R. Redheffer described an $n\times n$ matrix of 0's and 1's the size of whose determinant is connected to the Riemann Hypothesis. We describe the permutations that contribute to its determinant and evaluate its permanent in terms of integer factorizations. We generalize the Redheffer matrix to finite posets that have a 0 element and find the analogous results in the more general situation.

Let $Σ$ be a finite regular cell complex with $\emptyset \in Σ$, and regard it as a partially ordered set (poset) by inclusion. Let $R$ be the incidence algebra of the poset $Σ$ over a field $k$. Corresponding to the Verdier duality for constructible sheaves on $Σ$, we have a dualizing complex $w \in D^b(mod_{R \otimes_k R})$ giving a duality functor from $D^b(mod_R)$ to itself. $w$ satisfies the Auslander condition. Our duality is somewhat analogous to the Serre duality for projective schemes ($\emptyset$ plays a similar role to that of "irrelevant ideals"). If $H^i(w) \ne 0$ for exactly one $i$, then the underlying topological space of $Σ$ is Cohen-Macaulay (in the sense of the Stanley-Reisner ring theory). The converse also holds when $Σ$ is a simplicial complex.
$R$ is always a Koszul ring with $R^! \cong R^op$. The relation between the Koszul duality for $R$ and the Verdier duality is discussed. This result is a variant of a theorem of Vybornov. The Mobius function of the poset $\hatΣ$ is also discussed.

We show that with any finite partially ordered set one can associate a matrix whose determinant factors nicely. As corollaries, we obtain a number of results in the literature about GCD matrices and their relatives. Our main theorem is proved combinatorially using nonintersecting paths in a directed graph.

Combinatorial interpretation of the fibonomial coefficients as a number of choices of specific finite subsets of an infinite partially ordered set of not binomial type is proposed. This partially ordered set is here defined via characteristic matrix of the corresponding partial order relation . Relevance of the proposal to more general unification treatment is indicated.

A certain squarefree monomial ideal $H_P$ arising from a finite partially ordered set $P$ will be studied from viewpoints of both commutative algebra and combinatorics. First, it is proved that the defining ideal of the Rees algebra of $H_P$ possesses a quadratic Gröbner basis. Thus in particular all powers of $H_P$ have linear resolutions. Second, the minimal free graded resolution of $H_P$ will be constructed explicitly and a combinatorial formula to compute the Betti numbers of $H_P$ will be presented. Third, by using the fact that the Alexander dual of the simplicial complex $Δ$ whose Stanley--Reisner ideal coincides with $H_P$ is Cohen--Macaulay, all the Cohen--Macaulay bipartite graphs will be classified.

We study the set of monomial ideals in a polynomial ring as an ordered set, with the ordering given by reverse inclusion. We give a short proof of the fact that every antichain of monomial ideals is finite. Then we investigate ordinal invariants for the complexity of this ordered set. In particular, we give an interpretation of the height function in terms of the Hilbert-Samuel polynomial, and we compute upper and lower bounds on the maximal order type.

Given a formal map $F=(F_1...,F_n)$ of the form $z+\text{higher}$ order terms, we give tree expansion formulas and associated algorithms for the D-Log of F and the formal flow F_t. The coefficients which appear in these formulas can be viewed as certain generalizations of the Bernoulli numbers and the Bernoulli polynomials. Moreover the coefficient polynomials in the formal flow formula coincide with the strict order polynomials in combinatorics for the partially ordered sets induced by trees. Applications of these formulas to the Jacobian Conjecture are discussed.

Let $Ω=\{1,2,...,n\}$ where $n \ge 2$. The {\em shape} of an ordered set partition $P=(P_1,..., P_k)$ of $Ω$ is the integer partition $λ=(λ_1,...,λ_k)$ defined by $λ_i = |P_i|$. Let G be a group of permutations acting on $Ω$. For a fixed partition $λ$ of n, we say that G is {\em $λ$-transitive} if G has only one orbit when acting on partitions P of shape $\la$. A corresponding definition can also be given when G is just a set. For example, if $λ=(n-t,1,...,1)$, then a $λ$-transitive group is the same as a t-transitive permutation group and if $λ=(n-t,t)$, then we recover the t-homogeneous permutation groups.
In this paper, we use the character theory of the symmetric group $S_n$ to establish some structural results regarding $λ$-transitive groups and sets. In particular, we are able to generalize a theorem of Livingstone and Wagner about t-homogeneous groups. We survey the relevant examples coming from groups. While it is known that a finite group of permutations can be at most 5-transitive unless it contains the alternating group, we show that it is possible to construct a non-trivial t-transitive set of permutations for each positive integer t. We also show how these ideas lead to a split basis for the association scheme of the symmetric group.

In this paper we study three classes of models widely used in physics, computer science and social science: the Chip Firing Game, the Abelian Sandpile Model and the Chip Firing Game on a mutating graph. We study the set of configurations reachable from a given initial configuration, called the configuration space of a model, and try to determine the main properties of such sets. We study the order induced over the configurations by the evolution rule. This makes it possible to compare the power of expression of these models. It is known that the configuration spaces we obtain are lattices, a special kind of partially ordered set. Although the Chip Firing Game on a mutating graph is a generalization of the usual Chip Firing Game, we prove that these models generate exactly the same configuration spaces. We also prove that the class of lattices induced by the Abelian Sandpile Model is strictly included in the class of lattices induced by the Chip Firing Game, but contains the class of distributive lattices, a very well known class.

A partially ordered set is r-thick if every nonempty open interval contains at least r elements. This paper studies the flag vectors of graded, r-thick posets and shows the smallest convex cone containing them is isomorphic to the cone of flag vectors of all graded posets. It also defines a k-analogue of the Mobius function and k-Eulerian posets, which are 2k-thick. Several characterizations of k-Eulerian posets are given. The generalized Dehn-Sommerville equations are proved for flag vectors of k-Eulerian posets. A new inequality is proved to be valid and sharp for rank 8 Eulerian posets.
Stochastic monotonicity and realizable monotonicity

We explore and relate two notions of monotonicity, stochastic and realizable, for a system of probability measures on a common finite partially ordered set (poset) S when the measures are indexed by another poset A. We give counterexamples to show that the two notions are not always equivalent, but for various large classes of S we also present conditions on the poset A that are necessary and sufficient for equivalence. When A = S, the condition that the cover graph of S have no cycles is necessary and sufficient for equivalence. This case arises in comparing applicability of the perfect sampling algorithms of Propp and Wilson and the first author of the present paper.

Viewing a fan as a partially ordered set (of cones) we consider a category of sheaves on the fan which corresponds to a category of equivariant sheaves on the corresponding toric variety if the fan is rational. In this category we define an object which corresponds to the equivariant intersection cohomology complex. Our first main result is the ``elementary'' decomposition theorem for the direct image under subdivision of fans We also develop the Borel-Moore- Verdier duality in the derived category of sheaves on the fan.

With any locally finite partially ordered set $K$ its incidence algebra $Ω(K)$ is associated. We shall consider algebras over fields with characteristic zero. In this case there is a correspondence $K \leftrightarrow Ω(K)$ such that the poset $K$ can be reconstructed from its incidence algebra up to an isomorphism -- due to Stanley theorem. In the meantime, a monotone mapping between two posets in general induces no homomorphism of their incidence algebras.
In this paper I show that if the class of posets is confined to simplicial complexes then their incidence algebras acquire the structure of differential moduli and the correspondence $K\leftrightarrowΩ(K)$ is a contravariant functor.
Signs in the cd-index of Eulerian partially ordered sets

A graded partially ordered set is Eulerian if every interval has the same number of elements of even rank and of odd rank. Face lattices of convex polytopes are Eulerian. For Eulerian partially ordered sets, the flag vector can be encoded efficiently in the cd-index. The cd-index of a polytope has all positive entries. An important open problem is to give the broadest natural class of Eulerian posets having nonnegative cd-index. This paper completely determines which entries of the cd-index are nonnegative for all Eulerian posets. It also shows that there are no other lower or upper bounds on cd-coefficients (except for the coefficient of c^n).

The closed cone of flag vectors of Eulerian partially ordered sets is studied. It is completely determined up through rank seven. Half-Eulerian posets are defined. Certain limit posets of Billera and Hetyei are half-Eulerian; they give rise to extreme rays of the cone for Eulerian posets. A new family of linear inequalities valid for flag vectors of Eulerian posets is given.
A self-dual poset on objects counted by the Catalan numbers and a type-B analogue
We introduce two partially ordered sets, $P^A_n$ and $P^B_n$, of the same cardinalities as the type-A and type-B noncrossing partition lattices. The ground sets of $P^A_n$ and $P^B_n$ are subsets of the symmetric and the hyperoctahedral groups, consisting of permutations which avoid certain patterns. The order relation is given by (strict) containment of the descent sets. In each case, by means of an explicit order-preserving bijection, we show that the poset of restricted permutations is an extension of the refinement order on noncrossing partitions. Several structural properties of these permutation posets follow, including self-duality and the strong Sperner property. We also discuss posets $Q^A_n$ and $Q^B_n$ similarly associated with noncrossing partitions, defined by means of the excedence sets of suitable pattern-avoiding subsets of the symmetric and hyperoctahedral groups.
An Infinite Antichain of Permutations
We constructively prove that the partially ordered set of finite permutations ordered by deletion of entries contains an infinite antichain.
Deformations of Coxeter hyperplane arrangements

We investigate several hyperplane arrangements that can be viewed as deformations of Coxeter arrangements. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Linial and Stanley that the number of regions of the arrangement x_i - x_j = 1, 1 \leq i<j \leq n, is equal to the number of alternating trees on n+1 vertices. Remarkably, these numbers have several additional combinatorial interpretations in terms of binary trees, partially ordered sets, and tournaments. More generally, we give formulae for the number of regions and the Poincar'e polynomial of certain finite subarrangements of the affine Coxeter arrangement of type A_{n-1}. These formulae enable us to prove a "Riemann hypothesis" on the location of zeros of the Poincar'e polynomial. We also consider some generic deformations of Coxeter arrangements of type A_{n-1}.
