Fragmenting any Parallelepiped into a Signed Tiling
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry, 2024 • View Publication • BIB
It is broadly known that any parallelepiped tiles space by translating copies of itself along its edges. In earlier work relating to higher-dimensional sandpile groups, the second author discovered a novel construction which fragments the parallelpiped into a collection of smaller tiles. These tiles fill space with the same symmetry as the larger parallelepiped. Their volumes are equal to the components of the multi-row Laplace determinant expansion, so this construction only works when all these signs are non-negative (or non-positive). In this work, we extend the construction to work for all parallelepipeds, without requiring the non-negative condition. This naturally gives tiles with negative volume, which we understand to mean canceling out tiles with positive volume. In fact, with this cancellation, we prove that every point in space is contained in exactly one more tile with positive volume than tile with negative volume. This is a natural definition for a signed tiling. Our main technique is to show that the net number of signed tiles doesn't change as a point moves through space. This is a relatively indirect proof method, and the underlying structure of these tilings remains mysterious.

Notes on Reeb graphs of real algebraic functions which may not be planar
The Reeb graph of a smooth function is a graph being a natural quotient space of the manifold of the domain and the space of all connected components of preimages. Such a combinatorial and topological object roughly and compactly represents the manifold. Since the proposal by Sharko in 2006, reconstructing nice smooth functions and the manifolds from finite graphs in such a way that the Reeb graphs are the graphs has been important. The author has launched new studies on this, discussing construction of real algebraic functions. We concentrate on Reeb graphs we cannot realize as (natural) planar graphs here. Previously the graphs were planar and embedded in the plane naturally.

Katětov order between Hindman, Ramsey, van der Waerden and summable ideals
A family I of subsets of a set X is an ideal on X if it is closed under taking subsets and finite unions of its elements. An ideal I on X is below an ideal J on Y in the Katetov order if there is a function $f:Y\to X$ such that $f^{-1}[A]\in J$ for every $A\in I$. We show that the Hindman ideal, the Ramsey ideal and the summable ideal are pairwise incomparable in the Katetov order, where * the Ramsey ideal consists of those sets of pairs of natural numbers which do not contain a set of all pairs of any infinite set (equivalently do not contain, in a sense, any infinite complete subgraph), * the Hindman ideal consists of those sets of natural numbers which do not contain any infinite set together with all finite sums of its members (equivalently do not contain IP-sets that are considered in Ergodic Ramsey theory), * the summable ideal consists of those sets of natural numbers such that the series of the reciprocals of its members is convergent. Moreover, we show that in the Katetov order the above mentioned ideals are not below the van der Waerden ideal that consists of those sets of natural numbers which do not contain arithmetic progressions of arbitrary finite length.

Uniform sets with few progressions via colorings
Published in Math. Proc. Cambridge Philos. Soc. 179 (2025), 79--103 • View Publication • BIB
Ruzsa asked whether there exist Fourier-uniform subsets of $\mathbb Z/N\mathbb Z$ with density $α$ and 4-term arithmetic progression (4-AP) density at most $α^C$, for arbitrarily large $C$. Gowers constructed Fourier uniform sets with density $α$ and 4-AP density at most $α^{4+c}$ for some small constant $c>0$. We show that an affirmative answer to Ruzsa's question would follow from the existence of an $N^{o(1)}$-coloring of $[N]$ without symmetrically colored 4-APs. For a broad and natural class of constructions of Fourier-uniform subsets of $\mathbb Z/N\mathbb Z$, we show that Ruzsa's question is equivalent to our arithmetic Ramsey question. We prove analogous results for all even-length APs. For each odd $k\geq 5$, we show that there exist $U^{k-2}$-uniform subsets of $\mathbb Z/N\mathbb Z$ with density $α$ and $k$-AP density at most $α^{c_k \log(1/α)}$. We also prove generalizations to arbitrary one-dimensional patterns.

Hochschild polytopes
Published in Math. Ann. 392(2):2395-2441, 2025 • View Publication • BIB
The $(m,n)$-multiplihedron is a polytope whose faces correspond to $m$-painted $n$-trees, and whose oriented skeleton is the Hasse diagram of the rotation lattice on binary $m$-painted $n$-trees. Deleting certain inequalities from the facet description of the $(m,n)$-multiplihedron, we construct the $(m,n)$-Hochschild polytope whose faces correspond to $m$-lighted $n$-shades, and whose oriented skeleton is the Hasse diagram of the rotation lattice on unary $m$-lighted $n$-shades. Moreover, there is a natural shadow map from $m$-painted $n$-trees to $m$-lighted $n$-shades, which turns out to define a meet semilattice morphism of rotation lattices. In particular, when $m=1$, our Hochschild polytope is a deformed permutahedron whose oriented skeleton is the Hasse diagram of the Hochschild lattice.

On the Ratio of Shannon Numbers of Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $Γ$ be a function that maps two arbitrary graphs $G$ and $H$ to a non-negative real number such that $$α(G^{\boxtimes n})\leq α(H^{\boxtimes n})Γ(G,H)^n$$ where $n$ is any natural number and $G^{\boxtimes n}$ is the strong product of $G$ with itself $n$ times. We establish the equivalence of two different approaches for finding such a function $Γ$. The common solution obtained through either approach is termed ``the relative fractional independence number of a graph $G$ with respect to another graph $H$". We show this function by $α^*(G|H)$ and discuss some of its properties. In particular, we show that $α^*(G|H)\geq \frac{X(G)}{X(H)} \geq \frac{1}{α^*(H|G)},$ where $X(G)$ can be the independence number, the Shannon capacity, the fractional independence number, the Lovász number, or the Schrijver's or Szegedy's variants of the Lovász number of a graph $G$. This inequality is the first explicit non-trivial upper bound on the ratio of the invariants of two arbitrary graphs, as mentioned earlier, which can also be used to obtain upper or lower bounds for these invariants. As explicit applications, we present new upper bounds for the ratio of the Shannon capacity of two Cayley graphs and compute new lower bounds on the Shannon capacity of certain Johnson graphs (yielding the exact value of their Haemers number). Moreover, we show that $α^*(G|H)$ can be used to present a stronger version of the well-known No-Homomorphism Lemma.
Computing Subset Vertex Covers in $H$-Free Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider a natural generalization of Vertex Cover: the Subset Vertex Cover problem, which is to decide for a graph $G=(V,E)$, a subset $T\subseteq V$ and integer $k$, if $V$ has a subset $S$ of size at most $k$, such that $S$ contains at least one end-vertex of every edge incident to a vertex of $T$. A graph is $H$-free if it does not contain $H$ as an induced subgraph. We solve two open problems from the literature by proving that Subset Vertex Cover is NP-complete on subcubic (claw,diamond)-free planar graphs and on $2$-unipolar graphs, a subclass of $2P_3$-free weakly chordal graphs. Our results show for the first time that Subset Vertex Cover is computationally harder than Vertex Cover (under P $\neq$ NP). We also prove new polynomial time results, some of which follow from a reduction to Vertex Cover restricted to classes of probe graphs. We first give a dichotomy on graphs where $G[T]$ is $H$-free. Namely, we show that Subset Vertex Cover is polynomial-time solvable on graphs $G$, for which $G[T]$ is $H$-free, if $H=sP_1+tP_2$ and NP-complete otherwise. Moreover, we prove that Subset Vertex Cover is polynomial-time solvable for $(sP_1+P_2+P_3)$-free graphs and bounded mim-width graphs. By combining our new results with known results we obtain a partial complexity classification for Subset Vertex Cover on $H$-free graphs.

Chip-firing on graphs of groups

We define the Laplacian matrix and the Jacobian group of a finite graph of groups. We prove analogues of the matrix tree theorem and the class number formula for the order of the Jacobian of a graph of groups. Given a group $G$ acting on a graph $X$, we define natural pushforward and pullback maps between the Jacobian groups of $X$ and the quotient graph of groups $X/\!/G$. For the case $G=\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$, we also prove a combinatorial formula for the order of the kernel of the pushforward map.

Hyperbolic polynomials and starved polytopes
We study sets of univariate hyperbolic polynomials that share the same first few coefficients and show that they have a natural combinatorial description akin to that of polytopes. We define a stratification of such sets in terms of root arrangements of hyperbolic polynomials and show that any stratum is either empty, a point or of maximal dimension and in the latter case we characterise its relative interior. This is used to show that the poset of strata is a graded, atomic and coatomic lattice and to provide an algorithm for computing which root arrangements are realised in such sets of hyperbolic polynomials.

A generalization of formal multiple zeta values related to multiple Eisenstein series and multiple q-zeta values
Published • View Publication • BIB
We present the $τ$-invariant balanced quasi-shuffle algebra $\mathcal{G}^{\operatorname{f}}$, whose elements formalize (combinatorial) multiple Eisenstein series as well as multiple q-zeta values. In particular, $\mathcal{G}^{\operatorname{f}}$ has natural maps into these two algebras, and we expect these maps to be isomorphisms. Racinet studied the algebra $\mathcal{Z}^f$ of formal multiple zeta values by examining the corresponding affine scheme DM. Similarly, we present the affine scheme BM corresponding to the algebra $\mathcal{G}^{\operatorname{f}}$. We show that Racinet's affine scheme DM embeds into our affine scheme BM. This leads to a projection from the algebra $\mathcal{G}^{\operatorname{f}}$ onto $\mathcal{Z}^f$. Via the above natural maps, this projection corresponds to extracting the constant terms of multiple Eisenstein series or the limit $q\to1$ of multiple q-zeta values.

The landscape of compressibility measures for two-dimensional data
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper we extend to two-dimensional data two recently introduced one-dimensional compressibility measures: the $γ$ measure defined in terms of the smallest string attractor, and the $δ$ measure defined in terms of the number of distinct substrings of the input string. Concretely, we introduce the two-dimensional measures $γ_{2D}$ and $δ_{2D}$, as natural generalizations of $γ$ and $δ$, and we initiate the study of their properties. Among other things, we prove that $δ_{2D}$ is monotone and can be computed in linear time, and we show that, although it is still true that $δ_{2D} \leq γ_{2D}$, the gap between the two measures can be $Ω(\sqrt{n})$ and therefore asymptotically larger than the gap between $γ$ and $δ$. To complete the scenario of two-dimensional compressibility measures, we introduce the measure $b_{2D}$ which generalizes to two dimensions the notion of optimal parsing. We prove that, somewhat surprisingly, the relationship between $b_{2D}$ and $γ_{2D}$ is significantly different than in the one-dimensional case. As an application of our results we provide the first analysis of the space usage of the two-dimensional block tree introduced in [Brisaboa et al., Two-dimensional block trees, The computer Journal, 2024]. Our analysis shows that the space usage can be bounded in terms of both $γ_{2D}$ and $δ_{2D}$. Finally, using insights from our analysis, we design the first linear time and space algorithm for constructing the two-dimensional block tree for arbitrary matrices.

On the structure of cellular pseudomanifolds
In this paper we study the structure of cellular pseudomanifolds (aka abstract polytopes). These are natural combinatorial generalisations of polytopal spheres (i.e., boundary complexes of convex polytopes). This class is closed under natural notions of duality and product. We show that they are also closed under an operation of direct product. Any cellular pseudomanifold and it's dual have homeomorphic geometric carriers, while the geometric carrier of the product of two of them is homeomorphic to the product of the carriers of the factors. The excess of a cellular pseudomanifold is defined as the non-negative integer $n - d - 2$ where $d$ is the dimension and $n$ is the number of vertices. We completely classify the cellular pseudo manifolds of excess $< 2$, and make some progress towards classifying those of excess 2.

Combinatorially rich sets in partial semigroups
Published • View Publication • BIB
There are several notions of size for semigroups that have natural analogues for partial semigroups. Among these are thick, syndetic, central, piecewise syndetic, IP, J, and the more recently introduced notion of combinatorially rich, abbreviated CR. We investigate the notion of CR set for adequate partial semigroups, its relation to other notions, especially J sets, and some surprising differences among them.

Sharp Hypercontractivity for Global Functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
For a function $f$ on the hypercube $\{0,1\}^n$ with Fourier expansion $f=\sum_{S\subseteq[n]}\hat f(S)χ_S$, the hypercontractive inequality allows bounding norms of $T_ρf=\sum_Sρ^{|S|} \hat f(S)χ_S$ in terms of norms of $f$. If $f$ is Boolean-valued, the level-$d$ inequality allows bounding the norm of $f^{=d}=\sum_{|S|=d}\hat f(S)χ_S$ in terms of $E[f]$. These inequalities play a central role in analysis of Boolean functions and its applications. While both inequalities hold in a sharp form when the hypercube is endowed with the uniform measure, they do not hold for more general discrete product spaces, and finding a `natural' generalization was a long-standing open problem. In 2024, Keevash et al.~obtained a hypercontractive inequality for general discrete product spaces, that holds for functions which are `global' -- namely, are not significantly affected by a restriction of a small set of coordinates. This hypercontractive inequality is not sharp, which precludes applications to $S_n$ and to other settings where sharpness of the bound is crucial. Also, no sharp level-$d$ inequality for global functions over general discrete product spaces is known. We obtain sharp versions of the hypercontractive inequality and of the level-$d$ inequality for this setting. Our inequalities open the way for diverse applications to extremal set theory, group theory, theoretical computer science, and number theory. We demonstrate this by proving quantitative bounds on the size of intersecting families of sets and vectors under weak symmetry conditions and by describing numerous applications that were obtained using our results -- to the study of functions over $S_n$, including hypercontractivity and level-$d$ inequalities, character bounds, variants of Roth's theorem and of Bogolyubov's lemma and diameter bounds, and an application to the Furstenberg-S{á}rk{ö}zy problem.
On $T$-invariant subvarieties of symplectic Grassmannians and representability of rank $2$ symplectic matroids over ${\mathbb C}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
For the symplectic Grassmannian $\text{SpG}(2,2n)$ of $2$-dimensional isotropic subspaces in a $2n$-dimensional vector space over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero endowed with a symplectic form and with the natural action of an $n$-dimensional torus $T$ on it, we characterize its irreducible $T$-invariant subvarieties. This characterization is in terms of symplectic Coxeter matroids, and we use this result to give a complete characterization of the symplectic matroids of rank $2$ which are representable over $\mathbb{C}$.

Scalable tensor methods for nonuniform hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
While multilinear algebra appears natural for studying the multiway interactions modeled by hypergraphs, tensor methods for general hypergraphs have been stymied by theoretical and practical barriers. A recently proposed adjacency tensor is applicable to nonuniform hypergraphs, but is prohibitively costly to form and analyze in practice. We develop tensor times same vector (TTSV) algorithms for this tensor which improve complexity from $O(n^r)$ to a low-degree polynomial in $r$, where $n$ is the number of vertices and $r$ is the maximum hyperedge size. Our algorithms are implicit, avoiding formation of the order $r$ adjacency tensor. We demonstrate the flexibility and utility of our approach in practice by developing tensor-based hypergraph centrality and clustering algorithms. We also show these tensor measures offer complementary information to analogous graph-reduction approaches on data, and are also able to detect higher-order structure that many existing matrix-based approaches provably cannot.

Coagulation, non-associative algebras and binary trees
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider the classical Smoluchowski coagulation equation with a general frequency kernel. We show that there exists a natural deterministic solution expansion in the non-associative algebra generated by the convolution product of the coalescence term. The non-associative solution expansion is equivalently represented by binary trees. We demonstrate that the existence of such solutions corresponds to establishing the compatibility of two binary-tree generating procedures, by: (i) grafting together the roots of all pairs of order-compatibile trees at preceding orders, or (ii) attaching binary branches to all free branches of trees at the previous order. We then show that the solution represents a linearised flow, and also establish a new numerical simulation method based on truncation of the solution tree expansion and approximating the integral terms at each order by fast Fourier transform. In particular, for general separable frequency kernels, the complexity of the method is linear-loglinear in the number of spatial modes/nodes.

Genus Permutations and Genus Partitions
Published in Enumerative Combinatorics and Applications 5:1 (2025) Article S2R5 • View Publication • BIB
For a given permutation or set partition there is a natural way to assign a genus. Counting all permutations or partitions of a fixed genus according to cycle lengths or block sizes, respectively, is the main content of this article. After a variable transformation, the generating series are rational functions with poles located at the ramification points in the new variable. The generating series for any genus is given explicitly for permutations and up to genus 2 for set partitions. Extending the topological structure not just by the genus but also by adding more boundaries, we derive the generating series of non-crossing partitions on the cylinder from known results of non-crossing permutations on the cylinder. Most, but not all, outcomes of this article are special cases of already known results, however they are not represented in this way in the literature, which however seems to be the canonical way. To make the article as accessible as possible, we avoid going into details into the explicit connections to Topological Recursion and Free Probability Theory, where the original motivation came from.

On the almost-palindromic width of free groups
Published in J. Algebra 659 (2024), 475-481 • View Publication • BIB
We answer a question of Bardakov (Kourovka Notebook, Problem 19.8) which asks for the existence of a pair of natural numbers $(c, m)$ with the property that every element in the free group on the two-element set $\{a, b\}$ can be represented as a concatenation of $c$, or fewer, $m$-almost-palindromes in letters $a^{\pm 1}, b^{\pm 1}$. Here, an $m$-almost-palindrome is a word which can be obtained from a palindrome by changing at most $m$ letters. We show that no such pair $(c, m)$ exists. In fact, we show that the analogous result holds for all non-abelian free groups.

Extrema of local mean and local density in a tree
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a tree T, one can define the local mean at some subtree S to be the average order of subtrees containing S. It is natural to ask which subtree of order k achieves the maximal/minimal local mean among all the subtrees of the same order and what properties it has. We call such subtrees k-maximal subtrees. Wagner and Wang showed in 2016 that a 1- maximal subtree is a vertex of degree 1 or 2. This paper shows that for any integer k = 1, . . . , |T| , a k-maximal subtree has at most one leaf whose degree is greater than 2 and at least one leaf whose degree is at most 2. Furthermore, we show that a k-maximal subtree has a leaf of degree greater than 2 only when all its other leaves are leaves in T as well. In the second part, this paper introduces the local density as a normalization of local means, for the sake of comparing subtrees of different orders, and shows that the local density at subtree S is lower-bounded by 1/2 with equality if and only if S contains the core of T. On the other hand, local density can be arbitrarily close to 1.
