Convex Rank Tests and Semigraphoids

Convex rank tests are partitions of the symmetric group which have desirable geometric properties. The statistical tests defined by such partitions involve counting all permutations in the equivalence classes. Each class consists of the linear extensions of a partially ordered set specified by data. Our methods refine existing rank tests of non-parametric statistics, such as the sign test and the runs test, and are useful for exploratory analysis of ordinal data. We establish a bijection between convex rank tests and probabilistic conditional independence structures known as semigraphoids. The subclass of submodular rank tests is derived from faces of the cone of submodular functions, or from Minkowski summands of the permutohedron. We enumerate all small instances of such rank tests. Of particular interest are graphical tests, which correspond to both graphical models and to graph associahedra.

The aim of the present paper is to investigate the half-spaces in the convexity structure of all quasiorders on a given set and to use them in an alternative approach to classical order dimension. The main result states that linear orders can almost always be replaced by half-space quasiorders in the definition of the dimension of a partially ordered set.
On the elementary symmetric functions of a sum of matrices

Often in mathematics it is useful to summarize a multivariate phenomenon with a single number and in fact, the determinant -- which is represented by det -- is one of the simplest cases. In fact, this number it is defined only for square matrices and a lot of its properties are very well-known. For instance, the determinant is a multiplicative function, i.e. det(AB)=detA detB, but it is not, in general, an additive function. Another interesting function in the matrix analysis is the characteristic polynomial -- in fact, given a matrix A, this function is defined by $p_A(t)=det(tI-A)$ where I is the identity matrix -- which elements are, up a sign, the elementary symmetric functions associated to the eigenvalues of the matrix A. In the present paper new expressions related with the determinant of sum of matrices and the elementary symmetric functions are given. Moreover, the connection with the Mobius function and the partial ordered sets (poset) is presented. Finally, a problem related with the determinant of sum of matrices is solved.

A method of embedding partially ordered sets into linear spaces is presented. The problem of finding all orthocomplementations in a finite lattice is reduced to a linear programming problem.
Nonisomorphic Ordered Sets with Arbitrarily Many Ranks That Produce Equal Decks
We prove that for any $n$ there is a pair $(P_1 ^n , P_2 ^n )$ of nonisomorphic ordered sets such that $P_1 ^n $ and $P_2 ^n $ have equal maximal and minimal decks, equal neighborhood decks, and there are $n+1$ ranks $k_0 , \ldots , k_n $ such that for each $i$ the decks obtained by removing the points of rank $k_i $ are equal. The ranks $k_1 , \ldots , k_n $ do not contain extremal elements and at each of the other ranks there are elements whose removal will produce isomorphic cards. Moreover, we show that such sets can be constructed such that only for ranks $1$ and $2$, both without extremal elements, the decks obtained by removing the points of rank $r_i $ are not equal.
An update on the middle levels problem

The middle levels problem is to find a Hamilton cycle in the middle levels, M_{2k+1}, of the Hasse diagram of B_{2k+1} (the partially ordered set of subsets of a 2k+1-element set ordered by inclusion). Previously, the best result was that M_{2k+1} is Hamiltonian for all positive k through k=15. In this note we announce that M_{33} and M_{35} have Hamilton cycles. The result was achieved by an algorithmic improvement that made it possible to find a Hamilton path in a reduced graph of complementary necklace pairs having 129,644,790 vertices, using a 64-bit personal computer.

Antichains in partially ordered sets of singular cofinality

In their paper from 1981, Milner and Sauer conjectured that for any poset P, if cf(P)=lambda>cf(lambda)=kappa, then P must contain an antichain of size kappa. We prove that for lambda>cf(lambda)=kappa, if there exists a cardinal mu<lambda such that cov(lambda,mu,kappa,2)=lambda, then any poset of cofinality lambda contains lambda^kappa antichains of size kappa. The hypothesis of our theorem is very weak and is a consequence of many well-known axioms such as GCH, SSH and PFA. The consistency of the negation of this hypothesis is unknown.
Geometry of rank tests
We study partitions of the symmetric group which have desirable geometric properties. The statistical tests defined by such partitions involve counting all permutations in the equivalence classes. These permutations are the linear extensions of partially ordered sets specified by the data. Our methods refine rank tests of non-parametric statistics, such as the sign test and the runs test, and are useful for the exploratory analysis of ordinal data. Convex rank tests correspond to probabilistic conditional independence structures known as semi-graphoids. Submodular rank tests are classified by the faces of the cone of submodular functions, or by Minkowski summands of the permutohedron. We enumerate all small instances of such rank tests. Graphical tests correspond to both graphical models and to graph associahedra, and they have excellent statistical and algorithmic properties.

Given an abelian length category A, the Gabriel-Roiter measure with respect to a length function l is characterized as a universal morphism ind(A)-->P of partially ordered sets. The map is defined on the isomorphism classes of indecomposable objects of A and is a suitable refinement of the length function l.
Monotonic Sequence Games

In a monotonic sequence game, two players alternately choose elements of a sequence from some fixed ordered set. The game ends when the resulting sequence contains either an ascending subsequence of length a or a descending one of length d. We investigate the behaviour of this game when played on finite linear orders or Q and provide some general observations for play on arbitrary ordered sets.
On a quasi-ordering on Boolean functions

It was proved few years ago that classes of Boolean functions definable by means of functional equations \cite{EFHH}, or equivalently, by means of relational constraints \cite{Pi2}, coincide with initial segments of the quasi-ordered set $(Ω, \leq)$ made of the set $Ω$ of Boolean functions, suitably quasi-ordered. The resulting ordered set $(Ω/\equiv, \sqsubseteq)$ embeds into $([ω]^{<ω}, \subseteq)$, the set -ordered by inclusion- of finite subsets of the set $ω$ of integers. We prove that $(Ω/\equiv, \sqsubseteq)$ also embeds $([ω]^{<ω}, \subseteq)$. We prove that initial segments of $(Ω, \leq)$ which are definable by finitely many obstructions coincide with classes defined by finitely many equations. This gives, in particular, that the classes of Boolean functions with a bounded number of essential variables are finitely definable. As an example, we provide a concrete characterization of the subclasses made of linear functions.

The main purpose of this article is to pose three problems which are easy to be formulated in an elementary way. These problems which are specifically important also for the new class of partially ordered sets seem to be not yet solved.
Shelling totally nonnegative flag varieties

In this paper we study the partially ordered set Q^J of cells in Rietsch's cell decomposition of the totally nonnegative part of an arbitrary flag variety P^J_{\geq 0}. Our goal is to understand the geometry of P^J_{\geq 0}: Lusztig has proved that this space is contractible, but it is unknown whether the closure of each cell is contractible, and whether P^J_{\geq 0} is homeomorphic to a ball. The order complex |Q^J| is a simplicial complex which can be thought of as a combinatorial approximation of P^J_{\geq 0}. Using combinatorial tools such as Bjorner's EL-labellings and Dyer's reflection orders, we prove that Q^J is graded, thin and EL-shellable. As a corollary, we deduce that Q^J is Eulerian and that the Euler characteristic of the closure of each cell is 1. Additionally, our results imply that |Q^J| is homeomorphic to a ball, and moreover, that Q^J is the face poset of some regular CW complex homeomorphic to a ball.

We continue the study on sheaves of rings on finite posets. We present examples where the ring of global sections coincide with toric faces rings, quotients of a polynomial ring by a monomial ideal and algebras with straightening laws. We prove a rank-selection theorem which generalizes the well-known rank-selection theorem of Stanley-Reisner rings. Finally, we determine an explicit presentation of certain global rings of sections.
Dynkin diagram sequences and stabilization phenomena

We continue the study of stabilization phenomena for Dynkin diagram sequences initiated in the earlier work of Kleber and the present author. We consider a more general class of sequences than that of this earlier work, and isolate a condition on the weights that gives stabilization of tensor product and branching multiplicities. We show that all the results of the previous article can be naturally generalized to this setting. We also prove some properties of the partially ordered set of dominant weights of indefinite Kac-Moody algebras, and use this to give a more concrete definition of a stable representation ring. Finally, we consider the classical sequences $B_n, C_n, D_n$ that fall outside the purview of the earlier work, and work out some simple conditions on the weights which imply stabilization.
Multilinear function series and transforms in free probability theory

The algebra Mul[[B]] of formal multilinear function series over an algebra B and its quotient SymMul[[B]] are introduced, as well as corresponding operations of formal composition. In the setting of Mul[[B]], the unsymmetrized R- and T-transforms of random variables in B-valued noncommutative probability spaces are introduced. These satisfy properties analogous to the usual R- and T-transforms, (the latter being just the reciprocal of the S-transform), but describe all moments of a random variable, not only the symmetric moments. The partially ordered set of noncrossing linked partitions is introduced and is used to prove properties of the unsymmetrized T-transform.
Cohomology of partially ordered sets and local cohomology of section rings

We study local cohomology of rings of global sections of sheafs on the Alexandrov space of a partially ordered set. We give a criterion for a splitting of the local cohomology groups into summands determined by the cohomology of the poset and the local cohomology of the stalks. The face ring of a rational pointed fan can be considered as the ring of global sections of a flasque sheaf on the face poset of the fan. Thus we obtain a decomposition of the local cohomology of such face rings. Since the Stanley-Reisner ring of a simplicial complex is the face ring of a rational pointed fan, our main result can be interpreted as a generalization of Hochster's decomposition of local cohomology of Stanley-Reisner rings.
Some positive differences of products of Schur functions
The product $s_μs_ν$ of two Schur functions is one of the most famous examples of a Schur-positive function, i.e. a symmetric function which, when written as a linear combination of Schur functions, has all positive coefficients.
We ask when expressions of the form $s_λs_ρ- s_μs_ν$ are Schur-positive. This general question seems to be a difficult one, but a conjecture of Fomin, Fulton, Li and Poon says that it is the case at least when $λ$ and $ρ$ are obtained from $μ$ and $ν$ by redistributing the parts of $μ$ and $ν$ in a specific, yet natural, way. We show that their conjecture is true in several significant cases. We also formulate a skew-shape extension of their conjecture, and prove several results which serve as evidence in favor of this extension. Finally, we take a more global view by studying two classes of partially ordered sets suggested by these questions.

The Neggers-Stanley conjecture (also known as the Poset conjecture) asserts that the polynomial counting the linear extensions of a partially ordered set on $\{1,2,...,p\}$ by their number of descents has real zeros only. We provide counterexamples to this conjecture.
