Extremal Hypergraphs for Ryser's Conjecture: Connectedness of Line Graphs of Bipartite Graphs
In this paper we consider a natural extremal graph theoretic problem of topological sort, concerning the minimization of the (topological) connectedness of the independence complex of graphs in terms of its dimension. We observe that the lower bound $\frac{\dim(\mathcal{I}(G))}{2} - 2$ on the connectedness of the independence complex $\mathcal{I}(G)$ of line graphs of bipartite graphs $G$ is tight. In our main theorem we characterize the extremal examples. Our proof of this characterization is based on topological machinery.
Our motivation for studying this problem comes from a classical conjecture of Ryser. Ryser's Conjecture states that any $r$-partite $r$-uniform hypergraph has a vertex cover of size at most $(r - 1)$-times the size of the largest matching. For $r = 2$, the conjecture is simply König's Theorem. It has also been proven for $r = 3$ by Aharoni using a beautiful topological argument. In a separate paper we characterize the extremal examples for the $3$-uniform case of Ryser's Conjecture (i.e., Aharoni's Theorem), and in particular resolve an old conjecture of Lovász for the case of Ryser-extremal $3$-graphs.
Our main result in this paper will provide us with valuable structural information for that characterization. Its proof is based on the observation that link graphs of Ryser-extremal $3$-uniform hypergraphs are exactly the bipartite graphs we study here.

A vector species is a functor from the category of finite sets with bijections to vector spaces; informally, one can view this as a sequence of $S_n$-modules. A Hopf monoid (in the category of vector species) consists of a vector species with unit, counit, product, and coproduct morphisms satisfying several compatibility conditions, analogous to a graded Hopf algebra. We say that a Hopf monoid is strongly linearized if it has a "basis" preserved by its product and coproduct in a certain sense. We prove several equivalent characterizations of this property, and show that any strongly linearized Hopf monoid which is commutative and cocommutative possesses four bases which one can view as analogues of the classical bases of the algebra of symmetric functions. There are natural functors which turn Hopf monoids into graded Hopf algebras, and applying these functors to strongly linearized Hopf monoids produces several notable families of Hopf algebras. For example, in this way we give a simple unified construction of the Hopf algebras of superclass functions attached to the maximal unipotent subgroups of three families of classical Chevalley groups.

Building on early work by Stevo Todorcevic, we describe a theory of stationary subtrees of trees of successor-cardinal height. We define the diagonal union of subsets of a tree, as well as normal ideals on a tree, and we characterize arbitrary subsets of a non-special tree as being either stationary or non-stationary.
We then use this theory to prove the following partition relation for trees:
Main Theorem: Let $κ$ be any infinite regular cardinal, let $ξ$ be any ordinal such that $2^{\left|ξ\right|} < κ$, and let $k$ be any natural number. Then \[ \text{non-$\left(2^{<κ}\right)$-special tree } \to \left(κ+ ξ\right)^2_k. \]
This is a generalization to trees of the Balanced Baumgartner-Hajnal-Todorcevic Theorem, which we recover by applying the above to the cardinal $(2^{<κ})^+$, the simplest example of a non-$(2^{<κ})$-special tree.
As a corollary, we obtain a general result for partially ordered sets:
Theorem: Let $κ$ be any infinite regular cardinal, let $ξ$ be any ordinal such that $2^{\left|ξ\right|} < κ$, and let $k$ be any natural number. Let $P$ be a partially ordered set such that $P \to (2^{<κ})^1_{2^{<κ}}$. Then \[ P \to \left(κ+ ξ\right)^2_k. \]

In 1976, Coffman and Sethi conjectured that a natural extension of LPT list scheduling to the bicriteria scheduling problem of minimizing makespan over flowtime optimal schedules, called LD algorithm, has a simple worst-case performance bound: (5m-2)/(4m-1), where m is the number of machines. We study structure of potential minimal counterexamples to this conjecture and prove that the conjecture holds for the cases (i) n > 5m, (ii) m = 2, (iii) m = 3, and (iv) m greater than or equal to 4, n less than or equal to 3m, where n is the number of jobs. We further conclude that to verify the conjecture, it suffices to analyze the following case: for every m greater than or equal to 4, n is either equal to 4m or 5m.
Graph Automorphisms from the Geometric Viewpoint
An automorphism of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a bijective map $φ$ from $V$ to itself such that $φ(v_i)φ(v_j)\in E$ $\Leftrightarrow$ $v_i v_j\in E$ for any two vertices $v_i$ and $v_j$. Denote by $\mathfrak{G}$ the group consisting of all automorphisms of $G$. Apparently, an automorphism of $G$ can be regarded as a permutation on $[n]=\{1,\ldots,n\}$, provided that $G$ has $n$ vertices. For each permutation $σ$ on $[n]$, there is a natural action on any given vector $\boldsymbol{u}=(u_1,\ldots,u_n)^t\in \mathbb{C}^n$ such that $σ\boldsymbol{u}=(u_{σ^{-1}1},u_{σ^{-1}2},\ldots,u_{σ^{-1} n})^t$, so $σ$ can be viewed as a linear operator on $\mathbb{C}^n$. Accordingly, one can formulate a characterization to the automorphisms of $G$, {\it i.e.,} $σ$ is an automorphism of $G$ if and only if every eigenspace of $\mathbf{A}(G)$ is $σ$-invariant, where $\mathbf{A}(G)$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$. Consequently, every eigenspace of $\mathbf{A}(G)$ is $\mathfrak{G}$-invariant, which is equivalent to that for any eigenvector $\boldsymbol{v}$ of $\mathbf{A}(G)$ corresponding to the eigenvalue $λ$, $\mathrm{span}(\mathfrak{G}\boldsymbol{v})$ is a subspace of the eigenspace $V_λ$. By virtue of the linear representation of the automorphism group $\mathfrak{G}$, we characterize those extremal vectors $\boldsymbol{v}$ in an eigenspace of $\mathbf{A}(G)$ so that $\mathrm{dim}~\mathrm{span}(\mathfrak{G}\boldsymbol{v})$ can attain extremal values, and furthermore, we determine the exact value of $\mathrm{dim}~\mathrm{span}(\mathfrak{G}\boldsymbol{v})$ for any eigenvector $\boldsymbol{v}$ of $\mathbf{A}(G)$.
Covering Partial Cubes with Zones

A partial cube is a graph having an isometric embedding in a hypercube. Partial cubes are characterized by a natural equivalence relation on the edges, whose classes are called zones. The number of zones determines the minimal dimension of a hypercube in which the graph can be embedded. We consider the problem of covering the vertices of a partial cube with the minimum number of zones. The problem admits several special cases, among which are the problem of covering the cells of a line arrangement with a minimum number of lines, and the problem of finding a minimum-size fibre in a bipartite poset. For several such special cases, we give upper and lower bounds on the minimum size of a covering by zones. We also consider the computational complexity of those problems, and establish some hardness results.

Based on the uniform quantified structure, author gives two logic system for graph traversal and graph coloring respectively, moreover shows a new method of cutting graph. Around this model, there are six algorithms in this paper including exact graph traversal, Algebra calculation of natural number, graph partition and graph coloring.

The nonelliptic $\mathsf{A_2}$-webs with $k$ "$+$"s on the top boundary and $3n-2k$ "$-$"s on the bottom boundary combinatorially model the space $\mathsf{Hom}_{\mathfrak{sl}_3}(\mathsf{V}^{\otimes (3n-2k)}, \mathsf{V}^{\otimes k})$ of $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-module maps on tensor powers of the natural $3$-dimensional $\mathfrak{sl}_3$-module $\mathsf{V}$, and they have connections with the combinatorics of Springer varieties. Petersen, Pylyavskyy, and Rhodes showed that the set of such $\mathsf{A_2}$-webs and the set of semistandard tableaux of shape $(3^n)$ and type $\{1^2,\dots,k^2,k+1,\dots, 3n-k\}$ have the same cardinalities. In this work, we use the $\sf{m}$-diagrams introduced by Tymoczko and the Robinson-Schensted correspondence to construct an explicit bijection, different from the one given by Russell, between these two sets. In establishing our result, we show that the pair of standard tableaux constructed using the notion of path depth is the same as the pair constructed from applying the Robinson-Schensted correspondence to a $3\,2\,1$-avoiding permutation. We also obtain a bijection between such pairs of standard tableaux and Westbury's $\mathsf{A_2}$ flow diagrams.
Forcing $k$-repetitions in degree sequences

One of the most basic results in graph theory states that every graph with at least two vertices has two vertices with the same degree. Since there are graphs without $3$ vertices of the same degree, it is natural to ask if for any fixed $k$, every graph $G$ is ``close'' to a graph $G'$ with $k$ vertices of the same degree. Our main result in this paper is that this is indeed the case. Specifically, we show that for any positive integer $k$, there is a constant $C=C(k)$, so that given any graph $G$, one can remove from $G$ at most $C$ vertices and thus obtain a new graph $G'$ that contains at least $\min\{k,|G|-C\}$ vertices of the same degree.
Our main tool is a multidimensional zero-sum theorem for integer sequences, which we prove using an old geometric approach of Alon and Berman.
Most Probably Intersecting Hypergraphs

The celebrated Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem shows that for $n \ge 2k$ the largest intersecting $k$-uniform set family on $[n]$ has size $\binom{n-1}{k-1}$. It is natural to ask how far from intersecting larger set families must be. Katona, Katona and Katona introduced the notion of most probably intersecting families, which maximise the probability of random subfamilies being intersecting.
We study the most probably intersecting problem for $k$-uniform set families. We provide a rough structural characterisation of the most probably intersecting families and, for families of particular sizes, show that the initial segment of the lexicographic order is optimal.
Modeling Limits in Hereditary Classes: Reduction and Application to Trees
Limits of graphs were initiated recently in the two extreme contexts of dense and bounded degree graphs. This led to elegant limiting structures called graphons and graphings. These approach have been unified and generalized by authors in a more general setting using a combination of analytic tools and model theory to FO-limits (and X-limits) and to the notion of modeling. The existence of modeling limits was established for sequences in a bounded degree class and, in addition, to the case of classes of trees with bounded height and of graphs with bounded tree depth. These seemingly very special classes is in fact a key step in the development of limits for more general situations. The natural obstacle for the existence of modeling limit for a monotone class of graphs is the nowhere dense property and it has been conjectured that this is a sufficient condition. Extending earlier results we derive several general results which present a realistic approach to this conjecture. As an example we then prove that the class of all finite trees admits modeling limits.

Some randomized algorithms, used to obtain a random $n^2 \times n^2$ Sudoku matrix, where $n$ is a natural number, is reviewed in this study. Below is described the set $Π_n$ of all $(2n) \times n$ matrices, consisting of elements of the set $\mathbb{Z}_n =\{ 1,2,\ldots ,n\}$, such that every row is a permutation. It is proved that such matrices would be particularly useful in developing efficient algorithms in generating Sudoku matrices. An algorithm to obtain random $Π_n$ matrices is presented in this paper. The algorithms are evaluated according to two criteria - probability evaluation, and time evaluation. This type of criteria is interesting from both theoretical and practical point of view because they are particularly useful in the analysis of computer programs.
Polynomial properties of Jack connection coefficients and generalization of a result by Dénes

This article is devoted to the computation of Jack connection coefficients, a generalization of the connection coefficients of two classical commutative subalgebras of the group algebra of the symmetric group: the class algebra and the double coset algebra. The connection coefficients of these two algebraic structures are of significant interest in the study of Schur and zonal polynomials as well as the irreducible characters of the symmetric group and the zonal spherical functions. Furthermore they play an important role in combinatorics as they give the number of factorizations of a permutation into a product of permutations with given cyclic properties. Usually studied separately, these two families of coefficients share strong similar properties. First (partially) introduced by Goulden and Jackson in 1996, Jack connection coefficients provide a natural unified approach closely related to the theory of Jack polynomials, a family of bases in the ring of symmetric functions indexed by a parameter αthat generalizes both Schur (case α= 1) and zonal polynomials (case α= 2). Jack connection coefficients are also directly linked to Jack characters, a general view of the characters of the symmetric group and the zonal spherical functions. Goulden and Jackson conjectured that these coefficients are polynomials in αwith nice combinatorial properties, the so-called Matchings-Jack conjecture. In this paper, we use the theory of Jack symmetric functions and the Laplace Beltrami operator to show the polynomial properties of Jack connection coefficients in some important cases. We also provide explicit formulations including notably a generalization of a classical formula of Dénes for the number of minimal factorizations of a permutation into transpositions.
Maximum Intersecting Families of Permutations
It was first shown by Cameron and Ku that the group $G=Sym(n)$ has the strict EKR property. Then Godsil and Meagher presented an entirely different proof of this fact using some algebraic properties of the symmetric group. A similar method was employed to prove that the projective general linear group $PGL(2,q)$, with its natural action on the projective line $\mathbb{P}_q$, has the strict EKR property. The main objective in this thesis is to formally introduce this method, which we call the module method, and show that this provides a standard way to prove Erdos-Ko-Rado theorems for other permutation groups. We then, along with proving Erdos-Ko-Rado theorems for various groups, use this method to prove some permutation groups have the strict EKR property. We will also show that this method can be useful in characterizing the maximum independent sets of some Cayley graphs. To explain the module method, we need some facts from representation theory of groups, in particular, the symmetric group. We will provide the reader with a sufficient level of background from representation theory as well as graph theory and linear algebraic facts about graphs.
Topology of the view complex

In this paper we consider a family of simplicial complexes, which we call the view complexes. Our choice of objects of study is motivated by theoretical distributed computing, since the view complex is a key simplicial construction used for protocol complexes in the snapshot computational model. We show that the view complex $\view$ can be collapsed to the well-known complex $χ(Δ^n)$, called standard chromatic subdivision of a simplex, and that $χ(Δ^n)$ is itself collapsible. Furthermore, we show that the collapses can be performed simultaneously in entire orbits of the natural symmetric group action. Our results yield a purely combinatorial and constructive understanding of the topology of view complexes, at the same time as they enhance our knowledge about the standard chromatic subdivision of a simplex.
On the roots of $σ$-polynomials

Given a graph $G$ of order $n$, the $σ$-$polynomial$ of $G$ is the generating function $σ(G,x) = \sum a_{i}x^{i}$ where $a_{i}$ is the number of partitions of the vertex set of $G$ into $i$ nonempty independent sets. Such polynomials arise in a natural way from chromatic polynomials. Brenti [1] proved that $σ$-polynomials of graphs with chromatic number at least $n-2$ had all real roots, and conjectured the same held for chromatic number $n-3$. We affirm this conjecture.
A Statistical Model of Current Loops and Magnetic Monopoles

We formulate a natural model of current loops and magnetic monopoles for arbitrary planar graphs, which we call the monopole-dimer model, and express the partition function of this model as a determinant. We then extend the method of Kasteleyn and Temperley-Fisher to calculate the partition function exactly in the case of rectangular grids. This partition function turns out to be a square of the partition function of an emergent monomer-dimer model when the grid sizes are even. We use this formula to calculate the local monopole density, free energy and entropy exactly. Our technique is a novel determinantal formula for the partition function of a model of vertices and loops for arbitrary graphs.

The set of dominant regions of the $k$-Catalan arrangement of a crystallographic root system $Φ$ is a well-studied object enumerated by the Fuß-Catalan number $Cat^{(k)}(Φ)$. It is natural to refine this enumeration by considering floors and ceilings of dominant regions. A conjecture of Armstrong states that counting dominant regions by their number of floors of a certain height gives the same distribution as counting dominant regions by their number of ceilings of the same height. We prove this conjecture using a bijection that provides even more refined enumerative information.

A subtraction-free definition of the big Witt vector construction was recently given by the first author. This allows one to define the big Witt vectors of any semiring. Here we give an explicit combinatorial description of the big Witt vectors of the Boolean semiring. We do the same for two variants of the big Witt vector construction: the Schur Witt vectors and the $p$-typical Witt vectors. We use this to give an explicit description of the Schur Witt vectors of the natural numbers, which can be viewed as the classification of totally positive power series with integral coefficients, first obtained by Davydov. We also determine the cardinalities of some Witt vector algebras with entries in various concrete arithmetic semirings.

In this paper we apply a group action approach to the study of Erd\H os-Falconer type problems in vector spaces over finite fields and use it to obtain non-trivial exponents for the distribution of simplices. We prove that there exists $s_0(d)<d$ such that if $E \subset {\mathbb F}_q^d$, $d \ge 2$, with $|E| \ge Cq^{s_0}$, then $|T^d_d(E)| \ge C'q^{d+1 \choose 2}$, where $T^d_k(E)$ denotes the set of congruence classes of $k$-dimensional simplices determined by $k+1$-tuples of points from $E$. Non-trivial exponents were previously obtained by Chapman, Erdogan, Hart, Iosevich and Koh (\cite{CEHIK12}) for $T^d_k(E)$ with $2 \leq k \leq d-1$. A non-trivial result for $T^2_2(E)$ in the plane was obtained by Bennett, Iosevich and Pakianathan (\cite{BIP12}). These results are significantly generalized and improved in this paper. In particular, we establish the Wolff exponent $\frac{4}{3}$, previously established in \cite{CEHIK12} for the $q\equiv3\mbox{ mod }4$ case to the case $q\equiv1\mbox{ mod }4$, and this results in a new sum-product type inequality. We also obtain non-trivial results for subsets of the sphere in ${\mathbb F}_q^d$, where previous methods have yielded nothing. The key to our approach is a group action perspective which quickly leads to natural and effective formulae in the style of the classical Mattila integral from geometric measure theory.
