Trung's Construction and the Charney-Davis Conjecture
Published in Bull. Malays. Math. Sci. Soc., 44 (2021), 9-16 • View PublicationBIB
We consider a construction by which we obtain a simple graph $\mathrm{T}(H,v)$ from a simple graph $H$ and a non-isolated vertex $v$ of $H$. We call this construction "Trung's construction". We prove that $\mathrm{T}(H,v)$ is well-covered, W$_2$ or Gorenstein if and only if $H$ is so. Also we present a formula for computing the independence polynomial of $\mathrm{T}(H,v)$ and investigate when $\mathrm{T}(H,v)$ satisfies the Charney-Davis conjecture. As a consequence of our results, we show that every Gorenstein planar graph with girth at least four, satisfies the Charney-Davis conjecture.

Some implications of a conjecture of Zabrocki to the action of $S_{n}$ on polynomial differential forms
The symmetric group acts on polynomial differential forms on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$ through its action by permuting the coordinates. In this paper the $S_{n}% $-invariants are shown to be freely generated by the elementary symmetric polynomials and their exterior derivatives. A basis of the alternants in the quotient of the ideal generated by the homogeneous invariants of positive degree is given. In addition, the highest bigraded degrees are given for the quotient. All of these results are consistent with predictions derived by Garsia and Romero from a recent conjecture of Zabrocki.

The Weighted Sitting Closer to Friends than Enemies Problem in the Line
Published • View PublicationBIB
The weighted \emph{Sitting Closer to Friends than Enemies} (SCFE) problem is to find an injection of the vertex set of a given weighted graph into a given metric space so that, for every pair of incident edges with different weight, the end vertices of the heavier edge are closer than the end vertices of the lighter edge. The \emph{Seriation} problem is to find a simultaneous reordering of the rows and columns of a symmetric matrix such that the entries are monotone nondecreasing in rows and columns when moving towards the diagonal. If such a reordering exists, it is called a \emph{Robinson} ordering. In this work, we establish a connection between the SCFE problem and the Seriation problem. We show that if the \emph{extended adjacency matrix} of a given weighted graph $G$ has no Robinson ordering then $G$ has no injection in $\mathbb{R}$ that solves the SCFE problem. On the other hand, if the extended adjacency matrix of $G$ has a Robinson ordering, we construct a polyhedron that is not empty if and only if there is an injection of the vertex set of $G$ in $\mathbb{R}$ that solves the SCFE problem. As a consequence of these results, we conclude that deciding the existence of (and constructing) such an injection in $\mathbb{R}$ for a given \emph{complete} weighted graph can be done in polynomial time. On the other hand, we show that deciding if an \emph{incomplete} weighted graph has such an injection in $\mathbb{R}$ is NP-Complete.
Logarithmic concavity of Schur and related polynomials

We show that normalized Schur polynomials are strongly log-concave. As a consequence, we obtain Okounkov's log-concavity conjecture for Littlewood-Richardson coefficients in the special case of Kostka numbers.

Polynomial-size vectors are enough for the unimodular triangulation of simplicial cones
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, Bruns and von Thaden established a bound for the length of vectors involved in a unimodular triangulation of simplicial cones. The bound is exponential in the square of the logarithm of the multiplicity, and improves previous bounds significantly. The authors mentioned that the next goal would be a bound that is polynomial in the multiplicity but not knowing if such a bound exists. In this paper we will prove that such a bound, which is polynomial in the multiplicity $μ$, indeed exists. In detail, the bound is of the type $μ^{f(d)}$ with $f(d) \in \mathcal{O}(d)$.

Minimal resolutions of monomial ideals
An explicit combinatorial minimal free resolution of an arbitrary monomial ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring in $n$ variables over a field of characteristic $0$ is defined canonically, without any choices, using higher-dimensional generalizations of combined spanning trees for cycles and cocycles ("hedges") in the upper Koszul simplicial complexes of $I$ at lattice points in $\mathbb{Z}^n$. The differentials in these "sylvan resolutions" are expressed as matrices whose entries are sums over lattice paths of weights determined combinatorially by sequences of hedges ("hedgerows") along each lattice path. This combinatorics enters via an explicit matroidal expression for the Moore-Penrose pseudoinverses of the differentials in any CW complex as weighted averages of splittings defined by hedges. This "Hedge Formula" also yields a projection formula from CW chains to boundaries. The translation from Moore-Penrose combinatorics to free resolutions relies on Wall complexes, which construct minimal free resolutions of graded ideals from vertical splittings of Koszul bicomplexes. The algebra of Wall complexes applied to individual hedgerows yields explicit but noncanonical combinatorial minimal free resolutions of arbitrary monomial ideals in any characteristic.

Arc-disjoint in- and out-branchings rooted at the same vertex in compositions of digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
A digraph $D=(V, A)$ has a good pair at a vertex $r$ if $D$ has a pair of arc-disjoint in- and out-branchings rooted at $r$. Let $T$ be a digraph with $t$ vertices $u_1,\dots , u_t$ and let $H_1,\dots H_t$ be digraphs such that $H_i$ has vertices $u_{i,j_i},\ 1\le j_i\le n_i.$ Then the composition $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ is a digraph with vertex set $\{u_{i,j_i}\mid 1\le i\le t, 1\le j_i\le n_i\}$ and arc set $$A(Q)=\cup^t_{i=1}A(H_i)\cup \{u_{ij_i}u_{pq_p}\mid u_iu_p\in A(T), 1\le j_i\le n_i, 1\le q_p\le n_p\}.$$ When $T$ is arbitrary, we obtain the following result: every strong digraph composition $Q$ in which $n_i\ge 2$ for every $1\leq i\leq t$, has a good pair at every vertex of $Q.$ The condition of $n_i\ge 2$ in this result cannot be relaxed. When $T$ is semicomplete, we characterize semicomplete compositions with a good pair, which generalizes the corresponding characterization by Bang-Jensen and Huang (J. Graph Theory, 1995) for quasi-transitive digraphs. As a result, we can decide in polynomial time whether a given semicomplete composition has a good pair rooted at a given vertex.

On the coproduct in affine Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
The cohomology of the affine flag variety of a complex reductive group is a comodule over the cohomology of the affine Grassmannian. We give positive formulae for the coproduct of an affine Schubert class in terms of affine Stanley classes and finite Schubert classes, in (torus-equivariant) cohomology and K-theory. As an application, we deduce monomial positivity for the affine Schubert polynomials of the second author.

On edge-ordered Ramsey numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
An edge-ordered graph is a graph with a linear ordering of its edges. Two edge-ordered graphs are equivalent if their is an isomorphism between them preserving the ordering of the edges. The edge-ordered Ramsey number $r_{edge}(H; q)$ of an edge-ordered graph $H$ is the smallest $N$ such that there exists an edge-ordered graph $G$ on $N$ vertices such that, for every $q$-coloring of the edges of $G$, there is a monochromatic subgraph of $G$ equivalent to $H$. Recently, Balko and Vizer announced that $r_{edge}(H;q)$ exists. However, their proof uses the Graham-Rothschild theorem and consequently gives an enormous upper bound on these numbers. We give a new proof giving a much better bound. We prove that for every edge-ordered graph $H$ on $n$ vertices, we have $r_{edge}(H;q) \leq 2^{c^qn^{2q-2}\log^q n}$, where $c$ is an absolute constant. We also explore the edge-ordered Ramsey number of sparser graphs and prove a polynomial bound for edge-ordered graphs of bounded degeneracy. We also prove a strengthening for edge-labeled graphs, graphs where every edge is given a label and the labels do not necessary have an ordering.
Mutually Orthogonal Latin Squares based on Cellular Automata
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate sets of Mutually Orthogonal Latin Squares (MOLS) generated by Cellular Automata (CA) over finite fields. After introducing how a CA defined by a bipermutive local rule of diameter $d$ over an alphabet of $q$ elements generates a Latin square of order $q^{d-1}$, we study the conditions under which two CA generate a pair of orthogonal Latin squares. In particular, we prove that the Latin squares induced by two Linear Bipermutive CA (LBCA) over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ are orthogonal if and only if the polynomials associated to their local rules are relatively prime. Next, we enumerate all such pairs of orthogonal Latin squares by counting the pairs of coprime monic polynomials with nonzero constant term and degree $n$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Finally, we present a construction of MOLS generated by LBCA with irreducible polynomials and prove the maximality of the resulting sets, as well as a lower bound which is asymptotically close to their actual number.

Logarithmic integrals, zeta values, and tiered binomial coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study logarithmic integrals of the form $\int_0^1 x^i\ln^n(x)\ln^m(1-x)dx$. They are expressed as a rational linear combination of certain rational numbers $(n,m)_i$, which we call tiered binomial coefficients, and products of the zeta values $ζ(2)$, $ζ(3)$,\dots. Various properties of the tiered binomial coefficients are established. They involve, amongst others, the binomial transform, truncated multiple zeta and multiple zeta star values, as well as special functions. As an application we discuss the limit law of the number of comparisons of the Quicksort algorithm: we reprove that the moments of the limit law are rational polynomials in the zeta values. A novel expression for the cumulants of the Quicksort limit is also presented.

Consecutive patterns in inversion sequences II: avoiding patterns of relations
Inversion sequences are integer sequences $e=e_{1}e_{2}\dots e_{n}$ such that $0\leq e_{i}<i$ for each $i$. The study of patterns in inversion sequences was initiated by Corteel--Martinez--Savage--Weselcouch and Mansour--Shattuck in the classical (non-consecutive) case, and later by Auli--Elizalde in the consecutive case, where the entries of a pattern are required to occur in adjacent positions. In this paper we continue this investigation by considering {\em consecutive patterns of relations}, in analogy to the work of Martinez--Savage in the classical case. Specifically, given two binary relations $R_{1},R_2\in\{\leq,\geq,<,>,=,\neq\}$, we study inversion sequences $e$ with no subindex $i$ such that $e_{i}R_{1}e_{i+1}R_{2}e_{i+2}$. By enumerating such inversion sequences according to their length, we obtain well-known quantities such as Catalan numbers, Fibonacci numbers and central polynomial numbers, relating inversion sequences to other combinatorial structures. We also classify consecutive patterns of relations into Wilf equivalence classes, according to the number of inversion sequences avoiding them, and into more restrictive classes that consider the positions of the occurrences of the patterns. As a byproduct of our techniques, we obtain a simple bijective proof of a result of Baxter--Shattuck and Kasraoui about Wilf-equivalence of vincular patterns, and we prove a conjecture of Martinez and Savage, as well as related enumeration formulas for inversion sequences satisfying certain unimodality conditions.

Hypergraphs without exponents
Here we give a short, concise proof for the following result. There exists a $k$-uniform hypergraph $H$ (for $k\geq 5$) without exponent, i.e., when the Turán function is not polynomial in $n$. More precisely, we have $ex(n,H)=o(n^{k-1})$ but it exceeds $n^{k-1-c}$ for any positive $c$ for $n> n_0(k,c)$. This is an extension (and simplification) of a result of Frankl and the first author from 1987 where the case $k=5$ was proven. We conjecture that it is true for $k\in \{3, 4\}$ as well.

A parametrized Poincare-Hopf Theorem and Clique Cardinalities of graphs
Given a locally injective real function g on the vertex set V of a finite simple graph G=(V,E), we prove the Poincare-Hopf formula f_G(t) = 1+t sum_{x in V} f_{S_g(x)}(t), where S_g(x) = { y in S(x), g(y) less than g(x) } and f_G(t)=1+f_0 t + ... + f_{d} t^{d+1} is the f-function encoding the f-vector of a graph G, where f_k counts the number of k-dimensional cliques, complete sub-graphs, in G. The corresponding computation of f reduces the problem recursively to n tasks of graphs of half the size. For t=-1, the parametric Poincare-Hopf formula reduces to the classical Poincare-Hopf result X(G)=sum_x i_g(x), with integer indices i_g(x)=1-X(S_g(x)) and Euler characteristic X. In the new Poincare-Hopf formula, the indices are integer polynomials and the curvatures K_x(t) expressed as index expectations K_x(t) = E[i_x(t)] are polynomials with rational coefficients. Integrating the Poincare-Hopf formula over probability spaces of functions g gives Gauss-Bonnet formulas like f_G(t) = 1+sum_{x} F_{S(x)}(t), where F_G is the anti-derivative of f_G. A similar computation is done for the generating function f_{G,H}(t,s) = sum_{k,l} f_{k,l}(G,H) s^k t^l of the f-intersection matrix f_{k,l}(G,H) counting the number of intersections of k-simplices in G with l-simplices in H. Also here, the computation is reduced to 4 n^2 computations for graphs of half the size: f_{G,H}(t,s) = sum_{v,w} f_{B_g(v),B_g(w)}(t,s) - f_{B_g(v),S_g(w)}(t,s) - f_{S_g(v),B_g(w)}(t,s) + f_{S_g(v),S_g(w)}(t,s), where B_g(v)= S_g(v)+{v} is the unit ball of v.

A characteristic map for the symmetric space of symplectic forms over a finite field
Published • View PublicationBIB
The characteristic map for the symmetric group is an isomorphism relating the representation theory of the symmetric group to symmetric functions. An analogous isomorphism is constructed for the symmetric space of symplectic forms over a finite field, with the spherical functions being sent to Macdonald polynomials with parameters $(q,q^2)$. An analogue of parabolic induction is interpreted as a certain multiplication of symmetric functions. Applications are given to Schur-positivity of skew Macdonald polynomials with parameters $(q,q^2)$ as well as combinatorial formulas for spherical function values.
The Application of Tridiagonal Matrices in P-polynomial Table Algebras

In this paper, we study the characters of two classes of P-polynomial table algebras using tridiagonal matrices. To this end, we obtain some results about the eigen-structure of special tridiagonal matrices. We also find a recursive relation for the characteristic polynomial of the first intersection matrix of P-polynomial table algebras by means of LU factorization.

How tree-based is my network? Proximity measures for unrooted phylogenetic networks
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tree-based networks are a class of phylogenetic networks that attempt to formally capture what is meant by "tree-like" evolution. A given non-tree-based phylogenetic network, however, might appear to be very close to being tree-based, or very far. In this paper, we formalise the notion of proximity to tree-based for unrooted phylogenetic networks, with a range of proximity measures. These measures also provide characterisations of tree-based networks. One measure in particular, related to the nearest neighbour interchange operation, allows us to define the notion of "tree-based rank". This provides a subclassification within the tree-based networks themselves, identifying those networks that are "very" tree-based. Finally, we prove results relating tree-based networks in the settings of rooted and unrooted phylogenetic networks, showing effectively that an unrooted network is tree-based if and only if it can be made a rooted tree-based network by rooting it and orienting the edges appropriately. This leads to a clarification of the contrasting decision problems for tree-based networks, which are polynomial in the rooted case but NP complete in the unrooted.

Constant coefficient Laurent biorthogonal polynomials, Riordan arrays and moment sequences
We study properties of constant coefficient Laurent biorthogonal polynomials using Riordan arrays. We give details of related orthogonal polynomials, and we explore relationships between the moments of these orthogonal polynomials, the moments of the defining Laurent biorthogonal polynomials, and the expansions of $T$-fractions. Closed form expressions are given for the polynomials and their moments.

Counting integer points of flow polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Baldoni--Vergne volume and Ehrhart polynomial formulas for flow polytopes are significant in at least two ways. On one hand, these formulas are in terms of Kostant partition functions, connecting flow polytopes to this classical vector partition function fundamental in representation theory. On the other hand the Ehrhart polynomials can be read off from the volume functions of flow polytopes. The latter is remarkable since the leading term of the Ehrhart polynomial of an integer polytope is its volume! Baldoni and Vergne proved these formulas via residues. To reveal the geometry of these formulas, the second author and Morales gave a fully geometric proof for the volume formula and a part generating function proof for the Ehrhart polynomial formula. The goal of the present paper is to provide a fully geometric proof for the Ehrhart polynomial formula of flow polytopes.
