Gotzmann Monomials In Four Variables

It is a widely open problem to determine which monomials in the n-variable polynomial ring $K[x_1,...,x_n]$ over a field $K$ have the Gotzmann property, i.e. induce a Borel-stable Gotzmann monomial ideal. Since 2007, only the case $n \le 3$ was known. Here we solve the problem for the case $n = 4$. The solution involves a surprisingly intricate characterization.
Minimal resolutions of monomial ideals
An explicit combinatorial minimal free resolution of an arbitrary monomial ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field of characteristic $0$ is defined canonically, without any choices, using higher-dimensional generalizations of combined spanning trees for cycles and cocycles ("hedges") in the upper Koszul simplicial complexes of $I$ at lattice points in $\mathbb{Z}^n$. The differentials in these "sylvan resolutions" are expressed as matrices whose entries are sums over lattice paths of weights determined combinatorially by sequences of hedges ("hedgerows") along each lattice path. This combinatorics enters via an explicit matroidal expression for the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverses of the differentials in any CW complex as weighted averages of splittings defined by hedges. This "Hedge Formula" also yields a projection formula from CW chains to boundaries. The translation from Moore-Penrose combinatorics to free resolutions relies on Wall complexes, which construct minimal free resolutions of graded ideals from vertical splittings of Koszul bicomplexes. The algebra of Wall complexes applied to individual hedgerows yields explicit but noncanonical combinatorial minimal free resolutions of arbitrary monomial ideals in any characteristic.
A combinatorial model for the decomposition of multivariate polynomial rings as $S_n$-modules
We consider the symmetric group $S_n$-module of the polynomial ring with $m$ sets of $n$ commuting variables and $m'$ sets of $n$ anti-commuting variables and show that the multiplicity of an irreducible indexed by the partition $λ$ (a partition of $n$) is the number of multiset tableaux of shape $λ$ satisfying certain column and row strict conditions. We also present a finite generating set for the ring of $S_n$ invariant polynomials of this ring.
On the Stanley depth of powers of monomial ideals
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\mathbb{K}$. In 1982, R. Stanley associated a combinatorial invariant to any finitely generated $\mathbb{Z}^n$-graded $S$-module which is now called Stanley depth. Stanley conjectured that this invariant is an upper bound for the depth of module. Stanley's conjecture has been disproved by Duval et al. \cite{abcj}, and the counterexample is a quotient of squarefree monomial ideals. On the other hand, there are evidences showing that Stanley's inequality can be true for high powers of monomial ideals. In this survey article, we collect the recent results in this direction. More precisely, we investigate the Stanley depth of powers, integral closure of powers and symbolic powers of monomial ideals.
Flagged $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions

We introduce the theory of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions, depending on a poset $\mathcal{P}$ and a map $ρ$ from $\mathcal{P}$ to positive integers. The generating function $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{P},ρ}$ of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions is a polynomial that, when the images of $ρ$ tend to infinity, tends to Stanley's generating function $F_{\mathcal{P}}$ of $\mathcal{P}$-partitions. Analogous to Stanley's fundamental theorem for $\mathcal{P}$-partitions, we show that the set of $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions decomposes as a disjoint union of $(\mathcal{L},ρ)$-partitions where $\mathcal{L}$ runs over the set of linear extensions of $\mathcal{P}$. In this more general context, the set of all $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{L},ρ}$ for linear orders $\mathcal{L}$ over determines a basis of polynomials. We thus introduce the notion of flagged $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions, and we prove that the set of all $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{L},ρ}$ for flagged $(\mathcal{L},ρ)$-partitions for linear orders $\mathcal{L}$ is precisely the fundamental slide basis of the polynomial ring, introduced by the first author and Searles. Our main theorem shows that any generating function $\mathfrak{F}_{\mathcal{P},ρ}$ of flagged $(\mathcal{P},ρ)$-partitions is a positive integer linear combination of slide polynomials. As applications, we give a new proof of positivity of the slide product and, motivating our nomenclature, we also prove flagged Schur functions are slide positive.
Induced matching numbers of finite graphs and edge ideals
Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on the vertex set $V(G) = \{x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$ and $I(G) \subset K[V(G)]$ its edge ideal, where $K[V(G)]$ is the polynomial ring in $x_1, \ldots, x_n$ over a field $K$ with each ${\rm deg} x_i = 1$ and where $I(G)$ is generated by those squarefree quadratic monomials $x_ix_j$ for which $\{x_i, x_j\}$ is an edge of $G$. In the present paper, given integers $1 \leq a \leq r$ and $s \geq 1$, the existence of a finite connected simple graph $G = G(a, r, d)$ with ${\rm im}(G) = a$, ${\rm reg}(R/I(G)) = r$ and ${\rm deg} h_{K[V(G)]/I(G)} (λ) = s$, where ${\rm im}(G)$ is the induced matching number of $G$ and where $h_{K[V(G)]/I(G)} (λ)$ is the $h$-polynomial of $K[V(G)]/I(G)$.

We construct new "standard modules" for the representations of general linear groups over a local non-archimedean field. The construction uses a modified Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence for Zelevinsky's multisegments.
Typically, the new class categorifies the basis of Doubilet, Rota, and Stein for matrix polynomial rings, indexed by bitableaux. Hence, our main result provides a link between the dual canonical basis (coming from quantum groups) and the DRS basis.

Let $R=K[x_1,...,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ and let $J$ be a matroidal ideal of degree $d$ in $R$. In this paper, we study the class of sequentially Cohen-Macaulay matroidal ideals. In particular, all sequentially Cohen-Macaulay matroidal ideals of degree $2$ are classified. Furthermore, we give a classification of sequentially Cohen-Macaulay matroidal ideals of degree $d\geq 3$ in some special cases.
On monomial Golod ideals
We study ideal-theoretic conditions for a monomial ideal to be Golod. For ideals in a polynomial ring in three variables, our criteria give a complete characterization. Over such rings, we show that the product of two monomial ideals is Golod.

Using Reiner's definition of Stirling numbers of the second kind in types $B$ and $D$, we generalize two well-known identities concerning the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind. The first identity relates them with Eulerian numbers and the second identity interprets them as entries in a transition matrix between the elements of two standard bases of the polynomial ring $R[x]$. Finally, we generalize these identities to the group of colored permutations $G_{m,n}$.

Motivated by notions from coding theory, we study the generalized minimum distance (GMD) function $δ_I(d,r)$ of a graded ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring over an arbitrary field using commutative algebraic methods. It is shown that $δ_I$ is non-decreasing as a function of $r$ and non-increasing as a function of $d$. For vanishing ideals over finite fields, we show that $δ_I$ is strictly decreasing as a function of $d$ until it stabilizes. We also study algebraic invariants of Geramita ideals. Those ideals are graded, unmixed, $1$-dimensional and their associated primes are generated by linear forms. We also examine GMD functions of complete intersections and show some special cases of two conjectures of Tohăneanu--Van Tuyl and Eisenbud-Green-Harris.
Stability of depth and Stanley depth of symbolic powers of squarefree monomial ideals
Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\mathbb{K}$. Assume that $I\subset S$ is a squarefree monomial ideal. For every integer $k\geq 1$, we denote the $k$-th symbolic power of $I$ by $I^{(k)}$. Recently, Montaño and Núñez-Betancourt \cite{mn} proved that for every pair of integers $m, k\geq 1$,$${\rm depth}(S/I^{(m)})\leq {\rm depth}(S/I^{(\lceil\frac{m}{k}\rceil)}).$$We provide an alternative proof for this inequality. Moreover, we reprove the known results that the sequence $\{{\rm depth}(S/I^{(k)})\}_{k=1}^{\infty}$ is convergent and$$\min_k{\rm depth}(S/I^{(k)})=\lim_{k\rightarrow \infty}{\rm depth}(S/I^{(k)})=n-\ell_s(I),$$where $\ell_s(I)$ denotes the symbolic analytic spread of $I$. We also determine an upper bound for the index of depth stability of symbolic powers of $I$. Next, we consider the Stanley depth of symbolic powers and prove that the sequences $\{{\rm sdepth}(S/I^{(k)})\}_{k=1}^{\infty}$ and $\{{\rm sdepth}(I^{(k)})\}_{k=1}^{\infty}$ are convergent and the limit of each sequence is equal to its minimum. Furthermore, we determine an upper bound for the indices of sdepth stability of symbolic powers.
Composition Tableaux basis for Schur functors and the Plücker algebra
We show that combinatorial objects called row-strict composition tableaux, introduced by Mason and Remmel in 2014 and closely related to the quasi-symmetric Schur functions of Haglund-Luoto-Mason-van Willigenburg, form a basis for Schur functors of finite free modules over arbitrary commutative rings. When the ring is the complex numbers, this produces a new basis for the irreducible polynomial representations of $\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$. Moreover, in this case it also produces new basis for the Plücker algebra, a subalgebra of the polynomial ring over $\mathbb{C}$ in $n^2$ variables, which is of independent combinatorial and geometric interests. As an aside we also show that these results hold for other combinatorial objects called reverse row strict tableau.

We prove upper bounds for the graded Betti numbers of Stanley-Reisner rings of balanced simplicial complexes. Along the way we show bounds for Cohen-Macaulay graded rings $S/I$, where $S$ is a polynomial ring and $I\subseteq S$ is an homogeneous ideal containing a certain number of generators in degree 2, including the squares of the variables. Using similar techniques we provide upper bounds for the number of linear syzygies for Stanley-Reisner of balanced normal pseudomanifolds. Moreover, we compute explicitly the graded Betti numbers of cross-polytopal stacked spheres, and show that they only depend on the dimension and the number of vertices, rather than also the combinatorial type.

The discrete LS algebra over a totally ordered set is the homogeneous coordinate ring of an irreducible projective (normal) toric variety. We prove that this algebra is the ring of invariants of a finite abelian group containing no pseudo-reflection acting on a polynomial ring. This is used to study the Gorenstein property for LS algebras. Further we show that any LS algebra is Koszul.
The Lecture Hall Cone as a toric deformation
The Lecture Hall cone is a simplicial cone whose lattice points naturally correspond to Lecture Hall partitions. The celebrated Lecture Hall Theorem of Bousquet-Mélou and Eriksson states that a particular specialization of its multivariate Ehrhart series factors in a very nice and unexpected way. Over the years, several proofs of this result have been found, but it is still not considered to be well-understood from a geometric perspective. In this note we propose two conjectures which aim at clarifying this result. Our main conjecture is that the Ehrhart ring of the Lecture Hall cone is actually an initial subalgebra $A_n$ of a certain subalgebra of a polynomial ring, which is itself isomorphic to a polynomial ring. As passing to initial subalgebras does not affect the Hilbert function, this explains the observed factorization. We give a recursive definition of certain Laurent polynomials, which generate the algebra $A_n$. Our second conjecture is that these Laurent polynomials are in fact polynomials. We computationally verified that both conjectures hold for Lecture Hall partitions of length at most 12.

Let $G$ be a finite simple graph on the vertex set $[n] = \{ 1, \ldots, n \}$ and $K[X, Y] = K[x_1, \ldots, x_n, y_1, \ldots, y_n]$ the polynomial ring in $2n$ variables over a field $K$ with each $\mathrm{deg} x_i = \mathrm{deg} y_j = 1$. The binomial edge ideal of $G$ is the binomial ideal $J_G \subset K[X, Y]$ which is generated by those binomials $x_iy_j - x_jy_i$ for which $\{i, j\}$ is an edge of $G$. The Hilbert series $H_{K[X, Y]/J_G}(λ)$ of $K[X, Y]/J_G$ is of the form $H_{K[X, Y]/J_G}(λ) = h_{K[X, Y]/J_G}(λ)/(1 - λ)^d$, where $d = \mathrm{dim} K[X, Y]/J_G$ and where $h_{K[X, Y]/J_G}(λ) = h_0 + h_1λ+ h_2λ^2 + \cdots + h_sλ^s$ with each $h_i \in \mathbb{Z}$ and with $h_s \neq 0$ is the $h$-polynomial of $K[X, Y]/J_G$. It is known that, when $K[X, Y]/J_G$ is Cohen-Macaulay, one has $\mathrm{reg}(K[X, Y]/J_G) = \mathrm{deg} h_{K[X, Y]/J_G}(λ)$, where $ \mathrm{reg}(K[X, Y]/J_G)$ is the (Castelnuovo-Mumford) regularity of $K[X, Y]/J_G$. In the present paper, given arbitrary integers $r$ and $s$ with $2 \leq r \leq s$, a finite simple graph $G$ for which $\mathrm{reg}(K[X, Y]/J_G) = r$ and $\mathrm{deg} h_{K[X, Y]/J_G}(λ) = s$ will be constructed.

Let $\mathbb{K}$ be a field and $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over $\mathbb{K}$. Assume that $G$ is a graph with edge ideal $I(G)$. We prove that the modules $S/\overline{I(G)^k}$ and $\overline{I(G)^k}/\overline{I(G)^{k+1}}$ satisfy Stanley's inequality for every integer $k\gg 0$. If $G$ is a non-bipartite graph, we show that the ideals $\overline{I(G)^k}$ satisfy Stanley's inequality for all $k\gg 0$. For every connected bipartite graph $G$ (with at least one edge), we prove that ${\rm sdepth}(I(G)^k)\geq 2$, for any positive integer $k\leq {\rm girth}(G)/2+1$. This result partially answers a question asked in [20]. For any proper monomial ideal $I$ of $S$, it is shown that the sequence $\{{\rm depth}(\overline{I^k}/\overline{I^{k+1}})\}_{k=0}^{\infty}$ is convergent and $\lim_{k\rightarrow\infty}{\rm depth}(\overline{I^k}/\overline{I^{k+1}})=n-\ell(I)$, where $\ell(I)$ denotes the analytic spread of $I$. Furthermore, it is proved that for any monomial ideal $I$, there exists an integer $s$ such that $${\rm depth} (S/I^{sm}) \leq {\rm depth} (S/\overline{I}),$$for every integer $m\geq 1$. We also determine a value $s$ for which the above inequality holds. If $I$ is an integrally closed ideal, we show that ${\rm depth}(S/I^m)\leq {\rm depth}(S/I)$, for every integer $m\geq 1$. As a consequence, we obtain that for any integrally closed monomial ideal $I$ and any integer $m\geq 1$, we have ${\rm Ass}(S/I)\subseteq {\rm Ass}(S/I^m)$. \end{abstract}
Decomposable clutters and a generalization of Simon's conjectutre

Each (equigenerated) squarefree monomial ideal in the polynomial ring $S=\mathbb{K}[x_1, \ldots, x_n]$ represents a family of subsets of $[n]$, called a (uniform) clutter. In this paper, we introduce a class of uniform clutters, called decomposable clutters, whose associated ideal has linear quotients and hence linear resolution over all fields. We show that chordality of these clutters guarantees the correctness of a conjecture raised by R. S. Simon on extendable shellability of $d$-skeletons of a simplex $\langle [n] \rangle$, for all $d$. We then prove this conjecture for $d \geq n-3$.
