Learning Cut Distributions with Quantum Optimization
Many combinatorial optimization problems admit a maximin fairness variant, where the aim is to find a distribution over possible solutions which maximizes an expected worst-case outcome. However, the support for an optimal distribution may be exponential, which can be intractable to represent in the worst case. To this end, we propose a quantum based approach to solving distribution optimization problems. Expanding on work analyzing the Dynamical Lie Algebras of the Quantum Approximate Optimization Algorithm (QAOA), we show that with a finite number of layers, a QAOA ansatz can be constructed to capture any distribution over bitstrings. We show that the resulting circuit is able to effectively solve the Fair Cut Cover, a fair interpretation of the classical Fractional Cut Cover Problem. In addition, we show that our algorithm is provably better than classical approximations on certain graph structures and empirically outperforms these classical algorithms on tested instances.
Infinite sequences via Lie algebra actions for oligomorphic groups
Many integer sequences arise as numbers of $G$-orbits on $\binom{X}{n}$ as $n$ varies, for a permutation group $G\subseteq \operatorname{Sym}(X)$. For finite $X$, Stanley proved that these finite sequences increase towards the middle using an action of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$. For infinite sets $X$, and hence infinite sequences, Cameron provided an argument for monotonicity. He first identifies orbits with a vector space basis of a certain commutative $k$-algebra $\mathsf{H}_{G,X}^{\star}$, called the orbit algebra. He then considers the operator, which forms the product with the constant $1$-function on $X$, and proves its injectivity. In this paper we generalize Stanley's approach to oligomorphic groups, and in particular extend Cameron's operator to a full $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$-action on $\mathsf{H}_{G,X}^{\star}$. We define for every oligomorphic permutation group $G\subseteq \operatorname{Sym}(X)$ the $X$-th tensor power $(k^r)^{\otimes X}$, generalizing work of Entova-Aizenbud. We show that this space carries natural commuting actions of $G$ and the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{gl}_r(k)$, the latter depending on a Harman--Snowden measure $μ$ on $G$. We then show that $\mathsf{H}_{G,X}^{\star}\subseteq (\mathbb{C}^2)^{\otimes X}$ can be decomposed into a direct sum of $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{C})$-Verma modules, which gives monotonicity. We explain how our approach applies to Fibonacci numbers, Tribonacci numbers, etc. by constructing measures on products with $(\mathbb{Q},<)$.
A Hopf algebra on nonplanar binary forests
We equip the graded polynomial algebra generated by nonplanar rooted binary trees with a Hopf algebra structure by defining a coproduct which disallows cutting both children of any given vertex, refining Connes-Kreimer's notion of admissible cuts. We show that the terms in this coproduct have an additional combinatorial interpretation in terms of subsets of leaves, which facilitates the construction of Hopf algebra morphisms involving this Hopf algebra, and creates a connection with a Hopf algebra of Bruned used in the renormalization of stochastic processes. Finally, we show that this Hopf algebra is dual to the universal enveloping algebra of a Lie algebra arising from a pre-Lie operator on binary trees based on edge-insertion.
On the $q$-multiplicity of sums of distinct simple roots of $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$
In combinatorial representation theory, Kostant's weight multiplicity formula $m(λ,μ)$ is a tool that provides a means of determining the multiplicity of a weight $μ$ in the adjoint representation of a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, and in this work we consider the case of $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$. In practice, performing calculations of Kostant's weight multiplicity formula is computationally intense, as the number of terms in this alternating sum grows factorially as the rank $r$ increases, of which most terms provide zero contribution to the overall sum. In this work, we determine the Weyl alternation set, that is the terms in the alternating sum with nonzero contribution, for integral weights $λ$ the highest root of $\mathfrak{sl}_{r+1}(\mathbb{C})$, and $μ$ any nonempty collection of distinct simple roots. We show that the alternation set is enumerated by a product of Fibonacci numbers, with the product being dependent on the choice of distinct simple roots. Then we compute the weight $q$-multiplicity for any nonempty collection of distinct simple roots.
Kostant's problem for permutations of shape $(n-2,1,1)$ and $(n-3,2,1)$
For a permutation $z$ in the symmetric group $\mathrm{S}_{n}$, denote by $L_{z}$ the corresponding simple highest weight module in the principal block of the BGG category $\mathcal{O}$ for the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_{n}(\mathbb{C})$. In this paper, we provide a combinatorial answer to Kostant's problem for the modules $L_{z}$ when $z$ has shape (associated Young diagram/integer partition via Robinson-Schensted correspondence) equal to $(n-2,1,1)$ or $(n-3,2,1)$. Moreover, we verify that certain closely related conjectures hold for such permutations, including the Indecomposability Conjecture, which states that applying any indecomposable projective functor to the corresponding simple highest weight module outputs either an indecomposable module or zero.
Tensor decomposition of Demazure crystals for symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebras
We study the tensor product of Demazure crystals for symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebras. It is not necessary that the tensor product of Demazure crystals is isomorphic to a disjoint union of Demazure crystals. In this paper, we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the decomposition of the tensor product of Demazure crystals as a disjoint union of Demazure crystals. Our results are the generalization of the results proved by Anthony Joseph and Takafumi Kouno. As an application, we obtain a sufficient condition when the product of Demazure characters is a linear combination of Demazure characters with nonnegative integer coefficients. In particular, we obtain a partial solution for the key positivity problem.
Tautological classes for (n,n+1) torus knots
We construct an explicit isomorphism between the HOMFLY-PT homology of $(n,n+1)$ torus knots and the direct sum of hook isotypic components of the space of diagonal coinvariants. As a consequence, we compute the action of tautological classes in HOMFLY-PT homology of $(n,n+1)$ torus knots and prove that it extends to an action of the Lie algebra of Hamiltonian vector fields on the plane. We also compute the action of differentials $d_N$ in Rasmussen spectral sequences from HOMLFY-PT to $\mathfrak{gl}(N)$ homology of $(n,n+1)$ torus knots.
Kostant cuspidal permutations
In relation to Kostant's problem for simple highest weight modules over the general linear Lie algebra, we prove a persistence result for Kostant negative consecutive patterns. Inspired by it, we introduce the notion of a Kostant cuspidal permutation as a minimal Kostant negative consecutive pattern. It is shown that Kostant cuspidality is an invariant of a Kazhdan-Lusztig left cell. We describe four infinite families of Kostant cuspidal involutions, including a complete classification of Kostant cuspidal fully commutative involutions. In particular, we show that the number of new Kostant cuspidal elements can be arbitrarily large, when the rank grows. This provides some potential explanation why Kostant's problem is hard.
Post-Hopf algebroids, post-Lie-Rinehart algebras and geometric numerical integration
In this paper, we introduce the notion of post-Hopf algebroids, generalizing the pre-Hopf algebroids introduced in [Bronasco, Laurent, 2025] in the study of exotic aromatic S-series. We construct action post-Hopf algebroids through actions of post-Hopf algebras. We show that the universal enveloping algebra of a post-Lie-Rinehart algebra (post-Lie algebroid) is naturally a post-Hopf algebroid. As a byproduct, we construct the free post-Lie-Rinehart algebra using a magma algebra with a linear map to the derivation Lie algebra of a commutative associative algebra. Applications in geometric numerical integration on manifolds are given.
A Local Characterization of Unions of Demazure Crystals
We characterize subsets of highest weight $\mathfrak{g}$-crystals that arise as unions of Demazure crystals, for any symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. We provide a local characterization for these subsets and prove they admit disjoint decompositions into Demazure atoms. As a consequence, we give a new characterization for when a subset of a highest weight crystal is a Demazure crystal as well as a crystal-theoretic proof that any Polo module admits a relative Schubert filtration.
Seaweed algebras with restricted part sizes
Seaweed algebras are a class of Lie algebras that are naturally characterized by a pair of compositions, which in turn are represented visually as planar graphs called meanders. These meanders provide a straightforward method for computing the index of the associated algebra. The goal of this paper is to enumerate those seaweed algebras with a fixed index and whose associated compositions have restricted part sizes. In particular, we enumerate those with composition part sizes from so-called acyclic sets. We also establish a bijection between sets of indecomposable seaweed algebras with meanders with certain restricted part sizes and sets of permutations with restricted displacements. In certain cases, the index of the algebra can be determined by a simple statistic on the permutation.
Affine Jacobi-Trudi formulas and $q,t$-Rogers-Ramanujan identities
We conjecture affine or Hall-Littlewood analogues of the dual Jacobi-Trudi formulas for orthogonal and symplectic Schur functions indexed by rectangular partitions of maximal height. These conjectures are then used to derive $t$-analogues of many known Rogers-Ramanujan identities for the characters of standard modules of affine Lie algebras. This includes $t$-analogues of the classical Rogers-Ramanujan identities, (some of) the Andrews-Gordon identities and the $\mathrm{C}_n^{(1)}$, $\mathrm{A}_{2n}^{(2)}$ and $\mathrm{D}_{n+2}^{(2)}$ GOW identities. We also prove an affine analogue of the dual Jacobi-Trudi formula for Schur functions indexed by rectangular partitions of arbitrary height.
Leading terms of relations on a level 5 module over the twisted affine Lie algebra $A_2^{(2)}$
One of the starting points of this work was the duality of Borcea relating standard level $k$ representations of $A_1^{(1)}$ and level $2k+1$ of $A_2^{(2)}$. For $k=1$ the combinatorial bases in both cases yield the two Capparelli identities and we wanted to see if there is a correspondence between the bases in terms of partitions for all $k\in\mathbb N$. By using the vertex operator relations in the principal picture for level $5$ standard $A_2^{(2)}$-modules we reduce a spanning set of Poincare-Birkhoff-Witt-type vectors in $L(5Λ_0)$ by removing the leading terms of relations and rendering a list of 34 ``difference'' conditions for partitions. We have with computer programs sorted out the sets of partitions satisfying these conditions and formed the partial generating series which agrees with the principally specialized character for all powers of $q$ up to $41$. Although our list of leading terms is incomplete, our results show that the corresponding combinatorial identity for $L_{A_2^{(2)}}(5Λ_0)$ drastically differs from the one for the Borcea dual $L_{A_1^{(1)}}(2Λ_0)$.
The solvable Graph of a finite-dimensional Lie Algebra
We introduce and investigate the solvable graph $Γ_\mathfrak{S}(L)$ of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra $L$ over a field $F$. The vertices are the elements outside the solvabilizer $\sol(L)$, and two vertices are adjacent whenever they generate a solvable subalgebra. After developing the basic properties of solvabilizers and $S$-Lie algebras, we establish divisibility conditions, coset decompositions, and degree constraints for solvable graphs. Explicit examples, such as $\mathfrak{sl}_2(\mathbb{F}_3)$, illustrate that solvable graphs may be non-connected, in sharp contrast with the group-theoretic setting. We further determine the degree sequences of $Γ_\mathfrak{S}(\mathfrak{gl}_2(\F_q))$ and $Γ_\mathfrak{S}(\mathfrak{sl}_2(\F_q))$, highlighting how spectral types of matrices dictate combinatorial patterns. An algorithmic framework based on GAP and SageMath is also provided for practical computations. Our results reveal both analogies and differences with the nilpotent graph of Lie algebras, and suggest that solvable graphs encode structural invariants in a genuinely new way. This work opens the door to a broader graphical approach to solvability in Lie theory.
Generating functions of $W_{1+\infty}$ action on symmetric functions
We describe the action of the infinite-dimensional Lie algebra $W_{1+\infty}$ and its B-type analogue on Schur and Schur Q-functions, respectively, using formal distributions framework. We observe an interesting self-duality property possessed by these compact formulas.
Non-separable graphs meet Ledoux's polynomials
In the pathbreaking article \cite{LED16}, an integral representation of the derivatives of entropy along the heat flow of a probability measure was established under suitable moment conditions. These integral representations have found significant applications in diverse domains - notably in information theory (e.g., entropy power inequalities, monotonicity of Fisher information) and in estimation theory (through the link between entropy derivatives and the minimum mean square error, MMSE, in Gaussian channels). The representations involve multivariate polynomials $(R_n)_n$, arising from a Lie algebra framework on multilinear operators. Despite their central role, the combinatorial structure of these polynomials remains only partially understood. In this note, we prove that the number of monomials in $R_n$ coincides with the number of degree sequences with degree sum $2n$ having a non-separable graph realization, thereby resolving a conjecture from \cite{MPS24}, and drawing an interesting link between these two domains.
Kostant $ρ$-decomposition of homology I. Finite-dimensional representations
We give explicit, uniform formulas for the graded characters and total ranks of the Lie algebra homology of finite-dimensional representations in all classical types. In many cases, these compute the Tor groups of finite length modules over polynomial rings, and this is the first in a series of papers to investigate total rank conjectures from this perspective. These formulas refine and generalize the classical $ρ$-decomposition of Kostant, and in particular we prove that the characters involved exhibit three structural phenomena: divisibility (by a large power of 2), equidistribution, and uniform factorization formulas.
Monodromy of supersolvable toric arrangements
We study topological aspects of supersolvable abelian arrangements, toric arrangements in particular. The complement of such an arrangement sits atop a tower of fiber bundles, and we investigate the relationship between these bundles and bundles involving classical configuration spaces. In the toric case, we show that the monodromy of a supersolvable arrangement bundle factors through the Artin braid group, and that of a strictly supersolvable arrangement bundle factors further through the Artin pure braid group. The latter factorization is particularly informative -- we use it to determine a number of invariants of the complement of a strictly supersolvable arrangement, including the cohomology ring and the lower central series Lie algebra of the fundamental group.

The resonance varieties, the holonomy Lie algebra, and the holonomy Chen Lie algebra associated with the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a matroid provide an algebraic lens through which to examine the rich combinatorial structure of matroids and their geometric realizations as complex hyperplane arrangements. In this survey paper, we emphasize the commonalities between these objects but also the possible ways in which realizable and non-realizable matroids differ, leading to some open questions.
Diameter bounds for finite simple Lie algebras
We prove strong and explicit diameter bounds for finite simple Lie algebras, which parallel Babai's conjecture for finite simple groups. Specifically, we show that any nonabelian finite simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ over $\mathbf{F}_p$ has diameter $O((\log |\mathfrak{g}|)^D)$ for $D \approx 3.11$ with respect to any generating set. For absolutely simple classical Lie algebras over $\mathbf{F}_p$, we establish the sharper bound $O(\log |\mathfrak{g}|)$ when the Lie type is fixed and the generators are chosen uniformly at random.
