Permutation Statistics and $q$-Fibonacci Numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, Goyt and Sagan studied distributions of certain set partition statistics over pattern restricted sets of set partitions that were counted by the Fibonacci numbers. Their study produced a class of $q$-Fibonacci numbers, which they related to $q$-Fibonacci numbers studied by Carlitz and Cigler. In this paper we will study the distributions of some Mahonian statistics over pattern restricted sets of permutations. We will give bijective proofs connecting some of our $q$-Fibonacci numbers to those of Carlitz, Cigler, Goyt and Sagan. We encode these permutations as words and use a weight to produce bijective proofs of $q$-Fibonacci identities. Finally, we study the distribution of some of these statistics on pattern restricted permutations that West showed were counted by even Fibonacci numbers.

Place-difference-value patterns: A generalization of generalized permutation and word patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by study of Mahonian statistics, in 2000, Babson and Steingrimsson introduced the notion of a "generalized permutation pattern" (GP) which generalizes the concept of "classical" permutation pattern introduced by Knuth in 1969. The invention of GPs led to a large number of publications related to properties of these patterns in permutations and words. Since the work of Babson and Steingrimsson, several further generalizations of permutation patterns have appeared in the literature, each bringing a new set of permutation or word pattern problems and often new connections with other combinatorial objects and disciplines. For example, Bousquet-Melou et al. introduced a new type of permutation pattern that allowed them to relate permutation patterns theory to the theory of partially ordered sets. In this paper we introduce yet another, more general definition of a pattern, called place-difference-value patterns (PDVP) that covers all of the most common definitions of permutation and/or word patterns that have occurred in the literature. PDVPs provide many new ways to develop the theory of patterns in permutations and words. We shall give several examples of PDVPs in both permutations and words that cannot be described in terms of any other pattern conditions that have been introduced previously. Finally, we raise several bijective questions linking our patterns to other combinatorial objects.

Fix-Euler-Mahonian statistics on wreath products
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1997 Clarke et al. studied a $q$-analogue of Euler's difference table for $n!$ using a key bijection $Ψ$ on symmetric groups. In this paper we extend their results to the wreath product of a cyclic group with the symmetric group. In particular we obtain a new mahonian statistic \emph{fmaf} on wreath products. We also show that Foata and Han's two recent transformations on the symmetric groups provide indeed a factorization of $Ψ$.

A classification of mahonian maj-inv statistics
Published • View PublicationBIB
Two well known mahonian statistics on words are the inversion number and the major index. In 1996, Foata and Zeilberger introduced generalizations, parameterized by relations, of these statistics. In this paper, we study the statistics which can be written as a sum of these generalized statistics. This leads to generalizations of some classical results. In particular, we characterize all such statistics which are mahonian.

Variations on Descents and Inversions in Permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study new statistics on permutations that are variations on the descent and the inversion statistics. In particular, we consider the alternating descent set of a permutation sigma = sigma_1sigma_2...sigma_n defined as the set of indices i such that either i is odd and sigma_i > sigma_{i+1}, or i is even and sigma_i < sigma_{i+1}. We show that this statistic is equidistributed with the 3-descent set statistic on permutations sigma = sigma_1sigma_2...sigma_{n+1} with sigma_1 = 1, defined to be the set of indices i such that the triple sigma_i sigma_{i+1} sigma_{i+2} forms an odd permutation of size 3. We then introduce Mahonian inversion statistics corresponding to the two new variations of descents and show that the joint distributions of the resulting descent-inversion pairs are the same. We examine the generating functions involving alternating Eulerian polynomials, defined by analogy with the classical Eulerian polynomials sum_{sigma in S_n} t^{des(sigma)+1} using alternating descents. For the alternating descent set statistic, we define the generating polynomial in two non-commutative variables by analogy with the ab-index of the Boolean algebra B_n, and make observations about it. By looking at the number of alternating inversions in alternating (down-up) permutations, we obtain a new q-analog of the Euler number E_n and show how it emerges in a q-analog of an identity expressing E_n as a weighted sum of Dyck paths.

q-Eulerian Polynomials: Excedance Number and Major index
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this research announcement we present a new q-analog of a classical formula for the exponential generating function of the Eulerian polynomials. The Eulerian polynomials enumerate permutations according to their number of descents or their number of excedances. Our q-Eulerian polynomials are the enumerators for the joint distribution of the excedance statistic and the major index. There is a vast literature on q-Eulerian polynomials which involve other combinations of Mahonian and Eulerian permutation statistics, but the combination of major index and excedance number seems to have been completely overlooked until now. We use symmetric function theory to prove our formula. In particular, we prove a symmetric function version of our formula, which involves an intriguing new class of symmetric functions. We also present connections with representations of the symmetric group on the homology of a poset recently introduced by Björner and Welker and on the cohomology of the toric variety associated with the Coxeter complex of the symmetric group, studied by Procesi, Stanley, Stembridge, Dolgachev and Lunts.

Sign balance for finite groups of Lie type
Published • View PublicationBIB
A product formula for the parity generating function of the number of 1's in invertible matrices over Z_2 is given. The computation is based on algebraic tools such as the Bruhat decomposition. The same technique is used to obtain a parity generating function also for symplectic matrices over Z_2. We present also a generating function for the sum of entries of matrices over an arbitrary finite field F_q calculated in F_q. These formulas are new appearances of the Mahonian distribution.

Signed Mahonian polynomials for classical Weyl groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
The generating functions of the major index and of the flag-major index, with each of the one-dimensional characters over the symmetric and hyperoctahedral group, respectively, have simple product formulas. In this paper, we give a factorial-type formula for the generating function of the D-major index with sign over the Weyl groups of type D. This completes a picture which is now known for all the classical Weyl groups.

Signed Mahonians
Published • View PublicationBIB
A classical result of MacMahon gives a simple product formula for the generating function of major index over the symmetric group. A similar factorial-type product formula for the generating function of major index together with sign was given by Gessel and Simion. Several extensions are given in this paper, including a recurrence formula, a specialization at roots of unity and type $B$ analogues.
