Tropical curves in sandpiles
Published in Comptes Rendus Mathematique, Volume 354, Issue 2, 1 February 2016, Pages 125-130 • View PublicationBIB
We study a sandpile model on the set of the lattice points in a large lattice polygon. A small perturbation $ψ$ of the maximal stable state $μ\equiv 3$ is obtained by adding extra grains at several points. It appears, that the result $ψ^\circ$ of the relaxation of $ψ$ coincides with $μ$ almost everywhere; the set where $ψ^\circ\ne μ$ is called the deviation locus. The scaling limit of the deviation locus turns out to be a distinguished tropical curve passing through the perturbation points.

Critical surface of the hexagonal polygon model
Published • View PublicationBIB
The hexagonal polygon model arises in a natural way via a transformation of the 1-2 model on the hexagonal lattice, and it is related to the high temperature expansion of the Ising model. There are three types of edge, and three corresponding parameters $α,β,γ>0$. By studying the long-range order of a certain two-edge correlation function, it is shown that the parameter space $(0,\infty)^3$ may be divided into subcritical and supercritical regions, separated by critical surfaces satisfying an explicitly known formula. This result complements earlier work on the Ising model and the 1-2 model. The proof uses the Pfaffian representation of Fisher, Kasteleyn, and Temperley for the counts of dimers on planar graphs.

Lattice Paths, Young Tableaux, and Weight Multiplicities
Published • View PublicationBIB
For $\ell \geq 1$ and $k \geq 2$, we consider certain admissible sequences of $k-1$ lattice paths in a colored $\ell \times \ell$ square. We show that the number of such admissible sequences of lattice paths is given by the sum of squares of the number of standard Young tableaux of partitions of $\ell$ with height $\leq k$, which is also the number of $(k+1)k\cdots21$-avoiding permutations of $\{1, 2, \ldots, \ell\}$. Finally, we apply this result to the representation theory of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat{sl}(n)$ and show that this quantity gives the multiplicity of certain maximal dominant weights in the irreducible module $V(kΛ_0)$.
Deterministic Abelian Sandpile and square-triangle tilings
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Abelian Sandpile Model, seen as a deterministic lattice automaton, on two-dimensional periodic graphs generates complex regular patterns displaying (fractal) self-similarity. In particular, on a variety of lattices and initial conditions, at all sizes, there appears what we call an exact Sierpinski structure: the volume is filled with periodic patterns, glued together along straight lines, with the topology of a triangular Sierpinski gasket. Various lattices (square, hexagonal, kagome,...), initial conditions, and toppling rules show Sierpinski structures which are apparently unrelated and involve different mechanisms. As will be shown elsewhere, all these structures fall under one roof, and are in fact different projections of a unique mechanism pertinent to a family of deterministic surfaces in a 4-dimensional lattice. This short note gives a description of this surface, and of the combinatorics associated to its construction.
Generating functions and triangulations for lecture hall cones
Published in SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics 30 (2016), no. 3, 1470-1479 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the arithmetic-geometric structure of the lecture hall cone \[ L_n \ := \ \left\{λ\in \mathbb{R}^n: \, 0\leq \frac{λ_1}{1}\leq \frac{λ_2}{2}\leq \frac{λ_3}{3}\leq \cdots \leq \frac{λ_n}{n}\right\} . \] We show that $L_n$ is isomorphic to the cone over the lattice pyramid of a reflexive simplex whose Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomial is given by the $(n-1)$st Eulerian polynomial, and prove that lecture hall cones admit regular, flag, unimodular triangulations. After explicitly describing the Hilbert basis for $L_n$, we conclude with observations and a conjecture regarding the structure of unimodular triangulations of $L_n$, including connections between enumerative and algebraic properties of $L_n$ and cones over unit cubes.

Toric $g$-polynomials of hook shape lattice Path Matroid Polytopes and product of simplices
It is known that a lattice path matroid polytope can be associated with two given noncrossing lattice paths on $\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}$ with the same end points. In this short note we give explicit formulae for the $f$-vector, toric $f$- and $g$-polynomials of a lattice path matroid polytope when two boundary paths enclose a hook shape.

Matrix ansatz and combinatorics of the $k$-species PASEP
We study a generalization of the partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP) in which there are $k$ species of particles of varying weights hopping right and left on a one-dimensional lattice of $n$ sites with open boundaries. In this process, only the heaviest particle type can enter on the left of the lattice and exit from the right of the lattice. In the bulk, two adjacent particles of different weights can swap places. We prove a Matrix Ansatz for this model, in which different rates for the swaps are allowed. Based on this Matrix Ansatz, we define a combinatorial object which we call a $k$-rhombic alternative tableau, which we use to give formulas for the steady state probabilities of the states of this $k$-species PASEP. We also describe a Markov chain on the 2-rhombic alternative tableaux that projects to the 2-species PASEP.

A generalized Goulden-Jackson cluster method and lattice path enumeration
Published in Discrete Math. 341(2): 358-379, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
The Goulden-Jackson cluster method is a powerful tool for obtaining generating functions for counting words in a free monoid by occurrences of a set of subwords. We introduce a generalization of the cluster method for monoid networks, which generalize the combinatorial framework of free monoids. As a sample application of the generalized cluster method, we compute bivariate and multivariate generating functions counting Motzkin paths---both with height bounded and unbounded---by statistics corresponding to the number of occurrences of various subwords, yielding both closed-form and continued fraction formulae.

Permutation totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions
Published in Ann. Comb. 22 (2018), no. 3, 641-671 • View PublicationBIB
Alternating sign matrices and totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions are equinumerous sets of objects for which no explicit bijection is known. In this paper, we identify a subset of totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions corresponding to permutations by giving a statistic-preserving bijection to permutation matrices, which are a subset of alternating sign matrices. We use this bijection to define a new partial order on permutations, and prove this new poset contains both the Tamari lattice and the Catalan distributive lattice as subposets. We also study a new partial order on totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions arising from this perspective and show that this is a distributive lattice related to Bruhat order when restricted to permutations.

Refined Cauchy/Littlewood identities and six-vertex model partition functions: III. Deformed bosons
Published in Advances in Mathematics, Volume 299, 20 August 2016, Pages 543-600 • View PublicationBIB
We study Hall-Littlewood polynomials using an integrable lattice model of $t$-deformed bosons. Working with row-to-row transfer matrices, we review the construction of Hall-Littlewood polynomials (of the $A_n$ root system) within the framework of this model. Introducing appropriate double-row transfer matrices, we extend this formalism to Hall-Littlewood polynomials based on the $BC_n$ root system, and obtain a new combinatorial formula for them. We then apply our methods to prove a series of refined Cauchy and Littlewood identities involving Hall-Littlewood polynomials. The last two of these identities are new, and relate infinite sums over hyperoctahedrally symmetric Hall-Littlewood polynomials with partition functions of the six-vertex model on finite domains.
Helly numbers of Algebraic Subsets of $\mathbb R^d$
We study $S$-convex sets, which are the geometric objects obtained as the intersection of the usual convex sets in $\mathbb R^d$ with a proper subset $S\subset \mathbb R^d$. We contribute new results about their $S$-Helly numbers. We extend prior work for $S=\mathbb R^d$, $\mathbb Z^d$, and $\mathbb Z^{d-k}\times\mathbb R^k$; we give sharp bounds on the $S$-Helly numbers in several new cases. We considered the situation for low-dimensional $S$ and for sets $S$ that have some algebraic structure, in particular when $S$ is an arbitrary subgroup of $\mathbb R^d$ or when $S$ is the difference between a lattice and some of its sublattices. By abstracting the ingredients of Lovász method we obtain colorful versions of many monochromatic Helly-type results, including several colorful versions of our own results.
Non-commutative lattice problems

We consider several subgroup-related algorithmic questions in groups, modeled after the classic computational lattice problems, and study their computational complexity. We find polynomial time solutions to problems like finding a subgroup element closest to a given group element, or finding a shortest non-trivial element of a subgroup in the case of nilpotent groups, and a large class of surface groups and Coxeter groups. We also provide polynomial time algorithm to compute geodesics in given generators of a subgroup of a free group.

Plane partitions with bounded size of parts and biorthogonal polynomials
Nice formulae for plane partitions with bounded size of parts (or boxed plane partitions), which generalize the norm-trace generating function by Stanley and the trace generating function by Gansner, are exhibited. The derivation of the nice formulae is based on lattice path combinatorics of biorthogonal polynomials, especially of the little $q$-Laguerre polynomials and a generalization of the little $q$-Laguerre polynomials. A summation formula which generalizes the $q$-Chu-Vandermonde identity is also shown and utilized to prove the orthogonality of the generalized little $q$-Laguerre polynomials.
Algebraic structures defined on $m$-Dyck paths
We introduce natural binary set-theoretical products on the set of all $m$-Dyck paths, which led us to define a non-symmetric algebraic operad $\Dy^m$, described on the vector space spanned by $m$-Dyck paths. Our construction is closely related to the $m$-Tamari lattice, so the products defining $\Dy^m$ are given by intervals in this lattice. For $m=1$, we recover the notion of dendriform algebra introduced by J.-L. Loday in \cite{Lod}, and there exists a natural operad morphism from the operad ${\mbox {\it Ass}}$ of associative algebras into the operad $\Dy^m$, consequently $\Dy ^m$ is a Hopf operad. We give a description of the coproduct in terms of $m$-Dyck paths in the last section. As an additional result, for any composition of $m+1\geq 2$ with $r+1$ parts, we get a functor from the category of $\Dy ^m$ algebras into the category of $\Dy ^r$ algebras.

Difference operators for partitions and some applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula on hook lengths, the first author conjectured that the Plancherel average of the $2k$-th power sum of hook lengths of partitions with size $n$ is always a polynomial of $n$ for any $k\in \mathbb{N}$. This conjecture was generalized and proved by Stanley (Ramanujan J., 23(1--3): 91--105, 2010). In this paper, inspired by the work of Stanley and Olshanski on the differential poset of Young lattice, we study the properties of two kinds of difference operators $D$ and $D^-$ defined on functions of partitions. Even though the calculations for higher orders of $D$ are extremely complex, we prove that several well-known families of functions of partitions are annihilated by a power of the difference operator $D$. As an application, our results lead to several generalizations of classic results on partitions, including the marked hook formula, Stanley Theorem, Okada-Panova hook length formula, and Fujii-Kanno-Moriyama-Okada content formula. We insist that the Okada constants $K_r$ arise directly from the computation for a single partition $λ$, without the summation ranging over all partitions of size~$n$.

Lattices related to extensions of presentations of transversal matroids
Published in The Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 2017 • View PublicationBIB
For a presentation $\mathcal{A}$ of a transversal matroid $M$, we study the set $T_{\mathcal{A}}$ of single-element transversal extensions of $M$ that have presentations that extend $\mathcal{A}$; we order these extensions by the weak order. We show that $T_{\mathcal{A}}$ is a distributive lattice, and that each finite distributive lattice is isomorphic to $T_{\mathcal{A}}$ for some presentation $\mathcal{A}$ of some transversal matroid $M$. We show that $T_{\mathcal{A}}\cap T_{\mathcal{B}}$, for any two presentations $\mathcal{A}$ and $\mathcal{B}$ of $M$, is a sublattice of both $T_{\mathcal{A}}$ and $T_{\mathcal{B}}$. We prove sharp upper bounds on $|T_{\mathcal{A}}|$ for presentations $\mathcal{A}$ of rank less than $r(M)$ in the order on presentations; we also give a sharp upper bound on $|T_{\mathcal{A}}\cap T_{\mathcal{B}}|$. The main tool we introduce to study $T_{\mathcal{A}}$ is the lattice $L_{\mathcal{A}}$ of closed sets of a certain closure operator on the lattice of subsets of $\{1,2,\ldots,r(M)\}$.

Polyhedral geometry, supercranks, and combinatorial witnesses of congruences for partitions into three parts
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we use a branch of polyhedral geometry, Ehrhart theory, to expand our combinatorial understanding of congruences for partition functions. Ehrhart theory allows us to give a new decomposition of partitions, which in turn allows us to define statistics called {\it supercranks} that combinatorially witness every instance of divisibility of $p(n,3)$ by any prime $m \equiv -1 \pmod 6$, where $p(n,3)$ is the number of partitions of $n$ into three parts. A rearrangement of lattice points allows us to demonstrate with explicit bijections how to divide these sets of partitions into $m$ equinumerous classes. The behavior for primes $m' \equiv 1 \pmod 6$ is also discussed.

Asymptotics for the determinant of the combinatorial Laplacian on hypercubic lattices
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we compute asymptotics for the determinant of the combinatorial Laplacian on a sequence of $d$-dimensional orthotope square lattices as the number of vertices in each dimension grows at the same rate. It is related to the number of spanning trees by the well-known matrix tree theorem. Asymptotics for $2$ and $3$ component rooted spanning forests in these graphs are also derived. Moreover, we express the number of spanning trees in a $2$-dimensional square lattice in terms of the one in a $2$-dimensional discrete torus and also in the quartered Aztec diamond. As a consequence, we find an asymptotic expansion of the number of spanning trees in a subgraph of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ with a triangular boundary.
A modified bootstrap percolation on a random graph coupled with a lattice
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper a random graph model $G_{\mathbb{Z}^2_N,p_d}$ is introduced, which is a combination of fixed torus grid edges in $(\mathbb{Z}/N \mathbb{Z})^2$ and some additional random ones. The random edges are called long, and the probability of having a long edge between vertices $u,v\in(\mathbb{Z}/N \mathbb{Z})^2$ with graph distance $d$ on the torus grid is $p_d=c/Nd$, where $c$ is some constant. We show that, {\em whp}, the diameter $D(G_{\mathbb{Z}^2_N,p_d})=Θ(\log N)$. Moreover, we consider non-monotonous bootstrap percolation on $G_{\mathbb{Z}^2_N,p_d}$. We prove the presence of phase transitions in mean-field approximation and provide fairly sharp bounds on the error of the critical parameters. Our model addresses interesting mathematical questions of non-monotonous bootstrap percolation, and it is motivated by recent results of brain research.
