz numbers; the Baker function, which is expanded in an adapted basis obtained by applying the same dressing transformation to all vacuum basis elements; the multipair correlators and the multicurrent correlators. Multiplicative and differential recursion relations are deduced for the adapted bases and their duals, and a Christoffel-Darboux type formula is derived for the pair correlator. The quantum and classical spectral curves linking this theory with the topological recursion programme are derived, as well as the generalized cut and join equations. The results are detailed for four special cases: the simple single and double Hurwitz numbers, the weakly monotone case, corresponding to signed enumeration of coverings, the strongly monotone case, corresponding to Belyi curves and the simplest version of quantum weighted Hurwitz numbers.

In this paper, we study genus $0$ equivariant relative Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathbb{P}^1$ whose corresponding relative stable maps are totally ramified over one point. For fixed number of marked points, we show that such invariants are piecewise polynomials in some parameter space. The parameter space can then be divided into polynomial domains, called chambers. We determine the difference of polynomials between two neighboring chambers. In some special chamber, which we called the totally negative chamber, we show that such a polynomial can be expressed in a simple way. The chamber structure here shares some similarities to that of double Hurwitz numbers.

We perform a key step towards the proof of Zvonkine's conjectural $r$-ELSV formula that relates Hurwitz numbers with completed $(r+1)$-cycles to the geometry of the moduli spaces of the $r$-spin structures on curves: we prove the quasi-polynomiality property prescribed by Zvonkine's conjecture. Moreover, we propose an orbifold generalization of Zvonkine's conjecture and prove the quasi-polynomiality property in this case as well. In addition to that, we study the $(0,1)$- and $(0,2)$-functions in this generalized case and we show that these unstable cases are correctly reproduced by the spectral curve initial data.

Hurwitz numbers count genus $g$, degree $d$ covers of the complex projective line with fixed branched locus and fixed ramification data. An equivalent description is given by factorisations in the symmetric group. Simple double Hurwitz numbers are a class of Hurwitz-type counts of specific interest. In recent years a related counting problem in the context of random matrix theory was introduced as so-called monotone Hurwitz numbers. These can be viewed as a desymmetrised version of the Hurwitz-problem. A combinatorial interpolation between simple and monotone double Hurwitz numbers was introduced as mixed double Hurwitz numbers and it was proved that these objects are piecewise polynomial in a certain sense. Moreover, the notion of strictly monotone Hurwitz numbers has risen interest as it is equivalent to a certain Grothendieck dessins d'enfant count. In this paper, we introduce a combinatorial interpolation between simple, monotone and strictly monotone double Hurwitz numbers as \textit{triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers}. Our aim is twofold: Using a connection between triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers and tropical covers in terms of so-called monodromy graphs, we give algorithms to compute the polynomials for triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers in all genera using Erhart theory. We further use this approach to study the wall-crossing behaviour of triply interpolated Hurwitz numbers in genus $0$ in terms of related Hurwitz-type counts. All those results specialise to the extremal cases of simple, monotone and Grothendieck dessins d'enfants Hurwitz numbers.
