On the partition dimension of unicyclic graphs
Given an ordered partition $Π=\{P_1,P_2, ...,P_t\}$ of the vertex set $V$ of a connected graph $G=(V,E)$, the \emph{partition representation} of a vertex $v\in V$ with respect to the partition $Π$ is the vector $r(v|Π)=(d(v,P_1),d(v,P_2),...,d(v,P_t))$, where $d(v,P_i)$ represents the distance between the vertex $v$ and the set $P_i$. A partition $Π$ of $V$ is a \emph{resolving partition} if different vertices of $G$ have different partition representations, i.e., for every pair of vertices $u,v\in V$, $r(u|Π)\ne r(v|Π)$. The \emph{partition dimension} of $G$ is the minimum number of sets in any resolving partition for $G$. In this paper we obtain several tight bounds on the partition dimension of unicyclic graphs.

On the Locating Chromatic Number of the Cartesian Product of Graphs
Let $c$ be a proper $k$-coloring of a connected graph $G$ and $Π=(C_1,C_2,...,C_k)$ be an ordered partition of $V(G)$ into the resulting color classes. For a vertex $v$ of $G$, the color code of $v$ with respect to $Π$ is defined to be the ordered $k$-tuple $c_{{}_Π}(v):=(d(v,C_1),d(v,C_2),...,d(v,C_k)),$ where $d(v,C_i)=\min\{d(v,x) | x\in C_i\}, 1\leq i\leq k$. If distinct vertices have distinct color codes, then $c$ is called a locating coloring. The minimum number of colors needed in a locating coloring of $G$ is the locating chromatic number of $G$, denoted by $\Cchi_{{}_L}(G)$. In this paper, we study the locating chromatic number of grids, the cartesian product of paths and complete graphs, and the cartesian product of two complete graphs.

Let $c$ be a proper $k$-coloring of a connected graph $G$ and $Π=(C_1,C_2,...,C_k)$ be an ordered partition of $V(G)$ into the resulting color classes. For a vertex $v$ of $G$, the color code of $v$ with respect to $Π$ is defined to be the ordered $k$-tuple $$c_{{}_Π}(v):=(d(v,C_1),d(v,C_2),...,d(v,C_k)),$$ where $d(v,C_i)=\min\{d(v,x) |x\in C_i\}, 1\leq i\leq k$. If distinct vertices have distinct color codes, then $c$ is called a locating coloring. The minimum number of colors needed in a locating coloring of $G$ is the locating chromatic number of $G$, denoted by $\Cchi_{{}_L}(G)$. In this paper, we study the locating chromatic number of Kneser graphs. First, among some other results we show that $\Cchi_{{}_L}(KG(n,2))=n-1$ for all $n\geq 5$. Then, we prove that $\Cchi_{{}_L}(KG(n,k))\leq n-1$, when $n\geq k^2$. Moreover, we present some bounds for the locating chromatic number of odd graphs.
The partition dimension of corona product graphs
Given a set of vertices $S=\{v_1,v_2,...,v_k\}$ of a connected graph $G$, the metric representation of a vertex $v$ of $G$ with respect to $S$ is the vector $r(v|S)=(d(v,v_1),d(v,v_2),...,d(v,v_k))$, where $d(v,v_i)$, $i\in \{1,...,k\}$ denotes the distance between $v$ and $v_i$. $S$ is a resolving set of $G$ if for every pair of vertices $u,v$ of $G$, $r(u|S)\ne r(v|S)$. The metric dimension $dim(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum cardinality of any resolving set of $G$. Given an ordered partition $Π=\{P_1,P_2, ...,P_t\}$ of vertices of a connected graph $G$, the partition representation of a vertex $v$ of $G$, with respect to the partition $Π$ is the vector $r(v|Π)=(d(v,P_1),d(v,P_2),...,d(v,P_t))$, where $d(v,P_i)$, $1\leq i\leq t$, represents the distance between the vertex $v$ and the set $P_i$, that is $d(v,P_i)=\min_{u\in P_i}\{d(v,u)\}$. $Π$ is a resolving partition for $G$ if for every pair of vertices $u,v$ of $G$, $r(u|Π)\ne r(v|Π)$. The partition dimension $pd(G)$ of $G$ is the minimum number of sets in any resolving partition for $G$. Let $G$ and $H$ be two graphs of order $n_1$ and $n_2$ respectively. The corona product $G\odot H$ is defined as the graph obtained from $G$ and $H$ by taking one copy of $G$ and $n_1$ copies of $H$ and then joining by an edge, all the vertices from the $i^{th}$-copy of $H$ with the $i^{th}$-vertex of $G$. Here we study the relationship between $pd(G\odot H)$ and several parameters of the graphs $G\odot H$, $G$ and $H$, including $dim(G\odot H)$, $pd(G)$ and $pd(H)$.

Let $G=(V,E)$ be a connected graph. The distance between two vertices $u,v\in V$, denoted by $d(u, v)$, is the length of a shortest $u-v$ path in $G$. The distance between a vertex $v\in V$ and a subset $P\subset V$ is defined as $min\{d(v, x): x \in P\}$, and it is denoted by $d(v, P)$. An ordered partition $\{P_1,P_2, ...,P_t\}$ of vertices of a graph $G$, is a \emph{resolving partition}of $G$, if all the distance vectors $(d(v,P_1),d(v,P_2),...,d(v,P_t))$ are different. The \emph{partition dimension} of $G$, denoted by $pd(G)$, is the minimum number of sets in any resolving partition of $G$. In this article we study the partition dimension of Cartesian product graphs. More precisely, we show that for all pairs of connected graphs $G, H$, $pd(G\times H)\le pd(G)+pd(H)$ and $pd(G\times H)\le pd(G)+dim(H).$ Consequently, we show that $pd(G\times H)\le dim(G)+dim(H)+1.$

Let v(n) denote the number of compositions (ordered partitions) of a positive integer n into powers of 2. It appears that the function v(n) satisfies many congruences modulo 2^N. For example, for every integer B there exists (as k tends to infinity) the limit of v(2^k+B) in the 2-adic topology. The parity of v(n) obeys a simple rule. In this paper we extend this result to higher powers of 2. In particular, we prove that for each positive integer N there exists a finite table which lists all the possible cases of this sequence modulo 2^N. One of our main results claims that v(n) is divisible by 2^N for almost all n, however large the value of N is.

We study statistics on ordered set partitions whose generating functions are related to $p,q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind. The main purpose of this paper is to provide bijective proofs of all the conjectures of \stein (Arxiv:math.CO/0605670). Our basic idea is to encode ordered partitions by a kind of path diagrams and explore the rich combinatorial properties of the latter structure. We also give a partition version of MacMahon's theorem on the equidistribution of the statistics inversion number and major index on words.

Let c^{k,l}(n) be the number of compositions (ordered partitions) of the integer n whose Ferrers diagram fits inside a k-by-l rectangle. The purpose of this note is to give a simple, algebraic proof of a conjecture of Vatter that the sequence c^{k,l}(0), c^{k,l}(1), ..., c^{k,l}(kl) is unimodal. The problem of giving a combinatorial proof of this fact is discussed, but is still open.

A bijection is presented between (1): partitions with conditions $f_j+f_{j+1}\leq k-1$ and $ f_1\leq i-1$, where $f_j$ is the frequency of the part $j$ in the partition, and (2): sets of $k-1$ ordered partitions $(n^{(1)}, n^{(2)}, ..., n^{(k-1)})$ such that $n^{(j)}_\ell \geq n^{(j)}_{\ell+1} + 2j$ and $ n^{(j)}_{m_j} \geq j+ {\rm max} (j-i+1,0)+ 2j (m_{j+1}+... + m_{k-1})$, where $m_j$ is the number of parts in $n^{(j)}$. This bijection entails an elementary and constructive proof of the Andrews multiple-sum enumerating partitions with frequency conditions. A very natural relation between the $k-1$ ordered partitions and restricted paths is also presented, which reveals our bijection to be a modification of Bressoud's version of the Burge correspondence.
Statistics on ordered partitions of sets
We introduce several statistics on ordered partitions of sets, that is, set partitions where the blocks are permuted arbitrarily. The distribution of these statistics is closely related to the q-Stirling numbers of the second kind. Some of the statistics are generalizations of known statistics on set partitions, but others are entirely new. All the new ones are sums of two statistics, inspired by statistics on permutations, where one of the two statistics is based on a certain partial ordering of the blocks of a partition.

Schur-Szego composition of polynomials of degree N introduces an interesting semigroup structure on polynomial spaces. In this note we show how it interacts with the stratification of polynomials according to the multiplicity of their zeros and present the induced semigroup structure on the set of all ordered partitions of N.
Statistics on Ordered Partitions of Sets and q-Stirling Numbers
An ordered partition of [n]:={1,2,..., n} is a sequence of its disjoint subsets whose union is [n]. The number of ordered partitions of [n] with k blocks is k!S(n,k), where S(n,k) is the Stirling number of second kind. In this paper we prove some refinements of this formula by showing that the generating function of some statistics on the set of ordered partitions of [n] with k blocks is a natural $q$-analogue of k!S(n,k). In particular, we prove several conjectures of Steingrímsson. To this end, we construct a mapping from ordered partitions to walks in some digraphs and then, thanks to transfer-matrix method, we determine the corresponding generating functions by determinantal computations.

In this paper, we prove results on enumerations of sets of Rota-Baxter words in a finite number of generators and a finite number of unary operators. Rota-Baxter words are words formed by concatenating generators and images of words under Rota-Baxter operators. Under suitable conditions, they form canonical bases of free Rota-Baxter algebras and are studied recently in relation to combinatorics, number theory, renormalization in quantum field theory, and operads. Enumeration of a basis is often a first step to choosing a data representation in implementation. Our method applies some simple ideas from formal languages and compositions (ordered partitions) of an integer. We first settle the case of one generator and one operator where both have exponent 1 (the idempotent case). Some integer sequences related to these sets of Rota-Baxter words are known and connected to other combinatorial sequences, such as the Catalan numbers, and others are new. The recurrences satisfied by the generating series of these sequences prompt us to discover an efficient algorithm to enumerate the canonical basis of certain free Rota-Baxter algebras. More general sets of Rota-Baxter words are enumerated with summation techniques related to compositions of integers.
Pattern avoidance in compositions and multiset permutations

We study pattern avoidance by combinatorial objects other than permutations, namely by ordered partitions of an integer and by permutations of a multiset. In the former case we determine the generating function explicitly, for integer compositions of n that avoid a given pattern of length 3 and we show that the answer is the same for all such patterns. We also show that the number of multiset permutations that avoid a given three-letter pattern is the same for all such patterns, thereby extending and refining earlier results of Albert, Aldred et al., and by Atkinson, Walker and Linton. Further, the number of permutations of a multiset S, with a_i copies of i for i = 1, ..., k, that avoid a given permutation pattern in S_3 is a symmetric function of the a_i's, and we will give here a bijective proof of this fact first for the pattern (123), and then for all patterns in S_3 by using a recently discovered bijection of Amy N. Myers.

We present a new identity involving compositions (i.e. ordered partitions of natural numbers). The Formula has its origin in complex dynamical systems and appears when counting, in the polynomial family $\{f_c:z \mapsto z^d + c \}$, periodic critical orbits with equivalent itineraries. We give two different proofs of the identity; one following the original approach in dynamics and another with purely combinatorial methods.
