Intervals in a family of Fibonacci lattices
We focus on a family of subsets $(\F^p_n)_{p\geq 2}$ of Dyck paths of semilength $n$ that avoid the patterns $DUU$ and $D^{p+1}$, which are enumerated by the generalized Fibonacci numbers. We endow them with the partial order relation induced by the well-known Stanley lattice, and we prove that all these posets are sublattices of the Stanley lattice. We provide generating functions for the numbers of linear and boolean intervals and we deduce the Möbius function for every $p\geq 2$. We count meet-irreducible elements in $\FF_n^p$ which establishes a surprising link with the edges of the $(n,p)$-Turán graph. We also prove that intervals are in one-to-one correspondence with bicolored Motzkin paths avoiding some patterns, which allows to enumerate intervals for $p=2$. Using a discrete continuity argument ($p\rightarrow \infty$), we present a similar enumerative study in a poset of some Dyck paths of semilength $n$ counted by $2^{n-1}$. Finally, we give bijections that transport the lattice structure on other combinatorial objects, proving that those lattices can be seen as the well-known dominance order on some compositions.
Markov chains on trees: almost lower and upper directed cases
The transition matrix of a Markov chain $(X_k,k\geq 0)$ on a finite or infinite rooted tree is said to be almost upper-directed if, given $X_k$, the node $X_{k+1}$ is either a descendant of $X_k$ or the parent of $X_k$. It is said to be almost lower-directed if given $X_k$, $X_{k+1}$ is either an ancestor of $X_k$ or a child of $X_k$.
These models include nearest neighbor Markov chains on trees.
Under an irreducibility assumption, we show that every almost upper-directed transition matrix on infinite (locally finite) trees has some invariant measures. An invariant measure $π$ is expressed thanks to a determinantal formula. We give general explicit criteria for recurrence and positive recurrence. An efficient algorithm (the leaf addition algorithm) of independent interest allows $π$ to be computed on many trees, without resorting to linear algebra considerations.
Flajolet, in a series of papers, provided some relations between continuous fractions, generating functions of weighted Mötzkin paths, and used them in connection with the analysis of birth and death processes. These fruitful representations made it possible to establish many formulae for continuous fractions. Analogous considerations appear here: this type of study can be extended to weighted paths on trees, whose generating functions can also be expressed, this time in terms of multicontinuous fractions.
Set-Valued Catalan Combinatorics
Set-valued standard Young tableaux are a generalization of standard Young tableaux due to Buch (2002) with applications in algebraic geometry. The enumeration of set-valued SYT is significantly more complicated than in the ordinary case, although product formulas are known in certain special cases. In this work we study the case of two-rowed set-valued SYT with a fixed number of entries. These tableaux are a new combinatorial model for the Catalan, Narayana, and Kreweras numbers, and can be shown to be in correspondence with both 321-avoiding permutations and a certain class of bicolored Motzkin paths. We also introduce a generalization of the set-valued comajor index studied by Hopkins, Lazar, and Linusson (2023), and use this statistic to find seemingly new q-analogs of the Catalan and Narayana numbers.
Abelian and stochastic sandpile models on complete bipartite graphs
In the sandpile model, vertices of a graph are allocated grains of sand. At each unit of time, a grain is added to a randomly chosen vertex. If that causes its number of grains to exceed its degree, that vertex is called unstable, and topples. In the Abelian sandpile model (ASM), topplings are deterministic, whereas in the stochastic sandpile model (SSM) they are random. We study the ASM and SSM on complete bipartite graphs. For the SSM, we provide a stochastic version of Dhar's burning algorithm to check if a given (stable) configuration is recurrent or not, with linear complexity. We also exhibit a bijection between sorted recurrent configurations and pairs of compatible Ferrers diagrams. We then provide a similar bijection for the ASM, and also interpret its recurrent configurations in terms of labelled Motzkin paths.
Combinatorics of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle
Orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle (OPUC for short) are a family of polynomials whose orthogonality is given by integration over the unit circle in the complex plane. There are combinatorial studies on the moments of various types of orthogonal polynomials, including standard orthogonal polynomials, Laurent biorthogonal polynomials, and orthogonal polynomials of type \( R_I \). In this paper, we study the moments of OPUC from a combinatorial perspective. We provide three path interpretations for them: Łukasiewicz paths, gentle Motzkin paths, and Schröder paths. Additionally, using these combinatorial interpretations, we derive explicit formulas for the generalized moments of some examples of OPUC, including the circular Jacobi polynomials and the Rogers--Szegő polynomials. Furthermore, we introduce several kinds of generalized linearization coefficients and give combinatorial interpretations for them.
Subspaces, subsets, and Motzkin paths
We define a map from subspaces to Motzkin paths and show that the inverse image of every path is a disjoint union of symmetric Boolean subsets yielding an explicit symmetric Boolean decomposition of the subspace lattice.
A conjectural basis for the $(1,2)$-bosonic-fermionic coinvariant ring
We give the first conjectural construction of a monomial basis for the coinvariant ring $R_n^{(1,2)}$, for the symmetric group $S_n$ acting on one set of bosonic (commuting) and two sets of fermionic (anticommuting) variables. Our construction interpolates between the modified Motzkin path basis for $R_n^{(0,2)}$ of Kim-Rhoades (2022) and the super-Artin basis for $R_n^{(1,1)}$ conjectured by Sagan-Swanson (2024) and proven by Angarone et al. (2024). We prove that our proposed basis has cardinality $2^{n-1}n!$, aligning with a conjecture of Zabrocki (2020) on the dimension of $R_n^{(1,2)}$, and show how it gives a combinatorial expression for the Hilbert series. We also conjecture a Frobenius series for $R_n^{(1,2)}$. We show that these proposed Hilbert and Frobenius series are equivalent to conjectures of Iraci, Nadeau, and Vanden Wyngaerd (2024) on $R_n^{(1,2)}$ in terms of segmented Smirnov words, by exhibiting a weight-preserving bijection between our proposed basis and their segmented permutations. We extend some of their results on the sign character to hook characters, and give a formula for the $m_μ$ coefficients of the conjectural Frobenius series. Finally, we conjecture a monomial basis for the analogous ring in type $B_n$, and show that it has cardinality $4^nn!$.

We present a simplified variant of Biane's bijection between permutations and 3-colored Motzkin paths with weight that keeps track of the inversion number, excedance number and a statistic so-called depth of a permutation. This generalizes a result by Guay-Paquet and Petersen about a continued fraction of the generating function for depth on the permutations of n elements. In terms of weighted Motzkin path, we establish an involution on the permutations that reverses the parities of depth and excedance numbers simultaneously, which proves that the numbers of permutations with even and odd depth (excedance numbers, respectively) are equal if n is even and differ by the tangent number if n is odd. Moreover, we present some interesting sign-imbalance results on permutations and derangements, refined with respect to depth and excedance numbers.

We present a novel bijection between stacked directed polyominoes and Motzkin paths with alternative catastrophes. Further, we show how this new connection can be used in order to obtain a better understanding of certain parameters of stacked directed animals.
Explicit Expressions for the First 20 Moments of the Area Under Dyck and Motzkin Paths
Starting from AJ Bu's recent article that computed explicit expressions for the GENERATING functions of sums of powers of areas under Dyck and Motzkin paths, we deduce from them explicit expressions for the actual sequences. This enables taking the limits of the scaled moments and confirming, in an entirely elementary way, that they tend to those of the area under Brownian Excursion (up to any specified moment).
Canonical reduced words and signed descent length enumeration in Coxeter groups
Reifegerste and independently, Petersen and Tenner studied a statistic $\mathrm{drops}()$ on permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$. Two other studied statistics on $\mathfrak{S}_n$ are $\mathrm{depth}$ and $\mathrm{exc}$. Using descents in ${\it canonical\ reduced\ words}$ of elements in $\mathfrak{S}_n$, we give an involution $f_A: \mathfrak{S}_n \mapsto \mathfrak{S}_n$ that leads to a neat formula for the signed trivariate enumerator of $\mathrm{drops},\mathrm{depth}, \mathrm{exc}$ in $\mathfrak{S}_n$. This gives a simple formula for the signed univariate drops enumerator in $\mathfrak{S}_n$. For the type-B Coxeter group $\mathfrak{B}_n$ as well, using similar techniques, we show analogous results. For the type D Coxeter group, we again get analogous results, but our proof is inductive.
Under the famous Foata-Zeilberger bijection $φ_{FZ}$ which takes permutations to restricted Laguerre histories, we show that permutations $π$ and $f_A(π)$ map to the same Motzkin path, but have different history components. Using the Foata-Zeilberger bijection, we also get a continued fraction for the generating function enumerating the pair of statistics $\mathrm{drops}$ and $\mathrm{MAD}$. Graham and Diaconis determined the mean and the variance of the Spearman metric of disarray $D(π)$ when one samples $π$ from $\mathfrak{S}_n$ at random. As an application of our results, we get the mean and variance of the statistic $\mathrm{drops}(π)$ when we sample $π$ from $\mathcal{A}_n$ at random.
Growth and density in free groupoids
The density of a subgroupoid with respect to a free groupoid is defined as the asymptotic ratio of their growths. This notion can be interpreted as a generalisation of the index's inverse for groups or as the probability of an element belonging to a subgroupoid. This more combinatorial strategy shows a richer picture of free groupoids than the bare algebraic perspective. We study the growth and density of several subgroupoids of a free groupoid. In addition, some aspects of enumeration related to the Motzkin paths are shown.
The Combinatorics of Motzkin Polyominoes
A word $w=w_1\cdots w_n$ over the set of positive integers is a Motzkin word whenever $w_1=\texttt{1}$, $1\leq w_k\leq w_{k-1}+1$, and $w_{k-1}\neq w_{k}$ for $k=2, \dots, n$. It can be associated to a $n$-column Motzkin polyomino whose $i$-th column contains $w_i$ cells, and all columns are bottom-justified. We reveal bijective connections between Motzkin paths, restricted Catalan words, primitive Łukasiewicz paths, and Motzkin polyominoes. Using the aforementioned bijections together with classical one-to-one correspondence with Dyck paths avoiding $UDU$s, we provide generating functions with respect to the length, area, semiperimeter, value of the last symbol, and number of interior points of Motzkin polyominoes. We give asymptotics and closed-form expressions for the total area, total semiperimeter, sum of the last symbol values, and total number of interior points over all Motzkin polyominoes of a given length. We also present and prove an engaging trinomial relation concerning the number of cells lying at different levels and first terms of the expanded $(1+x+x^2)^n$.
Explicit Generating Functions for the Sum of the Areas Under Dyck and Motzkin Paths (and for Their Powers)
In this paper, we first describe how to find the generating function for the sum of the areas under generalized Dyck paths (with an arbitrary set of steps) using Motzkin paths as a motivating example. We then focus on Motzkin and Dyck paths, deriving functional equations for them. We then describe an algorithm to manipulate these functional equations for finding `perturbation expansions' of the solutions, with applications for deriving explicit generating functions for the sum of powers of areas under Dyck and Motzkin paths for any desired power.
Motzkin paths of bounded height with two forbidden contiguous subwords of length two
Motzkin excursions and meanders are revisited. This is considered in the context of forbidden patterns. Previous work by Asinowski, Banderier, Gittenberger, and Roitner is continued. Motzkin paths of bounded height are considered, leading to matrix equations and also to continued fractions. The enumeration is done by properly setting up bivariate generating functions which can be expanded using the kernel method.
New combinatorial perspectives on MVP parking functions and their outcome map
In parking problems, a given number of cars enter a one-way street sequentially, and try to park according to a specified preferred spot in the street. Various models are possible depending on the chosen rule for collisions, when two cars have the same preferred spot. We study a model introduced by Harris, Kamau, Mori, and Tian in recent work, called the MVP parking problem. In this model, priority is given to the cars arriving later in the sequence. When a car finds its preferred spot occupied by a previous car, it "bumps" that car out of the spot and parks there. The earlier car then has to drive on, and parks in the first available spot it can find. If all cars manage to park through this procedure, we say that the list of preferences is an MVP parking function. We study the outcome map of MVP parking functions, which describes in what order the cars end up. In particular, we link the fibres of the outcome map to certain subgraphs of the inversion graph of the outcome permutation. This allows us to reinterpret and improve bounds from Harris et al. on the fibre sizes. We then focus on a subset of parking functions, called Motzkin parking functions, where every spot is preferred by at most two cars. We generalise results from Harris et al., and exhibit rich connections to Motzkin paths. We also give a closed enumerative formula for the number of MVP parking functions whose outcome is the complete bipartite permutation. Finally, we give a new interpretation of the MVP outcome map in terms of an algorithmic process on recurrent configurations of the Abelian sandpile model.
Grand Motzkin paths and $\{0,1,2\}$-trees -- a simple bijection
A well-known bijection between Motzkin paths and ordered trees with outdegree always $\le2$, is lifted to Grand Motzkin paths (the nonnegativity is dropped) and an ordered list of an odd number of such $\{0,1,2\}$ trees. This offers an alternative to a recent paper by Rocha and Pereira Spreafico.
Peakless Motzkin paths of bounded height
There was recent interest in Motzkin paths without peaks (peak: up-step followed immediately by down-step); additional results
about this interesting family is worked out. The new results are the enumeration of such paths that live in a strip $[0..\ell]$, and as
consequence the asymptotics of the average height, which is given by $2\cdot 5^{-1/4}\sqrt{πn}$. Methods include the kernel method
and singularity analysis of generating functions.
Decomposition of free cumulants
Free cumulants are multilinear functionals defined in terms of the moment functional with the use of the family of lattices of noncrossing partitions. In the univariate case, they can be identified with the coefficients of the Voiculescu transform of the moment functional which plays a role similar to that of the logarithm of the Fourier transform. The associated linearization property is connected with free independence. In turn, the family of much smaller lattices of interval partitions is used to define Boolean cumulants connected with Boolean independence. In order to bridge the gap between these two families of lattices and the associated cumulants we introduce and study the family of lattices of noncrossing partitions adapted to Motzkin paths and define the associated operator-valued `Motzkin cumulants'. We prove the corresponding Möbius inversion formula which plays the role of a lattice refinement of the formula expressing free cumulants in terms of Boolean cumulants. We apply this concept to free probability and obtain the additive decomposition of free cumulants in terms of scalar-valued counterparts of Motzkin cumulants.
Generating Functions for Restricted Motzkin Paths in a Slit for Arbitrary Weights
In this paper, I derive a generating function for discrete Motzkin paths of step size +2,+1,-1, restricted between two absorbing parallel lines, and generalized to arbitrary step weights. This continues off work of similar problems involving directed paths with either single barriers, uniform step size, or uniform weights.
