The equivariant Ehrhart theory of the permutahedron
Published • View PublicationBIB
Equivariant Ehrhart theory enumerates the lattice points in a polytope with respect to a group action. Answering a question of Stapledon, we describe the equivariant Ehrhart theory of the permutahedron, and we prove his Effectiveness Conjecture in this special case.

Generalized permutahedra: Minkowski linear functionals and Ehrhart positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We characterize all signed Minkowski sums that define generalized permutahedra, extending results of Ardila-Benedetti-Doker (2010). We use this characterization to give a complete classification of all positive, translation-invariant, symmetric Minkowski linear functionals on generalized permutahedra. We show that they form a simplicial cone and explicitly describe their generators. We apply our results to prove that the linear coefficients of Ehrhart polynomials of generalized permutahedra, which include matroid polytopes, are non-negative, verifying conjectures of De Loera-Haws-Koeppe (2009) and Castillo-Liu (2018) in this case. We also apply this technique to give an example of a solid-angle polynomial of a generalized permutahedron that has negative linear term and obtain inequalities for beta invariants of contractions of matroids.
Coxeter submodular functions and deformations of Coxeter permutahedra
We describe the cone of deformations of a Coxeter permutahedron, or equivalently, the nef cone of the toric variety associated to a Coxeter complex. This family of polytopes contains polyhedral models for the Coxeter-theoretic analogs of compositions, graphs, matroids, posets, and associahedra. Our description extends the known correspondence between generalized permutahedra, polymatroids, and submodular functions to any finite reflection group.

Zero-one Schubert polynomials
We prove that if $σ\in S_m$ is a pattern of $w \in S_n$, then we can express the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w$ as a monomial times $\mathfrak{S}_σ$ (in reindexed variables) plus a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients. This implies that the set of permutations whose Schubert polynomials have all their coefficients equal to either 0 or 1 is closed under pattern containment. Using Magyar's orthodontia, we characterize this class by a list of twelve avoided patterns. We also give other equivalent conditions on $\mathfrak{S}_w$ being zero-one. In this case, the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w$ is equal to the integer point transform of a generalized permutahedron.

Homomorphism Complexes and Maximal Chains in Graded Posets
We apply the homomorphism complex construction to partially ordered sets, introducing a new topological construction based on the set of maximal chains in a graded poset. Our primary objects of study are distributive lattices, with special emphasis on finite products of chains. For the special case of a Boolean algebra, we observe that the corresponding homomorphism complex is isomorphic to the subcomplex of cubical cells in a permutahedron. Thus, this work can be interpreted as a generalization of the study of these complexes. We provide a detailed investigation when our poset is a product of chains, in which case we find an optimal discrete Morse matching and prove that the corresponding complex is torsion-free.

Computational complexity, Newton polytopes, and Schubert polynomials
Published in Proceedings of the 31st Conference on Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics (Ljubljana), Sem. Lothar. Combin. 82B (2020), Art. 52, 12 pp • Search Publication
The nonvanishing problem asks if a coefficient of a polynomial is nonzero. Many families of polynomials in algebraic combinatorics admit combinatorial counting rules and simultaneously enjoy having saturated Newton polytopes (SNP). Thereby, in amenable cases, nonvanishing is in the complexity class $NP\cap coNP$ of problems with "good characterizations". This suggests a new algebraic combinatorics viewpoint on complexity theory. This report discusses the case of Schubert polynomials. These form a basis of all polynomials and appear in the study of cohomology rings of flag manifolds. We give a tableau criterion for nonvanishing, from which we deduce the first polynomial time algorithm. These results are obtained from new characterizations of the Schubitope, a generalization of the permutahedron defined for any subset of the n x n grid, together with a theorem of A. Fink, K. Mészáros, and A. St. Dizier, which proved a conjecture of C. Monical, N. Tokcan, and the third author.

The weak order on Weyl posets
Published in Canad. J. Math., 72(4):867-899, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We define a natural lattice structure on all subsets of a finite root system that extends the weak order on the elements of the corresponding Coxeter group. For crystallographic root systems, we show that the subposet of this lattice induced by antisymmetric closed subsets of roots is again a lattice. We then study further subposets of this lattice which naturally correspond to the elements, the intervals and the faces of the permutahedron and the generalized associahedra of the corresponding Weyl group. These results extend to arbitrary finite crystallographic root systems the recent results of G. Chatel, V. Pilaud and V. Pons on the weak order on posets and its induced subposets.

Three Études on a sequence transformation pipeline
We study a sequence transformation pipeline that maps certain sequences with rational generating functions to permutation-based sequence families of combinatorial significance. Many of the number triangles we encounter can be related to simplicial objects such as the associahedron and the permutahedron. The linkages between these objects is facilitated by the use of the previously introduced $\mathcal{T}$ transform.
The equivariant volumes of the permutahedron
Published in Discrete & Computational Geometry, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the action of the symmetric group $S_n$ on the permutahedron $Π_n$. We prove that if $σ$ is a permutation of $S_n$ which has $m$ cycles of lengths $l_1, \ldots, l_m$, then the subpolytope of $Π_n$ fixed by $σ$ has normalized volume $n^{m-2} \gcd(l_1, \ldots, l_m)$.

Schubert polynomials as integer point transforms of generalized permutahedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the dual character of the flagged Weyl module of any diagram is a positively weighted integer point transform of a generalized permutahedron. In particular, Schubert and key polynomials are positively weighted integer point transforms of generalized permutahedra. This implies several recent conjectures of Monical, Tokcan and Yong.

Newton polytopes and symmetric Grothendieck polynomials
Published in C. R. Math. Acad. Sci. Paris 355 (2017), no. 8, 831-834 • View PublicationBIB
Symmetric Grothendieck polynomials are inhomogeneous versions of Schur polynomials that arise in combinatorial $K$-theory. A polynomial has saturated Newton polytope (SNP) if every lattice point in the polytope is an exponent vector. We show Newton polytopes of these Grothendieck polynomials and their homogeneous components have SNP. Moreover, the Newton polytope of each homogeneous component is a permutahedron. This addresses recent conjectures of C. Monical-N. Tokcan-A. Yong and of A. Fink-K. Mészáros-A. St. Dizier in this special case.

Newton Polytopes in Algebraic Combinatorics
Published in Selecta Math. (N.S.) 25 (2019), no. 5, Art. 66, 37 pp • View PublicationBIB
A polynomial has saturated Newton polytope (SNP) if every lattice point of the convex hull of its exponent vectors corresponds to a monomial. We compile instances of SNP in algebraic combinatorics (some with proofs, others conjecturally): skew Schur polynomials; symmetric polynomials associated to reduced words, Redfield--Polya theory, Witt vectors, and totally nonnegative matrices; resultants; discriminants (up to quartics); Macdonald polynomials; key polynomials; Demazure atoms; Schubert polynomials; and Grothendieck polynomials, among others. Our principal construction is the Schubitope. For any subset of [n] x [n], we describe it by linear inequalities. This generalized permutahedron conjecturally has positive Ehrhart polynomial. We conjecture it describes the Newton polytope of Schubert and key polynomials. We also define dominance order on permutations and study its poset-theoretic properties.

The weak order on integer posets
Published in Alg. Comb., 2(1):1-48, 2019 • View PublicationBIB
We explore lattice structures on integer binary relations (i.e. binary relations on the set $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ for a fixed integer $n$) and on integer posets (i.e. partial orders on the set $\{1, 2, \dots, n\}$ for a fixed integer $n$). We first observe that the weak order on the symmetric group naturally extends to a lattice structure on all integer binary relations. We then show that the subposet of this weak order induced by integer posets defines as well a lattice. We finally study the subposets of this weak order induced by specific families of integer posets corresponding to the elements, the intervals, and the faces of the permutahedron, the associahedron, and some recent generalizations of those.

On a special class of general permutahedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Minkowski sums of simplices in ${\mathbb{R}}^n$ form an interesting class of polytopes that seem to emerge in various situations. In this paper we discuss the Minkowski sum of the simplices $Δ_{k-1}$ in ${\mathbb{R}}^n$ where $k$ and $n$ are fixed, their flags and some of their face lattice structure. In particular, we derive a closed formula for their {\em exponential generating flag function}. These polytopes are simple, include both the simplex $Δ_{n-1}$ and the permutahedron $Π_{n-1}$, and form a Minkowski basis for more general permutahedra.
Chains in shard lattices and BHZ posets
Published • View PublicationBIB
For every finite Coxeter group W , we prove that the number of chains in the shard intersection lattice introduced by Reading on the one hand and in the BHZ poset introduced by Bergeron, Zabrocki and the third author on the other hand, are the same. We also show that these two partial orders are related by an equality between generating series for their M{ö}bius numbers, and provide a dimension-preserving bijection between the order complex on the BHZ poset and the pulling triangulation of the permutahedron arising from the right weak order, analogous to the bijection defined by Reading between the order complex of the shard poset and the same triangulation of the permutahedron.

Permutrees
Published in Alg. Comb., 1(2):173-224, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce permutrees, a unified model for permutations, binary trees, Cambrian trees and binary sequences. On the combinatorial side, we study the rotation lattices on permutrees and their lattice homomorphisms, unifying the weak order, Tamari, Cambrian and boolean lattices and the classical maps between them. On the geometric side, we provide both the vertex and facet descriptions of a polytope realizing the rotation lattice, specializing to the permutahedron, the associahedra, and certain graphical zonotopes. On the algebraic side, we construct a Hopf algebra on permutrees containing the known Hopf algebraic structures on permutations, binary trees, Cambrian trees, and binary sequences.
The facial weak order and its lattice quotients
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 370:1469-1507, 2018 • View PublicationBIB
We investigate a poset structure that extends the weak order on a finite Coxeter group $W$ to the set of all faces of the permutahedron of $W$. We call this order the facial weak order. We first provide two alternative characterizations of this poset: a first one, geometric, that generalizes the notion of inversion sets of roots, and a second one, combinatorial, that uses comparisons of the minimal and maximal length representatives of the cosets. These characterizations are then used to show that the facial weak order is in fact a lattice, generalizing a well-known result of A. Björner for the classical weak order. Finally, we show that any lattice congruence of the classical weak order induces a lattice congruence of the facial weak order, and we give a geometric interpretation of their classes. As application, we describe the facial boolean lattice on the faces of the cube and the facial Cambrian lattice on the faces of the corresponding generalized associahedron.

Primitive Zonotopes

We introduce and study a family of polytopes which can be seen as a generalization of the permutahedron of type $B_d$. We highlight connections with the largest possible diameter of the convex hull of a set of points in dimension $d$ whose coordinates are integers between $0$ and $k$, and with the computational complexity of multicriteria matroid optimization.

Classification of vertex-transitive cubic partial cubes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Partial cubes are graphs isometrically embeddable into hypercubes. In this paper it is proved that every cubic, vertex-transitive partial cube is isomorphic to one of the following graphs: $K_2 \, \square \, C_{2n}$, for some $n\geq 2$, the generalized Petersen graph $G(10,3)$, the cubic permutahedron, the truncated cuboctahedron, or the truncated icosidodecahedron. This classification is a generalization of results of Brešar et al.~from 2004 on cubic mirror graphs, it includes all cubic, distance-regular partial cubes (Weichsel, 1992), and presents a contribution to the classification of all cubic partial cubes.

A Terrible Expansion of the Determinant
From a transfer formula in multivariate finite operator calculus, comes an expansion for the determinant similar to Ryser's formula for the permanent. Although this one contains many more terms than the usual determinant formula. To prove it, we consider the poset of ordered partitions, properties of the permutahedron, and some good old fashioned combinatorial techniques.
