We introduce a new axiomatization of matroid theory that requires the elimination property only among modular pairs of circuits, and we present a cryptomorphic phrasing thereof in terms of Crapo's axioms for flats. This new point of view leads to a corresponding strengthening of the circuit axioms for oriented matroids.
On Local Equivalence, Surface Code States and Matroids

Recently, Ji et al disproved the LU-LC conjecture and showed that the local unitary and local Clifford equivalence classes of the stabilizer states are not always the same. Despite the fact this settles the LU-LC conjecture, a sufficient condition for stabilizer states that violate the LU-LC conjecture is missing. In this paper, we investigate further the properties of stabilizer states with respect to local equivalence. Our first result shows that there exist infinitely many stabilizer states which violate the LU-LC conjecture. In particular, we show that for all numbers of qubits $n\geq 28$, there exist distance two stabilizer states which are counterexamples to the LU-LC conjecture. We prove that for all odd $n\geq 195$, there exist stabilizer states with distance greater than two which are LU equivalent but not LC equivalent. Two important classes of stabilizer states that are of great interest in quantum computation are the cluster states and stabilizer states of the surface codes. To date, the status of these states with respect to the LU-LC conjecture was not studied. We show that, under some minimal restrictions, both these classes of states preclude any counterexamples. In this context, we also show that the associated surface codes do not have any encoded non-Clifford transversal gates. We characterize the CSS surface code states in terms of a class of minor closed binary matroids. In addition to making connection with an important open problem in binary matroid theory, this characterization does in some cases provide an efficient test for CSS states that are not counterexamples.

We show if the flow polynomial of a bridgeless graph G has only integral roots, then G is the dual graph to a planar chordal graph. We also show that for 3-connected cubic graphs, the same conclusion holds under the weaker hypothesis that it has only real flow roots. Expressed in the language of matroid theory, this result says that the cographic matroids with only integral characteristic roots are the cycle matroids of planar chordal graphs.

This is a survey on tropical polytopes from the combinatorial point of view and with a focus on algorithms. Tropical convexity is interesting because it relates a number of combinatorial concepts including ordinary convexity, monomial ideals, subdivisions of products of simplices, matroid theory, finite metric spaces, and the tropical Grassmannians. The relationship between these topics is explained via one running example throughout the whole paper. The final section explains how the new version 2.9.4 of the software system polymake can be used to compute with tropical polytopes.
On the unique representability of spikes over prime fields

For an integer $n>2$, a rank-$n$ matroid is called an $n$-spike if it consists of $n$ three-point lines through a common point such that, for all $k\in\{1, 2, ..., n - 1\}$, the union of every set of $k$ of these lines has rank $k+1$. Spikes are very special and important in matroid theory. In 2003 Wu found the exact numbers of $n$-spikes over fields with 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 elements, and the asymptotic values for larger finite fields. In this paper, we prove that, for each prime number $p$, a $GF(p$) representable $n$-spike $M$ is only representable on fields with characteristic $p$ provided that $n \ge 2p-1$. Moreover, $M$ is uniquely representable over $GF(p)$.

A polynomial f is said to have the half-plane property if there is an open half-plane H, whose boundary contains the origin, such that f is non-zero whenever all the variables are in H. This paper answers several open questions regarding multivariate polynomials with the half-plane property and matroid theory.
* We prove that the support of a multivariate polynomial with the half-plane property is a jump system. This answers an open question posed by Choe, Oxley, Sokal and Wagner and generalizes their recent result claiming that the same is true whenever the polynomial is also homogeneous.
* We characterize multivariate multi-affine polynomial with real coefficients that have the half-plane property (with respect to the upper half-plane) in terms of inequalities. This is used to answer two open questions posed by Choe and Wagner regarding strongly Rayleigh matroids.
* We prove that the Fano matroid is not the support of a polynomial with the half-plane property. This is the first instance of a matroid which does not appear as the support of a polynomial with the half-plane property and answers a question posed by Choe et al.
We also discuss further directions and open problems.

Let G(d,n) denote the Grassmannian of d-planes in C^n and let T be the torus (C^*)^n/diag(C^*) which acts on G(d,n). Let x be a point of G(d,n) and let \bar{Tx} be the closure of the T-orbit through x. Then the class of the structure sheaf of \bar{Tx} in the K-theory of G(d,n) depends only on which Plücker coordinates of x are nonzero -- combinatorial data known as the matroid of x. In this paper, we will define a certain map of additive groups from the K-theory of G(d,n) to Z[t]. Letting g_x(t) denote the image of (-1)^{n-dim Tx} [ O_{\bar{Tx}}], g_x behaves nicely under the standard constructions of matroid theory. Specifically, g_{x_1 \oplus x_2}(t)=g_{x_1}(t) g_{x_2}(t), g_{x_1 +_2 x_2}(t)=g_{x_1}(t) g_{x_2}(t)/t, g_x(t) = g_{x^{\perp}}(t) and g_x is unaltered by series and parallel extensions. Furthermore, the coefficients of g_x are nonnegative. The existence of this map implies bounds on (essentially equivalently) the complexity of Kapranov's Lie complexes, Hacking, Keel and Tevelev's very stable pairs and the author's tropical linear spaces when they are realizable in characteristic zero. Namely, in characteristic zero, a Lie complex or the underlying d-1 dimensional scheme of a very stable pair can have at most (n-i-1)! / (d-i)!(n-d-i)!(i-1)! strata of dimensions n-i and d-i respectively and a tropical linear space realizable in characteristic zero can have at most this many i-dimensional bounded faces.
Negatively correlated random variables and Mason's conjecture

Mason's Conjecture asserts that for an $m$--element rank $r$ matroid $\M$ the sequence $(I_k/\binom{m}{k}: 0\leq k\leq r)$ is logarithmically concave, in which $I_k$ is the number of independent $k$--sets of $\M$. A related conjecture in probability theory implies these inequalities provided that the set of independent sets of $\M$ satisfies a strong negative correlation property we call the \emph{Rayleigh condition}. This condition is known to hold for the set of bases of a regular matroid. We show that if $ω$ is a weight function on a set system $\Q$ that satisfies the Rayleigh condition then $\Q$ is a convex delta--matroid and $ω$ is logarithmically submodular. Thus, the hypothesis of the probabilistic conjecture leads inevitably to matroid theory. We also show that two--sums of matroids preserve the Rayleigh condition in four distinct senses, and hence that the Potts model of an iterated two--sum of uniform matroids satisfies the Rayleigh condition. Numerous conjectures and auxiliary results are included.
Subdominant matroid ultrametrics

Given a matroid M on the ground set E, the Bergman fan B(M), or space of M-ultrametrics, is a polyhedral complex in R^E which arises in several different areas, such as tropical algebraic geometry, dynamical systems, and phylogenetics. Motivated by the phylogenetic situation, we study the following problem: Given a point w in R^E, we wish to find an M-ultrametric which is closest to it in the l_infty metric.
The solution to this problem follows easily from the existence of the subdominant M-ultrametric: a componentwise maximum M-ultrametric which is componentwise smaller than w. A procedure for computing it is given, which brings together the points of view of matroid theory and tropical geometry.
When the matroid in question is the graphical matroid of the complete graph K_n, the Bergman fan B(K_n) parameterizes the equidistant phylogenetic trees with n leaves. In this case, our results provide a conceptual explanation for Chepoi and Fichet's method for computing the tree that most closely matches measured data.

A link between matroid theory and $p$-branes is discussed. The Schild type action for $p$-branes and matroid bundle notion provide the two central structures for such a link. We use such a connection to bring the duality concept in matroid theory to $p$-branes physics. Our analysis may be of particular interest in M-theory and in matroid bundle theory.

We make a number of observations about matter-ghost string phase, which may eventually lead to a formal connection between matroid theory and string theory. In particular, in order to take advantage of the already established connection between matroid theory and Chern-Simons theory, we propose a generalization of string theory in terms of some kind of Kahler metric. We show that this generalization is closely related to the Kahler-Chern-Simons action due to Nair and Schiff. In addition, we discuss matroid/string connection via matroid bundles and a Schild type action, and we add new information about the relationship between matroid theory, D=11 supergravity and Chern-Simons formalism.
Toric Hyperkahler Varieties

Extending work of Bielawski-Dancer and Konno, we develop a theory of toric hyperkahler varieties, which involves toric geometry, matroid theory and convex polyhedra. The framework is a detailed study of semi-projective toric varieties, meaning GIT quotients of affine spaces by torus actions, and specifically, of Lawrence toric varieties, meaning GIT quotients of even-dimensional affine spaces by symplectic torus actions. A toric hyperkahler variety is a complete intersection in a Lawrence toric variety. Both varieties are non-compact, and they share the same cohomology ring, namely, the Stanley-Reisner ring of a matroid modulo a linear system of parameters. Familiar applications of toric geometry to combinatorics, including the Hard Lefschetz Theorem and the volume polynomials of Khovanskii-Pukhlikov, are extended to the hyperkahler setting. When the matroid is graphic, our construction gives the toric quiver varieties, in the sense of Nakajima.

It is shown that matroid theory may provide a natural mathematical framework for a duality symmetries not only for quantum Yang-Mills physics, but also for M-theory. Our discussion is focused in an action consisting purely of the Chern-Simons term, but in principle the main ideas can be applied beyond such an action. In our treatment the theorem due to Thistlethwaite, which gives a relationship between the Tutte polynomial for graphs and Jones polynomial for alternating knots and links, plays a central role. Before addressing this question we briefly mention some important aspects of matroid theory and we point out a connection between the Fano matroid and D=11 supergravity. Our approach also seems to be related to loop solutions of quantum gravity based in Ashtekar formalism.
There is no tame triangulation of the infinite real Grassmannian

We show that there is no triangulation of the infinite real Grassmannian of k-planes in R^\infty which is nicely situated with respect to the coordinate axes. In terms of matroid theory, this says there is no triangulation of the Grassmannian subdividing the matroid stratification. This is proved by an argument in projective geometry, considering a specific sequence of configurations of points in the plane.
