Motivated by a problem arising out of DNA origami, we give a general counting framework and enumeration formulas for various cellular embeddings of bouquets and dipoles under different kinds of symmetries. Our algebraic framework can be used constructively to generate desired symmetry classes, and we use Burnside's Lemma with various symmetry groups to derive the enumeration formulas. Our results assimilate several existing formulas into this unified framework. Furthermore, we provide new formulas for bouquets with colored edges (and thus for bouquets in nonorientable surfaces) as well as for directed embeddings of directed bouquets. We also enumerate vertex-labeled dipole embeddings. Since dipole embeddings may be represented by permutations, the formulas also apply to certain equivalence classes of permutations and permutation matrices. The resulting bouquet and dipole symmetry formulas enumerate structures relevant to a wide variety of areas in addition to DNA origami, including RNA secondary structures, Feynman diagrams, and topological graph theory. For uncolored objects we catalog 58 distinct sequences, of which 43 have not, as far as we know, been described previously.
Characters of local and regular permutation statistics
The goal of this monograph is to study the indicator function for a set of permutations mapping one finite sequence of positive integers to another from a representation theoretic, combinatorial and probabilistic perspective. The degree of a function of permutations is the size of the largest pair of sequences required when expressing it as a linear combination of these indicators. This notion of degree, implicit in work of Diaconis, is critical for many applications of representation theory to extremal combinatorics, machine learning, probability and statistics. We use the term local to indicate bounded degree and initiate the study of low degree class functions, which encode probabilistic data for permutation statistics on each cycle type simultaneously.
We begin with a self contained treatment of for functions of permutations, developing its theory using language familiar to enumerative and algebraic combinatorialists. This leads naturally to a novel basis for symmetric functions we call the path power sum symmetric functions. The most technically challenging part of our work is the path Murnaghan-Nakayama formula, which expands path power sums into Schur functions. By combining the the path Murnaghan-Nakayam formula with the classical theory of character polynomials, one obtains a structural characterization for moments for permutation statistics conditioning on cycle type. We then analyze asymptotic properties of these moments. In doing so, we introduce the novel family of regular permutation statistics, which include almost all reasonable weighted pattern counting statistics. We show a large family of regular statistics satisfy a law of large numbers on a given cycle type depending only on the proportion of fixed points and a have variances depending only on fixed points and two cycles.
Barcode Posets: Combinatorial Properties and Connections
A barcode is a finite multiset of intervals on the real line, $B = \{ (b_i, d_i)\}_{i=1}^n$. Barcodes are important objects in topological data analysis, where they serve as summaries of the persistent homology groups of a filtration. The combinatorial properties of barcodes have also been studied, mainly in the context of interval orders and interval graphs. In this paper, we define a new family of maps from the space of barcodes with $n$ bars to the permutation sets of various multisets, known as multipermutations. These multipermutations provide new combinatorial invariants on the space of barcodes. We then define an order relation on these multipermutations, which we show can be interpreted as a crossing number for barcodes, reminiscent of Túran's crossing number for graphs. Next, we show that the resulting posets are order-isomorphic to principal ideals of a well known poset known as the multinomial Newman lattice. Consequently, these posets form the graded face-lattices of polytopes, which we refer to as barcode lattices or barcode polytopes. Finally, we show that for a large class of barcodes, these invariants can provide bounds on the Wasserstein and bottleneck distances between a pair of barcodes, linking these discrete invariants to continuous metrics on barcodes.
Fast synchronization of inhomogenous random automata
We examine the reset threshold of randomly generated deterministic automata. We present a simple proof that an automaton with a random mapping and two random permutation letters has a reset threshold of $\mathcal{O}\big( \sqrt{n \log^3 n} \big)$ with high probability, assuming only certain partial independence of the letters. Our observation is motivated by Nicaud (2014) providing a near-linear bound in the case of two random mapping letters, among multiple other results. The upper bound for the latter case has been recently improved by the breakthrough work of Chapuy and Perarnau (2023) to $\mathcal{O}(\sqrt{n} \log n)$.

In this paper, we prove that every PP is an AGW-PP. We also extend the result of Wan and Lidl to other permutation polynomials over finite fields and determine their group structure. Moreover, we provide a new general method to find the compositional inverses of all PPs, some new PPs and their compositional inverses are given.
Large deviation principle for random permutations

We derive a large deviation principle for random permutations induced by probability measures of the unit square, called permutons. These permutations are called $μ$-random permutations. We also introduce and study a new general class of models of random permutations, called Gibbs permutation models, which combines and generalizes $μ$-random permutations and the celebrated Mallows model for permutations. Most of our results hold in the general setting of Gibbs permutation models.
We apply the tools that we develop to the case of $μ$-random permutations conditioned to have an atypical proportion of patterns. Several results are made more concrete in the specific case of inversions. For instance, we prove the existence of at least one phase transition for a generalized version of the Mallows model where the base measure is non-uniform. This is in contrast with the results of Starr (2009, 2018) on the (standard) Mallows model, where the absence of phase transition, i.e., phase uniqueness, was proven.
Our results naturally lead us to investigate a new notion of permutons, called conditionally constant permutons, which generalizes both pattern-avoiding and pattern-packing permutons. We describe some properties of conditionally constant permutons with respect to inversions. The study of conditionally constant permutons for general patterns seems to be a challenging problem.

Let $σ$ be a permutation of a nonempty finite or countably infinite set $X$ and let $F_X\left( σ^k\right)$ count the number of fixed points of the $k$th power of $σ$. This paper explains how the arithmetic function $k \mapsto \left(F_X\left( σ^k\right) \right)_{k=1}^{\infty}$ determines the conjugacy class of the permutation $σ$, constructs an algorithm to compute the conjugacy class from the fixed point counting function $F_X\left( σ^k\right)$, and describes the arithmetic functions that are fixed point counting functions of permutations.

Let $G$ be a finite permutation group on $Ω$. An ordered sequence $(ω_1,\ldots,ω_\ell)$ of elements of $Ω$ is an irredundant base for $G$ if the pointwise stabilizer is trivial and no point is fixed by the stabilizer of its predecessors. If all irredundant bases of $G$ have the same cardinality, $G$ is said to be an IBIS group.
Lucchini, Morigi and Moscatiello have proved a theorem reducing the problem of classifying finite primitive IBIS groups $G$ to the case that the socle of $G$ is either abelian or non-abelian simple.
In this paper, we classify the finite primitive IBIS groups having socle an alternating group. Moreover, we propose a conjecture aiming to give a classification of all almost simple primitive IBIS groups.
Minimal prime ages, words and permutation graphs

This paper is a contribution to the study of hereditary classes of finite graphs. We classify these classes according to the number of prime structures they contain. We consider such classes that are \emph{minimal prime}: classes that contain infinitely many primes but every proper hereditary subclass contains only finitely many primes. We give a complete description of such classes. In fact, each one of these classes is a well-quasi-ordered (w.q.o) age and there are uncountably many of them. Eleven of these ages are almost multichainable; they remain w.q.o when labels in a w.q.o are added, hence have finitely many bounds. Five ages among them are exhaustible. Among the remaining ones, only countably many remain w.q.o when one label is added, and these have finitely many bounds (except for the age of the infinite path and its complement). The others have infinitely many bounds.
Except for six examples, members of these ages we characterize are permutation graphs. In fact, every age which is not among the eleven ones is the age of a graph associated to a uniformly recurrent word on the integers. A description of minimal prime classes of posets and bichains is also provided.
Our results support the conjecture that if a hereditary class of finite graphs does not remain w.q.o when adding labels from a w.q.o set to these graphs, then it is not w.q.o if we add just two constants to each of these graphs
Our description of minimal prime classes uses a description of minimal prime graphs \cite{pouzet-zaguia2009} and previous work by Sobrani \cite{sobranithesis, sobranietat} and the authors \cite{oudrar, pouzettr} on properties of uniformly recurrent words and the associated graphs. The completeness of our description is based on classification results of Chudnovsky, Kim, Oum and Seymour \cite{chudnovsky} and Malliaris and Terry \cite {malliaris}.

Let $S_{\rm lcm}(n)$ denote the set of permutations $π$ of $[n]=\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ such that ${\rm lcm}[j,π(j)]\le n$ for each $j\in[n]$. Further, let $S_{\rm div}(n)$ denote the number of permutations $π$ of $[n]$ such that $j\midπ(j)$ or $π(j)\mid j$ for each $j\in[n]$. Clearly $S_{\rm div}(n)\subset S_{\rm lcm}(n)$. We get upper and lower bounds for the counts of these sets, showing they grow geometrically. We also prove a conjecture from a recent paper on the number of "anti-coprime" permutations of $[n]$, meaning that each $\gcd(j,π(j))>1$ except when $j=1$.

In this paper, we classify $(q,q)$-biprojective almost perfect nonlinear (APN) functions over $\mathbb{LL} \times \mathbb{LL}$ under the natural left and right action of $\mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{LL})$ where $\mathbb{LL}$ is a finite field of characteristic $2$. This shows in particular that the only quadratic APN functions (up to CCZ-equivalence) over $\mathbb{LL} \times \mathbb{LL}$ that satisfy the so-called subfield property are the Gold functions and the function $κ: \mathbb{F}_{64} \to \mathbb{F}_{64}$ which is the only known APN function that is equivalent to a permutation over $\mathbb{LL} \times \mathbb{LL}$ up to CCZ-equivalence. The $κ$-function was introduced in (Browning, Dillon, McQuistan, and Wolfe, 2010). Deciding whether there exist other quadratic APN functions (possibly CCZ-equivalent to permutations) that satisfy subfield property or equivalently, generalizing $κ$ to higher dimensions was an open problem listed for instance in (Carlet, 2015) as one of the interesting open problems on cryptographic functions.
A Multiset Version of Even-Odd Permutations Identity
In this paper, we give a new bijective proof of a multiset analogue of even-odd permutations identity. This multiset version is equivalent to the original coin arrangements lemma which is a key combinatorial lemma in the Sherman's Proof of a conjecture of Feynman about an identity on paths in planar graphs related to combinatorial solution of two dimensional Ising model in statistical physics.
An update on Haiman's conjectures

We revisit Haiman's conjecture on the relations between characters of Kazdhan-Lusztig basis elements of the Hecke algebra over the symmetric group. The conjecture asserts that, for purposes of character evaluation, any Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element is reducible to a sum of the simplest possible ones (those associated to so-called codominant permutations). When the basis element is associated to a smooth permutation, we are able to give a geometric proof of this conjecture. On the other hand, if the permutation is singular, we provide a counterexample.
A geometric approach to characters of Hecke algebras

To any element of a connected, simply connected, semisimple complex algebraic group G and a choice of an element of the corresponding Weyl group there is an associated Lusztig variety. When the element of G is regular semisimple, the corresponding variety carries an action of the Weyl group on its (equivariant) intersection cohomology. From this action, we recover the induced characters of an element of the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of the corresponding Hecke algebra. In type A, we prove a more precise statement: that the Frobenius character of this action is precisely the symmetric function given by the characters of a Kazhdan-Lusztig basis element. The main idea is to find celular decompositions of desingularizations of these varieties and apply the Brosnan-Chow palindromicity criterion for determining when the local invariant cycle map is an isomorphism.
This recovers some results of Lusztig about character sheaves and gives a generalization of the Brosnan-Chow solution to the Sharesian-Wachs conjecture to non-codominant permutations, where singularities are involved. We also review the connections between Immanants, Hecke algebras, and Chromatic quasisymmetric functions of indifference graphs.
Giant Components in Random Temporal Graphs
A temporal graph is a graph whose edges appear only at certain points in time. Recently, the second and the last three authors proposed a natural temporal analog of the Erdős-Rényi random graph model. The proposed model is obtained by randomly permuting the edges of an Erdős-Rényi random graph and interpreting this permutation as an ordering of presence times. It was shown that the connectivity threshold in the Erdős-Rényi model fans out into multiple phase transitions for several distinct notions of reachability in the temporal setting.
In the present paper, we identify a sharp threshold for the emergence of a giant temporally connected component. We show that at $p = \log n/n$ the size of the largest temporally connected component increases from $o(n)$ to~$n-o(n)$. This threshold holds for both open and closed connected components, i.e. components that allow, respectively forbid, their connecting paths to use external nodes.
On the Largest Product-free Subsets of the Alternating Groups

A subset $A$ of a group $G$ is called product-free if there is no solution to $a=bc$ with $a,b,c$ all in $A$. It is easy to see that the largest product-free subset of the symmetric group $S_n$ is obtained by taking the set of all odd permutations, i.e. $S_n \setminus A_n$, where $A_n$ is the alternating group. By contrast, it is a long-standing open problem to find the largest product-free subset of $A_n$. We solve this problem for large $n$, showing that the maximum size is achieved by the previously conjectured extremal examples, namely families of the form $\{π~|~π(x)\in I, π(I)\cap I=\emptyset\}$ and their inverses. Moreover, we show that the maximum size is only achieved by these extremal examples, and we have stability: any product-free subset of $A_n$ of nearly maximum size is structurally close to an extremal example. Our proof uses a combination of tools from Combinatorics and Non-abelian Fourier Analysis, including a crucial new ingredient exploiting some recent theory developed by Filmus, Kindler, Liftshitz and Minzer for global hypercontractivity on the symmetric group.
q-Stirling numbers in type B
Stirling numbers, which count partitions of a set and permutations in the symmetric group, have found extensive application in combinatorics, geometry, and algebra. We study analogues and q-analogues of these numbers corresponding to the Coxeter group of type B. In particular, we show how they are related to complete homogeneous and elementary symmetric polynomials; demonstrate how they q-count signed partitions and permutations; compute their ordinary, exponential, and q-exponential generating functions; and prove various identities about them. Ordered analogues of the q-Stirling numbers of the second kind have recently appeared in conjectures of Zabrocki and of Swanson--Wallach concerning the Hilbert series of certain super coinvariant algebras. We provide conjectural bases for these algebras and show that they have the correct Hilbert series.
Third order moments of complex Wigner matrices
We compute the third order moments of a complex Wigner matrix. We provide a formula for the third order moments $α_{m_1,m_2,m_3}$ in terms of quotient graphs $T_{m_1,m_2,m_3}^π$ where $π$ is the Kreweras complement of a non-crossing pairing on the annulus. We prove that these graphs can be counted using the set of partitioned permutations, this permits us to write the third order moments in terms of the high order free cumulants which have a simple expression.

The Hamilton compression of highly symmetric graphs

We say that a Hamilton cycle $C=(x_1,\ldots,x_n)$ in a graph $G$ is $k$-symmetric, if the mapping $x_i\mapsto x_{i+n/k}$ for all $i=1,\ldots,n$, where indices are considered modulo $n$, is an automorphism of $G$. In other words, if we lay out the vertices $x_1,\ldots,x_n$ equidistantly on a circle and draw the edges of $G$ as straight lines, then the drawing of $G$ has $k$-fold rotational symmetry, i.e., all information about the graph is compressed into a $360^\circ/k$ wedge of the drawing. The maximum $k$ for which there exists a $k$-symmetric Hamilton cycle in $G$ is referred to as the Hamilton compression of $G$. We investigate the Hamilton compression of four different families of vertex-transitive graphs, namely hypercubes, Johnson graphs, permutahedra and Cayley graphs of abelian groups. In several cases we determine their Hamilton compression exactly, and in other cases we provide close lower and upper bounds. The constructed cycles have a much higher compression than several classical Gray codes known from the literature. Our constructions also yield Gray codes for bitstrings, combinations and permutations that have few tracks and/or that are balanced.
