K-theory Schubert calculus of the affine Grassmannian
Published in Compositio Math. 146 (2010) 811-852 • View PublicationBIB
We construct the Schubert basis of the torus-equivariant K-homology of the affine Grassmannian of a simple algebraic group G, using the K-theoretic NilHecke ring of Kostant and Kumar. This is the K-theoretic analogue of a construction of Peterson in equivariant homology. For the case G = SL_n, the K-homology of the affine Grassmannian is identified with a sub-Hopf algebra of the ring of symmetric functions. The Schubert basis is represented by inhomogeneous symmetric functions, called K-k-Schur functions, whose highest degree term is a k-Schur function. The dual basis in K-cohomology is given by the affine stable Grothendieck polynomials, verifying a conjecture of Lam. In addition, we give a Pieri rule in K-homology. Many of our constructions have geometric interpretations using Kashiwara's thick affine flag manifold.

A Filtration of (q,t)-Catalan numbers
Published in Adv. in Appl. Math. 44 (2010), no. 1, 16--36 • View PublicationBIB
We define new generalizations of (q,t)-Catalan numbers applying nabla operator on k-Schur functions indexed by column partitions. In some special cases, we give a combinatorial interpretation of these numbers using configurations of Dyck paths. In some other special cases, we also interpret these new polynomial as Hilbert series of explicit sub-modules of the alternating diagonal harmonics built using differential operators.

A recursion formula for k-Schur functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Bernstein operators allow to build recursively the Schur functions. We present a recursion formula for k-Schur functions at t=1 based on combinatorial operators that generalize the Bernstein operators. The recursion leads immediately to a combinatorial interpretation for the expansion coefficients of k-Schur functions at t=1 in terms of homogeneous symmetric functions.
Affine insertion and Pieri rules for the affine Grassmannian

We study combinatorial aspects of the Schubert calculus of the affine Grassmannian Gr associated with SL(n,C). Our main results are: 1) Pieri rules for the Schubert bases of H^*(Gr) and H_*(Gr), which expresses the product of a special Schubert class and an arbitrary Schubert class in terms of Schubert classes. 2) A new combinatorial definition for k-Schur functions, which represent the Schubert basis of H_*(Gr). 3) A combinatorial interpretation of the pairing between homology and cohomology of the affine Grassmannian. These results are obtained by interpreting the Schubert bases of Gr combinatorially as generating functions of objects we call strong and weak tableaux, which are respectively defined using the strong and weak orders on the affine symmetric group. We define a bijection called affine insertion, generalizing the Robinson-Schensted Knuth correspondence, which sends certain biwords to pairs of tableaux of the same shape, one strong and one weak. Affine insertion offers a duality between the weak and strong orders which does not seem to have been noticed previously. Our cohomology Pieri rule conjecturally extends to the affine flag manifold, and we give a series of related combinatorial conjectures.

Schubert polynomials for the affine Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
Confirming a conjecture of Mark Shimozono, we identify polynomial representatives for the Schubert classes of the affine Grassmannian as the k-Schur functions in homology and affine Schur functions in cohomology. Our results rely on Kostant and Kumar's nilHecke ring, work of Peterson on the homology of based loops on a compact group, and earlier work of ours on non-commutative k-Schur functions.

A k-tableau characterization of k-Schur functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study k-Schur functions characterized by k-tableaux, proving combinatorial properties such as a k-Pieri rule and a k-conjugation. This new approach relies on developing the theory of k-tableaux, and includes the introduction of a weight-permuting involution on these tableaux that generalizes the Bender-Knuth involution. This work lays the groundwork needed to prove that the set of k-Schur Littlewood-Richardson coefficients contains the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants; structure constants for the quantum cohomology ring.

Quantum cohomology and the k-Schur basis

We prove that structure constants related to Hecke algebras at roots of unity are special cases of k-Littlewood-Richardson coefficients associated to a product of k-Schur functions. As a consequence, both the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants appearing in the quantum cohomology of the Grassmannian, and the fusion coefficients for the WZW conformal field theories associated to \hat{su}(\ell) are shown to be k-Littlewood Richardson coefficients. From this, Mark Shimozono conjectured that the k-Schur functions form the Schubert basis for the homology of the loop Grassmannian, whereas k-Schur coproducts correspond to the integral cohomology of the loop Grassmannian. We introduce dual k-Schur functions defined on weights of k-tableaux that, given Shimozono's conjecture, form the Schubert basis for the cohomology of the loop Grassmannian. We derive several properties of these functions that extend those of skew Schur functions.

Schur function identities, their t-analogs, and k-Schur irreducibility
Published • View PublicationBIB
We obtain general identities for the product of two Schur functions in the case where one of the functions is indexed by a rectangular partition, and give their t-analogs using vertex operators. We study subspaces forming a filtration for the symmetric function space that lends itself to generalizing the theory of Schur functions and also provides a convenient environment for studying the Macdonald polynomials. We use our identities to prove that the vertex operators leave such subspaces invariant. We finish by showing that these operators act simply on the k-Schur functions, thus leading to a concept of irreducibility for these functions.
