Continued Classification of 3D Lattice Walks in the Positive Octant
Published • View PublicationBIB
We continue the investigations of lattice walks in the three dimensional lattice restricted to the positive octant. We separate models which clearly have a D-finite generating function from models for which there is no reason to expect that their generating function is D-finite, and we isolate a small set of models whose nature remains unclear and requires further investigation. For these, we give some experimental results about their asymptotic behaviour, based on the inspection of a large number of initial terms. At least for some of them, the guessed asymptotic form seems to tip the balance towards non-D-finiteness.
The enumeration of generalized Tamari intervals
Published in European J. Combin. 61C (2017) 69-84 • View PublicationBIB
Let $v$ be a grid path made of north and east steps. The lattice $\rm{T{\scriptsize AM}}(v)$, based on all grid paths weakly above $v$ and sharing the same endpoints as $v$, was introduced by Préville-Ratelle and Viennot (2014) and corresponds to the usual Tamari lattice in the case $v=(NE)^n$. Our main contribution is that the enumeration of intervals in $\rm{T{\scriptsize AM}}(v)$, over all $v$ of length $n$, is given by $\frac{2 (3n+3)!}{(n+2)! (2n+3)!}$. This formula was first obtained by Tutte(1963) for the enumeration of non-separable planar maps. Moreover, we give an explicit bijection from these intervals in $\rm{T{\scriptsize AM}}(v)$ to non-separable planar maps.
Slicings of parallelogram polyominoes: Catalan, Schröder, Baxter, and other sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a new succession rule (i.e. generating tree) associated with Schröder numbers, that interpolates between the known succession rules for Catalan and Baxter numbers. We define Schröder and Baxter generalizations of parallelogram polyominoes, called slicings, which grow according to these succession rules. In passing, we also exhibit Schröder subclasses of Baxter classes, namely a Schröder subset of triples of non-intersecting lattice paths, a new Schröder subset of Baxter permutations, and a new Schröder subset of mosaic floorplans. Finally, we define two families of subclasses of Baxter slicings: the $m$-skinny slicings and the $m$-row-restricted slicings, for $m \in \mathbb{N}$. Using functional equations and the kernel method, their generating functions are computed in some special cases, and we conjecture that they are algebraic for any $m$.

Counting quadrant walks via Tutte's invariant method (extended abstract)
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, April 22, 2020, DMTCS Proceedings, 28th International Conference on Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics (FPSAC 2016) • View PublicationBIB
In the 1970s, Tutte developed a clever algebraic approach, based on certain "invariants" , to solve a functional equation that arises in the enumeration of properly colored triangulations. The enumeration of plane lattice walks confined to the first quadrant is governed by similar equations, and has led in the past decade to a rich collection of attractive results dealing with the nature (algebraic, D-finite or not) of the associated generating function, depending on the set of allowed steps. We first adapt Tutte's approach to prove (or reprove) the algebraicity of all quadrant models known or conjectured to be algebraic (with one small exception). This includes Gessel's famous model, and the first proof ever found for one model with weighted steps. To be applicable, the method requires the existence of two rational functions called invariant and decoupling function respectively. When they exist, algebraicity comes out (almost) automatically. Then, we move to an analytic viewpoint which has already proved very powerful, leading in particular to integral expressions of the generating function in the non-D-finite cases, as well as to proofs of non-D-finiteness. We develop in this context a weaker notion of invariant. Now all quadrant models have invariants, and for those that have in addition a decoupling function, we obtain integral-free expressions of the generating function, and a proof that this series is differentially algebraic (that is, satisfies a non-linear differential equation).

On the Dual Ramsey Property for Finite Distributive Lattices
The class of finite distributive lattices, as many other classes of structures in everyday use, does not have the Ramsey property. It is quite common, though, that after expanding the structures with appropriatelly chosen linear orders the resulting class has the Ramsey property. So, one might expect that a similar result holds for the class of all finite distributive lattices. Surprisingly, Kechris and Sokic have proved in 2012 that this is not the case: no expansion of the class of finite distributive lattices by linear orders satisfies the Ramsey property. In this paper we prove that the class of finite distributive lattices does not have the dual Ramsey property either. However, we are able to derive a dual Ramsey theorem for finite distributive lattices endowed with a particular linear order.

Sums of sets of lattice points and unimodular coverings of polytopes
Published in Acta Math. Hungar. 149 (2016), 233--237 • View PublicationBIB
If $P$ is a lattice polytope (that is, the convex hull of a finite set of lattice points in $\mathbf{R}^n$), then every sum of $h$ lattice points in $P$ is a lattice point in the $h$-fold sumset $hP$. However, a lattice point in the $h$-fold sumset $hP$ is not necessarily the sum of $h$ lattice points in $P$. It is proved that if the polytope $P$ is a union of unimodular simplices, then every lattice point in the $h$-fold sumset $hP$ is the sum of $h$ lattice points in $P$.
Mod-$φ$ convergence: Approximation of discrete measures and harmonic analysis on the torus
Published in Annales de l'Institut Fourier, Volume 70 (2020) no. 3, pp. 1115-1197 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we relate the framework of mod-$φ$ convergence to the construction of approximation schemes for lattice-distributed random variables. The point of view taken here is that of Fourier analysis in the Wiener algebra, allowing the computation of asymptotic equivalents in the local, Kolmogorov and total variation distances. By using signed measures instead of probability measures, we are able to construct better approximations of discrete lattice distributions than the standard Poisson approximation. This theory applies to various examples arising from combinatorics and number theory: number of cycles in (possibly coloured) permutations, number of prime divisors (possibly within different residue classes) of a random integer, number of irreducible factors of a random polynomial, etc. One advantage of the approach developed in this paper is that it allows us to deal with approximations in higher dimensions as well. In this setting, we can explicitly see the influence of the correlations between the components of the random vectors in our asymptotic formulas.

Difference operators for partitions under the Littlewood decomposition
Published • View PublicationBIB
The concept of $t$-difference operator for functions of partitions is introduced to prove a generalization of Stanley's theorem on polynomiality of Plancherel averages of symmetric functions related to contents and hook lengths. Our extension uses a generalization of the notion of Plancherel measure, based on walks in the Young lattice with steps given by the addition of $t$-hooks. It is well-known that the hook lengths of multiples of $t$ can be characterized by the Littlewood decomposition. Our study gives some further information on the contents and hook lengths of other congruence classes modulo $t$.

Asymptotics of lattice walks via analytic combinatorics in several variables
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the enumeration of walks on the two dimensional non-negative integer lattice with short steps. Up to isomorphism there are 79 unique two dimensional models to consider, and previous work in this area has used the kernel method, along with a rigorous computer algebra approach, to show that 23 of the 79 models admit D-finite generating functions. In 2009, Bostan and Kauers used Padé-Hermite approximants to guess differential equations which these 23 generating functions satisfy, in the process guessing asymptotics of their coefficient sequences. In this article we provide, for the first time, a complete rigorous verification of these guesses. Our technique is to use the kernel method to express 19 of the 23 generating functions as diagonals of tri-variate rational functions and apply the methods of analytic combinatorics in several variables (the remaining 4 models have algebraic generating functions and can thus be handled by univariate techniques). This approach also shows the link between combinatorial properties of the models and features of its asymptotics such as asymptotic and polynomial growth factors. In addition, we give expressions for the number of walks returning to the x-axis, the y-axis, and the origin, proving recently conjectured asymptotics of Bostan, Chyzak, van Hoeij, Kauers, and Pech.

Square lattice walks avoiding a quadrant
Published in J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 144 (2016) 37-79 • View PublicationBIB
In the past decade, a lot of attention has been devoted to the enumera-tion of walks with prescribed steps confined to a convex cone. In two dimensions, this means counting walks in the first quadrant of the plane (possibly after a linear transformation). But what about walks in non-convex cones? We investigate the two most natural cases: first, square lattice walks avoiding the negative quadrant Q 1 = {(i, j) : i \textless{} 0 and j \textless{} 0}, and then, square lattice walks avoiding the West quadrant Q 2 = {(i, j) : i \textless{} j and i \textless{} --j}. In both cases, the generating function that counts walks starting from the origin is found to differ from a simple D-finite series by an algebraic one. We also obtain closed form expressions for the number of n-step walks ending at certain prescribed endpoints, as a sum of three hypergeometric terms. One of these terms already appears in the enumeration of square lattice walks confined to the cone {(i, j) : i +j $\ge$ 0 and j $\ge$ 0}, known as Gessel's walks. In fact, the enumeration of Gessel's walks follows, by the reflection principle, from the enumeration of walks starting from (--1, 0) and avoiding Q 1. Their generating function turns out to be purely algebraic (as the generating function of Gessel's walks). Another approach to Gessel's walks consists in counting walks that start from (--1, 1) and avoid the West quadrant Q 2. The associated generating function is D-finite but transcendental.

On the Beck-Fiala Conjecture for Random Set Systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the Beck-Fiala conjecture, we study discrepancy bounds for random sparse set systems. Concretely, these are set systems $(X,Σ)$, where each element $x \in X$ lies in $t$ randomly selected sets of $Σ$, where $t$ is an integer parameter. We provide new bounds in two regimes of parameters. We show that when $|Σ| \ge |X|$ the hereditary discrepancy of $(X,Σ)$ is with high probability $O(\sqrt{t \log t})$; and when $|X| \gg |Σ|^t$ the hereditary discrepancy of $(X,Σ)$ is with high probability $O(1)$. The first bound combines the Lov{á}sz Local Lemma with a new argument based on partial matchings; the second follows from an analysis of the lattice spanned by sparse vectors.

Mixing time and eigenvalues of the abelian sandpile Markov chain
Published • View PublicationBIB
The abelian sandpile model defines a Markov chain whose states are integer-valued functions on the vertices of a simple connected graph $G$. By viewing this chain as a (nonreversible) random walk on an abelian group, we give a formula for its eigenvalues and eigenvectors in terms of `multiplicative harmonic functions' on the vertices of $G$. We show that the spectral gap of the sandpile chain is within a constant factor of the length of the shortest non-integer vector in the dual Laplacian lattice, while the mixing time is at most a constant times the smoothing parameter of the Laplacian lattice. We find a surprising inverse relationship between the spectral gap of the sandpile chain and that of simple random walk on $G$: If the latter has a sufficiently large spectral gap, then the former has a small gap! In the case where $G$ is the complete graph on $n$ vertices, we show that the sandpile chain exhibits cutoff at time $\frac{1}{4π^{2}}n^{3}\log n$.

A Bijection on Classes Enumerated by the Schröder Numbers
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 18 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2015, Permutation Patterns (July 19, 2017) dmtcs:1326 • View PublicationBIB
We consider a sorting machine consisting of two stacks in series where the first stack has the added restriction that entries in the stack must be in decreasing order from top to bottom. The class of permutations sortable by this machine are known to be enumerated by the Schröder numbers. In this paper, we give a bijection between these sortable permutations of length $n$ and Schröder paths -- the lattice paths from $(0,0)$ to $(n-1,n-1)$ composed of East steps $(1,0)$, North steps $(0,1)$, and Diagonal steps $(1,1)$ that travel weakly below the line $y=x$.

Twisted Brauer monoids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the structure of the twisted Brauer monoid $\mathcal B_n^τ$, comparing and contrasting it to the structure of the (untwisted) Brauer monoid $\mathcal B_n$. We characterise Green's relations and pre-orders on $\mathcal B_n^τ$, describe the lattice of ideals, and give necessary and sufficient conditions for an ideal to be idempotent-generated. We obtain formulae for the rank (smallest size of a generating set) and (where applicable) the idempotent rank (smallest size of an idempotent generating set) of each principal ideal; in particular, when an ideal is idempotent-generated, its rank and idempotent rank are equal. As an application of our results, we also describe the idempotent-generated subsemigroup of $\mathcal B_n^τ$ (which is not an ideal) as well as the singular ideal of $\mathcal B_n^τ$ (which is neither principal nor idempotent-generated), and we deduce a result of Maltcev and Mazorchuk that the singular part of the Brauer monoid $\mathcal B_n$ is idempotent-generated.
Spherical 2-designs and lattices from Abelian groups
Published in Discrete Comput. Geom. 61 (2019), no. 1, 123-135 • Search Publication
We consider lattices generated by finite Abelian groups. We prove that such a lattice is strongly eutactic, which means the normalized minimal vectors of the lattice form a spherical 2-design, if and only if the group is of odd order or if it is a power of the group of order 2. This result also yields a criterion for the appropriately normalized minimal vectors to constitute a uniform normalized tight frame. Further, our result combined with a recent theorem of R. Bacher produces (via the classical Voronoi criterion) a new infinite family of extreme lattices. Additionally, we investigate the structure of the automorphism groups of these lattices, strengthening our previous results in this direction.

Trees on hyperbolic honeycombs
Published in Miskolc Math. Notes, Vol.16/1 (2015) 353-360 • Search Publication
In the hyperbolic plane there are infinite regular lattices. From a fix vertex of a lattice tree graphs can be constructed recursively to the next layers with edges of the lattice. In this article we examine the properties of the growing of trees and the probabilities of length of trees considering the vertices on level i.
Pattern avoidance in forests of binary shrubs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, Vol. 18 no. 2, Permutation Patterns 2015, Permutation Patterns (July 21, 2016) dmtcs:1322 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate pattern avoidance in permutations satisfying some additional restrictions. These are naturally considered in terms of avoiding patterns in linear extensions of certain forest-like partially ordered sets, which we call binary shrub forests. In this context, we enumerate forests avoiding patterns of length three. In four of the five non-equivalent cases, we present explicit enumerations by exhibiting bijections with certain lattice paths bounded above by the line $y=\ell x$, for some $\ell\in\mathbb{Q}^+$, one of these being the celebrated Duchon's club paths with $\ell=2/3$. In the remaining case, we use the machinery of analytic combinatorics to determine the minimal polynomial of its generating function, and deduce its growth rate.

On Computing the Galois Lattice of Bipartite Distance Hereditary Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The class of Bipartite Distance Hereditary (BDH) graphs is the intersection between bipartite domino-free and chordal bipartite graphs.\ Graphs in both the latter classes have linearly many maximal bicliques, implying the existence of polynomial-time algorithms for computing the associated Galois lattice.\ Such a lattice can indeed be built in $O(m\times n)$ worst case-time for a domino-free graph with $m$ edges and $n$ vertices.\ In this paper we give a sharp estimate on the number of the maximal bicliques of BDH graphs and exploit such result to give an $O(m)$ worst case time algorithm for computing the Galois lattice of BDH graphs. By relying on the fact that neighborhoods of vertices of BDH graphs can be realized as directed paths in a arborescence, we give an $O(n)$ worst-case space and time encoding of both the input graph and its Galois lattice, provided that the reverse of a Bandelt and Mulder building sequence is given.

Relativised homomorphism preservation at the finite level
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we investigate the status of the homomorphism preservation property amongst restricted classes of finite relational structures and algebraic structures. We show that there are many homomorphism-closed classes of finite lattices that are definable by a first-order sentence but not by existential positive sentences, demonstrating the failure of the homomorphism preservation property for lattices at the finite level. In contrast to the negative results for algebras, we establish a finite-level relativised homomorphism preservation theorem in the relational case. More specifically, we give a complete finite-level characterisation of first-order definable finitely generated anti-varieties relative to classes of relational structures definable by sentences of some general forms. When relativisation is dropped, this gives a fresh proof of Atserias's characterisation of first-order definable constraint satisfaction problems over a fixed template, a well known special case of Rossman's Finite Homomorphism Preservation Theorem.
