Gorenstein simplices with a given $δ$-polynomial
Published in Discrete Mathematics 342, (2019), 111619 • View PublicationBIB
To classify the lattice polytopes with a given $δ$-polynomial is an important open problem in Ehrhart theory. A complete classification of the Gorenstein simplices whose normalized volumes are prime integers is known. In particular, their $δ$-polynomials are of the form $1+t^k+\cdots+t^{(v-1)k}$, where $k$ and $v$ are positive integers. In the present paper, a complete classification of the Gorenstein simplices with the above $δ$-polynomials will be performed, when $v$ is either $p^2$ or $pq$, where $p$ and $q$ are prime integers with $p \neq q$. Moreover, we consider the number of Gorenstein simplices, up to unimodular equivalence, with the expected $δ$-polynomial.

Tensor valuations on lattice polytopes
Published in Adv. Math. 319 (2017), 76-110 • View PublicationBIB
The Ehrhart polynomial and the reciprocity theorems by Ehrhart \& Macdonald are extended to tensor valuations on lattice polytopes. A complete classification is established of tensor valuations of rank up to eight that are equivariant with respect to the special linear group over the integers and translation covariant. Every such valuation is a linear combination of the Ehrhart tensors which is shown to no longer hold true for rank nine.
Smooth polytopes with negative Ehrhart coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
We present examples of smooth lattice polytopes in dimensions 3 and higher where each coefficient of their Ehrhart polynomials that can potentially be negative is indeed negative. This answers a question by Bruns. We also discuss Berline-Vergne valuations as a useful tool in proving Ehrhart positivity results.

Universal inequalities in Ehrhart Theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we show the existence of universal inequalities for the $h^*$-vector of a lattice polytope P, that is, we show that there are relations among the coefficients of the $h^*$-polynomial which are independent of both the dimension and the degree of P. More precisely, we prove that the coefficients $h^*_1$ and $h^*_2$ of the $h^*$-vector $(h^*_0,h^*_1,\ldots,h^*_d)$ of a lattice polytope of any degree satisfy Scott's inequality if $h^*_3=0$.

Reflexive polytopes arising from perfect graphs
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 157(2018), 233--246 • View PublicationBIB
Reflexive polytopes form one of the distinguished classes of lattice polytopes. Especially reflexive polytopes which possess the integer decomposition property are of interest. In the present paper, by virtue of the algebraic technique on Grönbner bases, a new class of reflexive polytopes which possess the integer decomposition property and which arise from perfect graphs will be presented. Furthermore, the Ehrhart $δ$-polynomials of these polytopes will be studied.

Musical intervals under 12-note equal temperament: a geometrical interpretation
Published in Applied Mathematical Sciences, Vol. 11, 2017, no. 3, 101 - 152 • View PublicationBIB
Musical intervals in multiple of semitones under 12-note equal temperament, or more specifically pitch-class subsets of assigned cardinality ($n$-chords) are conceived as positive integer points within an Euclidean $n$-space. The number of distinct $n$-chords is inferred from combinatorics with the extension to $n=0$, involving an Euclidean 0-space. The number of repeating $n$-chords, or points which are turned into themselves during a circular permutation, $T_n$, of their coordinates, is inferred from algebraic considerations. Finally, the total number of $n$-chords and the number of $T_n$ set classes are determined. Palindrome and pseudo palindrome $n$-chords are defined and included among repeating $n$-chords, with regard to an equivalence relation, $T_n/T_nI$, where reflection is added to circular permutation. To this respect, the number of $T_n$ set classes is inferred concerning palindrome and pseudo palindrome $n$-chords and the remaining $n$-chords. The above results are reproduced within the framework of a geometrical interpretation, where positive integer points related to $n$-chords of cardinality, $n$, belong to a regular inclined $n$-hedron, $Ψ_{12}^n$, the vertexes lying on the coordinate axes of a Cartesian orthogonal reference frame at a distance, $x_i=12$, $1\le i\le n$, from the origin. Considering $Ψ_{12}^n$ as special cases of lattice polytopes, the number of related nonnegative integer points is also determined for completeness. A comparison is performed with the results inferred from group theory.

Three-dimensional lattice polytopes with two interior lattice points
We classify the three-dimensional lattice polytopes with two interior lattice points. Up to unimodular equivalence there are 22,673,449 such polytopes. This classification allows us to verify, for this case only, a conjectural upper bound for the volume of a lattice polytope with interior points, and provides strong evidence for new conjectural inequalities on the coefficients of the Ehrhart polynomial in dimension three.
On the maximum dual volume of a canonical Fano polytope
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an upper bound on the volume vol(P*) of a polytope P* dual to a d-dimensional lattice polytope P with exactly one interior lattice point, in each dimension d. This bound, expressed in terms of the Sylvester sequence, is sharp, and is achieved by the dual to a particular reflexive simplex. Our result implies a sharp upper bound on the volume of a d-dimensional reflexive polytope. Translated into toric geometry, this gives a sharp upper bound on the anti-canonical degree $(-K_X)^d$ of a d-dimensional toric Fano variety X with at worst canonical singularities.

Improved bounds on the diameter of lattice polytopes
Published in Acta Math. Hung. 154(2), 457-469 (2018) • View PublicationBIB
We show that the largest possible diameter $δ(d,k)$ of a $d$-dimensional polytope whose vertices have integer coordinates ranging between $0$ and $k$ is at most $kd-\lceil2d/3\rceil$ when $k\geq3$. In addition, we show that $δ(4,3)=8$. This substantiates the conjecture whereby $δ(d,k)$ is at most $\lfloor(k+1)d/2\rfloor$ and is achieved by a Minkowski sum of lattice vectors.
Discrete Mixed Volume and Hodge-Deligne Numbers
Generalizing the famous Bernstein-Kushnirenko Theorem, Khovanskii proved in 1978 a combinatorial formula for the arithmetic genus of the compactification of a generic complete intersection associated to a family of lattice polytopes. Recently, an analogous combinatorial formula, called the discrete mixed volume, was introduced by Bihan and shown to be nonnegative. By making a footnote of Khovanskii in his paper explicit, we interpret this invariant as the (motivic) arithmetic genus of the non-compact generic complete intersection associated to the family of lattice polytopes.
$h^\ast$-polynomials of zonotopes
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 371 (2019), 2021-2042 • View PublicationBIB
The Ehrhart polynomial of a lattice polytope $P$ encodes information about the number of integer lattice points in positive integral dilates of $P$. The $h^\ast$-polynomial of $P$ is the numerator polynomial of the generating function of its Ehrhart polynomial. A zonotope is any projection of a higher dimensional cube. We give a combinatorial description of the $h^\ast$-polynomial of a lattice zonotope in terms of refined descent statistics of permutations and prove that the $h^\ast$-polynomial of every lattice zonotope has only real roots and therefore unimodal coefficients. Furthermore, we present a closed formula for the $h^\ast$-polynomial of a zonotope in matroidal terms which is analogous to a result by Stanley (1991) on the Ehrhart polynomial. Our results hold not only for $h^\ast$-polynomials but carry over to general combinatorial positive valuations. Moreover, we give a complete description of the convex hull of all $h^\ast$-polynomials of zonotopes in a given dimension: it is a simplicial cone spanned by refined Eulerian polynomials.

Ehrhart Theory of Spanning Lattice Polytopes
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN 2018, no. 19, 5947-5973 • View PublicationBIB
A lattice polytope is called spanning if its lattice points affinely span the ambient lattice. We show as a corollary to a general result in the Ehrhart theory of lattice polytopes that the $h^*$-vector of a spanning lattice polytope has no gaps, i. e., $h^*_i =0$ implies $h^*_{i+1}=0$. This generalizes a recent result by Blekherman, Smith, and Velasco, and implies a polyhedral consequence of the Eisenbud-Goto conjecture. We also discuss how this relates to unimodality questions of lattice polytopes and previously achieved decomposition results on lattice polytopes of given degree.

Detecting the Integer Decomposition Property and Ehrhart Unimodality in Reflexive Simplices
Published • View PublicationBIB
A long-standing open conjecture in combinatorics asserts that a Gorenstein lattice polytope with the integer decomposition property (IDP) has a unimodal (Ehrhart) $h^\ast$-polynomial. This conjecture can be viewed as a strengthening of a previously disproved conjecture which stated that any Gorenstein lattice polytope has a unimodal $h^\ast$-polynomial. The first counterexamples to unimodality for Gorenstein lattice polytopes were given in even dimensions greater than five by Musta{ţ}{ǎ} and Payne, and this was extended to all dimensions greater than five by Payne. While there exist numerous examples in support of the conjecture that IDP reflexives are $h^\ast$-unimodal, its validity has not yet been considered for families of reflexive lattice simplices that closely generalize Payne's counterexamples. The main purpose of this work is to prove that the former conjecture does indeed hold for a natural generalization of Payne's examples. The second purpose of this work is to extend this investigation to a broader class of lattice simplices, for which we present new results and open problems.

Signs of the Leading Coefficients of the Resultant
Published in Geometric and Functional Analysis 27 (2017) 33-66 • View PublicationBIB
We construct a certain $\F_2$-valued analogue of the mixed volume of lattice polytopes. This 2-mixed volume cannot be defined as a polarization of any kind of an additive measure, or characterized by any kind of its monotonicity properties, because neither of the two makes sense over $\F_2$. In this sense, the convex-geometric nature of the 2-mixed volume remains unclear. On the other hand, the 2-mixed volume seems to be no less natural and useful than the classical mixed volume -- in particular, it also plays an important role in algebraic geometry. As an illustration of this role, we obtain a closed-form expression in terms of the 2-mixed volume to compute the signs of the leading coefficients of the resultant, which were by now explicitly computed only for some special cases.

Self dual reflexive simplices with Eulerian polynomials
Published in Graphs and Combinatorics (2017) 33: 1401-1404 • View PublicationBIB
A lattice polytope $\mathcal{P}$ is called reflexive if its dual $\mathcal{P}^\vee$ is a lattice polytope. The property that $\mathcal{P}$ is unimodularly equivalent to $\mathcal{P}^\vee$ does not hold in general, and in fact there are few examples of such polytopes. In this note, we introduce a new reflexive simplex $Q_n$ which has this property. Additionally, we show that $δ$-polynomalial of $Q_n$ is the Eulerian polynomial and show the existence of a regular, flag, unimodular triangulation.
The Finiteness Threshold Width of Lattice Polytopes
Published in Transactions of the Amer. Math. Soc. Ser. B 8 (April 2021), 399-419 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that in each dimension $d$ there is a constant $w^\infty(d)\in \mathbb{N}$ such that for every $n\in \mathbb{N}$ all but finitely many $d$-polytopes with $n$ lattice points have width at most $w^\infty(d)$. We call $w^\infty(d)$ the finiteness threshold width and show that $d-2 \le w^\infty(d)\le O^*\left( d^{4/3}\right)$. Blanco and Santos determined the value $w^\infty(3)=1$. Here, we establish $w^\infty(4)=2$. This implies, in particular, that there are only finitely many empty $4$-simplices of width larger than two. The main tool in our proofs is the study of $d$-dimensional lifts of hollow $(d-1)$-polytopes.

Ehrhart series of fractional stable set polytopes of finite graphs
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 22 (2018), 563-573 • View PublicationBIB
The fractional stable set polytope ${\rm FRAC}(G)$ of a simple graph $G$ with $d$ vertices is a rational polytope that is the set of nonnegative vectors $(x_1,\ldots,x_d)$ satisfying $x_i+x_j\le 1$ for every edge $(i,j)$ of $G$. In this paper we show that (i) The $δ$-vector of a lattice polytope $2 {\rm FRAC}(G)$ is alternatingly increasing; (ii) The Ehrhart ring of ${\rm FRAC}(G)$ is Gorenstein; (iii) The coefficients of the numerator of the Ehrhart series of ${\rm FRAC}(G)$ are symmetric, unimodal and computed by the $δ$-vector of $2 {\rm FRAC}(G)$.

Enumeration of lattice 3-polytopes by their number of lattice points
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. 60:3 (2018), 756-800 • View PublicationBIB
We develop a procedure for the complete computational enumeration of lattice $3$-polytopes of width larger than one, up to any given number of lattice points. We also implement an algorithm for doing this and enumerate those with at most eleven lattice points (there are 216,453 of them). In order to achieve this we prove that if $P$ is a lattice 3-polytope of width larger than one and with at least seven lattice points then it fits in one of three categories that we call boxed, spiked and merged. Boxed polytopes have at most 11 lattice points; in particular they are finitely many, and we enumerate them completely with computer help. Spiked polytopes are infinitely many but admit a quite precise description (and enumeration). Merged polytopes are computed as a union (merging) of two polytopes of width larger than one and strictly smaller number of lattice points.

Counting lattice points in free sums of polytopes
Published in J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A 151 (2017), 51-60 • View PublicationBIB
We show how to compute the Ehrhart polynomial of the free sum of two lattice polytopes containing the origin $P$ and $Q$ in terms of the enumerative combinatorics of $P$ and $Q$. This generalizes work of Beck, Jayawant, McAllister, and Braun, and follows from the observation that the weighted $h^*$-polynomial is multiplicative with respect to the free sum. We deduce that given a lattice polytope $P$ containing the origin, the problem of computing the number of lattice points in all rational dilates of $P$ is equivalent to the problem of computing the number of lattice points in all integer dilates of all free sums of $P$ with itself.

Volume, facets and dual polytopes of twinned chain polytopes
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 22(2018), 875--884 • View PublicationBIB
Let $(P,\leq_P)$ and $(Q,\leq_Q)$ be finite partially ordered sets with $|P|=|Q|=d$, and $\mathcal{C}(P) \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ and $\mathcal{C}(Q) \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ their chain polytopes. The twinned chain polytope of $P$ and $Q$ is the lattice polytope $Γ(\mathcal{C}(P),\mathcal{C}(Q)) \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ which is the convex hull of $\mathcal{C}(P) \cup (-\mathcal{C}(Q))$. It is known that twinned chain polytopes are Gorenstein Fano polytopes with the integer decomposition property. In the present paper, we study combinatorial properties of twinned chain polytopes. First, we will give the formula of the volume of twinned chain polytopes in terms of the underlying partially ordered sets. Second, we will identify the facet-supporting hyperplanes of twinned chain polytopes in terms of the underlying partially ordered sets. Finally, we will provide the vertex representations of the dual polytopes of twinned chain polytopes.
