Lattice paths and branched continued fractions. II. Multivariate Lah polynomials and Lah symmetric functions
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 92, 103235 (February 2021) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the generic Lah polynomials $L_{n,k}(φ)$, which enumerate unordered forests of increasing ordered trees with a weight $φ_i$ for each vertex with $i$ children. We show that, if the weight sequence $φ$ is Toeplitz-totally positive, then the triangular array of generic Lah polynomials is totally positive and the sequence of row-generating polynomials $L_n(φ,y)$ is coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive. Upon specialization we obtain results for the Lah symmetric functions and multivariate Lah polynomials of positive and negative type. The multivariate Lah polynomials of positive type are also given by a branched continued fraction. Our proofs use mainly the method of production matrices; the production matrix is obtained by a bijection from ordered forests of increasing ordered trees to labeled partial Lukasiewicz paths. We also give a second proof of the continued fraction using the Euler--Gauss recurrence method.
Packing Directed Cycles Quarter- and Half-Integrally
Published in Combinatorica 42(2), 1409-1438, 2022; Proceedings: ESA 2019, 72:1-72:13 • View PublicationBIB
The celebrated Erdős-Pósa theorem states that every undirected graph that does not admit a family of $k$ vertex-disjoint cycles contains a feedback vertex set (a set of vertices hitting all cycles in the graph) of size $O(k \log k)$. After being known for long as Younger's conjecture, a similar statement for directed graphs has been proven in 1996 by Reed, Robertson, Seymour, and Thomas. However, in their proof, the dependency of the size of the feedback vertex set on the size of vertex-disjoint cycle packing is not elementary. We show that if we compare the size of a minimum feedback vertex set in a directed graph with the quarter-integral cycle packing number, we obtain a polynomial bound. More precisely, we show that if in a directed graph $G$ there is no family of $k$ cycles such that every vertex of $G$ is in at most four of the cycles, then there exists a feedback vertex set in $G$ of size $O(k^4)$. Furthermore, a variant of our proof shows that if in a directed graph $G$ there is no family of $k$ cycles such that every vertex of $G$ is in at most two of the cycles, then there exists a feedback vertex set in $G$ of size $O(k^6)$. On the way there we prove a more general result about quarter-integral packing of subgraphs of high directed treewidth: for every pair of positive integers $a$ and $b$, if a directed graph $G$ has directed treewidth $Ω(a^6 b^8 \log^2(ab))$, then one can find in $G$ a family of $a$ subgraphs, each of directed treewidth at least $b$, such that every vertex of $G$ is in at most four subgraphs.

Some new results in random matrices over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this note we give various characterizations of random walks with possibly different steps that have relatively large discrepancy from the uniform distribution modulo a prime p, and use these results to study the distribution of the rank of random matrices over F_p and the equi-distribution behavior of normal vectors of random hyperplanes. We also study the probability that a random square matrix is eigenvalue-free, or when its characteristic polynomial is divisible by a given irreducible polynomial in the limit n to infinity in F_p. We show that these statistics are universal, extending results of Stong and Neumann-Praeger beyond the uniform model.

Some $q$-series identities extending work of Andrews, Crippa, and Simon on sums of divisors functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article we extend a theorem of Andrews, Crippa, and Simon on the asymptotic behavior of polynomials defined by a general class of recursive equations. Here the polynomials are in the variable $q$, and the recursive definition at step $n$ introduces a polynomial in $n$. Our extension replaces the polynomial in $n$ with either an exponential or periodic function of $n$.

Determining the Hausdorff Distance Between Trees in Polynomial Time
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 23, no. 3, Discrete Algorithms (August 19, 2021) dmtcs:6952 • View PublicationBIB
The Hausdorff distance is a relatively new measure of similarity of graphs. The notion of the Hausdorff distance considers a special kind of a common subgraph of the compared graphs and depends on the structural properties outside of the common subgraph. There was no known efficient algorithm for the problem of determining the Hausdorff distance between two trees, and in this paper we present a polynomial-time algorithm for it. The algorithm is recursive and it utilizes the divide and conquer technique. As a subtask it also uses the procedure that is based on the well known graph algorithm of finding the maximum bipartite matching.

The purpose of this work is to provide a common combinatorial framework for some of the analogues and generalizations of Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials that have appeared since the introduction of these remarkable polynomials (e.g., parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials, Kazhdan-Lusztig R-polynomials of zircons, and Kazhdan-Lusztig-Vogan polynomials for fixed point free involutions).

Finite free convolutions via Weingarten calculus
Published in Random Matrices Theory Appl. 10 (2021), no. 4, Paper No. 2150038 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the three finite free convolutions for polynomials studied in a recent paper by Marcus, Spielman, and Srivastava. Each can be described either by direct explicit formulae or in terms of operations on randomly rotated matrices. We present an alternate approach to the equivalence between these descriptions, based on combinatorial Weingarten methods for integration over the unitary and orthogonal groups. A key aspect of our approach is to identify a certain \emph{quadrature property}, which is satisfied by some important series of subgroups of the unitary groups (including the groups of unitary, orthogonal, and signed permutation matrices), and which yields the desired convolution formulae.
On the generation of rank 3 simple matroids with an application to Terao's freeness conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we describe a parallel algorithm for generating all non-isomorphic rank $3$ simple matroids with a given multiplicity vector. We apply our implementation in the HPC version of GAP to generate all rank $3$ simple matroids with at most $14$ atoms and a splitting characteristic polynomial. We have stored the resulting matroids alongside with various useful invariants in a publicly available, ArangoDB-powered database. As a byproduct we show that the smallest divisionally free rank $3$ arrangement which is not inductively free has $14$ hyperplanes and exists in all characteristics distinct from $2$ and $5$. Another database query proves that Terao's freeness conjecture is true for rank $3$ arrangements with $14$ hyperplanes in any characteristic.

Dimension is polynomial in height for posets with planar cover graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that height $h$ posets that have planar cover graphs have dimension $\mathcal{O}(h^6)$. Previously, the best upper bound was $2^{\mathcal{O}(h^3)}$. Planarity plays a key role in our arguments, since there are posets such that (1) dimension is exponential in height and (2) the cover graph excludes $K_5$ as a minor.

Proper-walk connection number of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper studies the problem of proper-walk connection number: given an undirected connected graph, our aim is to colour its edges with as few colours as possible so that there exists a properly coloured walk between every pair of vertices of the graph i.e. a walk that does not use consecutively two edges of the same colour. The problem was already solved on several classes of graphs but still open in the general case. We establish that the problem can always be solved in polynomial time in the size of the graph and we provide a characterization of the graphs that can be properly connected with $k$ colours for every possible value of $k$.

On the equational graphs over finite fields
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we generalize the notion of functional graph. Specifically, given an equation $E(X,Y) = 0$ with variables $X$ and $Y$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ of odd characteristic, we define a digraph by choosing the elements in $\mathbb{F}_q$ as vertices and drawing an edge from $x$ to $y$ if and only if $E(x,y)=0$. We call this graph as equational graph. In this paper, we study the equational graphs when choosing $E(X,Y) = (Y^2 - f(X))(λY^2 - f(X))$ with $f(X)$ a polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_q$ and $λ$ a non-square element in $\mathbb{F}_q$. We show that if $f$ is a permutation polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_q$, then every connected component of the graph has a Hamiltonian cycle. Moreover, these Hamiltonian cycles can be used to construct balancing binary sequences. By making computations for permutation polynomials $f$ of low degree, it appears that almost all these graphs are strongly connected, and there are many Hamiltonian cycles in such a graph if it is connected.

Noncommutative unicellular LLT polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is known that unicellular LLT polynomials are related to the quasi-symmetric chromatic polynomials of certain graphs by the $(t-1)$-transform of symmetric functions. We investigate the extension of this transformation to various combinatorial Hopf algebras and prove a noncommutative version of this property.
Weighted $\mathsf{P}-$partitions enumerator
Published • View PublicationBIB
To an extended permutohedron we associate the weighted integer points enumerator, whose principal specialization is the $f$-polynomial. In the case of poset cones it refines Gessel's $\mathsf{P}$-partitions enumerator. We show that this enumerator is a quasisymmetric function obtained by universal morphism from the Hopf algebra of posets.

Trung's Construction and the Charney-Davis Conjecture
Published in Bull. Malays. Math. Sci. Soc., 44 (2021), 9-16 • View PublicationBIB
We consider a construction by which we obtain a simple graph $\mathrm{T}(H,v)$ from a simple graph $H$ and a non-isolated vertex $v$ of $H$. We call this construction "Trung's construction". We prove that $\mathrm{T}(H,v)$ is well-covered, W$_2$ or Gorenstein if and only if $H$ is so. Also we present a formula for computing the independence polynomial of $\mathrm{T}(H,v)$ and investigate when $\mathrm{T}(H,v)$ satisfies the Charney-Davis conjecture. As a consequence of our results, we show that every Gorenstein planar graph with girth at least four, satisfies the Charney-Davis conjecture.

Some implications of a conjecture of Zabrocki to the action of $S_{n}$ on polynomial differential forms
The symmetric group acts on polynomial differential forms on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ through its action by permuting the coordinates. In this paper the $S_{n}% $-invariants are shown to be freely generated by the elementary symmetric polynomials and their exterior derivatives. A basis of the alternants in the quotient of the ideal generated by the homogeneous invariants of positive degree is given. In addition, the highest bigraded degrees are given for the quotient. All of these results are consistent with predictions derived by Garsia and Romero from a recent conjecture of Zabrocki.

The Weighted Sitting Closer to Friends than Enemies Problem in the Line
Published • View PublicationBIB
The weighted \emph{Sitting Closer to Friends than Enemies} (SCFE) problem is to find an injection of the vertex set of a given weighted graph into a given metric space so that, for every pair of incident edges with different weight, the end vertices of the heavier edge are closer than the end vertices of the lighter edge. The \emph{Seriation} problem is to find a simultaneous reordering of the rows and columns of a symmetric matrix such that the entries are monotone nondecreasing in rows and columns when moving towards the diagonal. If such a reordering exists, it is called a \emph{Robinson} ordering. In this work, we establish a connection between the SCFE problem and the Seriation problem. We show that if the \emph{extended adjacency matrix} of a given weighted graph $G$ has no Robinson ordering then $G$ has no injection in $\mathbb{R}$ that solves the SCFE problem. On the other hand, if the extended adjacency matrix of $G$ has a Robinson ordering, we construct a polyhedron that is not empty if and only if there is an injection of the vertex set of $G$ in $\mathbb{R}$ that solves the SCFE problem. As a consequence of these results, we conclude that deciding the existence of (and constructing) such an injection in $\mathbb{R}$ for a given \emph{complete} weighted graph can be done in polynomial time. On the other hand, we show that deciding if an \emph{incomplete} weighted graph has such an injection in $\mathbb{R}$ is NP-Complete.
Logarithmic concavity of Schur and related polynomials

Polynomial-size vectors are enough for the unimodular triangulation of simplicial cones
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, Bruns and von Thaden established a bound for the length of vectors involved in a unimodular triangulation of simplicial cones. The bound is exponential in the square of the logarithm of the multiplicity, and improves previous bounds significantly. The authors mentioned that the next goal would be a bound that is polynomial in the multiplicity but not knowing if such a bound exists. In this paper we will prove that such a bound, which is polynomial in the multiplicity $μ$, indeed exists. In detail, the bound is of the type $μ^{f(d)}$ with $f(d) \in \mathcal{O}(d)$.

Minimal resolutions of monomial ideals
An explicit combinatorial minimal free resolution of an arbitrary monomial ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field of characteristic $0$ is defined canonically, without any choices, using higher-dimensional generalizations of combined spanning trees for cycles and cocycles ("hedges") in the upper Koszul simplicial complexes of $I$ at lattice points in $\mathbb{Z}^n$. The differentials in these "sylvan resolutions" are expressed as matrices whose entries are sums over lattice paths of weights determined combinatorially by sequences of hedges ("hedgerows") along each lattice path. This combinatorics enters via an explicit matroidal expression for the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverses of the differentials in any CW complex as weighted averages of splittings defined by hedges. This "Hedge Formula" also yields a projection formula from CW chains to boundaries. The translation from Moore-Penrose combinatorics to free resolutions relies on Wall complexes, which construct minimal free resolutions of graded ideals from vertical splittings of Koszul bicomplexes. The algebra of Wall complexes applied to individual hedgerows yields explicit but noncanonical combinatorial minimal free resolutions of arbitrary monomial ideals in any characteristic.

Arc-disjoint in- and out-branchings rooted at the same vertex in compositions of digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A digraph $D=(V, A)$ has a good pair at a vertex $r$ if $D$ has a pair of arc-disjoint in- and out-branchings rooted at $r$. Let $T$ be a digraph with $t$ vertices $u_1,\dots , u_t$ and let $H_1,\dots H_t$ be digraphs such that $H_i$ has vertices $u_{i,j_i},\ 1\le j_i\le n_i.$ Then the composition $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ is a digraph with vertex set $\{u_{i,j_i}\mid 1\le i\le t, 1\le j_i\le n_i\}$ and arc set $$A(Q)=\cup^t_{i=1}A(H_i)\cup \{u_{ij_i}u_{pq_p}\mid u_iu_p\in A(T), 1\le j_i\le n_i, 1\le q_p\le n_p\}.$$ When $T$ is arbitrary, we obtain the following result: every strong digraph composition $Q$ in which $n_i\ge 2$ for every $1\leq i\leq t$, has a good pair at every vertex of $Q.$ The condition of $n_i\ge 2$ in this result cannot be relaxed. When $T$ is semicomplete, we characterize semicomplete compositions with a good pair, which generalizes the corresponding characterization by Bang-Jensen and Huang (J. Graph Theory, 1995) for quasi-transitive digraphs. As a result, we can decide in polynomial time whether a given semicomplete composition has a good pair rooted at a given vertex.
