Enumerating path diagrams in connection with $q$-tangent and $q$-secant numbers
We enumerate height-restricted path diagrams associated with $q$-tangent and $q$-secant numbers by considering convergents of continued fractions, leading to expressions involving basic hypergeometric functions. Our work generalises some results by M. Josuat-Vergés for unrestricted path diagrams [European Journal of Combinatorics 31 (2010) 1892].

Spectral zeta functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper discusses the simplest examples of spectral zeta functions, especially those associated with graphs, a subject which has not been much studied. The analogy and the similar structure of these functions, such as their parallel definition in terms of the heat kernel and their functional equations, are emphasized. Another theme is to point out various contexts in which these non-classical zeta functions appear. This includes Eisenstein series, the Langlands program, Verlinde formulas, Riemann hypotheses, Catalan numbers, Dedekind sums, and hypergeometric functions. Several open-ended problems are suggested with the hope of stimulating further research.

Some exact solutions of the Volterra lattice
Published in Theoret. Math. Phys. 201:1 (2019) 1442-1456 • View PublicationBIB
We study solutions of the Volterra lattice satisfying the stationary equation for its non-autonomous symmetry. It is shown that the dynamics in $t$ and $n$ are governed by the continuous and discrete Painlevé equations, respectively. The class of initial data leading to regular solutions is described. For the lattice on the half-line, these solutions are expressed in terms of the confluent hypergeometric function. The Hankel transform of the coefficients of the corresponding Taylor series is computed on the basis of the Wronskian representation of the solution.

The q-Hahn PushTASEP
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP --- an integrable stochastic interacting particle system which is a 3-parameter generalization of the PushTASEP, a well-known close relative of the TASEP (Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process). The transition probabilities in the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP are expressed through the $_4φ_3$ basic hypergeometric function. Under suitable limits, the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP degenerates to all known integrable (1+1)-dimensional stochastic systems with a pushing mechanism. One can thus view our new system as a pushing counterpart of the $q$-Hahn TASEP introduced by Povolotsky (2013). We establish Markov duality relations and contour integral formulas for the $q$-Hahn PushTASEP. In a $q\to 1$ limit of our process we arrive at a random recursion which, in a special case, appears to be similar to the inverse-Beta polymer model. However, unlike in recursions for Beta polymer models, the weights (i.e., the coefficients of the recursion) in our model depend on the previous values of the partition function in a nontrivial manner.
Operational Methods in the Study of Sobolev-Jacobi Polynomials
Published in Mathematics, vol. 7, no. 2, p. 124, Jan. 2019 • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by ideas from umbral calculus and based on the two types of integrals occurring in the defining equations for the gamma and the reciprocal gamma functions, respectively, we develop a multi-variate version of umbral calculus and of the so-called umbral image technique. Besides providing a class of new formulae for generalized hypergeometric functions and an implementation of series manipulations for computing lacunary generating functions, our main application of these techniques is the study of Sobolev-Jacobi polynomials. Motivated by applications to theoretical chemistry, we moreover present a deep link between generalized normal-ordering techniques introduced by Gurappa and Panigrahi, two-variable Hermite polynomials and our integral-based series transforms. Notably, we thus calculate all K-tuple L-shifted lacunary exponential generating functions for a certain family of SJ polynomials explicitly.

Some Double Sums Involving Ratios of Binomial Coefficients Arising From Urn Models
In this paper we discuss a class of double sums involving ratios of binomial coefficients. The sums are of the form \[ \sum_{j=0}^{n} \sum_{i=0}^j \frac{\binom{f_1(n)}{i}}{\binom{f_2(n)}{j}}\,c^{i-j}, \] where $f_1, f_2$ are functions of $n$. Such sums appear in the analyses of the Mabinogion urn and the Ehrenfest urn in probability. Using hypergeometric functions, we are able to simplify these sums, and in some cases express them in terms of the harmonic numbers.
Explicit formulae for all higher order exponential lacunary generating functions of Hermite polynomials
For a sequence $P=(p_n(x))_{n=0}^{\infty}$ of polynomials $p_n(x)$, we study the $K$-tuple and $L$-shifted exponential lacunary generating functions $\mathcal{G}_{K,L}(λ;x):=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}\frac{λ^n}{n!} p_{n\cdot K+L}(x)$, for $K=1,2\dotsc$ and $L=0,1,2\dotsc$. We establish an algorithm for efficiently computing $\mathcal{G}_{K,L}(λ;x)$ for generic polynomial sequences $P$. This procedure is exemplified by application to the study of Hermite polynomials, whereby we obtain closed-form expressions for $\mathcal{G}_{K,L}(λ;x)$ for arbitrary $K$ and $L$, in the form of infinite series involving generalized hypergeometric functions. The basis of our method is provided by certain resummation techniques, supplemented by operational formulae. Our approach also reproduces all the results previously known in the literature.

An Elementary Dyadic Riemann Hypothesis
The connection zeta function of a finite abstract simplicial complex G is defined as zeta_L(s)=sum_x 1/lambda_x^s, where lambda_x are the eigenvalues of the connection Laplacian L defined by L(x,y)=1 if x and y intersect and 0 else. (I) As a consequence of the spectral formula chi(G)=sum_x (-1)^dim(x) = p(G)-n(G), where p(G) is the number of positive eigenvalues and n(G) is the number of negative eigenvalues of L, both the Euler characteristic chi(G)=zeta(0)-2 i zeta'(0)/pi as well as determinant det(L)=e^zeta'(0)/pi can be written in terms of zeta. (II) As a consequence of the generalized Cauchy-Binet formula for the coefficients of the characteristic polynomials of a product of matrices we show that for every one-dimensional simplicial complex G, the functional equation zeta(s)=zeta(-s) holds, where zeta(s) is the Zeta function of the positive definite squared connection operator L^2 of G. Equivalently, the spectrum sigma of the integer matrix L^2 for a 1-dimensional complex always satisfies the symmetry sigma = 1/sigma and the characteristic polynomial of L^2 is palindromic. The functional equation extends to products of one-dimensional complexes. (III) Explicit expressions for the spectrum of circular connection Laplacian lead to an explicit entire zeta function in the Barycentric limit. The situation is simpler than in the Hodge Laplacian H=D^2 case where no functional equation was available. In the connection Laplacian case, the limiting zeta function is a generalized hypergeometric function which for an integer s is given by an elliptic integral over the real elliptic curve w^2=(1+z)(1-z)(z^2-4z-1), which has the analytic involutive symmetry (z,w) to (1/z,w/z^2).

Supercongruences for rigid hypergeometric Calabi--Yau threefolds
Published in Adv. Math. 393 (2021) Article 108058 • View PublicationBIB
We establish the supercongruences for the fourteen rigid hypergeometric Calabi--Yau threefolds over $\mathbb Q$ conjectured by Rodriguez-Villegas in 2003. Our first method is based on Dwork's theory of $p$-adic unit roots and it allows us to establish the supercongruences between the truncated hypergeometric series and the corresponding unit roots for ordinary primes. The other method makes use of the theory of hypergeometric motives, in particular, adapts the techniques from the recent work of Beukers, Cohen and Mellit on finite hypergeometric sums over $\mathbb Q$. Essential ingredients in executing the both approaches are the modularity of the underlying Calabi--Yau threefolds and a $p$-adic perturbation method applied to hypergeometric functions.

Elliptic hypergeometric functions associated with root systems

We give a survey of elliptic hypergeometric functions associated with root systems, comprised of three main parts. The first two form in essence an annotated table of the main evaluation and transformation formulas for elliptic hypergeometric integeral and series on root systems. The third and final part gives an introduction to Rains' elliptic Macdonald-Koornwinder theory (in part also developed by Coskun and Gustafson).

Weighted Hurwitz numbers and topological recursion: an overview
Published in J. Math. Phys. {\bf 59}, 081102 (2018) • View PublicationBIB
Multiparametric families of hypergeometric $τ$-functions of KP or Toda type serve as generating functions for weighted Hurwitz numbers, providing weighted enumerations of branched covers of the Riemann sphere. A graphical interpretation of the weighting is given in terms of constellations mapped onto the covering surface. The theory is placed within the framework of topological recursion, with the Baker function at ${\bf t} ={\bf 0}$ shown to satisfy the quantum spectral curve equation, whose classical limit is rational. A basis for the space of formal power series in the spectral variable is generated that is adapted to the Grassmannian element associated to the $τ$-function. Multicurrent correlators are defined in terms of the $τ$-function and shown to provide an alternative generating function for weighted Hurwitz numbers. Fermionic VEV representations are provided for the adapted bases, pair correlators and multicurrent correlators. Choosing the weight generating function as a polynomial, and restricting the number of nonzero "second" KP flow parameters in the Toda $τ$-function to be finite implies a finite rank covariant derivative equation with rational coefficients satisfied by a finite "window" of adapted basis elements. The pair correlator is shown to provide a Christoffel-Darboux type finite rank integrable kernel, and the WKB series coefficients of the associated adjoint system are computed recursively, leading to topological recursion relations for the generators of the weighted Hurwitz numbers.

Three friendly walkers
Published in J Phys A 50, 024003 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
More than 15 years ago Guttmann and Vöge [J. Statist. Plann. Inference, {\bf 101}, 107 (2002)], introduced a model of friendly walkers. Since then it has remained unsolved. In this paper we provide the exact solution to a closely allied model, originally introduced by Tsuchiya and Katori [J. Phys. Soc. Japan {\bf 67}, 1655 (1988)], which essentially only differs in the boundary conditions. The exact solution is expressed in terms of the reciprocal of the generating function for vicious walkers which is a D-finite function. However, ratios of D-finite functions are inherently not D-finite and in this case we prove that the friendly walkers generating function is the solution to a non-linear differential equation with polynomial coefficients, it is in other words D-algebraic. We then show via numerically exact calculations that the generating function of the original model can also be expressed as a D-finite function times the reciprocal of the generating function for vicious walkers. We obtain an expression for this D-finite function in terms of a ${}_{2}F_{1}$ hypergeometric function with a rational pullback and its first and second derivatives.

On the enumeration of k-omino towers
Published in Discrete Math. 340 (2017), 1319--1326 • View PublicationBIB
We describe a class of fixed polyominoes called $k$-omino towers that are created by stacking rectangular blocks of size $k\times 1$ on a convex base composed of these same $k$-omino blocks. By applying a partition to the set of $k$-omino towers of fixed area $kn$, we give a recurrence on the $k$-omino towers therefore showing the set of $k$-omino towers is enumerated by a Gauss hypergeometric function. The proof in this case implies a more general hypergeometric identity with parameters similar to those given in a classical result of Kummer.
Hypergeometric Expressions for Generating Functions of Walks with Small Steps in the Quarter Plane
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study nearest-neighbors walks on the two-dimensional square lattice, that is, models of walks on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ defined by a fixed step set that is a subset of the non-zero vectors with coordinates 0, 1 or $-1$. We concern ourselves with the enumeration of such walks starting at the origin and constrained to remain in the quarter plane $\mathbb{N}^2$, counted by their length and by the position of their ending point. Bousquet-Mélou and Mishna [Contemp. Math., pp. 1--39, Amer. Math. Soc., 2010] identified 19 models of walks that possess a D-finite generating function; linear differential equations have then been guessed in these cases by Bostan and Kauers [FPSAC 2009, Discrete Math. Theor. Comput. Sci. Proc., pp. 201--215, 2009]. We give here the first proof that these equations are indeed satisfied by the corresponding generating functions. As a first corollary, we prove that all these 19 generating functions can be expressed in terms of Gauss' hypergeometric functions that are intimately related to elliptic integrals. As a second corollary, we show that all the 19 generating functions are transcendental, and that among their $19 \times 4$ combinatorially meaningful specializations only four are algebraic functions.

This work is motivated by solving second order linear differential equations, with d=5 true singularities, in terms of hypergeometric functions. A similar problem was solved for d=4 by Vidunas and Filipuk.

An explicit prime geodesic theorem for discrete tori and the hypergeometric functions
Published in Math. Z., 289 (2018) No. 1, 361 -- 376 • View PublicationBIB
The discrete tori are graph analogues of the real tori, which are defined by the Cayley graphs of a finite product of finite cyclic groups. In this paper, using the theory of the heat kernel on the discrete tori established by Chinta, Jorgenson and Karlsson, we derive an explicit prime geodesic theorem for the discrete tori, which is not an asymptotic formula. To describe the formula, we need generalizations of the classical Jacobi polynomials, which are defined by the Lauricella multivariable hypergeometric function of type C.

Holonomic Tools for Basic Hypergeometric Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
With the exception of q-hypergeometric summation, the use of computer algebra packages implementing Zeilberger's "holonomic systems approach" in a broader mathematical sense is less common in the field of q-series and basic hypergeometric functions. A major objective of this article is to popularize the usage of such tools also in these domains. Concrete case studies showing software in action introduce to the basic techniques. An application highlight is a new computer-assisted proof of the celebrated Ismail-Zhang formula, an important q-analog of a classical expansion formula of plane waves in terms of Gegenbauer polynomials.

Normalized incomplete beta function: log-concavity in parameters and other properties
Published • View PublicationBIB
The normalized incomplete beta function can be defined either as cumulative distribution function of beta density or as the Gauss hypergeometric function with one of the upper parameters equal to unity. Logarithmic concavity/convexity of this function in parameters was established by Finner and Roters in 1997. Their proof is indirect and rather difficult; it is based on generalized reproductive property of certain more general distributions. These authors remark that these results "seems to be very hard to obtain by usual analytic methods". In the first part of this paper we provide such proof based on standard tools of analysis. In the second part we go one step further and investigate the sign of generalized Turán determinants formed by shifts of the normalized incomplete beta function. Under some additional restrictions we demonstrate that these coefficients are of the same sign. We further conjecture that such restrictions can be removed without altering the results. Our method of proof also leads to various companion results which may be of independent interest. In particular, we establish linearization formulas and two-sided bounds for the above mentioned Turán determinants. Further, we find two combinatorial style identities for finite sums which we believe to be new.

Reductions of particular hypergeometric functions $_3F_2(a,a+1/3,a+2/3;p/3,q/3;\pm 1)$
We principally present reductions of certain generalized hypergeometric functions $_3F_2(\pm 1)$ in terms of products of elementary functions. Most of these results have been known for some time, but one of the methods, wherein we simultaneously solve for three alternating binomial sums, may be new. We obtain a functional equation holding for all three of this set of alternating binomial sums. Using successive derivatives, we show how related chains of $_3F_2(\pm 1)$ values may be obtained. It may be emphasized that we make no reliance on the WZ method for hypergeometric summation. Additional material on Pochhammer symbols and certain of their products is presented in an Appendix to supplement the pedagogical content of the paper.
