Bounded powers of edge ideals: Gorenstein toric rings
Let $S=K[x_1, \ldots,x_n]$ denote the polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field $K$ and $I \subset S$ a monomial ideal. Given a vector $\mathfrak{c}\in\mathbb{N}^n$, the ideal $I_{\mathfrak{c}}$ is the ideal generated by those monomials belonging to $I$ whose exponent vectors are componentwise bounded above by $\mathfrak{c}$. Let $δ_{\mathfrak{c}}(I)$ be the largest integer $q$ for which $(I^q)_{\mathfrak{c}}\neq 0$. For a finite graph $G$, its edge ideal is denoted by $I(G)$. Let $\mathcal{B}(\mathfrak{c},G)$ be the toric ring which is generated by the monomials belonging to the minimal system of monomial generators of $(I(G)^{δ_{\mathfrak{c}}(I)})_{\mathfrak{c}}$. In a previous work, the authors proved that $(I(G)^{δ_{\mathfrak{c}}(I)})_{\mathfrak{c}}$ is a polymatroidal ideal. It follows that $\mathcal{B}(\mathfrak{c},G)$ is a normal Cohen--Macaulay domain. In this paper, we study the Gorenstein property of $\mathcal{B}(\mathfrak{c},G)$.

Componentwise Linear Ideals From Sums
Let $I,J$ be componentwise linear ideals in a polynomial ring $S$. We study necessary and sufficient conditions for $I+J$ to be componentwise linear. We provide a complete characterization when $\dim S=2$. As a consequence, any componentwise linear monomial ideal in $k[x,y]$ has linear quotients using generators in non-decreasing degrees. In any dimension, we show that under mild compatibility conditions, one can build a componentwise linear ideal from a given collection of componentwise linear monomial ideals using only sum and product with square-free monomials. We provide numerous examples to demonstrate the optimality of our results.

Zigzags, contingency tables, and quotient rings
Let $\mathbf{x}_{k \times p}$ be a $k \times p$ matrix of variables and let $\mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{k \times p}]$ be the polynomial ring in these variables. Given two weak compositions $α,β\models_0 n$ of lengths $\ell(α) = k$ and $\ell(β) = p$, we study the ideal $I_{α,β} \subseteq \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{k \times \ell}]$ generated by row sums, column sums, monomials in row $i$ of degree $> α_i$, and monomials in column $j$ of degree $> β_j$. We prove results connecting algebraic properties of the quotient ring $R_{α,β} := \mathbb{F}[\mathbf{x}_{k \times \ell}]/I_{α,β}$ with the set $C_{α,β}$ of $α,β$-contingency tables. The standard monomial basis of $R_{α,β}$ with respect to a diagonal term order is encoded by the matrix-ball avatar of the RSK correspondence. We describe the Hilbert series of $R_{α,β}$ in terms of a zigzag statistic on contingency tables. The ring $R_{α,β}$ carries a graded action of the product $\mathrm{Stab}(α) \times \mathrm{Stab}(β)$ of symmetry groups of the sequences $α= (α_1,\dots,α_k)$ and $β= (β_1,\dots,β_p)$; we describe how to calculate the isomorphism type of this graded action. Our analysis regards the set $C_{α,β}$ as a locus in the affine space $\mathrm{Mat}_{k \times p}(\mathbb{F})$ and applies orbit harmonics to this locus.

Regularity of $3$-Path Ideals of Trees and Unicyclic Graphs
Published in Bull. Malays. Math. Sci. Soc., 47, article number 4, pp.10, 2024 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph and $I_3(G)$ be its $3$-path ideal in the corresponding polynomial ring $R$. In this article, we prove that for an arbitrary graph $G$, $reg(R/I_3(G))$ is bounded below by $2ν_3(G)$, where $ν_3(G)$ denotes the $3$-path induced matching number of $G$. We give a class of graphs, namely, trees for which the lower bound is attained. Also, for a unicyclic graph $G$, we show that $reg(R/I_3(G))\leq 2ν_3(G)+2$ and provide an example that shows that the given upper bound is sharp.

Square-free powers of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial forests
Let $I(Δ)^{[k]}$ denote the $k^{\text{th}}$ square-free power of the facet ideal of a simplicial complex $Δ$ in a polynomial ring $R$. Square-free powers are intimately related to the `Matching Theory' and `Ordinary Powers'. In this article, we show that if $Δ$ is a Cohen-Macaulay simplicial forest, then $R/I(Δ)^{[k]}$ is Cohen-Macaulay for all $k\ge 1$. This result is quite interesting since all ordinary powers of a graded radical ideal can never be Cohen-Macaulay unless it is a complete intersection. To prove the result, we introduce a new combinatorial notion called special leaf, and using this, we provide an explicit combinatorial formula of $\mathrm{depth}(R/I(Δ)^{[k]})$ for all $k\ge 1$, where $Δ$ is a Cohen-Macaulay simplicial forest. As an application, we show that the normalized depth function of a Cohen-Macaulay simplicial forest is nonincreasing.
Quotients of skew polynomial rings: new constructions of division algebras and MRD codes
We achieve new results on skew polynomial rings and their quotients, including the first explicit example of a skew polynomial ring where the ratio of the degree of a skew polynomial to the degree of its bound is not extremal. These methods lead to the construction of new (not necessarily associative) division algebras and maximum rank distance (MRD) codes over both finite and infinite division rings. In particular, we construct new non-associative division algebras whose right nucleus is a central simple algebra having degree greater than 1. Over finite fields, we obtain new semifields and MRD codes for infinitely many choices of parameters. These families extend and contain many of the best previously known constructions.

DG-Sensitive Pruning & a Complete Classification of DG Trees and Cycles
Given a squarefree monomial ideal $I$ of a polynomial ring $Q$, we show that if the minimal free resolution $\mathbb{F}$ of $Q/I$ admits the structure of a differential graded (dg) algebra, then so does any "pruning" of $\mathbb{F}$. As an application, we show that if $Q/\mathcal{F}(Δ)$, the quotient of the ambient polynomial ring by the facet ideal $\mathcal{F}(Δ)$ of a simplicial complex $Δ$, is minimally resolved by a dg algebra, then so is the quotient by the facet ideal of each facet-induced subcomplex of $Δ$ (over the smaller polynomial ring). Along with techniques from discrete Morse theory and homological algebra, this allows us to give complete classifications of the trees and cycles $G$ with $Q/I_G$ minimally resolved by a dg algebra in terms of the diameter of $G$, where $I_G$ is the edge ideal of $G$.

Graph colouring and Steenrod's problem for Stanley-Reisner rings
It is a classical problem in algebraic topology asked by Steenrod which graded rings occur as the cohomology ring of a space. In this paper, we define an algebraic version of the graph colouring, span colouring, and observe the relation between span colourings and Steenrod's problem for graded Stanley-Reisner rings, in other words polynomial rings divided by an ideal generated by square-free monic monomials.
Khovanskii bases of subalgebras arising from finite distributive lattices
The notion of Khovanskii bases was introduced by Kaveh and Manon. It is a generalization of the notion of SAGBI bases for a subalgebra of polynomials. The notion of SAGBI bases was introduced by Robbiano and Sweedler as an analogue of Gröbner bases in the context of subalgebras. A Hibi ideal is an ideal of a polynomial ring that arises from a distributive lattice. For the development of an analogy of the theory of Hibi ideals and Gröbner bases within the framework of subalgebras, in this paper, we investigate when the set of the polynomials associated with a distributive lattice forms a Khovanskii basis of the subalgebras it generates. We characterize such distributive lattices and their underlying posets. In particular, generalized snake posets and $\{(2+2),(1+1+1)\}$-free posets appear as the characterization.

The homological shift algebra of a monomial ideal
Let $S=K[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ be the polynomial ring over a field $K$, and let $I\subset S$ be a monomial ideal. In this paper, we introduce the $i$th \textit{homological shift algebras} $\text{HS}_i(\mathcal{R}(I))=\bigoplus_{k\ge1}\text{HS}_i(I^k)$ of $I$. If $I$ has linear powers, these algebras have the structure of a finitely generated bigraded module over the Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I)$ of $I$. Hence, many invariants of $\text{HS}_i(I^k)$, such as depth, associated primes, regularity, and the $\text{v}$-number, exhibit well behaved asymptotic behavior. We determine several families of monomial ideals $I$ for which $\text{HS}_i(I^k)$ has linear resolution for all $k\gg0$. Finally, we show that $\text{HS}_i(I^k)$ is Golod for all monomial ideals $I\subset S$ with linear powers and all $k\gg0$.

Ideal transition systems
We study an inductive method of computing initial ideals and Gröbner bases for families of ideals in a polynomial ring. This method starts from a given set of pairs $(I,J)$ where $I$ is any ideal and $J$ is a monomial ideal contained in the initial ideal of $I$. These containments become a system of equalities if one can establish a particular transition recurrence among the chosen ideals. We describe explicit constructions of such systems in two motivating cases -- namely, for the ideals of matrix Schubert varieties and their skew-symmetric analogues. Despite many formal similarities with these examples, for the symmetric versions of matrix Schubert varieties, it is an open problem to construct the same kind of transition system. We present several conjectures that would follow from such a construction, while also discussing the special obstructions arising in the symmetric case.

Deterministic Algorithms to Solve the $(n,k)$-Complete Hidden Subset Sum Problem
The Hidden Subset Sum Problem (HSSP) is a significant NP-complete problem in number theory and combinatorics, with applications in cryptography and AI privacy. For the $(n,k)$-complete HSSP, where a target multiset must be recovered from its all $k$-subset sums, existing algorithms face limitations due to high complexity or intractability. This paper proposes two deterministic algorithms: a brute-force approach, and a novel method leveraging symmetric polynomials and Vieta's formulas with $O\left(\sum_{u=1}^n p(u,\leq k)^3+\binom{n}{k}n\right)$ complexity, where $ p(u,\leq k)$ counts the number of partitions of a positive integer $u$ into at most $k$ parts. The latter constructs an $n$-th degree polynomial via Vieta's formulas, whose roots correspond to the hidden multiset elements. Additionally, the discussion about the homogeneous symmetric polynomial rings is of independent interest.

On a combinatorial puzzle arising from the theory of Lascoux polynomials
Lascoux polynomials are a class of nonhomogeneous polynomials which form a basis of the full polynomial ring. Recently, Pan and Yu showed that Lascoux polynomials can be defined as generating polynomials for certain collections of diagrams consisting of unit cells arranged in the first quadrant generated from an associated ``key diagram" by applying sequences of ``$K$-Kohnert moves". Within diagrams generated in this manner, certain cells are designated as special and referred to as ``ghost cells". Given a fixed Lascoux polynomial, Pan and Yu established a combinatorial algorithm in terms of ``snow diagrams" for computing the maximum number of ghost cells occurring in a diagram defining a monomial of the given polynomial; having this value allows for one to determine the total degree of the given Lascoux polynomial. In this paper, we study the combinatorial puzzle which arises when one replaces key diagrams by arbitrary diagrams in the definition of Lascoux polynomials. Specifically, given an arbitrary diagram, we consider the question of determining the maximum number of ghost cells contained within a diagram among those formed from our given initial one by applying sequences of $K$-Kohnert moves. In this regard, we establish means of computing the aforementioned max ghost cell value for various families of diagrams as well as for diagrams in general when one takes a greedy approach.

Intersecting families of polynomials over finite fields
This paper establishes an analog of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem to polynomial rings over finite fields, affirmatively answering a conjecture of C. Tompkins. A $k$-uniform family of subsets of a set of finite size $n$ is $l$-intersecting if any two subsets in the family intersect in at least $l$ elements. The study of such intersecting families is a core subject of extremal set theory, tracing its roots to the seminal 1961 Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, which establishes a sharp upper bound on the size of these families. As an analog of the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem, we determine the largest possible size of a family of monic polynomials, each of degree $n$, over a finite field $F_q$, where every pair of polynomials in the family shares a common factor of degree at least $l$. We establish that the upper bound for this size is $q^{n-l}$ and characterize all extremal families that achieve this maximum size. Further extending our study to triple-intersecting families, where every triplet of polynomials shares a common factor of degree at least $l$, we prove that only trivial families achieve the corresponding upper bound. Moreover, by relaxing the conditions to include polynomials of degree at most $n$, we affirm that only trivial families achieve the corresponding upper bound.

On the gcd graphs over polynomial rings
Gcd-graphs over the ring of integers modulo $n$ are a natural generalization of unitary Cayley graphs. The study of these graphs has foundations in various mathematical fields, including number theory, ring theory, and representation theory. Using the theory of Ramanujan sums, it is known that these gcd-graphs have integral spectra; i.e., all their eigenvalues are integers. In this work, inspired by the analogy between number fields and function fields, we define and study gcd-graphs over polynomial rings with coefficients in finite fields. We establish some fundamental properties of these graphs, emphasizing their analogy to their counterparts over $\mathbb{Z}.$

On Modular Invariants of Truncated Polynomial Rings in low ranks
We verify the conjectures due to Lewis, Reiner and Stanton about the Hilbert series of the invariant ring of the truncated polynomial ring for all parabolic subgroups up to rank $3$. This is done by constructing an explicit set of generators for each invariant ring in question. We also propose a conjecture concerning the action of the Steenrod algebra and the Dickson algebra on a certain naturally occurring filtration of the invariant ring under the general linear group.

From total positivity to pure free resolutions
Using the Jacobi-Trudi identity as a base, we establish parallels between the theory of totally positive integer sequences and Koszul algebras. We then focus on the case of quadric hypersurface rings and use this parallel to construct new analogues of Schur modules. We investigate some of their Lie-theoretic properties (and in more detail in a followup article) and use them to construct pure free resolutions for quadric hypersurface rings which are completely analogous to the construction given by Eisenbud, Fløystad, and Weyman in the case of polynomial rings.

Wronskians form the inverse system of the arcs of a double point
The ideal of the arc scheme of a double point or, equivalently, the differential ideal generated by the ideal of a double point is a primary ideal in an infinite-dimensional polynomial ring supported at the origin. This ideal has a rich combinatorial structure connecting it to singularity theory, partition identities, representation theory, and differential algebra. Macaulay inverse system is a powerful tool for studying the structure of primary ideals which describes an ideal in terms of certain linear differential operators. In the present paper, we show that the inverse system of the ideal of the arc scheme of a double point is precisely a vector space spanned by all the Wronskians of the variables and their formal derivatives. We then apply this characterization to extend our recent result on Poincaré-type series for such ideals.
On Certain Bounds for Multiset Dimensions of Zero-Divisor Graphs Associated with Rings
This article investigates multiset dimensions in zero divisor graphs (ZD-graphs) associated with rings. Through rigorous analysis, we establish general bounds for the multiset dimension (Mdim) in ZD-graphs, exploring various commutative rings including the ring Z_n of integers modulo n, Gaussian integers and quotient polynomial rings. Additionally, we examine the behavior of Mdim under algebraic operations and discuss bounds in terms of diameter and maximum degree. This study enhances our understanding of algebraic structures and their graphical representations.
