Bogoyavlensky lattices and generalized Catalan numbers
Published in Russian J. Math. Phys. 31, 1-23 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
We study the problem of the decay of initial data in the form of a unit step for the Bogoyavlensky lattices. In contrast to the Gurevich--Pitaevskii problem of the decay of initial discontinuity for the KdV equation, it turns out to be exactly solvable, since the dynamics is linearizable due to termination on the half-line. The answer is written in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions, which serve as exponential generating functions for generalized Catalan numbers. This can be proved by the fact that the generalized Hankel determinants for these numbers are equal to 1, which is a well-known result in combinatorics. Another method is based on a non-autonomous symmetry reduction consistent with the dynamics. It reduces the lattice equation to a finite-dimensional system and makes it possible to solve the problem for a more general finite-parameter family of initial data.

The Catalan-Qi number of the second kind and a related integral
Li et al. give an integral formula for the Catalan-Qi number of the second kind. They show that this integral can be written as a summation with double factorials. In this paper the integral is reduced to a product of the Catalan number and a hypergeometric function. This hypergeometric function can be written as an associated Legendre polynomial of the first kind. There are also connections with the incomplete Beta function and the Gegenbauer polynomials. In the last section a related integral is calculated.
On some combinatorial sequences associated to invariant theory
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We study the enumerative and analytic properties of some sequences constructed using tensor invariant theory. The octant sequences are constructed from the exceptional Lie group $G_2$ and the quadrant sequences from the special linear group $SL(3)$. In each case we show that the corresponding sequences are related by binomial transforms. The first three octant sequences and the first four quadrant sequences are listed in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). These sequences all have interpretations as enumerating two-dimensional lattice walks but for the octant sequences the boundary conditions are unconventional. These sequences are all P-recursive and we give the corresponding recurrence relations. In all cases the associated differential operators are of third order and have the remarkable property that they can be solved to give closed formulae for the ordinary generating functions in terms of classical Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Moreover, we show that the octant sequences and the quadrant sequences are related by the branching rules for the inclusion of $SL(3)$ in $G_2$.

Power series expansion of Wilf function
In the research, with aid of the Faà di Bruno formula, be virtue of several identities for the Bell polynomials of the second kind, with help of two combinatorial identities, by means of the (logarithmically) complete monotonicity of generating functions of several integer sequences, and in light of the Wronski theorem, the author \begin{enumerate} \item establishes the Taylor power series expansions of several functions involving the inverse (hyperbolic) tangent function; \item finds out the Maclaurin power series expansion of the Wilf function, which is a composite of the inverse tangent, square root, and exponential functions; \item expresses the coefficients in the Maclaurin power series expansion of the Wilf function in terms of the Stirling numbers of the second kind; \item analyzes some properties, including generating functions, limits, positivity, monotonicity, and logarithmic convexity, of the coefficients in the Maclaurin power series expansion of the Wilf function; \item derives a closed-form formula for a sequence of special values of the Gauss hypergeometric function; \item discovers a closed-form formula for a sequence of special values of the Bell polynomials of the second kind; \item presents several infinite series representations of the circular constant and other sequences; \item recovers an asymptotic rational approximation to the circular constant; \item and connects several integer sequences by determinants. \end{enumerate}
Around spin Hurwitz numbers
Published in Lett.Math.Phys. 111 (2021) 124 • View PublicationBIB
We present a review of the spin Hurwitz numbers, which count the ramified coverings with spin structures. They are related to peculiar $Q$ Schur functions, which are actually related to characters of the Sergeev group. This allows one to put the whole story into the modern context of matrix models and integrable hierarchies. Hurwitz partition functions are actually broader than conventional $τ$-functions, but reduce to them in particular circumstances. We explain, how a special $d$-soliton $τ$-functions of KdV and Veselov-Novikov hierarchies generate the spin Hurwitz numbers $H^\pm\left( Γ^r_d \right)$ and $H^\pm\left( Γ^r_d,Δ\right)$. The generating functions of the spin Hurwitz numbers are hypergeometric $τ$-functions of the BKP integrable hierarchy, and we present their fermionic realization. We also explain how one can construct $τ$-functions of this type entirely in terms of the $Q$ Schur functions. An important role in this approach is played by factorization formulas for the $Q$ Schur functions on special loci.

Limits and fluctuations of $p$-adic random matrix products
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. 27, 98 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
We show that singular numbers (also known as invariant factors or Smith normal forms) of products and corners of random matrices over $\mathbb{Q}_p$ are governed by the Hall-Littlewood polynomials, in a structurally identical manner to the classical relations between singular values of complex random matrices and Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions. This implies that the singular numbers of a product of corners of Haar-distributed elements of $\text{GL}_N(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ form a discrete-time Markov chain distributed as a Hall-Littlewood process, with the number of matrices in the product playing the role of time. We give an exact sampling algorithm for the Hall-Littlewood processes which arise by relating them to an interacting particle system similar to PushTASEP. By analyzing the asymptotic behavior of this particle system, we show that the singular numbers of such products obey a law of large numbers and their fluctuations converge dynamically to independent Brownian motions. In the limit of large matrix size, we also show that the analogues of the Lyapunov exponents for matrix products have universal limits within this class of $\text{GL}_N(\mathbb{Z}_p)$ corners.

A Note on Generalized $q$-Difference Equations and Their Applications Involving $q$-Hypergeometric Functions
Published in Symmetry 2020, 12, 1816 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we use two $q$-operators $\mathbb{T}(a,b,c,d,e,yD_x)$ and $\mathbb{E}(a,b,c,d,e,yθ_x)$ to derive two potentially useful generalizations of the $q$-binomial theorem, a set of two extensions of the $q$-Chu-Vandermonde summation formula and two new generalizations of the Andrews-Askey integral by means of the $q$-difference equations. We also briefly describe relevant connections of various special cases and consequences of our main results with a number of known results.

$q$-analogs of sinc sums and integrals
$q$-analogs of sum equals integral relations $\sum_{n\in\mathbb{Z}}f(n)=\int_{-\infty}^\infty f(x)dx$ for sinc functions and binomial coefficients are studied. Such analogs are already known in the context of $q$-hypergeometric series. This paper deals with multibasic `fractional' generalizations that are not $q$-hypergeometric functions.
Novel Results of Two Generalized Classes of Fibonacci and Lucas Polynomials and Their Uses in the Reduction of Some Radicals
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is concerned with developing some new connection formulae between two generalized classes of Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials. All the connection coefficients involve hypergeometric functions of the type $_2F_{1}(z)$, for certain $z$. Several new connection formulae between some famous polynomials such as Fibonacci, Lucas, Pell, Fermat, Pell-Lucas, and Fermat-Lucas polynomials are deduced as special cases of the derived connection formulae. Some of the introduced formulae generalize some of those existing in the literature. As two applications of the derived connection formulae, some new formulae linking some celebrated numbers are given and also some newly closed formulae of certain definite weighted integrals are deduced. Based on using the two generalized classes of Fibonacci and Lucas polynomials, some new reduction formulae of certain odd and even radicals are developed.

A refinement of the binomial distribution using the quantum binomial theorem
Published in Communications in Statistics, Theory and Methods 52 (2023) 294--308 • View PublicationBIB
$q$-analogs of special functions, including hypergeometric functions, play a central role in mathematics and have numerous applications in physics. In the theory of probability, $q$-analogs of various probability distributions have been introduced over the years, including the binomial distribution. Here, I propose a new refinement of the binomial distribution by way of the quantum binomial theorem (also known as the the noncommutative $q$-binomial theorem), where the $q$ is a formal variable in which information related to the sequence of successes and failures in the underlying binomial experiment is encoded in its exponent.

On a Class of Hypergeometric Diagonals
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the diagonal of any finite product of algebraic functions of the form \begin{align*} {(1-x_1-\dots-x_n)^R}, \qquad R\in\mathbb{Q}, \end{align*} is a generalized hypergeometric function, and we provide an explicit description of its parameters. The particular case $(1-x-y)^R/(1-x-y-z)$ corresponds to the main identity of Abdelaziz, Koutschan and Maillard in [AKM2020, §3.2]. Our result is useful in both directions: on the one hand it shows that Christol's conjecture holds true for a large class of hypergeometric functions, on the other hand it allows for a very explicit and general viewpoint on the diagonals of algebraic functions of the type above. Finally, in contrast to [AKM2020], our proof is completely elementary and does not require any algorithmic help.

An Elliptic Hypergeometric Function Approach to Branching Rules

We prove Macdonald-type deformations of a number of well-known classical branching rules by employing identities for elliptic hypergeometric integrals and series. We also propose some conjectural branching rules and allied conjectures exhibiting a novel type of vanishing behaviour involving partitions with empty 2-cores.

Generalized Paley graphs and their complete subgraphs of orders three and four
Published in Res. Math. Sci. 8: 18 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
Let $k \geq 2$ be an integer. Let $q$ be a prime power such that $q \equiv 1 \pmod {k}$ if $q$ is even, or, $q \equiv 1 \pmod {2k}$ if $q$ is odd. The generalized Paley graph of order $q$, $G_k(q)$, is the graph with vertex set $\mathbb{F}_q$ where $ab$ is an edge if and only if ${a-b}$ is a $k$-th power residue. We provide a formula, in terms of finite field hypergeometric functions, for the number of complete subgraphs of order four contained in $G_k(q)$, $\mathcal{K}_4(G_k(q))$, which holds for all $k$. This generalizes the results of Evans, Pulham and Sheehan on the original ($k$=2) Paley graph. We also provide a formula, in terms of Jacobi sums, for the number of complete subgraphs of order three contained in $G_k(q)$, $\mathcal{K}_3(G_k(q))$. In both cases we give explicit determinations of these formulae for small $k$. We show that zero values of $\mathcal{K}_4(G_k(q))$ (resp. $\mathcal{K}_3(G_k(q))$) yield lower bounds for the multicolor diagonal Ramsey numbers $R_k(4)=R(4,4,\cdots,4)$ (resp. $R_k(3)$). We state explicitly these lower bounds for small $k$ and compare to known bounds. We also examine the relationship between both $\mathcal{K}_4(G_k(q))$ and $\mathcal{K}_3(G_k(q))$, when $q$ is prime, and Fourier coefficients of modular forms.

Polynomial traces and elementary symmetric functions in the latent roots of a non-central Wishart matrix
Published in Journal Multivariate Analysis, vol. 179, September (2020) • View PublicationBIB
Hypergeometric functions and zonal polynomials are the tools usually addressed in the literature to deal with the expected value of the elementary symmetric functions in non-central Wishart latent roots. The method here proposed recovers the expected value of these symmetric functions by using the umbral operator applied to the trace of suitable polynomial matrices and their cumulants. The employment of a suitable linear operator in place of hypergeometric functions and zonal polynomials was conjectured by de Waal in 1972. Here we show how the umbral operator accomplishes this task and consequently represents an alternative tool to deal with these symmetric functions. When special formal variables are plugged in the variables, the evaluation through the umbral operator deletes all the monomials in the latent roots except those contributing in the elementary symmetric functions. Cumulants further simplify the computations taking advantage of the convolution structure of the polynomial trace. Open problems are addressed at the end of the paper.

Some properties of generalized hypergeometric Appell polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we present a new real-valued Appell-type polynomial family $A_n^{(k)}(m,x), $ every member of which is expressed by mean of a generalized hypergeometric function. The generating exponential function of this type of polynomials is firstly discovered and the proof that they are of Appell-type ones is given. We present the differential operator formal power series representation as well as an explicit formula over the standard basis, and establish a new identity for the generalized hypergeometric function. Besides, we derive the addition, the multiplication and some other formulas for this polynomial family
Stieltjes moment sequences for pattern-avoiding permutations
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
A small set of combinatorial sequences have coefficients that can be represented as moments of a nonnegative measure on $[0, \infty)$. Such sequences are known as Stieltjes moment sequences. This article focuses on some classical sequences in enumerative combinatorics, denoted $Av(\mathcal{P})$, and counting permutations of $\{1, 2, \ldots, n \}$ that avoid some given pattern $\mathcal{P}$. For increasing patterns $\mathcal{P}=(12\ldots k)$, we recall that the corresponding sequences, $Av(123\ldots k)$, are Stieltjes moment sequences, and we explicitly find the underlying density function, either exactly or numerically, by using the Stieltjes inversion formula as a fundamental tool. We show that the generating functions of the sequences $\, Av(1234)$ and $\, Av(12345)$ correspond, up to simple rational functions, to an order-one linear differential operator acting on a classical modular form given as a pullback of a Gaussian $\, _2F_1$ hypergeometric function, respectively to an order-two linear differential operator acting on the square of a classical modular form given as a pullback of a $\, _2F_1$ hypergeometric function. We demonstrate that the density function for the Stieltjes moment sequence $Av(123\ldots k)$ is closely, but non-trivially, related to the density attached to the distance traveled by a walk in the plane with $k-1$ unit steps in random directions. Finally, we study the challenging case of the $Av(1324)$ sequence and give compelling numerical evidence that this too is a Stieltjes moment sequence. Accepting this, we show how rigorous lower bounds on the growth constant of this sequence can be constructed, which are stronger than existing bounds. A further unproven assumption leads to even better bounds, which can be extrapolated to give an estimate of the (unknown) growth constant.
Periodic Pólya Urns, the Density Method, and Asymptotics of Young Tableaux
Published • View PublicationBIB
Pólya urns are urns where at each unit of time a ball is drawn and replaced with some other balls according to its colour. We introduce a more general model: the replacement rule depends on the colour of the drawn ball and the value of the time ($\operatorname{mod} p$). We extend the work of Flajolet et al. on Pólya urns: the generating function encoding the evolution of the urn is studied by methods of analytic combinatorics. We show that the initial partial differential equations lead to ordinary linear differential equations which are related to hypergeometric functions (giving the exact state of the urns at time n). When the time goes to infinity, we prove that these periodic Pólya urns have asymptotic fluctuations which are described by a product of generalized gamma distributions. With the additional help of what we call the density method (a method which offers access to enumeration and random generation of poset structures), we prove that the law of the south-east corner of a triangular Young tableau follows asymptotically a product of generalized gamma distributions. This allows us to tackle some questions related to the continuous limit of large random Young tableaux and links with random surfaces.
On sequences associated to the invariant theory of rank two simple Lie algebras
We study two families of sequences, listed in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS), which are associated to invariant theory of Lie algebras. For the first family, we prove combinatorially that the sequences A059710 and A108307 are related by a binomial transform. Based on this, we present two independent proofs of a recurrence equation for A059710, which was conjectured by Mihailovs. Besides, we also give a direct proof of Mihailovs' conjecture by the method of algebraic residues. As a consequence, closed formulae for the generating function of sequence A059710 are obtained in terms of classical Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Moreover, we show that sequences in the second family are also related by binomial transforms.

Derivations and identities for Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kinds
In this paper we follow the general approach, proposed earlier by the first author, which is derived from the invariant theory field and provides a way of obtaining of the polynomial identities for any arbitrary polynomial family. We introduce the notion of Chebyshev derivations of the first and second kinds, which is based on the polynomial algebra, and corresponding specific differential operators. We derive the elements of their kernels and prove that any element of the kernel of the derivations defines a polynomial identity satisfied by the Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kinds. Combining elementary methods and combinatorial techniques, we obtain several new polynomial identities involving the Chebyshev polynomials of the both kinds and a special case of the Jacobi polynomials. Using the properties of the generalised hypergeometric function, we specify the Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kinds via the generalised hypergeometric function and, as a consequence, derive the corresponding identities involving the generalised hypergeometric function and the Chebyshev polynomials of the first and second kinds.
Positivity Certificates via Integral Representations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Complete monotonicity is a strong positivity property for real-valued functions on convex cones. It is certified by the kernel of the inverse Laplace transform. We study this for negative powers of hyperbolic polynomials. Here the certificate is the Riesz kernel in Garding's integral representation. The Riesz kernel is a hypergeometric function in the coefficients of the given polynomial. For monomials in linear forms, it is a Gel'fand-Aomoto hypergeometric function, related to volumes of polytopes. We establish complete monotonicity for sufficiently negative powers of elementary symmetric functions. We also show that small negative powers of these polynomials are not completely monotone, proving one direction of a conjecture by Scott and Sokal.
