Large independent sets in recursive Markov random graphs
Published in Mathematics of Operations Research, Articles in Advance, pp. 1--24, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
Computing the maximum size of an independent set in a graph is a famously hard combinatorial problem that has been well-studied for various classes of graphs. When it comes to random graphs, only the classical Erdős-Rényi-Gilbert random graph $G_{n,p}$ has been analysed and shown to have largest independent sets of size $Θ(\log{n})$ w.h.p. This classical model does not capture any dependency structure between edges that can appear in real-world networks. We initiate study in this direction by defining random graphs $G^{r}_{n,p}$ whose existence of edges is determined by a Markov process that is also governed by a decay parameter $r\in(0,1]$. We prove that w.h.p. $G^{r}_{n,p}$ has independent sets of size $(\frac{1-r}{2+ε}) \frac{n}{\log{n}}$ for arbitrary $ε> 0$, which implies an asymptotic lower bound of $Ω(π(n))$ where $π(n)$ is the prime-counting function. This is derived using bounds on the terms of a harmonic series, Turán bound on stability number, and a concentration analysis for a certain sequence of dependent Bernoulli variables that may also be of independent interest. Since $G^{r}_{n,p}$ collapses to $G_{n,p}$ when there is no decay, it follows that having even the slightest bit of dependency (any $r < 1$) in the random graph construction leads to the presence of large independent sets and thus our random model has a phase transition at its boundary value of $r=1$. For the maximal independent set output by a greedy algorithm, we deduce that it has a performance ratio of at most $1 + \frac{\log{n}}{(1-r)}$ w.h.p. when the lowest degree vertex is picked at each iteration, and also show that under any other permutation of vertices the algorithm outputs a set of size $Ω(n^{1/1+τ})$, where $τ=1/(1-r)$, and hence has a performance ratio of $O(n^{\frac{1}{2-r}})$.

Learning the Quality of Machine Permutations in Job Shop Scheduling
Published • View PublicationBIB
In recent years, the power demonstrated by Machine Learning (ML) has increasingly attracted the interest of the optimization community that is starting to leverage ML for enhancing and automating the design of algorithms. One combinatorial optimization problem recently tackled with ML is the Job Shop scheduling Problem (JSP). Most of the works on the JSP using ML focus on Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), and only a few of them leverage supervised learning techniques. The recurrent reasons for avoiding supervised learning seem to be the difficulty in casting the right learning task, i.e., what is meaningful to predict, and how to obtain labels. Therefore, we first propose a novel supervised learning task that aims at predicting the quality of machine permutations. Then, we design an original methodology to estimate this quality, and we use these estimations to create an accurate sequential deep learning model (binary accuracy above 95%). Finally, we empirically demonstrate the value of predicting the quality of machine permutations by enhancing the performance of a simple Tabu Search algorithm inspired by the works in the literature.

Counting rotational subsets of the circle $\mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$ under the angle multiplying map $t\mapsto dt$
A rotational set is a finite subset $A$ of the unit circle $\mathbb{T}=\mathbb{R}/ \mathbb{Z}$ such that the angle-multiplying map $σ_{d}:t\mapsto dt$ maps $A$ onto itself by a cyclic permutation of its elements. Each rotational set has a geometric rotation number $p/q$. These sets were introduced by Lisa Goldberg to study the dynamics of complex polynomial maps. In this paper we provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a set to be $σ_{d}$-rotational with rotation number $p/q$. As applications of our condition, we recover two classical results and enumerate $σ_d$-rotational sets with rotation number $p/q$ that consist of a given number of orbits.

Permutons, meanders, and SLE-decorated Liouville quantum gravity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study a class of random permutons which can be constructed from a pair of space-filling Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) curves on a Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) surface. This class includes the skew Brownian permutons introduced by Borga (2021), which describe the scaling limit of various types of random pattern-avoiding permutations. Another interesting permuton in our class is the meandric permuton, which corresponds to two independent SLE$_8$ curves on a $γ$-LQG surface with $γ= \sqrt{\frac13 \left( 17 - \sqrt{145} \right)}$. Building on work by Di Francesco, Golinelli, and Guitter (2000), we conjecture that the meandric permuton describes the scaling limit of uniform meandric permutations, i.e., the permutations induced by a simple loop in the plane which crosses a line a specified number of times. We show that for any sequence of random permutations which converges to one of the above random permutons, the length of the longest increasing subsequence is sublinear. This proves that the length of the longest increasing subsequence is sublinear for Baxter, strong-Baxter, and semi-Baxter permutations and leads to the conjecture that the same is true for meandric permutations. We also prove that the closed support of each of the random permutons in our class has Hausdorff dimension one. Finally, we prove a re-rooting invariance property for the meandric permuton and write down a formula for its expected pattern densities in terms of LQG correlation functions (which are known explicitly) and the probability that an SLE$_8$ hits a given set of points in numerical order (which is not known explicitly). We conclude with a list of open problems.

Derangements in wreath products of permutation groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a finite group $G$ acting on a set $X$ let $δ_k(G,X)$ denote the proportion of elements in $G$ that have exactly $k$ fixed points in $X$. Let $\mathrm{S}_n$ denote the symmetric group acting on $[n]=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$. For $A\le\mathrm{S}_m$ and $B\le\mathrm{S}_n$, the permutational wreath product $A\wr B$ has two natural actions and we give formulas for both, $δ_k(A\wr B,[m]{\times}[n])$ and $δ_k(A\wr B,[m]^{[n]})$. We prove that for $k=0$ the values of these proportions are dense in the intervals $[δ_0(B,[n]),1]$ and $[δ_0(A,[m]),1]$. Among further result, we provide estimates for $δ_0(G,[m]^{[n]})$ for subgroups $G\leq \mathrm{S}_m\wr\mathrm{S}_n$ containing $\mathrm{A}_m^{[n]}$.

On the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)$ weight system
Published • View PublicationBIB
To a finite type knot invariant, a weight system can be associated, which is a function on chord diagrams satisfying so-called $4$-term relations. In the opposite direction, each weight system determines a finite type knot invariant. In particular, a weight system can be associated to any metrized Lie algebra, and any metrized Lie superalgebra. However, computation of these weight systems is complicated. In the recent paper by the present author, an extension of the $\mathfrak{gl}(N)$-weight system to arbitrary permutations is defined, which allows one to develop a recurrence relation for an efficient computation of its values. In addition, the result proves to be universal, valid for all values of $N$ and allowing thus to define a unifying $\mathfrak{gl}$-weight system taking values in the ring of polynomials in infinitely many variables $C_0=N,C_1,C_2,\dots$. In the present paper, we extend this construction to the weight system associated to the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)$. Then we prove that the $\mathfrak{gl}(m|n)$-weight system is equivalent to the $\mathfrak{gl}$-one, under the substitution $C_0=m-n$.

Lenart's bijection via bumpless pipe dreams
Published • View PublicationBIB
Pipe dreams and bumpless pipe dreams for vexillary permutations are each known to be in bijection with certain semistandard tableaux via maps due to Lenart and Weigandt, respectively. Recently, Gao and Huang have defined a bijection between the former two sets. In this note we show for vexillary permutations that the Gao-Huang bijection preserves the associated tableaux, giving a new proof of Lenart's result. Our methods extend to give a recording tableau for any bumpless pipe dream.

Bumpless pipe dream RSK, growth diagrams, and Schubert structure constants
We introduce analogs of left and right RSK insertion for Schubert calculus of complete flag varieties. The objects being inserted are certain biwords, the insertion objects are bumpless pipe dreams, and the recording objects are decorated chains in Bruhat order. As an application, we adopt Lenart's growth diagrams of permutations to give a combinatorial rule for Schubert structure constants in the separated descent case.

Dirichlet law for factorization of integers, polynomials and permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $k \geq 2$ be an integer. We prove that factorization of integers into $k$ parts follows the Dirichlet distribution $\text{Dir}\left(\frac{1}{k},\ldots,\frac{1}{k}\right)$ by multidimensional contour integration, thereby generalizing the Deshouillers-Dress-Tenenbaum (DDT) arcsine law on divisors where $k=2$. The same holds for factorization of polynomials or permutations. Dirichlet distribution with arbitrary parameters can be modelled similarly.
Topological recursion for Orlov-Scherbin tau functions, and constellations with internal faces
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the correlators $W_{g,n}$ arising from Orlov-Scherbin 2-Toda tau functions with rational content-weight $G(z)$, at arbitrary values of the two sets of time parameters. Combinatorially, they correspond to generating functions of weighted Hurwitz numbers and $(m,r)$-factorisations of permutations. When the weight function is polynomial, they are generating functions of constellations on surfaces in which two full sets of degrees (black/white) are entirely controlled, and in which internal faces are allowed in addition to boundaries. We give the spectral curve (the "disk" function $W_{0,1}$, and the "cylinder" function $W_{0,2}$) for this model, generalising Eynard's solution of the 2-matrix model which corresponds to $G(z)=1+z$, by the addition of arbitrarily many free parameters. Our method relies both on the Albenque-Bouttier combinatorial proof of Eynard's result by slice decompositions, which is strong enough to handle the polynomial case, and on algebraic arguments. Building on this, we establish the topological recursion (TR) for the model. Our proof relies on the fact that TR is already known at time zero (or, combinatorially, when the underlying graphs have only boundaries, and no internal faces) by work of Bychkov-Dunin-Barkowski-Kazarian-Shadrin (or Alexandrov-Chapuy-Eynard-Harnad for the polynomial case), and on the general idea of deformation of spectral curves due to Eynard and Orantin, which we make explicit in this case. As a result of TR, we obtain strong structure results for all fixed-genus generating functions.

An extended Demazure product on integer permutations via min-plus matrix multiplication
Coxeter groups possess an associative operation, called variously the Demazure, greedy, or $0$-Hecke product. For symmetric groups, this product has an amusing formulation as matrix multiplication in the min-plus (tropical) semiring of two matrices associated to the permutations. We prove that this min-plus formulation extends to furnish a Demazure product on a much larger group of integer permutations, consisting of all permutations that change the sign of finite many integers. We prove several alternative descriptions of this product and some useful properties of it. These results were developed in service of future applications to Brill-Noether theory of algebraic and tropical curves; the connection is surveyed in an appendix.
Homomesies on permutations -- an analysis of maps and statistics in the FindStat database
Published in Mathematics of Computation 93 (2024), no. 346, 921-976 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we perform a systematic study of permutation statistics and bijective maps on permutations in which we identify and prove 122 instances of the homomesy phenomenon. Homomesy occurs when the average value of a statistic is the same on each orbit of a given map. The maps we investigate include the Lehmer code rotation, the reverse, the complement, the Foata bijection, and the Kreweras complement. The statistics studied relate to familiar notions such as inversions, descents, and permutation patterns, and also more obscure constructs. Beside the many new homomesy results, we discuss our research method, in which we used SageMath to search the FindStat combinatorial statistics database to identify potential homomesies.

Ranks, copulas, and permutons
Published • View PublicationBIB
We review a recent development at the interface between discrete mathematics on one hand and probability theory and statistics on the other, specifically the use of Markov chains and their boundary theory in connection with the asymptotics of randomly growing permutations. Permutations connect total orders on a finite set, which leads to the use of a pattern frequencies. This view is closely related to classical concepts of nonparametric statistics. We give several applications and discuss related topics and research areas, in particular the treatment of other combinatorial families, the cycle view of permutations, and an approach via exchangeability.
On five types of crucial permutations with respect to monotone patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
A crucial permutation is a permutation that avoids a given set of prohibitions, but any of its extensions, in an allowable way, results in a prohibition being introduced. In this paper, we introduce five natural types of crucial permutations with respect to monotone patterns, notably quadrocrucial permutations that are linked most closely to Erdős-Szekeres extremal permutations. The way we define right-crucial and bicrucial permutations is consistent with the definition of respective permutations studied in the literature in the contexts of other prohibitions. For each of the five types, we provide its characterization in terms of Young tableaux via the RSK correspondence. Moreover, we use the characterizations to prove that the number of such permutations of length $n$ is growing when $n\to\infty$, and to enumerate minimal crucial permutations in all but one case. We also provide other enumerative results.

Enumeration of Tableaux of Unusual Shapes
In this thesis we enumerate standard young tableaux (SYT) of certain truncated skew shapes, which we call battery shapes. This is motivated by a chess problem. In an enumerative chess problem, the set of moves in the solution is (usually) unique, but the order is not. The task of counting the feasible permutations may be accomplished by solving an equivalent problem in enumerative combinatorics. Almost all such problems have been of a special type known as series movers. In this thesis we use generalized hypergeometric functions to enumerate SYT of battery shapes, and thus solve a chess problem posed by Buchanan.

Canonical bases and new applications of increasing and decreasing subsequences to invariant theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 2012 Raghavan, Samuel, and Subrahmanyam showed that the Kazhdan--Lusztig basis for the Iwahori--Hecke algebra in type A provides a ``canonical'' basis for the centraliser algebra of the Schur algebra acting on tensor space. In 2022 the second author found a similar result for the centraliser of the partition algebra acting on the same tensor space. Each basis is indexed by permutations. We exploit these bases to show that the linear decomposition of an arbitrary invariant (in either centraliser algebra) depends integrally on its entries, and describe combinatorial rules that pick out minimal sets of such entries.

Counting derangements with signed right-to-left minima and excedances
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently Alexandersson and Getachew proved some multivariate generalizations of a formula for enumerating signed excedances in derangements. In this paper we first relate their work to a recent continued fraction for permutations and confirm some of their observations. Our second main result is two refinements of their multivariate identities, which clearly explain the meaning of each term in their main formulas. We also explore some similar formulas for permutations of type B.
New Bounds on the Size of Permutation Codes With Minimum Kendall $τ$-distance of Three
We study $P(n,3)$, the size of the largest subset of the set of all permutations $S_n$ with minimum Kendall $τ$-distance $3$. Using a combination of group theory and integer programming, we reduced the upper bound of $P(p,3)$ from $(p-1)!-1$ to $(p-1)!-\lceil\frac{p}{3}\rceil+2\leq (p-1)!-2$ for all primes $p\geq 11$. In special cases where $n$ is equal to $6,7,11,13,14,15$ and $17$ we reduced the upper bound of $P(n,3)$ by $3,3,9,11,1,1$ and $4$, respectively.

Pattern bounds for principal specializations of $β$-Grothendieck Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
There has been recent interest in lower bounds for the principal specializations of Schubert polynomials $ν_w := \mathfrak S_w(1,\dots,1)$. We prove a conjecture of Yibo Gao in the setting of $1243$-avoiding permutations that gives a lower bound for $ν_w$ in terms of the permutation patterns contained in $w$. We extended this result to principal specializations of $β$-Grothendieck polynomials $ν^{(β)}_w := \mathfrak G^{(β)}_w(1,\dots,1)$ by restricting to the class of vexillary $1243$-avoiding permutations. Our methods are bijective, offering a combinatorial interpretation of the coefficients $c_w$ and $c^{(β)}_w$ appearing in these conjectures.

A Stirling-type formula for the distribution of the length of longest increasing subsequences
Published in Found. Comput. Math. 24:915-953 (2024) • View PublicationBIB
The discrete distribution of the length of longest increasing subsequences in random permutations of $n$ integers is deeply related to random matrix theory. In a seminal work, Baik, Deift and Johansson provided an asymptotics in terms of the distribution of the scaled largest level of the large matrix limit of GUE. As a numerical approximation, however, this asymptotics is inaccurate for small $n$ and has a slow convergence rate, conjectured to be just of order $n^{-1/3}$. Here, we suggest a different type of approximation, based on Hayman's generalization of Stirling's formula. Such a formula gives already a couple of correct digits of the length distribution for $n$ as small as $20$ but allows numerical evaluations, with a uniform error of apparent order $n^{-2/3}$, for $n$ as large as $10^{12}$; thus closing the gap between a table of exact values (compiled for up to $n=1000$) and the random matrix limit. Being much more efficient and accurate than Monte-Carlo simulations, the Stirling-type formula allows for a precise numerical understanding of the first few finite size correction terms to the random matrix limit. From this we derive expansions of the expected value and variance of the length, exhibiting several more terms than previously put forward.
