$K_{s,t}$-saturated bipartite graphs
An $n$-by-$n$ bipartite graph is $H$-saturated if the addition of any missing edge between its two parts creates a new copy of $H$. In 1964, Erdős, Hajnal and Moon made a conjecture on the minimum number of edges in a $K_{s,s}$-saturated bipartite graph. This conjecture was proved independently by Wessel and Bollobás in a more general, but ordered, setting: they showed that the minimum number of edges in a $K_{(s,t)}$-saturated bipartite graph is $n^2-(n-s+1)(n-t+1)$, where $K_{(s,t)}$ is the "ordered" complete bipartite graph with $s$ vertices in the first color class and $t$ vertices in the second. However, the very natural question of determining the minimum number of edges in the unordered $K_{s,t}$-saturated case remained unsolved. This problem was considered recently by Moshkovitz and Shapira who also conjectured what its answer should be. In this short paper we give an asymptotically tight bound on the minimum number of edges in a $K_{s,t}$-saturated bipartite graph, which is only smaller by an additive constant than the conjecture of Moshkovitz and Shapira. We also prove their conjecture for $K_{2,3}$-saturation, which was the first open case.

Towards a Characterization of Leaf Powers by Clique Arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
The class ${\cal L}_k$ of $k$-leaf powers consists of graphs $G=(V,E)$ that have a $k$-leaf root, that is, a tree $T$ with leaf set $V$, where $xy \in E$, if and only if the $T$-distance between $x$ and $y$ is at most $k$. Structure and linear time recognition algorithms have been found for $2$-, $3$-, $4$-, and, to some extent, $5$-leaf powers, and it is known that the union of all $k$-leaf powers, that is, the graph class ${\cal L} = \bigcup_{k=2}^\infty {\cal L}_k$, forms a proper subclass of strongly chordal graphs. Despite from that, no essential progress has been made lately. In this paper, we use the new notion of clique arrangements to suggest that leaf powers are a natural special case of strongly chordal graphs. The clique arrangement ${\cal A}(G)$ of a chordal graph $G$ is a directed graph that represents the intersections between maximal cliques of $G$ by nodes and the mutual inclusion of these vertex subsets by arcs. Recently, strongly chordal graphs have been characterized as the graphs that have a clique arrangement without bad $k$-cycles for $k \geq 3$. We show that the clique arrangement of every graph of ${\cal L}$ is free of bad $2$-cycles. The question whether this characterizes the class ${\cal L}$ exactly remains open.

Subproduct systems and Cartesian systems; new results on factorial languages and their relations with other areas
Published in Journal of Stochastic Analysis: Vol. 1 : No. 4 , Article 5 (2020) • View Publication • BIB
We point out that a sequence of natural numbers is the dimension sequence of a subproduct system if and only if it is the cardinality sequence of a word system (or factorial language). Determining such sequences is, therefore, reduced to a purely combinatorial problem in the combinatorics of words. A corresponding (and equivalent) result for graded algebras has been known in abstract algebra, but this connection with pure combinatorics has not yet been noticed by the product systems community. We also introduce Cartesian systems, which can be seen either as a set theoretic version of subproduct systems or an abstract version of word systems. Applying this, we provide several new results on the cardinality sequences of word systems and the dimension sequences of subproduct systems.

On Classification of Toric Surface Codes of Low Dimension
Published in Finite Fields Appl., Vol. 33, pp. 90-102, 2015 • View Publication • BIB
This work is a natural continuation of our previous work \cite{yz}. In this paper, we give a complete classification of toric surface codes of dimension less than or equal to 6, except a special pair, $C_{P_6^{(4)}}$ and $C_{P_6^{(5)}}$ over $\mathbb{F}_8$. Also, we give an example, $C_{P_6^{(5)}}$ and $C_{P_6^{(6)}}$ over $\mathbb{F}_7$, to illustrate that two monomially equivalent toric codes can be constructed from two lattice non-equivalent polygons.

The representation theory of generalized hyperoctahedral groups
We give an explicit decomposition of $\hbox{Ind}(1)_{B_n}^{S_{2n}}$, following Barbasch and Vogan [1]. We define two natural generalizations of $B_n$, and extend the proof in [1] to recursively compute these decompositions. Although the decompositions do not appear to follow a simple pattern, we prove enough of their structure to show that they are almost never multiplicity-free.

Weakly Submodular Functions
Submodular functions are well-studied in combinatorial optimization, game theory and economics. The natural diminishing returns property makes them suitable for many applications. We study an extension of monotone submodular functions, which we call {\em weakly submodular functions}. Our extension includes some (mildly) supermodular functions. We show that several natural functions belong to this class and relate our class to some other recent submodular function extensions. We consider the optimization problem of maximizing a weakly submodular function subject to uniform and general matroid constraints. For a uniform matroid constraint, the "standard greedy algorithm" achieves a constant approximation ratio where the constant (experimentally) converges to 5.95 as the cardinality constraint increases. For a general matroid constraint, a simple local search algorithm achieves a constant approximation ratio where the constant (analytically) converges to 10.22 as the rank of the matroid increases.

F-finite embeddabilities of sets and ultrafilters
Let $S$ be a semigroup, let $n\in\mathbb{N}$ be a positive natural number, let $A,B\subseteq S$, let $\mathcal{U},\mathcal{V}\inβS$ and let let $\mathcal{F}\subseteq\{f:S^{n}\rightarrow S\}$. We say that $A$ is $\mathcal{F}$-finitely embeddable in $B$ if for every finite set $F\subseteq A$ there is a function $f\in\mathcal{F}$ such that $f\left(A^{n}\right)\subseteq B$, and we say that $\mathcal{U}$ is $\mathcal{F}$-finitely embeddable in $\mathcal{V}$ if for every set $B\in\mathcal{V}$ there is a set $A\in\mathcal{U}$ such that $A$ is $\mathcal{F}$-finitely embeddable in $B$. We show that $\mathcal{F}$-finite embeddabilities can be used to study certain combinatorial properties of sets and ultrafilters related with finite structures. We introduce the notions of set and of ultrafilter maximal for $\mathcal{F}$-finite embeddability, whose existence is proved under very mild assumptions. Different choices of $\mathcal{F}$ can be used to characterize many combinatorially interesting sets/ultrafilters as maximal sets/ultrafilters, for example thick sets, AP-rich sets, $\overline{K(βS)}$ and so on. The set of maximal ultrafilters for $\mathcal{F}$-finite embeddability can be characterized algebraically in terms of $\mathcal{F}$. This property can be used to give an algebraic characterization of certain interesting sets of ultrafilters, such as the ultrafilters whose elements contain, respectively, arbitrarily long arithmetic, geoarithmetic or polynomial progressions. As a consequence of the connection between sets and ultrafilters maximal for $\mathcal{F}$-finite embeddability we are able to prove a general result that entails, for example, that given a finite partition of a set that contains arbitrarily long geoarithmetic (resp. polynomial) progressions, one cell must contain arbitrarily long geoarithmetic (resp. polynomial) progressions.
Combined tilings and separated set-systems
Published • View Publication • BIB
In 1998, Leclerc and Zelevinsky introduced the notion of weakly separated collections of subsets of the ordered $n$-element set $[n]$ (using this notion to give a combinatorial characterization for quasi-commuting minors of a quantum matrix). They conjectured the purity of certain natural domains $D\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ (in particular, of the hypercube $2^{[n]}$ itself, and the hyper-simplex $\{X\subseteq[n]\colon |X|=m\}$ for $m$ fixed), where $D$ is called pure if all maximal weakly separated collections in $D$ have the same cardinality. These conjectures have been answered affirmatively. In this paper, generalizing those earlier results, we reveal wider classes of pure domains in $2^{[n]}$. This is obtained as a consequence of our study of a novel geometric--combinatorial model for weakly separated set-systems, so-called \emph{combined (polygonal) tilings} on a zonogon, which yields a new insight in the area.

On involutions in extremal self-dual codes and the dual distance of semi self-dual codes
Published • View Publication • BIB
A classical result of Conway and Pless is that a natural projection of the fixed code of an automorphism of odd prime order of a self-dual binary linear code is self-dual. In this paper we prove that the same holds for involutions under some (quite strong) conditions on the codes. In order to prove it, we introduce a new family of binary codes: the semi self-dual codes. A binary self-orthogonal code is called semi self-dual if it contains the all-ones vector and is of codimension 2 in its dual code. We prove upper bounds on the dual distance of semi self-dual codes. As an application we get the following: let C be an extremal self-dual binary linear code of length 24m and s in Aut(C) be a fixed point free automorphism of order 2. If m is odd or if m=2k with binom{5k-1}{k-1} odd then C is a free F_2<s>-module. This result has quite strong consequences on the structure of the automorphism group of such codes.

On the group of alternating colored permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
The group of alternating colored permutations is the natural analogue of the classical alternating group, inside the wreath product $\mathbb{Z}_r \wr S_n$. We present a 'Coxeter-like' presentation for this group and compute the length function with respect to that presentation. Then, we present this group as a covering of $\mathbb{Z}_{\frac{r}{2}} \wr S_n$ and use this point of view to give another expression for the length function. We also use this covering to lift several known parameters of $\mathbb{Z}_{\frac{r}{2}} \wr S_n$ to the group of alternating colored permutations.

Long Cycles in 1-tough Graphs
In 1952, Dirac proved that every 2-connected graph with minimum degree $δ$ either is hamiltonian or contains a cycle of length at least $2δ$. In 1986, Bauer and Schmeichel enlarged the bound $2δ$ to $2δ+2$ under additional 1-tough condition - an alternative and more natural necessary condition for a graph to be hamiltonian. In fact, the bound $2δ+2$ is sharp for a graph on $n$ vertices when $n\equiv 1(mod\ 3)$. In this paper we present the final version of this result which is sharp for each $n$: every 1-tough graph either is hamiltonian or contains a cycle of length at least $2δ+2$ when $n\equiv 1(mod\ 3)$, at least $2δ+3$ when $n\equiv 2(mod\ 3)$ or $n\equiv 1(mod\ 4)$, and at least $2δ+4$ otherwise.

Random-bit optimal uniform sampling for rooted planar trees with given sequence of degrees and Applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we redesign and simplify an algorithm due to Remy et al. for the generation of rooted planar trees that satisfies a given partition of degrees. This new version is now optimal in terms of random bit complexity, up to a multiplicative constant. We then apply a natural process "simulate-guess-and-proof" to analyze the height of a random Motzkin in function of its frequency of unary nodes. When the number of unary nodes dominates, we prove some unconventional height phenomenon (i.e. outside the universal square root behaviour.)

Playing jeu de taquin on d-complete posets
Using a modified version of jeu de taquin, Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii gave a bijective proof of the hook-length formula for counting standard Young tableaux of fixed shape. In this paper we consider a natural extension of jeu de taquin to arbitrary posets. Given a poset P, jeu de taquin defines a map from the set of bijective labelings of the poset elements with $\{1,2,...,|P|\}$ to the set of linear extensions of the poset. One question of particular interest is for which posets this map yields each linear extension equally often. We analyze the double-tailed diamond poset $D_{m,n}$ and show that uniform distribution is obtained if and only if $D_{m,n}$ is d-complete. Furthermore, we observe that the extended hook-length formula for counting linear extensions on d-complete posets provides a combinatorial answer to a seemingly unrelated question, namely: Given a uniformly random standard Young tableau of fixed shape, what is the expected value of the left-most entry in the second row?

The existence of designs
We prove the existence conjecture for combinatorial designs, answering a question of Steiner from 1853. More generally, we show that the natural divisibility conditions are sufficient for clique decompositions of simplicial complexes that satisfy a certain pseudorandomness condition. As a further generalisation, we obtain the same conclusion only assuming an extendability property and the existence of a robust fractional clique decomposition.

Planar stochastic hyperbolic infinite triangulations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Pursuing the approach of Angel & Ray, we introduce and study a family of random infinite triangulations of the full-plane that satisfy a natural spatial Markov property. These new random lattices naturally generalize Angel & Schramm's Uniform Infinite Planar Triangulation (UIPT) and are hyperbolic in flavor. We prove that they exhibit a sharp exponential volume growth, are non-Liouville, and that the simple random walk on them has positive speed almost surely. We conjecture that these infinite triangulations are the local limits of uniform triangulations whose genus is proportional to the size.

The Location of the First Ascent in a 123-Avoiding Permutation
It is natural to ask, given a permutation with no three-term ascending subsequence, at what index the first ascent occurs. We shall show, using both a recursion and a bijection, that the number of 123-avoiding permutations at which the first ascent occurs at positions $k,k+1$ is given by the $k$-fold Catalan convolution $C_{n,k}$. For $1\le k\le n$, $C_{n,k}$ is also seen to enumerate the number of 123-avoiding permutations with $n$ being in the $k$th position. Two interesting discrete probability distributions, related obliquely to the Poisson and geometric random variables, are derived as a result.

Higher Derivatives of the Falling Factorial and Related Generalizations of the Stirling and Harmonic Numbers
Through a brute-force approach to calculating the higher derivatives of the falling factorial function, a number of interesting quantities were obtained and analyzed. In particular, it was found that a quantity that can be described as the "elementary symmetric harmonic sum" is a natural way to describe the solutions to such higher derivatives. The relationship of this type of generalized harmonic number to other quantities discussed in the literature, such as the r-Stirling numbers, was described in detail.

Partition regularity without the columns property
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 143 (2015), no. 8, 3387-3399 • View Publication • BIB
A finite or infinite matrix A with rational entries is called partition regular if whenever the natural numbers are finitely coloured there is a monochromatic vector x with Ax=0. Many of the classical theorems of Ramsey Theory may naturally be interpreted as assertions that particular matrices are partition regular. In the finite case, Rado proved that a matrix is partition regular if and only it satisfies a computable condition known as the columns property. The first requirement of the columns property is that some set of columns sums to zero. In the infinite case, much less is known. There are many examples of matrices with the columns property that are not partition regular, but until now all known examples of partition regular matrices did have the columns property. Our main aim in this paper is to show that, perhaps surprisingly, there are infinite partition regular matrices without the columns property --- in fact, having no set of columns summing to zero. We also make a conjecture that if a partition regular matrix (say with integer coefficients) has bounded row sums then it must have the columns property, and prove a first step towards this.

Fully commutative elements of type D and homogeneous representations of KLR-algebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we decompose the set of fully commutative elements into natural subsets when the Coxeter group is of type $D_n$, and study the combinatorics of these subsets, revealing hidden structures. (We do not consider type $A_n$ first, since a similar decomposition for type $A_n$ is trivial.) As an application, we classify and enumerate the homogeneous representations of the Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras of type $D_n$.

A Note on Minimal zero-sum sequences over ${\mathbb Z}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
A zero-sum sequence over ${\mathbb Z}$ is a sequence with terms in ${\mathbb Z}$ that sum to $0$. It is called minimal if it does not contain a proper zero-sum subsequence. Consider a minimal zero-sum sequence over ${\mathbb Z}$ with positive terms $a_1,\ldots,a_h$ and negative terms $b_1,\ldots,b_k$. We prove that $h\leq \lfloor σ^+/k\rfloor$ and $k\leq \lfloor σ^+/h\rfloor$, where $σ^+=\sum_{i=1}^h a_i=-\sum_{j=1}^k b_j$. These bounds are tight and improve upon previous results. We also show a natural partial order structure on the collection of all minimal zero-sum sequences over the set $\{i\in {\mathbb Z}:\; -n\leq i\leq n\}$ for any positive integer $n$.
