Equivariant Trees and Partition Complexes
We introduce two definitions of $G$-equivariant partitions of a finite $G$-set, both of which yield $G$-equivariant partition complexes. By considering suitable notions of equivariant trees, we show that $G$-equivariant partitions and $G$-trees are $G$-homotopy equivalent, generalizing existing results for the non-equivariant setting. Along the way, we develop equivariant versions of Quillen's Theorems A and B, which are of independent interest.

Switch Operators for the Six-Vertex Model
In this paper, we introduce and analyze a new switch operator for the six-vertex model. This operator, derived from the Yang-Baxter equation, allows us to express the partition function with arbitrary boundaries in terms of a base case with domain wall boundary conditions. As an application, we derive explicit formulas for the factorial Schur functions and their generalizations. Our results provide new insights into the relationship between boundary conditions and partition functions in the six-vertex model.
MC-finiteness of restricted set partition functions
A sequence $s(n)$ of integers is MC-finite if for every $m \in \mathbb{N}^+$ the sequence $s^m(n) = s(n) \bmod{m}$ is ultimately periodic. We discuss various ways of proving and disproving MC-finiteness. Our examples are mostly taken from set partition functions, but our methods can be applied to many more integer sequences.
On integer partitions corresponding to numerical semigroups
Numerical semigroups are cofinite additive submonoids of the natural numbers. In 2011, Keith and Nath illustrated an injection from numerical semigroups to integer partitions. We explore this connection between partitions and numerical semigroups with a focus on classifying the partitions that appear in the image of the injection from numerical semigroups. In particular, we count the number of partitions that correspond to numerical semigroups in terms of genus, Frobenius number, and multiplicity, with some restrictions.

Computing vector partition functions
A vector partition function is the number of ways to write a vector as a non-negative integer-coefficient sum of the elements of a finite set of vectors $Δ$. We present a new algorithm for computing closed-form formulas for vector partition functions as quasi-polynomials over a finite set of pointed polyhedral cones, implemented in the ``calculator'' computer algebra system. We include an exposition of previously known theory of vector partition functions. While our results are not new, our exposition is elementary and self-contained.

Limit shape for regularisation of large partitions under the Plancherel measure
A celebrated result of Kerov-Vershik and Logan-Shepp gives an asymptotic shape for large partitions under the Plancherel measure. We prove that when we consider $e$-regularisations of such partitions we still have a convex limit shape, which is given by a shaking of the Kerov-Vershik-Logan-Shepp curve. We deduce an explicit form for the first asymptotics of the length of the first rows and the first columns for the $e$-regularisation.

Multislant matrices and Jacobi--Trudi determinants over finite fields
Published in Finite Fields and Their Applications 91, October 2023, 102262 • View PublicationBIB
The problem of counting the $\mathbb{F}_q$-valued points of a variety has been well-studied from algebro-geometric, topological, and combinatorial perspectives. We explore a combinatorially flavored version of this problem studied by Anzis et al. (2018), which is similar to work of Kontsevich, Elkies, and Haglund. Anzis et al. considered the question: what is the probability that the determinant of a Jacobi-Trudi matrix vanishes if the variables are chosen uniformly at random from a finite field? They gave a formula for various partitions such as hooks, staircases, and rectangles. We give a formula for partitions whose parts form an arithmetic progression, verifying and generalizing one of their conjectures. More generally, we compute the probability of the determinant vanishing for a class of matrices (``multislant matrices'') made of Toeplitz blocks with certain properties. We furthermore show that the determinant of a skew Jacobi-Trudi matrix is equidistributed across the finite field if the skew partition is a ribbon.

Generalizations of Sylvester's refinement of Euler's odd-strict theorem
Regarding Euler's odd-strict theorem, which is the most basic partition identity, A refinement was done by Sylvester, and it was generalized by Bessenrodt to the r-regular and r-class regular cases. In this paper, we focus on the periodicity of the exponent seen on the r-regular side in Bessenrodt's generalization, and further generalize from that point of view. At the end of this paper, we also introduce a partition identity when extended without regard to the periodicity of the exponent.

Complete Bipartite Partition Relations in Cohen Extensions
We investigate the effect of adding $ω_2$ Cohen reals on graphs on $ω_2$, in particular we show that $ω_2 \to (ω_2, ω: ω)^2$ holds after forcing with $\mathsf{Add}(ω, ω_2)$ in a model of $\mathsf{CH}$. We also prove that this results is in a certain sense optimal as $\mathsf{Add}(ω, ω_2)$ forces that $ω_2 \not\to (ω_2, ω: ω_1)^2$.
Connected coalitions in graphs
The connected coalition in a graph $G=(V,E)$ consists of two disjoint sets of vertices $V_{1}$ and $V_{2}$, neither of which is a connected dominating set but whose union $V_{1}\cup V_{2}$, is a connected dominating set. A connected coalition partition in a graph $G$ of order $n=|V|$ is a vertex partition $ψ$ = $\{V_1, V_2,..., V_k \}$ such that every set $V_i \in ψ$ either is a connected dominating set consisting of a single vertex of degree $n-1$, or is not a connected dominating set but forms a connected coalition with another set $V_j\in ψ$ which is not a connected dominating set. The connected coalition number, denoted by $CC(G)$, is the maximum cardinality of a connected coalition partition of $G$. In this paper, we initiate the study of connected coalition in graphs and present some basic results. Precisely, we characterize all graphs that have a connected coalition partition. Moreover, we show that for any graph $G$ of order $n$ with $δ(G)=1$ and with no full vertex, it holds that $CC(G)<n$. Furthermore, we show that for any tree $T$, $CC(T)=2$. Finally, we present two polynomial-time algorithms that for a given connected graph $G$ of order $n$ determine whether $CC(G)=n$ or $CC(G)=n-1$.

Orthogonal cycle systems with cycle length less than 10
An $H$-decomposition of $G$ is a partition of the edge-set of $G$ into subsets, where each subset induces a copy of the graph $H$. A $k$-orthogonal $H$-decomposition of a graph $G$ is a set of $k$ $H$-decompositions of $G$, such that any two copies of $H$ in distinct $H$-decompositions intersect in at most one edge. When $G=K_v$ we call the $H$-decomposition an $H$-system of order $v$. In this paper we consider the case $H$ is an $l$-cycle and construct a pair of orthogonal $l$-cycle systems for all admissible orders when $l=5,6,7, 8\ or\ 9$, except $(l,v)=(7,7)$ and $(l,v)=(9,9)$.

On cone partitions for the min-cut and max-cut problems with non-negative edges
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider the classical minimum and maximum cut problems: find a partition of vertices of a graph into two disjoint subsets that minimize or maximize the sum of the weights of edges with endpoints in different subsets. It is known that if the edge weights are non-negative, then the min-cut problem is polynomially solvable, while the max-cut problem is NP-hard. We construct a partition of the positive orthant into convex cones corresponding to the characteristic cut vectors, similar to a normal fan of a cut polyhedron. A graph of a cone partition is a graph whose vertices are cones, and two cones are adjacent if and only if they have a common facet. We define adjacency criteria in the graphs of cone partitions for the min-cut and max-cut problems. Based on them, we show that for both problems the vertex degrees are exponential, and the graph diameter equals 2. These results contrast with the clique numbers of graphs of cone partitions, which are linear for the minimum cut problem and exponential for the maximum cut problem.

The Solidarity Cover Problem
Various real-world problems consist of partitioning a set of locations into disjoint subsets, each subset spread in a way that it covers the whole set with a certain radius. Given a finite set S, a metric d, and a radius r, define a subset (of S) S' to be an r-cover if and only if forall s in S there exists s' in S' such that d(s,s') is less or equal to r. We examine the problem of determining whether there exist m disjoint r-covers, naming it the Solidarity Cover Problem (SCP). We consider as well the related optimization problems of maximizing the number of r-covers, referred to as the partition size, and minimizing the radius. We analyze the relation between the SCP and a graph problem known as the Domatic Number Problem (DNP), both hard problems in the general case. We show that the SCP is hard already in the Euclidean 2D setting, implying hardness of the DNP already in the unit-disc-graph setting. As far as we know, the latter is a result yet to be shown. We use the tight approximation bound of (1-o(1))/ln(n) for the DNP's general case, shown by U.Feige, M.Halld'orsson, G.Kortsarz, and A.Srinivasan (SIAM Journal on computing, 2002), to deduce the same bound for partition-size approximation of the SCP in the Euclidean space setting. We show an upper bound of 3 and lower bounds of 2 and sqrt(2) for approximating the minimal radius in different settings of the SCP. Lastly, in the Euclidean 2D setting we provide a general bicriteria-approximation scheme which allows a range of possibilities for trading the optimality of the radius in return for better approximation of the partition size and vice versa. We demonstrate a usage of the scheme which achieves an approximation of (1/16,2) for the partition size and radius respectively.

Minimum degree thresholds for Hamilton $(\ell,k-\ell)$-cycles in $k$-uniform hypergraphs
Let $n>k>\ell$ be positive integers. We say a $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ contains a Hamilton $(\ell,k-\ell)$-cycle if there is a partition $(L_0,R_0,L_1,R_1,\ldots,L_{t-1},R_{t-1})$ of $V(\mathcal{H})$ with $|L_i|=\ell$, $|R_i|=k-\ell$ such that $L_i\cup R_i$ and $R_i\cup L_{i+1}$ (subscripts module $t$) are all edges of $\mathcal{H}$ for $i=0,1,\ldots,t-1$. In the present paper, we determine the tight minimum $\ell$-degree condition that guarantees the existence of a Hamilton $(\ell,k-\ell)$-cycle in every $k$-uniform $n$-vertex hypergraph for $k\geq 7$, $k/2\leq \ell\leq k-1$ and sufficiently large $n\in k\mathbb{N}$.

A bijection between strongly stable and totally symmetric partitions
Artinian monomial ideals in $d$ variables correspond to $d$-dimensional partitions. We define $d$-dimensional strongly stable partitions and show that they correspond to strongly stable ideals in $d$ variables. We show a bijection between strongly stable partitions and totally symmetric partitions which preserves the side length of the minimal bounding box.

Rank-based linkage I: triplet comparisons and oriented simplicial complexes
Rank-based linkage is a new tool for summarizing a collection $S$ of objects according to their relationships. These objects are not mapped to vectors, and ``similarity'' between objects need be neither numerical nor symmetrical. All an object needs to do is rank nearby objects by similarity to itself, using a Comparator which is transitive, but need not be consistent with any metric on the whole set. Call this a ranking system on $S$. Rank-based linkage is applied to the $K$-nearest neighbor digraph derived from a ranking system. Computations occur on a 2-dimensional abstract oriented simplicial complex whose faces are among the points, edges, and triangles of the line graph of the undirected $K$-nearest neighbor graph on $S$. In $|S| K^2$ steps it builds an edge-weighted linkage graph $(S, \mathcal{L}, σ)$ where $σ(\{x, y\})$ is called the in-sway between objects $x$ and $y$. Take $\mathcal{L}_t$ to be the links whose in-sway is at least $t$, and partition $S$ into components of the graph $(S, \mathcal{L}_t)$, for varying $t$. Rank-based linkage is a functor from a category of ``out-ordered'' digraphs to a category of partitioned sets, with the practical consequence that augmenting the set of objects in a rank-respectful way gives a fresh clustering which does not ``rip apart'' the previous one. The same holds for single linkage clustering in the metric space context, but not for typical optimization-based methods. Orientation sheaves play in a fundamental role and ensure that partially overlapping data sets can be ``glued'' together. Open combinatorial problems are presented in the last section.

Some Refinements of Formulae Involving Floor and Ceiling Functions
The floor and ceiling functions appear often in mathematics and manipulating sums involving floors and ceilings is a subtle game. Fortunately, the well-known textbook Concrete Mathematics provides a nice introduction with a number of techniques explained and a number of single or double sums treated as exercises. For two such double sums we provide their single-sum analogues. These closed-form identities are given in terms of a dual partition of the multiset (regarded as a partition) of all b-ary digits of a nonnegative integer. We also present the double- and single-sum analogues involving the fractional part function and the shifted fractional part function.

The minimum number of chains in a noncrossing partition of a poset
Published in Filomat, 38(8) (2024), 2915--2922 • Search Publication
The notion of noncrossing partitions of a partially ordered set (poset) is introduced here. When the poset in question is $[n]=\{1,2,\dots, n\}$ with the complete order of natural numbers, conventional noncrossing partitions arise. The minimum possible number of chains contained in a noncrossing partition of a poset clearly reflects the structural complexity of the poset. For the poset $[n]$, this number is just one. However, for a generic poset, it is a challenging task to determine the minimum number. Our main result in the paper is some characterization of this quantity.

Vector Partition Identities for $2$D, $3$D and $n$D Lattices
We prove identities generating higher dimensional vector partitions. We derive theorems for integer lattice points in the 2D first quadrant, then generalize the approach to find 3D and $n$-space lattice point vector region extensions. We also state combinatorial identities for Visible Point Vectors in 2D up to 5D and $n$D first hyperquadrant and hyperpyramid lattices. 2D and 3D theorems for vector partitions with binary components are also derived.
