Smaller extended formulations for spanning tree polytopes in minor-closed classes and beyond
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 28/4:P4.47, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a connected $n$-vertex graph in a proper minor-closed class $\mathcal G$. We prove that the extension complexity of the spanning tree polytope of $G$ is $O(n^{3/2})$. This improves on the $O(n^2)$ bounds following from the work of Wong (1980) and Martin (1991). It also extends a result of Fiorini, Huynh, Joret, and Pashkovich (2017), who obtained a $O(n^{3/2})$ bound for graphs embedded in a fixed surface. Our proof works more generally for all graph classes admitting strongly sublinear balanced separators: We prove that for every constant $β$ with $0<β<1$, if $\mathcal G$ is a graph class closed under induced subgraphs such that all $n$-vertex graphs in $\mathcal G$ have balanced separators of size $O(n^β)$, then the extension complexity of the spanning tree polytope of every connected $n$-vertex graph in $\mathcal{G}$ is $O(n^{1+β})$. We in fact give two proofs of this result, one is a direct construction of the extended formulation, the other is via communication protocols. Using the latter approach we also give a short proof of the $O(n)$ bound for planar graphs due to Williams (2002).
Avoiding large squares in trees and planar graphs
The Thue number $π(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of colors needed to color $G$ without creating a square on a path of $G$. For a graph class $C$, $π(C)$ is the supremum of $π(G)$ over the graphs $G\in C$. The Thue number has been investigated for famous minor-closed classes: $π(tree)=4$, $7\leπ(outerplanar)\le12$, and $11\leπ(planar)\le768$. Following a suggestion of Grytczuk, we consider the generalized parameters $π_k(C)$ such that only squares of period at least $k$ must be avoided. Thus, $π(C)=π_1(C)$. We show that $π_5(tree)=2$, $π_2(tree)=3$, and $π_k(planar)\ge11$ for every fixed $k$.
Separating layered treewidth and row treewidth
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 24, no. 1, Graph Theory (May 13, 2022) dmtcs:7458 • View PublicationBIB
Layered treewidth and row treewidth are recently introduced graph parameters that have been key ingredients in the solution of several well-known open problems. It follows from the definitions that the layered treewidth of a graph is at most its row treewidth plus 1. Moreover, a minor-closed class has bounded layered treewidth if and only if it has bounded row treewidth. However, it has been open whether row treewidth is bounded by a function of layered treewidth. This paper answers this question in the negative. In particular, for every integer $k$ we describe a graph with layered treewidth 1 and row treewidth $k$. We also prove an analogous result for layered pathwidth and row pathwidth.

Minor-closed classes of binary functions
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 26:3, Combinatorics (November 4, 2024) dmtcs:12230 • View PublicationBIB
Binary functions are a generalisation of the cocircuit spaces of binary matroids to arbitrary functions. Every rank function is assigned a binary function, and the deletion and contraction operations of binary functions generalise matroid deletion and contraction. We give the excluded minor characterisations for the classes of binary functions with well defined minors, and those with an associated rank function. Within these classes, we also characterise the classes of binary functions corresponding to polymatroids, matroids and binary matroids by their excluded minors. This gives a new proof of Tutte's excluded minor characterisation of binary matroids in the more generalised space of binary functions.

Clustered colouring of graph classes with bounded treedepth or pathwidth
Published • View PublicationBIB
The "clustered chromatic number" of a class of graphs is the minimum integer $k$ such that for some integer $c$ every graph in the class is $k$-colourable with monochromatic components of size at most $c$. We determine the clustered chromatic number of any minor-closed class with bounded treedepth, and prove a best possible upper bound on the clustered chromatic number of any minor-closed class with bounded pathwidth. As a consequence, we determine the fractional clustered chromatic number of every minor-closed class.
Surfaces have (asymptotic) dimension 2
The asymptotic dimension is an invariant of metric spaces introduced by Gromov in the context of geometric group theory. When restricted to graphs and their shortest paths metric, the asymptotic dimension can be seen as a large scale version of weak diameter colorings (also known as weak diameter network decompositions), i.e. colorings in which each monochromatic component has small weak diameter. In this paper, we prove that for any $p$, the class of graphs excluding $K_{3,p}$ as a minor has asymptotic dimension at most 2. This implies that the class of all graphs embeddable on any fixed surface (and in particular the class of planar graphs) has asymptotic dimension 2, which gives a positive answer to a recent question of Fujiwara and Papasoglu. Our result extends from graphs to Riemannian surfaces. We also prove that graphs of bounded pathwidth have asymptotic dimension at most 1 and graphs of bounded layered pathwidth have asymptotic dimension at most 2. We give some applications of our techniques to graph classes defined in a topological or geometrical way, and to graph classes of polynomial growth. Finally we prove that the class of bounded degree graphs from any fixed proper minor-closed class has asymptotic dimension at most 2. This can be seen as a large scale generalization of the result that bounded degree graphs from any fixed proper minor-closed class are 3-colorable with monochromatic components of bounded size. This also implies that (infinite) Cayley graphs avoiding some minor have asymptotic dimension at most 2, which solves a problem raised by Ostrovskii and Rosenthal.
Notes on Graph Product Structure Theory

It was recently proved that every planar graph is a subgraph of the strong product of a path and a graph with bounded treewidth. This paper surveys generalisations of this result for graphs on surfaces, minor-closed classes, various non-minor-closed classes, and graph classes with polynomial growth. We then explore how graph product structure might be applicable to more broadly defined graph classes. In particular, we characterise when a graph class defined by a cartesian or strong product has bounded or polynomial expansion. We then explore graph product structure theorems for various geometrically defined graph classes, and present several open problems.

Decomposable polymatroids and connections with graph coloring
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce ideas that complement the many known connections between polymatroids and graph coloring. Given a hypergraph that satisfies certain conditions, we construct polymatroids, given as rank functions, that can be written as sums of rank functions of matroids, and for which the minimum number of matroids required in such sums is the chromatic number of the line graph of the hypergraph. This result motivates introducing chromatic numbers and chromatic polynomials for polymatroids. We show that the chromatic polynomial of any 2-polymatroid is a rational multiple of the chromatic polynomial of some graph. We also find the excluded minors for the minor-closed class of polymatroids that can be written as sums of rank functions of matroids that form a chain of quotients.

Fractal classes of matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
A minor-closed class of matroids is (strongly) fractal if the number of n-element matroids in the class is dominated by the number of n-element excluded minors. We conjecture that when K is an infinite field, the class of K-representable matroids is strongly fractal. We prove that the class of sparse paving matroids with at most k circuit-hyperplanes is a strongly fractal class when k is at least three. The minor-closure of the class of spikes with at most k circuit-hyperplanes (with k>4) satisfies a strictly weaker condition: the number of 2t-element matroids in the class is dominated by the number of 2t-element excluded minors. However, there are only finitely many excluded minors with ground sets of odd size.
Planar graphs have bounded queue-number
Published in J. ACM 67(4):22, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We show that planar graphs have bounded queue-number, thus proving a conjecture of Heath, Leighton and Rosenberg from 1992. The key to the proof is a new structural tool called layered partitions, and the result that every planar graph has a vertex-partition and a layering, such that each part has a bounded number of vertices in each layer, and the quotient graph has bounded treewidth. This result generalises for graphs of bounded Euler genus. Moreover, we prove that every graph in a minor-closed class has such a layered partition if and only if the class excludes some apex graph. Building on this work and using the graph minor structure theorem, we prove that every proper minor-closed class of graphs has bounded queue-number. Layered partitions have strong connections to other topics, including the following two examples. First, they can be interpreted in terms of strong products. We show that every planar graph is a subgraph of the strong product of a path with some graph of bounded treewidth. Similar statements hold for all proper minor-closed classes. Second, we give a simple proof of the result by DeVos et al. (2004) that graphs in a proper minor-closed class have low treewidth colourings.
Unavoidable minors for graphs with large $\ell_p$-dimension
A metric graph is a pair $(G,d)$, where $G$ is a graph and $d:E(G) \to\mathbb{R}_{\geq0}$ is a distance function. Let $p \in [1,\infty]$ be fixed. An isometric embedding of the metric graph $(G,d)$ in $\ell_p^k = (\mathbb{R}^k, d_p)$ is a map $φ: V(G) \to \mathbb{R}^k$ such that $d_p(φ(v), φ(w)) = d(vw)$ for all edges $vw\in E(G)$. The $\ell_p$-dimension of $G$ is the least integer $k$ such that there exists an isometric embedding of $(G,d)$ in $\ell_p^k$ for all distance functions $d$ such that $(G,d)$ has an isometric embedding in $\ell_p^K$ for some $K$. It is easy to show that $\ell_p$-dimension is a minor-monotone property. In this paper, we characterize the minor-closed graph classes $\mathcal{C}$ with bounded $\ell_p$-dimension, for $p \in \{2,\infty\}$. For $p=2$, we give a simple proof that $\mathcal{C}$ has bounded $\ell_2$-dimension if and only if $\mathcal{C}$ has bounded treewidth. In this sense, the $\ell_2$-dimension of a graph is `tied' to its treewidth. For $p=\infty$, the situation is completely different. Our main result states that a minor-closed class $\mathcal{C}$ has bounded $\ell_\infty$-dimension if and only if $\mathcal{C}$ excludes a graph obtained by joining copies of $K_4$ using the $2$-sum operation, or excludes a Möbius ladder with one `horizontal edge' removed.

Baker game and polynomial-time approximation schemes
Baker devised a technique to obtain approximation schemes for many optimization problems restricted to planar graphs; her technique was later extended to more general graph classes. In particular, using the Baker's technique and the minor structure theorem, Dawar et al. gave Polynomial-Time Approximation Schemes (PTAS) for all monotone optimization problems expressible in the first-order logic when restricted to a proper minor-closed class of graphs. We define a Baker game formalizing the notion of repeated application of Baker's technique interspersed with vertex removal, prove that monotone optimization problems expressible in the first-order logic admit PTAS when restricted to graph classes in which the Baker game can be won in a constant number of rounds, and prove without use of the minor structure theorem that all proper minor-closed classes of graphs have this property.
Minor-closed graph classes with bounded layered pathwidth
Published in SIAM J. Discrete Math., 34(3), 1693-1709, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We prove that a minor-closed class of graphs has bounded layered pathwidth if and only if some apex-forest is not in the class. This generalises a theorem of Robertson and Seymour, which says that a minor-closed class of graphs has bounded pathwidth if and only if some forest is not in the class.
Tight Upper Bounds on the Crossing Number in a Minor-Closed Class
The crossing number of a graph is the minimum number of crossings in a drawing of the graph in the plane. Our main result is that every graph $G$ that does not contain a fixed graph as a minor has crossing number $O(Δn)$, where $G$ has $n$ vertices and maximum degree $Δ$. This dependence on $n$ and $Δ$ is best possible. This result answers an open question of Wood and Telle [New York J. Mathematics, 2007], who proved the best previous bound of $O(Δ^2 n)$. We also study the convex and rectilinear crossing numbers, and prove an $O(Δn)$ bound for the convex crossing number of bounded pathwidth graphs, and a $\sum_v°(v)^2$ bound for the rectilinear crossing number of $K_{3,3}$-minor-free graphs.

Polynomial bounds for centered colorings on proper minor-closed graph classes
Published • View PublicationBIB
For $p\in \mathbb{N}$, a coloring $λ$ of the vertices of a graph $G$ is {\em{$p$-centered}} if for every connected subgraph~$H$ of $G$, either $H$ receives more than $p$ colors under $λ$ or there is a color that appears exactly once in $H$. In this paper, we prove that every $K_t$-minor-free graph admits a $p$-centered coloring with $\mathcal{O}(p^{g(t)})$ colors for some function $g$. In the special case that the graph is embeddable in a fixed surface $Σ$ we show that it admits a $p$-centered coloring with $\mathcal{O}(p^{19})$ colors, with the degree of the polynomial independent of the genus of $Σ$. This provides the first polynomial upper bounds on the number of colors needed in $p$-centered colorings of graphs drawn from proper minor-closed classes, which answers an open problem posed by Dvoř{á}k. As an algorithmic application, we use our main result to prove that if $\mathcal{C}$ is a fixed proper minor-closed class of graphs, then given graphs $H$ and $G$, on $p$ and $n$ vertices, respectively, where $G\in \mathcal{C}$, it can be decided whether $H$ is a subgraph of $G$ in time $2^{\mathcal{O}(p\log p)}\cdot n^{\mathcal{O}(1)}$ and space $n^{\mathcal{O}(1)}$.

Delta-matroids as subsystems of sequences of Higgs lifts
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
In her paper "Generalized matroids and supermodular colourings", Tardos studied special delta-matroids obtained from sequences of Higgs lifts; these are the full Higgs lift delta-matroids that we treat and around which all of our results revolve. We give an excluded-minor characterization of the class of full Higgs lift delta-matroids within the class of all delta-matroids, and we give similar characterizations of two other minor-closed classes of delta-matroids that we define using Higgs lifts. We introduce a minor-closed, dual-closed class of Higgs lift delta-matroids that arise from lattice paths. It follows from results of Bouchet that all delta-matroids can be obtained from full Higgs lift delta-matroids by removing certain feasible sets; to address which feasible sets can be removed, we give an excluded-minor characterization of delta-matroids within the more general structure of set systems. Many of these excluded minors occur again when we characterize the delta-matroids in which the collection of feasible sets is the union of the collections of bases of matroids of different ranks, and yet again when we require those matroids to have special properties, such as being paving.

On perturbations of highly connected dyadic matroids
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 22 (2018), 513-542 • View PublicationBIB
Geelen, Gerards, and Whittle [3] announced the following result: let $q = p^k$ be a prime power, and let $\mathcal{M}$ be a proper minor-closed class of $\mathrm{GF}(q)$-representable matroids, which does not contain $\mathrm{PG}(r-1,p)$ for sufficiently high $r$. There exist integers $k, t$ such that every vertically $k$-connected matroid in $\mathcal{M}$ is a rank-$(\leq t)$ perturbation of a frame matroid or the dual of a frame matroid over $\mathrm{GF}(q)$. They further announced a characterization of the perturbations through the introduction of subfield templates and frame templates. We show a family of dyadic matroids that form a counterexample to this result. We offer several weaker conjectures to replace the ones in [3], discuss consequences for some published papers, and discuss the impact of these new conjectures on the structure of frame templates.

On the critical densities of minor-closed classes

Given a minor-closed class $\mathcal{A}$ of graphs, let $β_{\mathcal{A}}$ denote the supremum over all graphs in $\mathcal{A}$ of the ratio of edges to vertices. We investigate the set $B$ of all such values $β_{\mathcal{A}}$, taking further the project begun by Eppstein. Amongst other results, we determine the small values in $B$ (those up to 2); we show that $B$ is `asymptotically dense'; and we answer some questions posed by Eppstein.

Islands in minor-closed classes. I. Bounded treewidth and separators
The clustered chromatic number of a graph class is the minimum integer $t$ such that for some $C$ the vertices of every graph in the class can be colored in $t$ colors so that every monochromatic component has size at most $C$. We show that the clustered chromatic number of the class of graphs embeddable on a given surface is four, proving the conjecture of Esperet and Ochem. Additionally, we study the list version of the concept and characterize the minor-closed classes of graphs of bounded treewidth with given clustered list chromatic number. We further strengthen the above results to solve some extremal problems on bootstrap percolation of minor-closed classes.
The Weisfeiler-Leman Dimension of Planar Graphs is at most 3
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the Weisfeiler-Leman (WL) dimension of the class of all finite planar graphs is at most 3. In particular, every finite planar graph is definable in first-order logic with counting using at most 4 variables. The previously best known upper bounds for the dimension and number of variables were 14 and 15, respectively. First we show that, for dimension 3 and higher, the WL-algorithm correctly tests isomorphism of graphs in a minor-closed class whenever it determines the orbits of the automorphism group of any arc-colored 3-connected graph belonging to this class. Then we prove that, apart from several exceptional graphs (which have WL-dimension at most 2), the individualization of two correctly chosen vertices of a colored 3-connected planar graph followed by the 1-dimensional WL-algorithm produces the discrete vertex partition. This implies that the 3-dimensional WL-algorithm determines the orbits of a colored 3-connected planar graph. As a byproduct of the proof, we get a classification of the 3-connected planar graphs with fixing number 3.
