S-Motzkin paths with catastrophes and air pockets
So called $S$-Motzkin paths are combined the concepts `catastrophes' and `air pockets. The enumeration is done by properly set up bivariate generating functions which can be extended using the kernel method.

Partial Motzkin paths with air pockets of the first kind avoiding peaks, valleys or double rises
Motzkin paths with air pockets (MAP) of the first kind are defined as a generalization of Dyck paths with air pockets. They are lattice paths in $\mathbb{N}^2$ starting at the origin made of steps $U=(1,1)$, $D_k=(1,-k)$, $k\geq 1$ and $H=(1,0)$, where two down-steps cannot be consecutive. We enumerate MAP and their prefixes avoiding peaks (resp. valleys, resp. double rise) according to the length, the type of the last step, and the height of its end-point. We express our results using Riordan arrays. Finally, we provide constructive bijections between these paths and restricted Dyck and Motzkin paths.

Two kinds of partial Motzkin paths with air pockets
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motzkin paths with air pockets (MAP) are defined as a generalization of Dyck paths with air pockets by adding some horizontal steps with certain conditions. In this paper, we introduce two generalizations. The first one consists of lattice paths in $\Bbb{N}^2$ starting at the origin made of steps $U=(1,1)$, $D_k=(1,-k)$, $k\geq 1$ and $H=(1,0)$, where two down steps cannot be consecutive, while the second one are lattice paths in $\Bbb{N}^2$ starting at the origin, made of steps $U$, $D_k$ and $H$, where each step $D_k$ and $H$ is necessarily followed by an up step, except for the last step of the path. We provide enumerative results for these paths according to the length, the type of the last step, and the height of its end-point. A similar study is made for these paths read from right to left. As a byproduct, we obtain new classes of paths counted by the Motzkin numbers. Finally, we express our results using Riordan arrays.

$(p,q,t)$-Catalan continued fractions, gamma expansions and pattern avoidances
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a kind of $(p, q, t)$-Catalan numbers of Type A by generalizing the Jacobian type continued fraction formula, we proved that the corresponding expansions could be expressed by the polynomials counting permutations on $§_n(321)$ by various descent statistics. Moreover, we introduce a kind of $(p, q, t)$-Catalan numbers of Type B by generalizing the Jacobian type continued fraction formula, we proved that the Taylor coefficients and their $γ$-coefficients could be expressed by the polynomials counting permutations on $§_n(3124, 4123, 3142, 4132)$ by various descent statistics. Our methods include permutation enumeration techniques involving variations of bijections from permutation patterns to labeled Motzkin paths and modified Foata-Strehl action.

Cyclic descents, matchings and Schur-positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
A new descent set statistic on involutions, defined geometrically via their interpretation as matchings, is introduced in this paper, and shown to be equi-distributed with the standard one. This concept is then applied to construct explicit cyclic descent extensions on involutions, standard Young tableaux and Motzkin paths. Schur-positivity of the associated quasisymmetric functions follows.

An involution on restricted Laguerre histories and its applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
Laguerre histories (restricted or not) are certain weighted Motzkin paths with two types of level steps. They are, on one hand, in natural bijection with the set of permutations, and on the other hand, yield combinatorial interpretations for the moments of Laguerre polynomials via Flajolet's combinatorial theory of continued fractions. In this paper, we first introduce a reflection-like involution on restricted Laguerre histories. Then, we demonstrate its power by composing this involution with three bijections due to Fran\ccon-Viennot, Foata-Zeilberger, and Yan-Zhou-Lin, respectively. A host of equidistribution results involving various (multiset-valued) permutation statistics follow from these applications. As byproducts, seven apparently new Mahonian statistics present themselves; new interpretations of known Mahonian statistics are discovered as well. Finally, in our effort to show the interconnections between these Mahonian statistics, we are naturally led to a new link between the variant Yan-Zhou-Lin bijection and the Kreweras complement.

Counting Cycles on Planar Graphs in Subexponential Time
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the problem of counting all cycles or self-avoiding walks (SAWs) on triangulated planar graphs. We present a subexponential $2^{O(\sqrt{n})}$ time algorithm for this counting problem. Among the technical ingredients used in this algorithm are the planar separator theorem and a delicate analysis using pairs of Motzkin paths and Motzkin numbers. We can then adapt this algorithm to uniformly sample SAWs, in subexponential time. Our work is motivated by the problem of gerrymandered districting maps.
On the Outcome Map of MVP Parking Functions: Permutations Avoiding 321 and 3412, and Motzkin Paths
Published in Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications 3:2 (2023) Article #S2R11 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a new parking procedure called MVP parking in which $n$ cars sequentially enter a one-way street with a preferred parking spot from the $n$ parking spots on the street. If their preferred spot is empty, they park there. Otherwise, they park there and the car parked in that spot is bumped to the next unoccupied spot on the street. If all cars can park under this parking procedure, we say the list of preferences of the $n$ cars is an MVP parking function of length $n$. We show that the set of (classical) parking functions is exactly the set of MVP parking functions although the parking outcome (order in which the cars park) is different under each parking process. Motivating the question: Given a permutation describing the outcome of the MPV parking process, what is the number of MVP parking functions resulting in that given outcome? Our main result establishes a bound for this count which is tight precisely when the permutation describing the parking outcome avoids the patterns 321 and 3412. We then consider special cases of permutations and give closed formulas for the number of MVP parking functions with those outcomes. In particular, we show that the number of MVP parking functions which park in reverse order (that is the permutation describing the outcome is the longest word in $\mathfrak{S}_n$, which does not avoid the pattern 321) is given by the $n$th Motzkin number. We also give families of permutations describing the parking outcome for which the cardinality of the set of cars parking in that order is exponential and others in which it is linear.
Combinatorics of generalized Dyck and Motzkin paths
Published in Phys. Rev. E 106, 044123 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We relate the combinatorics of periodic generalized Dyck and Motzkin paths to the cluster coefficients of particles obeying generalized exclusion statistics, and obtain explicit expressions for the counting of paths with a fixed number of steps of each kind at each vertical coordinate. A class of generalized compositions of the integer path length emerges in the analysis.

Knight's paths towards Catalan numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide enumerating results for partial knight's paths of a given size. We prove algebraically that zigzag knight's paths of a given size ending on the $x$-axis are enumerated by the generalized Catalan numbers, and we give a constructive bijection with peakless Motzkin paths of a given length. After enumerating partial knight's paths of a given length, we prove that zigzag knight's paths of a given length ending on the $x$-axis are counted by the Catalan numbers. Finally, we give a constructive bijection with Dyck paths of a given length.

Combinatorics on bounded free Motzkin paths and its applications
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we construct a bijection from a set of bounded free Motzkin paths to a set of bounded Motzkin prefixes that induces a bijection from a set of bounded free Dyck paths to a set of bounded Dyck prefixes. We also give bijections between a set of bounded cornerless Motzkin paths and a set of $t$-core partitions, and a set of bounded cornerless symmetric Motzkin paths and a set of self-conjugate $t$-core partitions. As an application, we get explicit formulas for the number of ordinary and self-conjugate $t$-core partitions with a fixed number of corners.

Results on bar-core partitions, core shifted Young diagrams, and doubled distinct cores
Published • View PublicationBIB
Simultaneous bar-cores, core shifted Young diagrams (or CSYDs), and doubled distinct cores have been studied since Morris and Yaseen introduced the concept of bar-cores. In this paper, our goal is to give a formula for the number of these core partitions on $(s,t)$-cores and $(s,s+d,s+2d)$-cores for the remaining cases that are not covered yet. In order to achieve this goal, we observe a characterization of $\bar{s}$-core partitions to obtain characterizations of doubled distinct $s$-core partitions and $s$-CSYDs. By using them, we construct $NE$ lattice path interpretations of these core partitions on $(s,t)$-cores. Also, we give free Motzkin path interpretations of these core partitions on $(s,s+d,s+2d)$-cores.

A bijection between the sets of $(a,b,b^2)$-Generalized Motzkin paths avoiding $\mathbf{uvv}$-patterns and $\mathbf{uvu}$-patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
A generalized Motzkin path, called G-Motzkin path for short, of length $n$ is a lattice path from $(0, 0)$ to $(n, 0)$ in the first quadrant of the XOY-plane that consists of up steps $\mathbf{u}=(1, 1)$, down steps $\mathbf{d}=(1, -1)$, horizontal steps $\mathbf{h}=(1, 0)$ and vertical steps $\mathbf{v}=(0, -1)$. An $(a,b,c)$-G-Motzkin path is a weighted G-Motzkin path such that the $\mathbf{u}$-steps, $\mathbf{h}$-steps, $\mathbf{v}$-steps and $\mathbf{d}$-steps are weighted respectively by $1, a, b$ and $c$. Let $τ$ be a word on $\{\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{d}, \mathbf{v}, \mathbf{d}\}$, denoted by $\mathcal{G}_n^τ(a,b,c)$ the set of $τ$-avoiding $(a,b,c)$-G-Motzkin paths of length $n$ for a pattern $τ$. In this paper, we consider the $\mathbf{uvv}$-avoiding $(a,b,c)$-G-Motzkin paths and provide a direct bijection $σ$ between $\mathcal{G}_n^{\mathbf{uvv}}(a,b,b^2)$ and $\mathcal{G}_n^{\mathbf{uvu}}(a,b,b^2)$. Finally, the set of fixed points of $σ$ is also described and counted.

Partial Skew Motzkin Paths
Motzkin paths consist of up-steps, down-steps, level-steps, and never go below the $x$-axis. They return to the $x$-axis at the end. The concept of skew Dyck path \cite{Deutsch-italy} is transferred to skew Motzkin paths, namely, a left step $(-1,-1)$ is additionally allowed, but the path is not allowed to intersect itself. The enumeration of these combinatorial objects was known \cite{Qing}; here, using the kernel method, we extend the results by allowing them to end at a prescribed level $j$. The approach is completely based on generating functions. Asymptotics of the total number of objects as well as the average height are also given.

Enumeration of symmetric arc diagrams
Published in Involve 16 (2023) 107-126 • View PublicationBIB
We give recurrence relations for the enumeration of symmetric elements within four classes of arc diagrams corresponding to certain involutions and set partitions whose blocks contain no consecutive integers. These arc diagrams are motivated by the study of RNA secondary structures. For example, classic RNA secondary structures correspond to 3412-avoiding involutions with no adjacent transpositions, and structures with base triples may be represented as partitions with crossings. Our results rely on combinatorial arguments. In particular, we use Motzkin paths to describe noncrossing arc diagrams that have no arc connecting two adjacent nodes, and we give an explicit bijection to ternary words whose length coincides with the sum of their digits. We also discuss the asymptotic behavior of some of the sequences considered here in order to quantify the extremely low probability of finding symmetric structures with a large number of nodes.

Lattice paths, vector continued fractions, and resolvents of banded Hessenberg operators
We give a combinatorial interpretation of vector continued fractions obtained by applying the Jacobi-Perron algorithm to a vector of $p\geq 1$ resolvent functions of a banded Hessenberg operator of order $p+1$. The interpretation consists in the identification of the coefficients in the power series expansion of the resolvent functions as weight polynomials associated with Lukasiewicz lattice paths in the upper half-plane. In the scalar case $p=1$ this reduces to the relation established by P. Flajolet and G. Viennot between Jacobi-Stieltjes continued fractions, their power series expansion, and Motzkin paths. We consider three classes of lattice paths, namely the Lukasiewicz paths in the upper half-plane, their symmetric images in the lower half-plane, and a third class of unrestricted lattice paths which are allowed to cross the $x$-axis. We establish a relation between the three families of paths by means of a relation between the associated generating power series. We also discuss the subcollection of Lukasiewicz paths formed by the partial $p$-Dyck paths, whose weight polynomials are known in the literature as genetic sums or generalized Stieltjes-Rogers polynomials, and express certain moments of bi-diagonal Hessenberg operators.
Enumeration of Dyck paths with air pockets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study the new combinatorial class of Dyck paths with air pockets. We exhibit a bijection with the peakless Motzkin paths which transports several pattern statistics and give bivariate generating functions for the distribution of patterns as peaks, returns and pyramids. Then, we deduce the popularities and asymptotic expectations of these patterns and point out a link between the popularity of pyramids and a special kind of closed smooth self-overlapping curves, a subset of Fibonacci meanders. A similar study is conducted for non-decreasing Dyck paths with air pockets.
Negative moments of orthogonal polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
If a sequence indexed by nonnegative integers satisfies a linear recurrence without constant terms, one can extend the indices of the sequence to negative integers using the recurrence. Recently, Cigler and Krattenthaler showed that the negative version of the number of bounded Dyck paths is the number of bounded alternating sequences. In this paper we provide two methods to compute the negative versions of sequences related to moments of orthogonal polynomials. We give a combinatorial model for the negative version of the number of bounded Motzkin paths. We also prove two conjectures of Cigler and Krattenthaler on reciprocity between determinants.

Some statistics on generalized Motzkin paths with vertical steps
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, several authors have considered lattice paths with various steps, including vertical steps permitted. In this paper, we consider a kind of generalized Motzkin paths, called {\it G-Motzkin paths} for short, that is lattice paths from $(0, 0)$ to $(n, 0)$ in the first quadrant of the $XOY$-plane that consist of up steps $\mathbf{u}=(1, 1)$, down steps $\mathbf{d}=(1, -1)$, horizontal steps $\mathbf{h}=(1, 0)$ and vertical steps $\mathbf{v}=(0, -1)$. We mainly count the number of G-Motzkin paths of length $n$ with given number of $\mathbf{z}$-steps for $\mathbf{z}\in \{\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{h}, \mathbf{v}, \mathbf{d}\}$, and enumerate the statistics "number of $\mathbf{z}$-steps" at given level in G-Motzkin paths for $\mathbf{z}\in \{\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{h}, \mathbf{v}, \mathbf{d}\}$, some explicit formulas and combinatorial identities are given by bijective and algebraic methods, some enumerative results are linked with Riordan arrays according to the structure decompositions of G-Motzkin paths. We also discuss the statistics "number of $\mathbf{z}_1\mathbf{z}_2$-steps" in G-Motzkin paths for $\mathbf{z}_1, \mathbf{z}_2\in \{\mathbf{u}, \mathbf{h}, \mathbf{v}, \mathbf{d}\}$, the exact counting formulas except for $\mathbf{z}_1\mathbf{z}_2=\mathbf{dd}$ are obtained by the Lagrange inversion formula and their generating functions.
