Nilsson solutions for irregular A-hypergeometric systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the solutions of irregular A-hypergeometric systems that are constructed from Gröbner degenerations with respect to generic positive weight vectors. These are formal logarithmic Puiseux series that belong to explicitly described Nilsson rings, and are therefore called (formal) Nilsson series. When the weight vector is a perturbation of (1,...,1), these series converge and provide a basis for the (multivalued) holomorphic hypergeometric functions in a specific open subset of complex n-space. Our results are more explicit when the parameters are generic or when the solutions studied are logarithm-free. We also give an alternative proof of a result of Schulze and Walther that inhomogeneous A-hypergeometric systems have irregular singularities.

Power law behavior associated with a Fibonacci Lucas model and generalized statistical models
A Fibonacci-Lucas based statistical model and several other related models are studied. The canonical and grand canonical partition functions for these models are developed.Partition structure such as the distribution of sizes as in a cluster distribution is explored.Ensemble averaging over all partitions leads to a scale invariant power law behavior at a particular critical like point. The canonical ensemble of the Fibonacci-Lucas case involves the Gegenbauer polynomial. The model has a hyperbolic power law behavior, a feature linked to the golden mean ratio of two adjacent Fibonacci numbers and also the connection of Lucas numbers to the golden mean. The relation to other power law behavior, such as Zipf and Pareto laws, is mentioned. For the cases considered, the grand canonical ensemble involves the Gauss hypergeometric function F(a,b,c,z) with specific values for a,b,c. The general case has a variable power law behavior with tau exponent equal to1+c-a-b. An application with a=1/2, b=1, c=3 and thus tau=5/2 very closely approximates Bose-Einstein condensation. The zeta function zeta(3/2)=2.61 of the exact theory is replaced with 8/3 and zeta(5/2)= 1.34 with 4/3. At the condensation point the number of cycles of length falls as a scale invariant power law. The cycles, which arise from permutation symmetries associated with Bose-Einstein statistics, can be viewed as links in a complex network of connections between particles. This scale invariant power law parallels that seen in complex networks. The growth of the network is developed using recurrence properties of the model. Constraints imposed by the canonical ensemble and associates correlations lead to some number theoretic connections between Fibonacci and Lucas numbers as an incidental consequence of this approach.

Exact Solution of the Discrete (1+1)-dimensional RSOS Model with Field and Surface Interactions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present the solution of a linear Restricted Solid--on--Solid (RSOS) model in a field. Aside from the origins of this model in the context of describing the phase boundary in a magnet, interest also comes from more recent work on the steady state of non-equilibrium models of molecular motors. While similar to a previously solved (non-restricted) SOS model in its physical behaviour, mathematically the solution is more complex. Involving basic hypergeometric functions ${}_3φ_2$, it introduces a new form of solution to the lexicon of directed lattice path generating functions.
The structure of bivariate rational hypergeometric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We describe the structure of all codimension-two lattice configurations $A$ which admit a stable rational $A$-hypergeometric function, that is a rational function $F$ all whose partial derivatives are non zero, and which is a solution of the $A$-hypergeometric system of partial differential equations defined by Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. We show, moreover, that all stable rational $A$-hypergeometric functions may be described by toric residues and apply our results to study the rationality of bivariate series whose coefficients are quotients of factorials of linear forms.

The z-measures on partitions, Pfaffian point processes, and the matrix hypergeometric kernel
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider a point process on one-dimensional lattice originated from the harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group, and defined by the z-measures with the deformation (Jack) parameter 2. We derive an exact Pfaffian formula for the correlation function of this process. Namely, we prove that the correlation function is given as a Pfaffian with a matrix kernel. The kernel is given in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric functions, and can be considered as a matrix analogue of the Hypergeometric kernel introduced by A. Borodin and G. Olshanski. Our result holds for all values of admissible complex parameters.

An Identity of Andrews and a New Method for the Riordan Array Proof of Combinatorial Identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider an identity relating Fibonacci numbers to Pascal's triangle discovered by G. E. Andrews. Several authors provided proofs of this identity, most of them rather involved or else relying on sophisticated number theoretical arguments. We present a new proof, quite simple and based on a Riordan array argument. The main point of the proof is the construction of a new Riordan array from a given Riordan array, by the elimination of elements. We extend the method and as an application we obtain other identities, some of which are new. An important feature of our construction is that it establishes a nice connection between the generating function of the $A-$sequence of a certain class of Riordan arrays and hypergeometric functions.

Addition Theorems Via Continued Fractions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show connections between a special type of addition formulas and a theorem of Stieltjes and Rogers. We use different techniques to derive the desirable addition formulas. We apply our approach to derive special addition theorems for Bessel functions and confluent hypergeometric functions. We also derive several additions theorems for basic hypergeometric functions. Applications to the evaluation of Hankel determinants are also given .

Factorial ratios, hypergeometric series, and a family of step functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a complete classification of a certain family of step functions related to the Nyman--Beurling approach to the Riemann hypothesis and previously studied by V. I. Vasyunin. Equivalently, we completely describe when certain sequences of ratios of factorial products are always integral. Essentially, once certain observations are made, this comes down to an application of Beukers and Heckman's classification of the monodromy of the hypergeometric function nF_{n-1}. We also note applications to the classification of cyclic quotient singularities.

Regular trees in random regular graphs
We investigate the size of the embedded regular tree rooted at a vertex in a $d$ regular random graph. We show that almost always, the radius of this tree will be ${1/2}\log n$, where $n$ is the number of vertices in the graph. And we give an asymptotic estimate for Gauss' Hypergeometric Function.

Multicritical continuous random trees
Published in J. Stat. Mech. (2006) P04004 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce generalizations of Aldous' Brownian Continuous Random Tree as scaling limits for multicritical models of discrete trees. These discrete models involve trees with fine-tuned vertex-dependent weights ensuring a k-th root singularity in their generating function. The scaling limit involves continuous trees with branching points of order up to k+1. We derive explicit integral representations for the average profile of this k-th order multicritical continuous random tree, as well as for its history distributions measuring multi-point correlations. The latter distributions involve non-positive universal weights at the branching points together with fractional derivative couplings. We prove universality by rederiving the same results within a purely continuous axiomatic approach based on the resolution of a set of consistency relations for the multi-point correlations. The average profile is shown to obey a fractional differential equation whose solution involves hypergeometric functions and matches the integral formula of the discrete approach.

The correlation functions of vertex operators and Macdonald polynomials
Published in J. Algebr. comb. 25 (2007), 43--56. • View PublicationBIB
The n-point correlation functions introduced by Bloch and Okounkov have already found several geometric connections and algebraic generalizations. In this Note we formulate a q,t-deformation of this n-point function. The key operator used in our formulation arises from the theory of Macdonald polynomials and affords a vertex operator interpretation. We obtain closed formulas for the n-point functions when n =1,2 in terms of the basic hypergeometric functions. We further generalize the q,t-deformed n-point function to more general vertex operators.

Combinatorial construction of toric residues
Published in Ann. Inst. Fourier (Grenoble) 55, no. 2 (2005), 511--548 • View PublicationBIB
The toric residue is a map depending on n+1 semi-ample divisors on a complete toric variety of dimension n. It appears in a variety of contexts such as sparse polynomial systems, mirror symmetry, and GKZ hypergeometric functions. In this paper we investigate the problem of finding an explicit element whose toric residue is equal to one. Such an element is shown to exist if and only if the associated polytopes are essential. We reduce the problem to finding a collection of partitions of the lattice points in the polytopes satisfying a certain combinatorial property. We use this description to solve the problem when n=2 and for any n when the polytopes of the divisors share a complete flag of faces. The latter generalizes earlier results when the divisors were all ample.
A regularity result for a locus of Brill type
Let n,d be positive integers, with d even (say d=2e). Let X_(n,d) denote the locus of degree d hypersurfaces in P^n which consist of two e-fold hyperplanes. We bound the regularity of the ideal of this variety. Moreover, we show that this variety is r-normal for r at least 2. The proof of the latter part is is a result of a tripartite collaboration of algebraic geometry, classical invariant theory and theoretical physics. It is executed by reducing the question to a combinatorial calculation involving Feynman diagrams and hypergeometric functions.

A Generalization of Euler's Hypergeometric Transformation
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 358 (2006), 39-57 • View PublicationBIB
Euler's transformation formula for the Gauss hypergeometric function 2F1 is extended to hypergeometric functions of higher order. Unusually, the generalized transformation constrains the hypergeometric function parameters algebraically but not linearly. Its consequences for hypergeometric summation are explored. It has as corollary a summation formula of Slater. From this formula new one-term evaluations of 2F1(-1) and 3F2(1) are derived, by applying transformations in the Thomae group. Their parameters are also constrained nonlinearly. Several new one-term evaluations of 2F1(-1) with linearly constrained parameters are derived as well.

Z-measures on partitions and their scaling limits
Published in European J. Combin. 26 (2005), no. 6, 795--834 • Search Publication
We study certain probability measures on partitions of n=1,2,..., originated in representation theory, and demonstrate their connections with random matrix theory and multivariate hypergeometric functions. Our measures depend on three parameters including an analog of the beta parameter in random matrix models. Under an appropriate limit transition as n goes to infinity, our measures converge to certain limit measures, which are of the same nature as one-dimensional log-gas with arbitrary beta>0. The first main result says that averages of products of ``characteristic polynomials'' with respect to the limit measures are given by the multivariate hypergeometric functions of type (2,0). The second main result is a computation of the limit correlation functions for the even values of beta.

Integrals over Grassmannians and Random permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
In testing the independence of two Gaussian populations, one computes the distribution of the sample canonical correlation coefficients, given that the actual correlation is zero. The "Laplace transform" of this distribution is not only an integral over the Grassmannian of p-dimensional planes in complex n-space, but is also related to a generalized hypergeometric function. Such integrals are solutions of Painlevé-like equations. They also have expansions, related to random words of length l formed with an alphabet of p letters. Given that each letter appears in the word, the maximal length of the disjoint union of p increasing subsequences of the word clearly equals l. But the maximal length of the disjoint union of p-1 increasing subsequences leads to a non-trivial distribution. It is precisely this probability which appears in the expansion above.

Harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group and determinantal point processes
Published in Ann. of Math. 161 (2005), no. 3, 1319--1422 • View PublicationBIB
The infinite-dimensional unitary group U(infinity) is the inductive limit of growing compact unitary groups U(N). In this paper we solve a problem of harmonic analysis on U(infinity) stated in the previous paper math/0109193. The problem consists in computing spectral decomposition for a remarkable 4-parameter family of characters of U(infinity). These characters generate representations which should be viewed as analogs of nonexisting regular representation of U(infinity). The spectral decomposition of a character of U(infinity) is described by the spectral measure which lives on an infinite-dimensional space Omega of indecomposable characters. The key idea which allows us to solve the problem is to embed Omega into the space of point configurations on the real line without 2 points. This turns the spectral measure into a stochastic point process on the real line. The main result of the paper is a complete description of the processes corresponding to our concrete family of characters. We prove that each of the processes is a determinantal point process. That is, its correlation functions have determinantal form with a certain kernel. Our kernels have a special `integrable' form and are expressed through the Gauss hypergeometric function. In simpler situations of harmonic analysis on infinite symmetric group and harmonic analysis of unitarily invariant measures on infinite hermitian matrices similar results were obtained in our papers math/9810015, math/9904010, math-ph/0010015.

Exceptional parameters for generic A-hypergeometric systems
The holonomic rank of an A-hypergeometric system $H_A(β)$ is conjectured to be independent of the parameter vector $β$ if and only if the toric ideal $I_A$ is Cohen Macaulay. We prove this conjecture in the case that $I_A$ is generic by explicitly constructing more than $\vol(A)$ many linearly independent hypergeometric functions for parameters $β$ coming from embedded primes of certain initial ideals of $I_A$.
Rational Hypergeometric Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Multivariate hypergeometric functions associated with toric varieties were introduced by Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. Singularities of such functions are discriminants, that is, divisors projectively dual to torus orbit closures. We show that most of these potential denominators never appear in rational hypergeometric functions. We conjecture that the denominator of any rational hypergeometric function is a product of resultants, that is, a product of special discriminants arising from Cayley configurations. This conjecture is proved for toric hypersurfaces and for toric varieties of dimension at most three. Toric residues are applied to show that every toric resultant appears in the denominator of some rational hypergeometric function.
