Hook-length formula and applications to alternating permutations
In this paper, we take interest in finding applications for a hook-length formula recently proved in (Morales Pak Panova 2016). This formula can be applied to give a non trivial relation between alternating permutations and weighted Dyck paths. First, we give an alternative proof for this result using continued fractions, and then we apply a similar reasoning to the more general case of $k$-alternating permutations.

We establish a novel bijective encoding that represents permutations as forests of decorated (or enriched) trees. This allows us to prove local convergence of uniform random permutations from substitution-closed classes satisfying a criticality constraint. It also enables us to reprove and strengthen permuton limits for these classes in a new way, that uses a semi-local version of Aldous' skeleton decomposition for size-constrained Galton--Watson trees.

Two permutations in a class are Wilf-equivalent if, for every size, $n$, the number of permutations in the class of size $n$ containing each of them is the same. Those infinite classes that have only one equivalence class in each size for this relation are characterised provided either that they avoid at least one permutation of size 3, or at least three permutations of size 4.

Under what circumstances might every extension of a combinatorial structure contain more copies of another one than the original did? This property, which we call prolificity, holds universally in some cases (e.g., finite linear orders) and only trivially in others (e.g., permutations). Integer compositions, or equivalently layered permutations, provide a middle ground. In that setting, there are prolific compositions for a given pattern if and only if that pattern begins and ends with 1. For each pattern, there is an easily constructed automaton that recognises prolific compositions for that pattern. Some instances where there is a unique minimal prolific composition for a pattern are classified.
Divergent permutations
Two permutations of the natural numbers diverge if the absolute value of the difference of their elements in the same position goes to infinity. We show that there exists an infinite number of pairwise divergent permutations of the naturals. We relate this result to more general questions about the permutation capacity of infinite graphs.

We say that two graphs on the same vertex set are $G$-creating if their union (the union of their edges) contains $G$ as a subgraph. Let $H_n(G)$ be the maximum number of pairwise $G$-creating Hamiltonian paths of $K_n$. Cohen, Fachini and Körner proved \[n^{\frac{1}{2}n-o(n)}\leq H_n(C_4) \leq n^{\frac{3}{4}n+o(n)}.\] In this paper we close the superexponential gap between their lower and upper bounds by proving \[n^{\frac{1}{2}n-\frac{1}{2}\frac{n}{\log{n}}-O(1)}\leq H_n(C_4) \leq n^{\frac{1}{2}n+o\left(\frac{n}{\log{n}} \right)}.\] We also improve the previously established upper bounds on $H_n(C_{2k})$ for $k>3$, and we present a small improvement on the lower bound of Füredi, Kantor, Monti and Sinaimeri on the maximum number of so-called pairwise reversing permutations. One of our main tools is a theorem of Krivelevich, which roughly states that (certain kinds of) good expanders contain many Hamiltonian paths.

We consider the involutions known as "toggles," which have been used to give simplified proofs of the fundamental properties of the promotion and evacuation maps. We transfer these involutions so that they generate a group $\mathscr P_n$ that acts on the set $S_n$ of permutations of $\{1,\ldots,n\}$. After characterizing its orbits in terms of permutation skeletons, we apply the action in order to understand West's stack-sorting map. We obtain a very simple proof of a result that clarifies and extensively generalizes a theorem of Bouvel and Guibert and also generalizes a theorem of Bousquet-Mélou. We also settle a conjecture of Bouvel and Guibert. We prove a result related to the recently-introduced notion of postorder Wilf equivalence. Finally, we investigate an interesting connection among the action of $\mathscr P_n$ on $S_n$, the group structure of $S_n$, and the stack-sorting map.

We give a new and constructive proof of the existence of a special class of univariate polynomials whose graphs have preassigned shapes. By definition, all the critical points of a Morse polynomial function are real and distinct and all its critical values are distinct. Thus we can associate to it an alternating permutation: the so-called Arnold snake, given by the relative positions of its critical values. We realise any separable alternating permutation as the Arnold snake of a Morse polynomial.
A characterization of maximal 2-dimensional subgraphs of transitive graphs
A transitive graph is 2-dimensional if it can be represented as the intersection of two linear orders. Such representations make answering of reachability queries trivial, and allow many problems that are NP-hard on arbitrary graphs to be solved in polynomial time. One may therefore be interested in finding 2-dimensional graphs that closely approximate a given graph of arbitrary order dimension.
In this paper we show that the maximal 2-dimensional subgraphs of a transitive graph G are induced by the optimal near-transitive orientations of the complement of G. The same characterization holds for the maximal permutation subgraphs of a transitively orientable graph. We provide an algorithm that enables this problem reduction in near-linear time, and an approach for enlarging non-maximal 2-dimensional subgraphs, such as trees.
On some properties of the number of permutations being products of pairwise disjoint $d$-cycles
Let $d\geq 2$ be an integer. In this paper we study arithmetic properties of the sequence $(H_d(n))_{n\in\N}$, where $H_{d}(n)$ is the number of permutations in $S_{n}$ being products of pairwise disjoint cycles of a fixed length $d$. In particular we deal with periodicity modulo a given positive integer, behaviour of the $p$-adic valuations and various divisibility properties. Moreover, we introduce some related families of polynomials and study they properties. Among many results we obtain qualitative description of the $p$-adic valuation of the number $H_{d}(n)$ extending in this way earlier results of Ochiai and Ishihara, Ochiai, Takegehara and Yoshida.

Let $Ω_i$ and $Ω_j$ be the sets of elements of respective types $i$ and $j$ of a polar space~$Δ$ of rank at least $3$, viewed as a Tits-building. For any Weyl distance $δ$ between $Ω_i$ and $Ω_j$, we show that $δ$ is characterised by $i$ and $j$ and two additional numerical parameters $k$ and $\ell$. We consider permutations $ρ$ of $Ω_i \cup Ω_j$ that preserve a single Weyl distance $δ$. Up to a minor technical condition on $\ell$, we prove that, up to trivial cases and two classes of true exceptions, $ρ$ is induced by an automorphism of the Tits-building associated to $Δ$, which is always a type-preserving automorphism of $Δ$ (and hence preserving all Weyl-distances), unless $Δ$ is hyperbolic, in which case there are outer automorphisms. For each class of exceptions, we determine a Tits-building $Δ'$ in which $Δ$ naturally embeds and is such that $ρ$ is induced by an automorphism of $Δ'$. At the same time, we prove similar results for permutations preserving a natural incidence condition. These yield combinatorial characterisations of all groups of algebraic origin which are the full automorphism group of some polar space as the automorphism group of many bipartite graphs.

We describe the limit (for two topologies) of large uniform random square permutations, i.e., permutations where every point is a record. The starting point for all our results is a sampling procedure for asymptotically uniform square permutations. Building on that, we first describe the global behavior by showing that these permutations have a permuton limit which can be described by a random rectangle. We also explore fluctuations about this random rectangle, which we can describe through coupled Brownian motions. Second, we consider the limiting behavior of the neighborhood of a point in the permutation through local limits. As a byproduct, we also determine the random limits of the proportion of occurrences (and consecutive occurrences) of any given pattern in a uniform random square permutation.
Fertility, Strong Fertility, and Postorder Wilf Equivalence
We introduce "fertility Wilf equivalence," "strong fertility Wilf equivalence," and "postorder Wilf equivalence," three variants of Wilf equivalence for permutation classes that formalize some phenomena that have appeared in the study of West's stack-sorting map. We introduce "sliding operators" and show that they induce useful bijections among sets of valid hook configurations. Combining these maps with natural decompositions of valid hook configurations, we give infinitely many examples of fertility, strong fertility, and postorder Wilf equivalences. As a consequence, we obtain infinitely many joint equidistribution results concerning many permutation statistics. In one very special case, we reprove and extensively generalize a result of Bouvel and Guibert. Another case reproves and generalizes a result of the current author. A separate very special case proves and generalizes a conjecture of the current author concerning stack-sorting preimages and the Boolean-Catalan numbers. We end with two open questions.
The Sortability of Graphs and Matrices under Context Directed Swaps
The study of sorting permutations by block interchanges has recently been stimulated by a phenomenon observed in the genome maintenance of certain ciliate species. The result was the identification of a block interchange operation that applies only under certain constraints. Interestingly, this constrained block interchange operation can be generalized naturally to simple graphs and to an operation on square matrices. This more general context provides numerous techniques applicable to the original context. In this paper we consider the more general context, and obtain an enumeration, in closed form, of all simple graphs on n vertices that are ``sortable" by the graph analogue of the constrained version of block interchanges. We also obtain asymptotic results on the proportion of graphs on n vertices that are so sortable.

We give three applications of a recently-proven "Decomposition Lemma," which allows one to count preimages of certain sets of permutations under West's stack-sorting map $s$. We first enumerate the permutation class $s^{-1}(\text{Av}(231,321))=\text{Av}(2341,3241,45231)$, finding a new example of an unbalanced Wilf equivalence. This result is equivalent to the enumeration of permutations sortable by ${\bf B}\circ s$, where ${\bf B}$ is the bubble sort map. We then prove that the sets $s^{-1}(\text{Av}(231,312))$, $s^{-1}(\text{Av}(132,231))=\text{Av}(2341,1342,\underline{32}41,\underline{31}42)$, and $s^{-1}(\text{Av}(132,312))=\text{Av}(1342,3142,3412,34\underline{21})$ are counted by the so-called "Boolean-Catalan numbers," settling a conjecture of the current author and another conjecture of Hossain. This completes the enumerations of all sets of the form $s^{-1}(\text{Av}(τ^{(1)},\ldots,τ^{(r)}))$ for $\{τ^{(1)},\ldots,τ^{(r)}\}\subseteq S_3$ with the exception of the set $\{321\}$. We also find an explicit formula for $|s^{-1}(\text{Av}_{n,k}(231,312,321))|$, where $\text{Av}_{n,k}(231,312,321)$ is the set of permutations in $\text{Av}_n(231,312,321)$ with $k$ descents. This allows us to prove a conjectured identity involving Catalan numbers and order ideals in Young's lattice.
Descents in $t$-Sorted Permutations
Let $s$ denote West's stack-sorting map. A permutation is called $t-\textit{sorted}$ if it is of the form $s^t(μ)$ for some permutation $μ$. We prove that the maximum number of descents that a $t$-sorted permutation of length $n$ can have is $\left\lfloor\frac{n-t}{2}\right\rfloor$. When $n$ and $t$ have the same parity and $t\geq 2$, we give a simple characterization of those $t$-sorted permutations in $S_n$ that attain this maximum. In particular, the number of such permutations is $(n-t-1)!!$.
Catalan Intervals and Uniquely Sorted Permutations
For each positive integer $k$, we consider five well-studied posets defined on the set of Dyck paths of semilength $k$. We prove that uniquely sorted permutations avoiding various patterns are equinumerous with intervals in these posets. While most of our proofs are bijective, some use generating trees and generating functions. We end with several conjectures.

In this article we consider square permutations, a natural subclass of permutations defined in terms of geometric conditions, that can also be described in terms of pattern avoiding permutations, and convex permutoninoes, a related subclass of polyominoes. While these two classes of objects arised independently in various contexts, they play a natural role in the description of certain random horizontally and vertically convex grid configurations.
We propose a common approach to the enumeration of these two classes of objets that allows us to explain the known common form of their generating functions, and to derive new refined formulas and linear time random generation algorithms for these objects and the associated grid configurations.

An inversion sequence of length $n$ is an integer sequence $e=e_{1}e_{2}\dots e_{n}$ such that $0\leq e_{i}<i$ for each $i$. Corteel--Martinez--Savage--Weselcouch and Mansour--Shattuck began the study of patterns in inversion sequences, focusing on the enumeration of those that avoid classical patterns of length 3. We initiate an analogous systematic study of consecutive patterns in inversion sequences, namely patterns whose entries are required to occur in adjacent positions. We enumerate inversion sequences that avoid consecutive patterns of length 3, and generalize some results to patterns of arbitrary length. Additionally, we study the notion of Wilf equivalence of consecutive patterns in inversion sequences, as well as generalizations of this notion analogous to those studied for permutation patterns. We classify patterns of length up to 4 according to the corresponding Wilf equivalence relations.

We extend the author's formula (2011) of weighted counting of inversions on permutations to the one on alternating sign matrices. The proof is based on the sequential construction of alternating sign matrices from the unit matrix recently shown by Brualdi-Schroeder and the author (both 2017) independently.
