Erdős-Ko-Rado theorems on the weak Bruhat lattice}
Published in Discrete Applied Mathematics, 14-JAN-2019 • View PublicationBIB
Let ${\mathscr L}=(X,\preceq)$ be a lattice. For ${\cal P}\subseteq X$ we say that ${\cal P}$ is $t$-{\it intersecting} if ${\sf rank}(x\wedge y)\ge t$ for all $x,y\in{\cal P}$. The seminal theorem of Erdős, Ko and Rado describes the maximum intersecting ${\cal P}$ in the lattice of subsets of a finite set with the additional condition that ${\cal P}$ is contained within a level of the lattice. The Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem has been extensively studied and generalized to other objects and lattices. In this paper, we focus on intersecting families of permutations as defined with respect to the weak Bruhat lattice. In this setting, we prove analogs of certain extremal results on intersecting set systems. In particular we give a characterization of the maximum intersecting families of permutations in the Bruhat lattice. We also characterize the maximum intersecting families of permutations within the $r^{\textrm{th}}$ level of the Bruhat lattice of permutations of size $n$, provided that $n$ is large relative to $r$.

On the longest common subsequence of independent random permutations invariant under conjugation
Published • View PublicationBIB
Bukh and Zhou conjectured that the expectation of the length of the longest common subsequence of two i.i.d random permutations of size $n$ is greater than $\sqrt{n}$. We prove in this paper that there exists a universal constant $n_1$ such that their conjecture is satisfied for any pair of i.i.d random permutations of size greater than $n_1$ with distribution invariant under conjugation. We prove also that asymptotically, this expectation is at least of order $2\sqrt{n}$ which is the asymptotic behaviour of the uniform setting. More generally, in the case where the laws of the two permutations are not necessarily the same, we gibe a lower bound for the expectation. In particular, we prove that if one of the permutations is invariant under conjugation and with a good control of the expectation of the number of its cycles, the limiting fluctuations of the length of the longest common subsequence are of Tracy-Widom type. This result holds independently of the law of the second permutation.
Some variations on Lyndon words
In this paper we compare two finite words $u$ and $v$ by the lexicographical order of the infinite words $u^ω$ and $v^ω$. Informally, we say that we compare $u$ and $v$ by the infinite order. We show several properties of Lyndon words expressed using this infinite order. The innovative aspect of this approach is that it allows to take into account also non trivial conditions on the prefixes of a word, instead that only on the suffixes. In particular, we derive a result of Ufnarovskij [V. Ufnarovskij, "Combinatorial and asymptotic methods in algebra", 1995] that characterizes a Lyndon word as a word which is greater, with respect to the infinite order, than all its prefixes. Motivated by this result, we introduce the prefix standard permutation of a Lyndon word and the corresponding (left) Cartesian tree. We prove that the left Cartesian tree is equal to the left Lyndon tree, defined by the left standard factorization of Viennot [G. Viennot, "Algèbres de Lie libres et monoïdes libres", 1978]. This result is dual with respect to a theorem of Hohlweg and Reutenauer [C. Hohlweg and C. Reutenauer, "Lyndon words, permutations and trees", 2003].

Toric degenerations of Grassmannians and Schubert varieties from matching field tableaux
Published in Journal of Algebra 559, 646-678, 2020 • View PublicationBIB
We study the combinatorics of Gröbner degenerations of Grassmannians and the Schubert varieties inside them. We provide a family of binomial ideals whose combinatorics is governed by tableaux induced by matching fields in the sense of Sturmfels and Zelevinsky. We prove that these ideals are all quadratically generated and they yield a SAGBI basis of the Plücker algebra. This leads to a new family of toric degenerations of Grassmannians. Moreover, we apply our results to construct a family of Gröbner degenerations of Schubert varieties inside Grassmannians. We provide a complete characterization of toric ideals among these degenerations in terms of the combinatorics of matching fields, permutations, and semi-standard tableaux.

Birkhoff polytopes of different type and the orthant-lattice property
The Birkhoff polytope, defined to be the convex hull of $n\times n$ permutation matrices, is a well studied polytope in the context of the Ehrhart theory. This polytope is known to have many desirable properties, such as the Gorenstein property and existence of regular, unimodular triangulations. In this paper, we study analogues of the Birkhoff polytope for finite irreducible Coxeter groups of other types. We focus on a type-$B$ Birkhoff polytope $\mathcal{BB}(n)$ arising from signed permutation matrices and prove that it and its dual polytope are reflexive, and hence Gorenstein, and also possess regular, unimodular triangulations. Noting that our triangulation proofs do not rely on the combinatorial structure of $\mathcal{BB}(n)$, we define the notion of an orthant-lattice property polytope and use this to prove more general results for the existence of regular, unimodular triangulations and unimodular covers for a significant family of reflexive polytopes. We conclude by remarking on some connections to Gale-duality, Birkhoff polytopes of other types, and possible applications of orthant-lattice property.

Zero-one Schubert polynomials
We prove that if $σ\in S_m$ is a pattern of $w \in S_n$, then we can express the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w$ as a monomial times $\mathfrak{S}_σ$ (in reindexed variables) plus a polynomial with nonnegative coefficients. This implies that the set of permutations whose Schubert polynomials have all their coefficients equal to either 0 or 1 is closed under pattern containment. Using Magyar's orthodontia, we characterize this class by a list of twelve avoided patterns. We also give other equivalent conditions on $\mathfrak{S}_w$ being zero-one. In this case, the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w$ is equal to the integer point transform of a generalized permutahedron.

The Hopf algebra of generic rectangulations
A family of permutations called 2-clumped permutations forms a basis for a sub-Hopf algebra of the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra of permutations. The 2-clumped permutations are in bijection with certain decompositions of a square into rectangles, called generic rectangulations. Thus, we can describe the Hopf algebra of 2-clumped permutations using generic rectangulations (we call this isomorphic Hopf algebra the Hopf algebra of generic rectangulations). In this paper, we describe the cover relations in a lattice of generic rectangulations that is a lattice quotient of the right weak order on permutations. We then use this lattice to describe the product and coproduct operations in the Hopf algebra of generic rectangulations.

On partially ordered patterns of length 4 and 5 in permutations
Partially ordered patterns (POPs) generalize the notion of classical patterns studied widely in the literature in the context of permutations, words, compositions and partitions. In an occurrence of a POP, the relative order of some of the elements is not important. Thus, any POP of length $k$ is defined by a partially ordered set on $k$ elements, and classical patterns correspond to $k$-element chains. The notion of a POP provides a convenient language to deal with larger sets of permutation patterns. This paper contributes to a long line of research on classical permutation patterns of length 4 and 5, and beyond, by conducting a systematic search of connections between sequences in the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS) and permutations avoiding POPs of length 4 and 5. As the result, we (i) obtain 13 new enumerative results for classical patterns of length 4 and 5, and a number of results for patterns of arbitrary length, (ii) collect under one roof many sporadic results in the literature related to avoidance of patterns of length 4 and 5, and (iii) conjecture 6 connections to the OEIS. Among the most intriguing bijective questions we state, 7 are related to explaining Wilf-equivalence of various sets of patterns, e.g.\ 5 or 8 patterns of length 4, and 2 or 6 patterns of length~5.

Counting 3-Stack-Sortable Permutations
We prove a "decomposition lemma" that allows us to count preimages of certain sets of permutations under West's stack-sorting map $s$. As a first application, we give a new proof of Zeilberger's formula for the number of 2-stack-sortable permutations in $S_n$. Our proof generalizes, allowing us to find an algebraic equation satisfied by the generating function that counts 2-stack-sortable permutations according to length, number of descents, and number of peaks. The same method yields a recurrence relation for $W_3(n)$, the number of 3-stack-sortable permutations in $S_n$. We compute $W_3(n)$ for $n\le 174$, extending the 13 terms of this sequence that were known before. We also prove the first nontrivial lower bound for $\lim\limits_{n\to\infty}W_3(n)^{1/n}$. Invoking a result of Kremer, we also prove that $\lim\limits_{n\to\infty}W_t(n)^{1/n}\geq(\sqrt{t}+1)^2$ for all $t\geq 1$, which we use to improve a result of Smith. Our computations allow us to disprove a conjecture of Bóna, although we do not yet know for sure which one. We can refine our methods to obtain a recurrence for the number of 3-stack-sortable permutations in $S_n$ with $k$ descents and $p$ peaks. This produces a large amount of evidence supporting a real-rootedness conjecture of Bóna. Using part of the theory of valid hook configurations, we give a new proof of a $γ$-nonnegativity result of Brändén, which in turn implies an older result of Bóna. We then answer a question of the current author by producing a set $A\subseteq S_{11}$ such that $\sum_{σ\in s^{-1}(A)}x^{\text{des}(σ)}$ has nonreal roots. We interpret this as partial evidence against the same real-rootedness conjecture of Bóna that we found evidence supporting. Examining the parities of the numbers $W_3(n)$, we obtain strong evidence against yet another conjecture of Bóna. We end with some conjectures of our own.
Random Feedback Shift Registers, and the Limit Distribution for Largest Cycle Lengths
For a random binary noncoalescing feedback shift register of width $n$, with all $2^{2^{n-1}}$ possible feedback functions $f$ equally likely, the process of long cycle lengths, scaled by dividing by $N=2^n$, converges in distribution to the same Poisson-Dirichlet limit as holds for random permutations in $\mathcal{S}_N$, with all $N!$ possible permutations equally likely. Such behavior was conjectured by Golomb, Welch, and Goldstein in 1959.

A directed graph structure of alternating sign matrices
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications 519 (2017), 164-190 • Search Publication
We introduce a new directed graph structure into the set of alternating sign matrices. This includes Bruhat graph (Bruhat order) of the symmetric groups as a subgraph (subposet). Drake-Gerrish-Skandera (2004, 2006) gave characterizations of Bruhat order in terms of total nonnegativity (TNN) and subtraction-free Laurent (SFL) expressions for permutation monomials. With our directed graph, we extend their idea in two ways: first, from permutations to alternating sign matrices; second, $q$-analogs (which we name $q$TNN and $q$SFL properties). %In our discussion, essential sets, introduced by Fulton in a rather different context, play a key role. As a by-product, we obtain a new kind of permutation statistic, the signed bigrassmannian statistics, using Dodgson's condensation on determinants.

Permutation patterns in genome rearrangement problems: the reversal model
In the context of the genome rearrangement problem, we analyze two well known models, namely the reversal and the prefix reversal models, by exploiting the connection with the notion of permutation pattern. More specifically, for any $k$, we provide a characterization of the set of permutations having distance $\leq k$ from the identity (which is known to be a permutation class) in terms of what we call generating peg permutations and we describe some properties of its basis, which allow to compute such a basis for small values of $k$.

Combinatorial $t$-designs from special polynomials
Combinatorial $t$-designs have nice applications in coding theory, finite geometries and several engineering areas. There are two major methods of constructing $t$-designs. One of them is via group actions of certain permutation groups which are $t$-transitive or $t$-homogeneous on some point set. The other is a coding-theoretical one. The objectives of this paper are to introduce two constructions of $t$-designs with special polynomials over finite fields GF$(q)$, and obtain $2$-designs and $3$-designs with interesting parameters. A type of d-polynomials is defined and used to construct $2$-designs. Under the framework of the first construction, it is shown that every o-polynomial over GF$(2^m)$ gives a $2$-design, and every o-monomial over GF$(2^m)$ yields a $3$-design. Under the second construction, every $o$-polynomial gives a $3$-design. Some open problems and conjectures are also presented in this paper.

Decompositions of the authomorphism groups of edge-colored graphs into the direct product of permutation groups
In the paper Graphical complexity of products of permutation groups, M. Grech, A. Jez, A. Kisielewicz have proved that the direct product of automorphism groups of edge-colored graphs is itself the automorphism groups of an edge-colored graph. In this paper, we study the direct product of two permutation groups such that at least one of them fails to be the automorphism group of an edge-colored graph. We find necessary and sufficient conditions for the direct product to be the automorphism group of an edge-colored graph. The same problem is solved for the edge-colored digraphs.

Mixed coloured permutations
In this paper we introduce mixed coloured permutation, permutations with certain coloured cycles, and study the enumerative properties of these combinatorial objects. We derive the generating function, closed forms, recursions and combinatorial identities for the counting sequence, mixed Stirling numbers of the first kind. In this comprehensive study we consider further the conditions on the length of the cycles, $r$-mixed Stirling numbers and the connection to Bell polynomials.
Scaling limits of permutation classes with a finite specification: a dichotomy
We consider uniform random permutations in classes having a finite combinatorial specification for the substitution decomposition. These classes include (but are not limited to) all permutation classes with a finite number of simple permutations. Our goal is to study their limiting behavior in the sense of permutons. The limit depends on the structure of the specification restricted to families with the largest growth rate. When it is strongly connected, two cases occur. If the associated system of equations is linear, the limiting permuton is a deterministic $X$-shape. Otherwise, the limiting permuton is the Brownian separable permuton, a random object that already appeared as the limit of most substitution-closed permutation classes, among which the separable permutations. Moreover these results can be combined to study some non strongly connected cases. To prove our result, we use a characterization of the convergence of random permutons by the convergence of random subpermutations. Key steps are the combinatorial study, via substitution trees, of families of permutations with marked elements inducing a given pattern, and the singularity analysis of the corresponding generating functions.
New combinatorial interpretations of the binomial coefficients
Using generating functions and some trivial bijections, we show in this paper that the binomial coefficients count the set of (123,132) and (123,213)-avoiding permutations according to the number of crossings. We also define a q-tableau of power of two and prove that it counts the set of (213,312) and (132,312)-avoiding permutations according to the number of crossings.

Normal 6-edge-colorings of some bridgeless cubic graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In an edge-coloring of a cubic graph, an edge is poor or rich, if the set of colors assigned to the edge and the four edges adjacent it, has exactly five or exactly three distinct colors, respectively. An edge is normal in an edge-coloring if it is rich or poor in this coloring. A normal $k$-edge-coloring of a cubic graph is an edge-coloring with $k$ colors such that each edge of the graph is normal. We denote by $χ'_{N}(G)$ the smallest $k$, for which $G$ admits a normal $k$-edge-coloring. Normal edge-colorings were introduced by Jaeger in order to study his well-known Petersen Coloring Conjecture. It is known that proving $χ'_{N}(G)\leq 5$ for every bridgeless cubic graph is equivalent to proving Petersen Coloring Conjecture. Moreover, Jaeger was able to show that it implies classical conjectures like Cycle Double Cover Conjecture and Berge-Fulkerson Conjecture. Recently, two of the authors were able to show that any simple cubic graph admits a normal $7$-edge-coloring, and this result is best possible. In the present paper, we show that any claw-free bridgeless cubic graph, permutation snark, tree-like snark admits a normal $6$-edge-coloring. Finally, we show that any bridgeless cubic graph $G$ admits a $6$-edge-coloring such that at least $\frac{7}{9}\cdot |E|$ edges of $G$ are normal.

Schubert polynomials as projections of Minkowski sums of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes are classical objects in algebraic combinatorics arising in the representation theory of $\mathfrak{gl}_n(\mathbb{C})$. The integer point transform of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope $\mathrm{GT}(λ)$ projects to the Schur function $s_λ$. Schur functions form a distinguished basis of the ring of symmetric functions; they are also special cases of Schubert polynomials $\mathfrak{S}_{w}$ corresponding to Grassmannian permutations. For any permutation $w \in S_n$ with column-convex Rothe diagram, we construct a polytope $\mathcal{P}_{w}$ whose integer point transform projects to the Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_{w}$. Such a construction has been sought after at least since the construction of twisted cubes by Grossberg and Karshon in 1994, whose integer point transforms project to Schubert polynomials $\mathfrak{S}_{w}$ for all $w \in S_n$. However, twisted cubes are not honest polytopes; rather one can think of them as signed polytopal complexes. Our polytope $\mathcal{P}_{w}$ is a convex polytope. We also show that $\mathcal{P}_{w}$ is a Minkowski sum of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes of varying sizes. When the permutation $w$ is Grassmannian, the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope is recovered. We conclude by showing that the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytope is a flow polytope.

Stack words and a bound for 3-stack sortable permutations
We use stack words to find a new, simple proof for the best known upper bound for the number of 3-stack sortable permutations of a given length. This is the first time that stack words are used to obtain such a result.
