Asymptotics of self-overlapping permutations
Published in Discrete Math., vol. 348, Issue 5, May 2025, 114400 (2025) • View PublicationBIB
In this work, we study the concept of self-overlapping permutations, which is related to the larger study of consecutive patterns in permutations. We show that this concept admits a simple and clear geometrical meaning, and prove that a permutation can be represented as a sequence of non-self-overlapping ones. The above structural decomposition allows us to obtain equations for the corresponding generating functions, as well as the complete asymptotic expansions for the probability that a large random permutation is (non-)self-overlapping. In particular, we show that almost all permutations are non-self-overlapping, and that the corresponding asymptotic expansion has the self-reference property: the involved coefficients count non-self-overlapping permutations once again. We also establish complete asymptotic expansions of the distributions of very tight non-self-overlapping patterns, and discuss the similarities of the non-self-overlapping permutations to other permutation building blocks, such as indecomposable and simple permutations, as well as their associated asymptotics.

A bump statistic on permutations resulting from the Robinson-Schensted correspondence
Published in Ann. Comb. (2024) • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we investigate a permutation statistic that was independently introduced by Romik in 2005. This statistic counts the number of bumps that occur during the execution of the Robinson-Schensted procedure when applied to a given permutation. We provide several interpretations of this bump statistic that include the tableaux shape and also as an extremal problem concerning permutations and increasing subsequences. Several aspects of this bump statistic are investigated from both structural and enumerative viewpoints.

Two associative operads of packed words
The associative operad is a central structure in operad theory, defined on the linear span of the set of permutations. We build two analogs of the associative operad on the linear span of the set of packed words which turn out to be set-theoretical. By seeing a packed word as a surjective map between two finite sets, our first operad is graded by the cardinality of the domain and the second one, by the cardinality of the codomain. In the same way as the associative operad of permutations contains as quotients the duplicial and interstice operads, we derive similar structures for our operads of packed words. We propose also an analogue of Dynkin idempotent of Zie algebras in this context of operads of packed words.

The Hierarchy of Hereditary Sorting Operators
Published in Proceedings of the 2024 Annual ACM-SIAM Symposium on Discrete Algorithms (SODA) • View PublicationBIB
We consider the following general model of a sorting procedure: we fix a hereditary permutation class $\mathcal{C}$, which corresponds to the operations that the procedure is allowed to perform in a single step. The input of sorting is a permutation $π$ of the set $[n]=\{1,2,\dotsc,n\}$, i.e., a sequence where each element of $[n]$ appears once. In every step, the sorting procedure picks a permutation $σ$ of length $n$ from $\mathcal{C}$, and rearranges the current permutation of numbers by composing it with $σ$. The goal is to transform the input $π$ into the sorted sequence $1,2,\dotsc,n$ in as few steps as possible. This model of sorting captures not only classical sorting algorithms, like insertion sort or bubble sort, but also sorting by series of devices, like stacks or parallel queues, as well as sorting by block operations commonly considered, e.g., in the context of genome rearrangement. Our goal is to describe the possible asymptotic behavior of the worst-case number of steps needed when sorting with a hereditary permutation class. As the main result, we show that any hereditary permutation class $\mathcal{C}$ falls into one of five distinct categories. Disregarding the classes that cannot sort all permutations, the number of steps needed to sort any permutation of $[n]$ with $\mathcal{C}$ is either $Θ(n^2)$, a function between $O(n)$ and $Ω(\sqrt{n})$, a function betwee $O(\log^2 n)$ and $Ω(\log n), or $1$, and for each of these cases we provide a structural characterization of the corresponding hereditary classes.

On naturally labelled posets and permutations avoiding 12-34
A partial order $\prec$ on $[n]$ is naturally labelled (NL) if $x\prec y$ implies $x<y$. We establish a bijection between {3, 2+2}-free NL posets and 12-34-avoiding permutations, determine functional equations satisfied by their generating function, and use series analysis to investigate their asymptotic growth, presenting evidence of stretched exponential behaviour. We also exhibit bijections between 3-free NL posets and various other objects, and determine their generating function. The connection between our results and a hierarchy of combinatorial objects related to interval orders is described.

On the trace-zero doubly stochastic matrices of order 5
Published in Linear Algebra and its Applications, 2024 • Search Publication
We propose a graph theoretic approach to determine trace of product of two permutation matrices through a weighted digraph representation of the permutation matrices. Consequently, we derive trace-zero doubly stochastic (DS) matrices of order $5$ whose $k$-th power is also a trace-zero DS matrix for $k\in\{2,3,4,5\}$. Then, we determine necessary conditions for the coefficients of a generic polynomial of degree $5$ to be realizable as the characteristic polynomial of a trace-zero DS matrix of order $5$. Finally, we approximate the eigenvalue region of trace-zero DS matrices of order $5.$
Characterizing positroid quotients of uniform matroids
We study two-step flag positroids $(P_1, P_2)$, where $P_1$ is a quotient of $P_{2}$. We provide a complete characterization of all two-step flag positroids that contain a uniform matroid, extending and completing a partial result by Benedetti, Chávez, and Jiménez. To contrast general positroids with the special case of lattice path matroids, we show that the containment relations of Grassmann necklaces and conecklaces fully characterize flag lattice path matroids, but are insufficient for general flag positroids. Additionally, we prove that the decorated permutations of any elementary quotient pair are related by a cyclic shift, resolving a conjecture of Benedetti, Chávez and Jiménez.
Geometric Bruhat order on (0,1)-matrices
The combinatorially and the geometrically defined partial orders on the set of permutations coincide. We extend this result to $(0,1)$-matrices with fixed row and column sums. Namely, the Bruhat order induced by the geometry of a Cherkis bow variety of type A coincides with one of the two combinatorially defined Bruhat orders on the same set.

Signed Poset Polytopes
Stanley introduced in 1986 the order polytope and the chain polytope for a given finite poset. These polytopes contain much information about the poset and have given rise to important examples in polyhedral geometry. In 1993, Reiner introduced signed posets as natural type-B analogues of posets. We define and study signed order and chain polytopes. Our results include convex-hull and halfspace descriptions, unimodular triangulations, Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomials and their relations to signed permutation statistics, and a Gorenstein characterization of signed order and chain polytopes.

Principal specializations of Schubert polynomials, multi-layered permutations and asymptotics
Let $v(n)$ be the largest principal specialization of Schubert polynomials for layered permutations $v(n) := \max_{w \in \mathcal{L}_n} \mathfrak{S}_w(1,\ldots,1)$. Morales, Pak and Panova proved that there is a limit \[\lim_{n \to \infty} \frac{\log v(n)}{n^2},\] and gave a precise description of layered permutations reaching the maximum. In this paper, we extend Morales Pak and Panova's results to generalized principal specialization $\mathfrak{S}_w(1,q,q^2,\ldots)$ for multi-layered permutations when $q$ equals a root of unity.
On the cardinality of irredundant and minimal bases of finite permutation groups
Given a finite permutation group $G$ with domain $Ω$, we associate two subsets of natural numbers to $G$, namely $\mathcal{I}(G,Ω)$ and $\mathcal{M}(G,Ω)$, which are the sets of cardinalities of all the irredundant and minimal bases of $G$, respectively. We prove that $\mathcal{I}(G)$ is an interval of natural numbers, whereas $\mathcal{M}(G,Ω)$ may not necessarily form an interval. Moreover, for a given subset of natural numbers $X \subseteq \mathbb{N}$, we provide some conditions on $X$ that ensure the existence of both intransitive and transitive groups $G$ such that $\mathcal{I}(G,Ω) = X$ and $\mathcal{M}(G,Ω) = X$.

Limit theorems for fixed point biased permutations avoiding a pattern of length three
We prove limit theorems for the number of fixed points occurring in a random pattern-avoiding permutation distributed according to a one-parameter family of biased distributions. The bias parameter exponentially tilts the distribution towards favoring permutations with more or fewer fixed points than is typical under the uniform distribution. One case we study features a phase transition where the limiting distribution changes abruptly from negative binomial to Rayleigh to normal depending on the bias parameter.

Joint distributions of statistics over permutations avoiding two patterns of length 3
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 26:1, Permutation Patterns 2023, Special issues (November 4, 2024) dmtcs:12517 • View PublicationBIB
Finding distributions of permutation statistics over pattern-avoiding classes of permutations attracted much attention in the literature. In particular, Bukata et al. found distributions of ascents and descents on permutations avoiding any two patterns of length 3. In this paper, we generalize these results in two different ways: we find explicit formulas for the joint distribution of six statistics (asc, des, lrmax, lrmin, rlmax, rlmin), and also explicit formulas for the joint distribution of four statistics (asc, des, MNA, MND) on these permutations in all cases. The latter result also extends the recent studies by Kitaev and Zhang of the statistics MNA and MND (related to non-overlapping occurrences of ascents and descents) on stack-sortable permutations. All multivariate generating functions in our paper are rational, and we provide combinatorial proofs of five equidistribution results that can be derived from the generating functions.

On the combinatorics of $k$-Naples parking functions and parking strategies
We propose a characterization of $k$-Naples parking functions in terms of subsequences with the structure of a complete $k$-Naples parking function. We define complete parking preferences by requiring that for all $j=2,\dots,n$, the number of cars having preference at least $j$ is strictly greater than the number of spots in $[j,n]$. We also provide a characterization of permutation invariant $k$-Naples parking functions. Finally, we introduce a generalization of the parking problem where each car is given its own parking rule, by defining parking strategies as vectors of rules that allow all cars to park. Given a parking preference, we also investigate ways to find parking strategies that minimize certain natural parameters, such as the total number of backward steps, or the number of cars that need to drive backwards.
Permutation Tutte polynomial
The classical Tutte polynomial is a two-variate polynomial $T_G(x,y)$ associated to graphs or more generally, matroids. In this paper, we introduce a polynomial $\widetilde{T}_H(x,y)$ associated to a bipartite graph $H$ that we call the permutation Tutte polynomial of the graph $H$. It turns out that $T_G(x,y)$ and $\widetilde{T}_H(x,y)$ share many properties, and the permutation Tutte polynomial serves as a tool to study the classical Tutte polynomial. We discuss the analogs of Brylawsi's identities and Conde--Merino--Welsh type inequalities. In particular, we will show that if $H$ does not contain isolated vertices, then $$\widetilde{T}_H(3,0)\widetilde{T}_H(0,3)\geq \widetilde{T}_H(1,1)^2,$$ which gives a short proof to the analogous result of Jackson: $$T_G(3,0)T_G(0,3)\geq T_G(1,1)^2$$ for graphs without loops and bridges. We also improve on the constant $3$ in this statement by showing that one can replace it with $2.9243$.

The differential properties of certain permutation polynomials over finite fields
Finding functions, particularly permutations, with good differential properties has received a lot of attention due to their varied applications. For instance, in combinatorial design theory, a correspondence of perfect $c$-nonlinear functions and difference sets in some quasigroups was recently shown by Anbar et al. (J. Comb. Des. 31(12):1-24, 2023). Additionally, in a recent manuscript by Pal et al. (Adv. Math. Communications, to appear), a very interesting connection between the $c$-differential uniformity and boomerang uniformity, when $c=-1$, was pointed out, showing that they are the same for an odd APN permutation, sparking yet more interest in the construction of functions with low $c$-differential uniformity. We investigate the $c$-differential uniformity of some classes of permutation polynomials. As a result, we add four more classes of permutation polynomials to the family of functions that only contains a few (non-trivial) perfect $c$-nonlinear functions over finite fields of even characteristic. Moreover, we include a class of permutation polynomials with low $c$-differential uniformity over the field of characteristic~$3$. To solve the involved equations over finite fields, we use various number theoretical techniques, in particular, we find explicitly many Walsh transform coefficients and Weil sums that may be of an independent interest.

Value sets of non-permutation polynomials over the residue class rings of integers
In this paper, we study the value sets of non-permutation polynomial functions over the residue class ring $\mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$. When $m=p^r$ is a power of some prime $p$, an upper bound is given for the size of the value set of a polynomial function which is not a permutation. We also show that this upper bound can be achieved by some integral polynomials. Finally, we generalize the results for any positive integer $m$ with known prime decomposition.

Regular Schur labeled skew shape posets and their 0-Hecke modules
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma(2024) • Search Publication
Assuming Stanley's $P$-partition conjecture holds, the regular Schur labeled skew shape posets with underlying set $\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$ are precisely the posets $P$ such that the $P$-partition generating function is symmetric and the set of linear extensions of $P$, denoted $Σ_L(P)$, is a left weak Bruhat interval in the symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$. We describe the permutations in $Σ_L(P)$ in terms of reading words of standard Young tableaux when $P$ is a regular Schur labeled skew shape poset, and classify $Σ_L(P)$'s up to descent-preserving isomorphism as $P$ ranges over regular Schur labeled skew shape posets. The results obtained are then applied to classify the $0$-Hecke modules $\mathsf{M}_P$ associated with regular Schur labeled skew shape posets $P$ up to isomorphism. Then we characterize regular Schur labeled skew shape posets as the posets whose linear extensions form a dual plactic-closed subset of $\mathfrak{S}_n$. Using this characterization, we construct distinguished filtrations of $\mathsf{M}_P$ with respect to the Schur basis when $P$ is a regular Schur labeled skew shape poset. Further issues concerned with the classification and decomposition of the $0$-Hecke modules $\mathsf{M}_P$ are also discussed.

Asymptotic independence for random permutations from surface groups
Let $X$ be an orientable hyperbolic surface of genus $g\geq 2$ with a marked point $o$, and let $Γ$ be an orientable hyperbolic surface group isomorphic to $π_{1}(X,o)$. Consider the space $\text{Hom}(Γ,S_{n})$ which corresponds to $n$-sheeted covers of $X$ with labeled fiber. Given $γ\inΓ$ and a uniformly random $φ\in\text{Hom}(Γ,S_{n})$, what is the expected number of fixed points of $φ(γ)$? Formally, let $F_{n}(γ)$ denote the number of fixed points of $φ(γ)$ for a uniformly random $φ\in\text{Hom}(Γ,S_{n})$. We think of $F_{n}(γ)$ as a random variable on the space $\text{Hom}(Γ,S_{n})$. We show that an arbitrary fixed number of products of the variables $F_{n}(γ)$ are asymptotically independent as $n\to\infty$ when there are no obvious obstructions. We also determine the limiting distribution of such products. Additionally, we examine short cycle statistics in random permutations of the form $φ(γ)$ for a uniformly random $φ\in\text{Hom}(Γ,S_{n})$. We show a similar asymptotic independence result and determine the limiting distribution.

Explicit formulas for permutation pattern character polynomials
Given permutations $π\in S_n$ and $σ\in S_k$, let $N_σ(π)$ denote the number of occurrences of $σ$ in $π$. While pattern avoidance and the distribution of pattern occurrences in permutations have been extensively studied, their interactions with the group structure on $S_n$ are still poorly understood. Gaetz and Ryba showed that the expected value of $χ^{λ[n]}(π)N_σ(π)$ for $π\in S_n$ is given by a polynomial $a_σ^λ(n)$. More recently, Gaetz and Pierson derived explicit formulas for $a_{\mathrm{id}_k}^λ(n)$ when $\lvertλ\rvert \le 2$, which led them to conjecture that the polynomials $a_{\mathrm{id}_k}^λ(n)$ are real-rooted and nonnegative for $n \ge k$. We show that for all partitions $λ$, the polynomials $a_{\mathrm{id}_k}^λ(n)$ admit explicit closed forms in $n$ and $k$. These formulas allow us to exhibit counterexamples to Gaetz and Pierson's real-rootedness conjecture as well as to prove special cases of their nonnegativity conjecture. Lastly, we note that our results imply that the expected value of $f \cdot N_{\mathrm{id}_k}$ on $S_n$ admits a closed form whenever $f$ is a permutation statistic expressible as a polynomial in the functions $m_j \colon \bigsqcup_{n \ge 0} S_n \to \mathbb{Z}$ which count $j$-cycles in their inputs.
