A variation of the Morris constant term identity
Morris constant term identity is important due to its equivalence with the well-known Selberg integral. We find a variation of the Morris constant term, denoted $h_n(t)$, in the study of the Ehrhart polynomial $H_n(t)$ of the $n$-th Birkhoff polytope, which consists of all doubly stochastic matrices of order $n$. The constant term $h_n(t)$ corresponds to a particular constant term in the study of $H_n(t)$. We give a characterization of $h_n(t)$ as a polynomial of degree $(n-1)^2$ with additional nice properties involving the Morris constant term identity. We also construct a recursion of $h_n(t)$ using a similar technique for the proof of the Morris constant term identity by Baldoni-Silva and Vergne, and by Xin. This method is applicable to any integer $n\geq 3$. We have produced explicit formulas of $h_n(t)$ for $3 \le n \le 29$ without difficulty.

For a graph $G$ define the parameters $\ell(G)$ and $L(G)$ as the minimum and maximum value of $ν(G\backslash F)$, where $F$ is a maximum matching of $G$ and $ν(G)$ is the matching number of $G$. In this paper, we show that there is a small constant $c>0$, such that the following decision problem is NP-complete: given a graph $G$ and $k\leq \frac{|V|}{2}$, check whether there is a maximum matching $F$ in $G$, such that $|ν(G\backslash F)-k|\leq c\cdot |V|$. Note that when $c=1$, this problem is polynomial time solvable as we observe in the paper. Since in any graph $G$, we have $L(G)\leq 2\ell(G)$, any polynomial time algorithm constructing a maximum matching of a graph is a 2-approximation algorithm for $\ell(G)$ and $\frac{1}{2}$-approximation algorithm for $L(G)$. We complement these observations by presenting two inapproximability results for $\ell(G)$ and $L(G)$.
Multipath matroids, digraph colourings, and the Tutte polynomial
We characterise the digraphs for which the multipaths, that is disjoint unions of directed paths, yield a matroid. For such graphs, called MP-digraphs, we prove that the Tutte polynomial of the multipath matroid is related to counting certain digraph colourings. Finally, we prove that, for MP-forests, the decategorification of the multipath cohomology yields a specialisation of the Tutte polynomial.
A note on the alternating number of independent sets in a graph
The independence polynomial of a graph $G$ evaluated at $-1$, denoted here as $I(G;-1)$, has arisen in a variety of different areas of mathematics and theoretical physics as an object of interest. Engström used discrete Morse theory to prove that $\left|I(G;-1)\right|\leq 2^{φ(G)}$ where $φ(G)$ is the decycling number of $G$, i.e., the minimum number of vertices needed to be deleted from $G$ so that the remaining graph is acyclic. Here, we improve Engström's bound by showing $\left|I(G;-1)\right|\leq 2^{φ_3(G)}$ where $φ_3(G)$ is the minimum number of vertices needed to be deleted from $G$ so that the resulting graph contains no induced cycles whose length is divisible by $3$. We also note that this bound is not just sharp but that every value in the range given by the bound is attainable by some connected graph.
Avoiding secants of given size in finite projective planes
Let $q$ be a prime power and $k$ be a natural number. What are the possible cardinalities of point sets ${S}$ in a projective plane of order $q$, which do not intersect any line at exactly $k$ points? This problem and its variants have been investigated before, in relation with blocking sets, untouchable sets or sets of even type, among others. In this paper we show a series of results which point out the existence of all or almost all possible values $m\in [0, q^2+q+1]$ for $|S|=m$, provided that $k$ is not close to the extremal values $0$ or $q+1$. Moreover, using polynomial techniques we show the existence of a point set $S$ with the following property: for every prescribed list of numbers $t_1, \ldots t_{q^2+q+1}$, $|S\cap \ell_i|\neq t_i$ holds for the $i$th line $\ell_i$, $\forall i \in \{1, 2, \ldots, q^2+q+1\}$.
On the zero-free region for the chromatic polynomial of graphs with maximum degree $Δ$ and girth $g$
The purpose of the present paper is to provide, for all pairs of integers $(Δ,g)$ with $\D\ge 3$ and $g\ge 3$, a positive number $C(Δ, g)$ such that chromatic polynomial $P_G(q)$ of a graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ$ and finite girth $g$ is free of zero if $|q|\ge C(Δ, g)$. Our bounds enlarge the zero-free region in the complex plane of $P_G(q)$ in comparison to previous bounds. In particular, for small values of $\D$ our estimates yield a sensible improvement on the bounds recently obtained by Jenssen, Patel and Regts in \cite{JPR}, while they coincide with those of \cite{JPR} when $Δ\to \infty$.
Polynomials Counting Group Colorings in Graphs
Jaeger et al. in 1992 introduced group coloring as the dual concept to group connectivity in graphs. Let $A$ be an additive Abelian group, $ f: E(G)\to A$ and $D$ an orientation of a graph $G$. A vertex coloring $c:V(G)\to A$ is an $(A, f)$-coloring if $c(v)-c(u)\ne f(e)$ for each oriented edge $e=uv$ from $u$ to $v$ under $D$. Kochol recently introduced the assigning polynomial to count nowhere-zero chains in graphs--nonhomogeneous analogues of nowhere-zero flows in \cite{Kochol2022}, and later extended the approach to regular matroids in \cite{Kochol2024}. Motivated by Kochol's work, we define the $α$-compatible graph and the cycle-assigning polynomial $P(G, α; k)$ at $k$ in terms of $α$-compatible spanning subgraphs, where $α$ is an assigning of $G$ from its cycles to $\{0,1\}$. We prove that $P(G,α;k)$ evaluates the number of $(A,f)$-colorings of $G$ for any Abelian group $A$ of order $k$ and $f:E(G)\to A$ such that the assigning $α_{D,f}$ given by $f$ equals $α$. Such an assigning is admissible. Based on Kochol's work, we derive that $k^{-c(G)}P(G,α;k)$ is a polynomial enumerating $(A,f)$-tensions and counting specific nowhere-zero chains.
Furthermore, by extending Whitney's broken cycle concept to broken compatible cycles, we show that the absolute value of the coefficient of $k^{|V(G)|-i}$ in $P(G,α;k)$ associated with admissible assignings $α$ equals the number of $α$-compatible spanning subgraphs that have $i$ edges and contain no broken $α$-compatible cycles. According to the combinatorial explanation, we establish a unified order-preserving relation from admissible assignings to cycle-assigning polynomials, and further show that for any admissible assigning $α$ of $G$ with $α(e)=1$ for every loop $e$, the coefficients of $P(G,α;k)$ are nonzero and alternate in sign.

Let $\mathcal{P} \subset \mathbb{R}^d$ be a lattice polytope of dimension $d$. Let $b(\mathcal{P})$ denote the number of lattice points belonging to the boundary of $\mathcal{P}$ and $c(\mathcal{P})$ that to the interior of $\mathcal{P}$. It follows from the lower bound theorem of Ehrhart polynomials that, when $c > 0$, \[ {\rm vol}(\mathcal{P}) \geq (d \cdot c(\mathcal{P}) + (d-1) \cdot b(\mathcal{P}) - d^2 + 2)/d!, \] where ${\rm vol}(\mathcal{P})$ is the (Lebesgue) volume of $\mathcal{P}$. Pick's formula guarantees that, when $d = 2$, the above inequality is an equality. In the present paper several classes of lattice polytopes for which the equality here holds will be presented.
Proof of a conjecture on graph polytope
Graph polytopes arising from vertex-weighted graphs were first introduced by Bóna, Ju, and Yoshida. We prove a conjecture stating that for any simple connected graph, the numerator polynomial of the Ehrhart series of its graph polytope is palindromic, using Stanley's reciprocity theorem. Furthermore, we introduce hypergraph polytopes and establish that every simple, connected, unimodular hypergraph polytope is an integer polytope. Additionally, for simple connected uniform hypergraph polytopes, we demonstrate that the numerator polynomial of their Ehrhart series is palindromic.
The repetition threshold for ternary rich words
In 2017, Vesti proposed the problem of determining the repetition threshold for infinite rich words, i.e., for infinite words in which all factors of length $n$ contain $n$ distinct nonempty palindromic factors. In 2020, Currie, Mol, and Rampersad proved a conjecture of Baranwal and Shallit that the repetition threshold for binary rich words is $2 + \sqrt{2}/2$. In this paper, we prove a structure theorem for $16/7$-power-free ternary rich words. Using the structure theorem, we deduce that the repetition threshold for ternary rich words is $1 + 1/(3 - μ) \approx 2.25876324$, where $μ$ is the unique real root of the polynomial $x^3 - 2x^2 - 1$.
Combinatorics of graded module categories over skew polynomial algebras at roots of unity
We introduce an operation on skew-symmetric matrices over $\mathbb{Z}/\ell\mathbb{Z}$ called switching, and also define a class of skew-symmetric matrices over $\mathbb{Z}/\ell\mathbb{Z}$ referred to as modular Eulerian matrices. We then show that these are closely related to the graded module categories over skew polynomial algebras at $\ell$-th roots of unity. As an application, we study the point simplicial complexes of skew polynomial algebras at cube roots of unity.
A tale of two $q$-deformations : connecting dual polar spaces and weighted hypercubes
Two $q$-analogs of the hypercube graph are introduced and shown to be related through a graph quotient. The roles of the subspace lattice graph, of a twisted primitive elements of $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(2))$ and of the dual $q$-Krawtchouk polynomials are elaborated upon. This paper is dedicated to Tom Koornwinder.
Elementary symmetric partitions
Let e_k(x_1,...,x_l) be an elementary symmetric polynomial and let mu = (mu_1,...,mu_l) be an integer partition. Define pre_k(mu) to be the partition whose parts are the summands in the evaluation e_k(mu_1,...,mu_l). The study of such partitions was initiated by Ballantine, Beck, and Merca who showed (among other things) that pre_2 is injective as a map on binary partitions of n. In the present work we derive a host of identities involving the sequences which count the number of parts of a given value in the image of pre_2. These include generating functions, explicit expressions, and formulas for forward differences. We generalize some of these to d-ary partitions and explore connections with color partitions. Our techniques include the use of generating functions and bijections on rooted partitions. We end with a list of conjectures and a direction for future research.
Cops against a cheating robber
We investigate a cheating robot version of Cops and Robber, first introduced by Huggan and Nowakowski, where both the cops and the robber move simultaneously, but the robber is allowed to react to the cops' moves. For conciseness, we refer to this game as Cops and Cheating Robot. The cheating robot number for a graph is the fewest number of cops needed to win on the graph. We introduce a new parameter for this variation, called the push number, which gives the value for the minimum number of cops that move onto the robber's vertex given that there are a cheating robot number of cops on the graph. After producing some elementary results on the push number, we use it to give a relationship between Cops and Cheating Robot and Surrounding Cops and Robbers. We investigate the cheating robot number for planar graphs and give a tight bound for bipartite planar graphs. We show that determining whether a graph has a cheating robot number at most fixed $k$ can be done in polynomial time. We also obtain bounds on the cheating robot number for strong and lexicographic products of graphs.
Polynomial functions on a class of finite non-commutative rings
Let $R$ be a finite non-commutative ring with $1\ne 0$. By a polynomial function on $R$, we mean a function $F\colon R\longrightarrow R$ induced by a polynomial $f=\sum\limits_{i=0}^{n}a_ix^i\in R[x]$ via right substitution of the variable $x$, i.e.
$F(a)=f(a)= \sum\limits_{i=0}^{n}a_ia^i$ for every $a\in R$. In this paper, we study the polynomial functions of the free $R$-algebra with a central basis $\{1,β_1,\ldots,β_k\}$ ($k\ge 1$) such that $β_iβ_j=0$ for every $1\le i,j\le k$, $R[β_1,\ldots,β_k]$. %, the ring of dual numbers over $R$ in $k$ variables.
Our investigation revolves around assigning a polynomial $λ_f(y,z)$ over $R$ in non-commutating variables $y$ and $z$ to each polynomial $f$ in $R[x]$; and describing the polynomial functions on $R[β_1,\ldots,β_k]$ through the polynomial functions induced on $R$ by polynomials in $R[x]$ and by their assigned polynomials in the non-commutating variables $y$ and $z$. %and analyzing the resulting polynomial functions on $R[β_1,\ldots,β_k]$.
By extending results from the commutative case to the non-commutative scenario, we demonstrate that several properties and theorems in the commutative case can be generalized to the non-commutative setting with appropriate adjustments.
Counting Flows of $b$-compatible Graphs
Kochol introduced the assigning polynomial $F(G,α;k)$ to count nowhere-zero $(A,b)$-flows of a graph $G$, where $A$ is a finite Abelian group and $α$ is a $\{0,1\}$-assigning from a family $Λ(G)$ of certain nonempty vertex subsets of $G$ to $\{0,1\}$. We introduce the concepts of $b$-compatible graph and $b$-compatible broken bond to give an explicit formula for the assigning polynomials and to examine their coefficients. More specifically, for a function $b:V(G)\to A$, let $α_{G,b}$ be a $\{0,1\}$-assigning of $G$ such that for each $X\inΛ(G)$, $α_{G,b}(X)=0$ if and only if $\sum_{v\in X}b(v)=0$. We show that for any $\{0,1\}$-assigning $α$ of $G$, if there exists a function $b:V(G)\to A$ such that $G$ is $b$-compatible and $α=α_{G,b}$, then the assigning polynomial $F(G,α;k)$ has the $b$-compatible spanning subgraph expansion \[ F(G,α;k)=\sum_{\substack{S\subseteq E(G),\\G-S\mbox{ is $b$-compatible}}}(-1)^{|S|}k^{m(G-S)}, \] and is the following form $F(G,α;k)=\sum_{i=0}^{m(G)}(-1)^ia_i(G,α)k^{m(G)-i}$, where each $a_i(G,α)$ is the number of subsets $S$ of $E(G)$ having $i$ edges such that $G-S$ is $b$-compatible and $S$ contains no $b$-compatible broken bonds with respect to a total order on $E(G)$. Applying the counting interpretation, we also obtain unified comparison relations for the signless coefficients of assigning polynomials. Namely, for any $\{0,1\}$-assignings $α,α'$ of $G$, if there exist functions $b:V(G)\to A$ and $b':V(G)\to A'$ such that $G$ is both $b$-compatible and $b'$-compatible, $α=α_{G,b}$, $α'=α_{G,b'}$ and $α(X)\leα'(X)$ for all $X\inΛ(G)$, then \[ a_i(G,α)\le a_i(G,α') \quad \mbox{ for }\quad i=0,1,\ldots, m(G). \]
Artin Symmetric Functions
In this paper we construct an algebraic invariant attached to Galois representations over number fields. This invariant, which we call an Artin symmetric function, lives in a certain ring we introduce called the ring of arithmetic symmetric functions. This ring is built from a family of symmetric functions rings indexed by prime ideals of the base field. We prove many necessary basic results for the ring of arithmetic symmetric functions as well as introduce the analogues of some standard number-theoretic objects in this setting. We prove that the Artin symmetric functions satisfy the same algebraic properties that the Artin L-functions do with respect to induction, inflation, and direct summation of representations. The expansion coefficients of these symmetric functions in different natural bases are shown to be character values of representations of a compact group related to the original Galois group. In the most interesting case, the expansion coefficients into a specialized Hall-Littlewood basis come from new representations built from the original Galois representation using polynomial functors corresponding to modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials. Using a special case of the Satake isomorphism in type GL, as formulated by Macdonald, we show that the Artin symmetric functions yield families of functions in the (finite) global spherical Hecke algebras in type GL which exhibit natural stability properties. We compute the Mellin transforms of these functions and relate them to infinite products of shifted Artin L-functions. We then prove some analytic properties of these Dirichlet series and give an explicit expansion of these series using the Hall-Littlewood polynomial functors.
About almost covering subsets of the hypercube
Let $\mathbb{F}$ be a field, and consider the hypercube $\{ 0, 1 \}^{n}$ in $\mathbb{F}^{n}$. Sziklai and Weiner (Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 2022) showed that if a polynomial $P ( X_{1}, \dots, X_{n} ) \in \mathbb{F}[ X_{1}, \dots, X_{n}]$ vanishes on every point of the hypercube $\{0,1\}^{n}$ except those with at most $r$ many ones then the degree of the polynomial will be at least $n-r$. This is a generalization of Alon and Füredi's fundamental result (European Journal of Combinatorics 1993) about polynomials vanishing on every point of the hypercube except at the origin (point with all zero coordinates). Sziklai and Weiner proved their interesting result using Möbius inversion formula and the Zeilberger method for proving binomial equalities. In this short note, we show that a stronger version of Sziklai and Weiner's result can be derived directly from Alon and Füredi's result.

Given a finite word $w$, Guibas and Odlyzko (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 30, 1981, 183-208) showed that the autocorrelation polynomial $φ_w(t)$ of $w$, which records the set of self-overlaps of $w$, explicitly determines for each $n$, the number $|B_n(w)|$ of words of length $n$ that avoid $w$. We consider this and related problems from the viewpoint of symbolic dynamics, focusing on the setting of $X_{\{w\}}$, the space of all bi-infinite sequences that avoid $w$. We first summarize and elaborate upon (J. Combin. Theory Ser. A, 30, 1981, 183-208) and other work to show that the sequence $|B_n(w)|$ is equivalent to several invariants of $X_{\{w\}}$. We then give a finite-state labeled graphical representation $L_w$ of $X_{\{w\}}$ and show that $w$ can be recovered from the graph isomorphism class of the unlabeled version of $L_w$. Using $L_w$, we apply ideas from probability and Perron-Frobenius theory to obtain results comparing features of $X_{\{w\}}$ for different $w$. Next, we give partial results on the problem of classifying the spaces $X_{\{w\}}$ up to conjugacy. Finally, we extend some of our results to spaces of multi-dimensional arrays that avoid a given finite pattern.
An inverse theorem for the Gowers $U^3$-norm relative to quadratic level sets
We prove an effective version of the inverse theorem for the Gowers $U^3$-norm for functions supported on high-rank quadratic level sets in finite vector spaces. For configurations controlled by the $U^3$-norm (complexity-two configurations), this enables one to run a density increment argument with respect to quadratic level sets, which are analogues of Bohr sets in the context of quadratic Fourier analysis on finite vector spaces. We demonstrate such an argument by deriving an exponential bound on the Ramsey number of three-term progressions which are the same colour as their common difference (``Brauer quadruples''), a result we have been unable to establish by other means.
Our methods also yield polylogarithmic bounds on the density of sets lacking translation-invariant configurations of complexity two. Such bounds for four-term progressions were obtained by Green and Tao using a simpler weak-regularity argument. In an appendix, we give an example of how to generalise Green and Tao's argument to other translation-invariant configurations of complexity two. However, this crucially relies on an estimate coming from the Croot-Lev-Pach polynomial method, which may not be applicable to all systems of complexity two. Hence running a density increment with respect to quadratic level sets may still prove useful for such problems. It may also serve as a model for running density increments on more general nil-Bohr sets, with a view to effectivising other Szemerédi-type theorems.
