The 3-term recurrence relation for Hermite polynomials was recently generalized to a recurrence relation for Wronskians of Hermite polynomials. In this note, a similar generalization for Laguerre polynomials is obtained.
Critical graphs for the chromatic edge-stability number
The chromatic edge-stability number ${\rm es}_χ(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of edges whose removal results in a spanning subgraph $G'$ with $χ(G')=χ(G)-1$. Edge-stability critical graphs are introduced as the graphs $G$ with the property that ${\rm es}_χ(G-e) < {\rm es}_χ(G)$ holds for every edge $e\in E(G)$. If $G$ is an edge-stability critical graph with $χ(G)=k$ and ${\rm es}_χ(G)=\ell$, then $G$ is $(k,\ell)$-critical. Graphs which are $(3,2)$-critical and contain at most four odd cycles are classified. It is also proved that the problem of deciding whether a graph $G$ has $χ(G)=k$ and is critical for the chromatic number can be reduced in polynomial time to the problem of deciding whether a graph is $(k,2)$-critical.

Recent work of the first author, Negut and Rasmussen, and of Oblomkov and Rozansky in the context of Khovanov--Rozansky knot homology produces a family of polynomials in $q$ and $t$ labeled by integer sequences. These polynomials can be expressed as equivariant Euler characteristics of certain line bundles on flag Hilbert schemes. The $q,t$-Catalan numbers and their rational analogues are special cases of this construction. In this paper, we give a purely combinatorial treatment of these polynomials and show that in many cases they have nonnegative integer coefficients.
For sequences of length at most 4, we prove that these coefficients enumerate subdiagrams in a certain fixed Young diagram and give an explicit symmetric chain decomposition of the set of such diagrams. This strengthens results of Lee, Li and Loehr for $(4,n)$ rational $q,t$-Catalan numbers.
Towards the full classification of exceptional scattered polynomials
Let $f(X) \in \mathbb{F}_{q^r}[X]$ be a $q$-polynomial. If the $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspace $U=\{(x^{q^t},f(x)) \mid x \in \mathbb{F}_{q^n}\}$ defines a maximum scattered linear set, then we call $f(X)$ a scattered polynomial of index $t$. The asymptotic behaviour of scattered polynomials of index $t$ is an interesting open problem. In this sense, exceptional scattered polynomials of index $t$ are those for which $U$ is a maximum scattered linear set in ${\rm PG}(1,q^{mr})$ for infinitely many $m$. The complete classifications of exceptional scattered monic polynomials of index $0$ (for $q>5$) and of index 1 were obtained by Bartoli and Zhou. In this paper we complete the classifications of exceptional scattered monic polynomials of index $0$ for $q \leq 4$. Also, some partial classifications are obtained for arbitrary $t$. As a consequence, the complete classification of exceptional scattered monic polynomials of index $2$ is given.

Let $X= \{x_1, x_2, \cdots, x_n\}$ be a finite alphabet, and let $K$ be a field. We study classes $\mathfrak{C}(X, W)$ of graded $K$-algebras $A = K\langle X\rangle / I$, generated by $X$ and with a fixed set of obstructions $W$. Initially we do not impose restrictions on $W$ and investigate the case when all algebras in $\mathfrak{C} (X, W)$ have polynomial growth and finite global dimension $d$. Next we consider classes $\mathfrak{C} (X, W)$ of algebras whose sets of obstructions $W$ are antichains of Lyndon words. The central question is "when a class $\mathfrak{C} (X, W)$ contains Artin-Schelter regular algebras?" Each class $\mathfrak{C} (X, W)$ defines a Lyndon pair $(N,W)$ which determines uniquely the global dimension, $gl\dim A$, and the Gelfand-Kirillov dimension, $GK\dim A$, for every $A \in \mathfrak{C}(X, W)$. We find a combinatorial condition in terms of $(N,W)$, so that the class $\mathfrak{C}(X, W)$ contains the enveloping algebra $U\mathfrak{g}$ of a Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. We introduce monomial Lie algebras defined by Lyndon words, and prove results on Groebner-Shirshov bases of Lie ideals generated by Lyndon-Lie monomials. Finally we classify all two-generated Artin-Schelter regular algebras of global dimensions $6$ and $7$ occurring as enveloping $U = U\mathfrak{g}$ of standard monomial Lie algebras. The classification is made in terms of their Lyndon pairs $(N, W)$, each of which determines also the explicit relations of $U$.

Young's lattice is a partial order on integer partitions whose saturated chains correspond to standard Young tableaux, one type of combinatorial object that generates the Schur basis for symmetric functions. Generalizing Young's lattice, we introduce a new partial order on weak compositions that we call the key poset. Saturated chains in this poset correspond to standard key tableaux, the combinatorial objects that generate the key polynomials, a nonsymmetric polynomial generalization of the Schur basis. Generalizing skew Schur functions, we define skew key polynomials in terms of this new poset. Using weak dual equivalence, we give a nonnegative weak composition Littlewood-Richardson rule for the key expansion of skew key polynomials, generalizing the flagged Littlewood-Richardson rule of Reiner and Shimozono.
Computing the Laplacian spectrum of linear octagonal-quadrilateral networks and its applications
Let Ln denote linear octagonal-quadrilateral networks. In this paper, we aim to firstly investigate the Laplacian spectrum on the basis of Laplacian polynomial of Ln. Then, by applying the relationship between the coefficients and roots of the polynomials, the Kirchhoff index and the complexity are determined.
Re$^3$counting the rationals
In 1999, Neil Calkin and Herbert Wilf wrote "Recounting the rationals" which gave an explicit bijection between the positive integers and the positive rationals. We find several different (some new) ways to construct this enumeration and thus create pointers for generalizing. Next, we use circle packings to generalize and find two other enumerations. Surprisingly, the three enumerations are all that are possible by using this technique. The proofs involve, among other things, "negative" continued fractions, Chebyshev polynomials, Euler's totient function, and generalizations of Stern's diatomic sequence. Finally we look at some of the remarkable similarities -- and differences -- of these sequences.

We study the combinatorial structure of the irreducible characters of the classical groups ${\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$, ${\rm SO}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and the "non-classical" odd symplectic group ${\rm Sp}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, finding new connections to the probabilistic model of Last Passage Percolation (LPP). Perturbing the expressions of these characters as generating functions of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, we produce two families of symmetric polynomials that interpolate between characters of ${\rm Sp}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$ and between characters of ${\rm SO}_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and ${\rm SO}_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$. We identify the first family as a one-parameter specialization of Koornwinder polynomials, for which we thus provide a novel combinatorial structure; on the other hand, the second family appears to be new. We next develop a method of Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern decomposition to establish identities between all these polynomials that, in the case of irreducible characters, can be viewed as branching rules. Through these formulas we connect orthogonal and symplectic characters, and more generally the interpolating polynomials, to LPP models with various symmetries, thus going beyond the link with classical Schur polynomials originally found by Baik and Rains (Duke Math. J., 2001). Taking the scaling limit of the LPP models, we finally provide an explanation of why the Tracy-Widom GOE and GSE distributions from random matrix theory admit formulations in terms of both Fredholm determinants and Fredholm Pfaffians.
Tutte Short Exact Sequences of Graphs

We associate two modules, the $G$-parking critical module and the toppling critical module, to an undirected connected graph $G$. The $G$-parking critical module and the toppling critical module are canonical modules (with suitable twists) of quotient rings of the well-studied $G$-parking function ideal and the toppling ideal, respectively. For each critical module, we establish a Tutte-like short exact sequence relating the modules associated to $G$, an edge contraction $G/e$ and an edge deletion $G \setminus e$ ($e$ is a non-bridge). We obtain purely combinatorial consequences of Tutte short exact sequences. For instance, we reprove a theorem of Merino that the critical polynomial of a graph is an evaluation of its Tutte polynomial, and relate the vanishing of certain combinatorial invariants (the number of acyclic orientations on connected partition graphs satisfying a unique sink property) of $G/e$ to the equality of the corresponding invariants of $G$ and $G \setminus e$.

In this paper we study algebraic and combinatorial properties of Grothendieck polynomials and their dual polynomials by means of the Boson-Fermion correspondence. We show that these symmetric functions can be expressed as a vacuum expectation value of some operator that is written in terms of free-fermions. By using the free-fermionic expressions, we obtain alternative proofs of determinantal formulas and Pieri type formulas.
Simplicial generation of Chow rings of matroids
We introduce a presentation of the Chow ring of a matroid by a new set of generators, called "simplicial generators." These generators are analogous to nef divisors on projective toric varieties, and admit a combinatorial interpretation via the theory of matroid quotients. Using this combinatorial interpretation, we (i) produce a bijection between a monomial basis of the Chow ring and a relative generalization of Schubert matroids, (ii) recover the Poincaré duality property, (iii) give a formula for the volume polynomial, which we show is log-concave in the positive orthant, and (iv) recover the validity of Hodge-Riemann relations in degree 1, which is the part of the Hodge theory of matroids that currently accounts for all combinatorial applications of [AHK18]. Our work avoids the use of "flips," the key technical tool employed in [AHK18].
A gap in the slice rank of $k$-tensors
The slice-rank method, introduced by Tao as a symmetrized version of the polynomial method of Croot, Lev and Pach and Ellenberg and Gijswijt, has proved to be a useful tool in a variety of combinatorial problems. Explicit tensors have been introduced in different contexts but little is known about the limitations of the method.
In this paper, building upon a method presented by Tao and Sawin, it is proved that the asymptotic slice rank of any $k$-tensor in any field is either $1$ or at least $k/(k-1)^{(k-1)/k}$. This provides evidence that straight-forward application of the method cannot give useful results in certain problems for which non-trivial exponential bounds are already known. An example, actually a motivation for starting this work, is the problem of bounding the size of trifferent sets of sequences, which constitutes a long-standing open problem in information theory and in theoretical computer science.
Antichain generating polynomials of posets
This paper gives a formula for the antichain generating polynomial $\mathcal{N}_{[k]\times Q}$ of the poset $[k]\times Q$, where $[k]$ is an arbitrary chain and $Q$ is any finite graded poset. When $Q$ specializes to be a connected minuscule poet, which was classified by Proctor in 1984, we find that the polynomial $\mathcal{N}_{[k]\times Q}$ bears nice properties. For instance, we will recover the $B_n$-Narayana polynomial and the $D_{2n+2}$-Narayana polynomial. We collect evidence for the conjecture that whenever $\mathcal{N}_{[k]\times P}(x)$ is palindromic, it must be $γ$-positive. Moreover, the family $\mathcal{N}_{[2]\times [n]\times [m]}$ should be real-rooted and $\mathcal{N}_{[2]\times [n]\times [n+1]}$ should be $γ$-positive. We also conjecture that $\mathcal{N}_{Q}(x)$ is log-concave (thus unimodal) for any connected Peck poset $Q$.
Cometric Association Schemes
One may think of a $d$-class association scheme as a $(d+1)$-dimensional matrix algebra over $\mathbb{R}$ closed under Schur products. In this context, an imprimitive scheme is one which admits a subalgebra of block matrices, also closed under the Schur product. Such systems of imprimitivity provide us with quotient schemes, smaller association schemes which are often easier to understand, providing useful information about the structure of the larger scheme. For any association scheme we find a basis of $d+1$ idempotent matrices for the algebra. A cometric scheme is one whose idempotent basis may be ordered $E_0,E_1,...,E_d$ with polynomials $f_0,f_1,...,f_d$ giving $f_i\circ(E_1)=E_i$ and deg$(f_i)=i$ for each $i$. Throughout this thesis we are primarily interested in three goals: building new examples of cometric schemes, drawing connections between cometric schemes and other objects, and finding new realizability conditions on feasible parameter sets --- using these conditions to rule out open parameter sets when possible. After introducing association schemes, this thesis focuses on a few recent results regarding cometric schemes with small $d$. We begin by examining the matrix algebra, looking for low rank positive semidefinite matrices with few distinct entries and later establishing new conditions on realizable parameter sets. We then focus on imprimitive examples of both 3- and 4-class cometric schemes, generating new examples of the former while building realizability conditions for both. In each case, we examine the related $t$-distance sets, giving conditions which work towards equivalence; in the case of 3-class $Q$-antipodal schemes an equivalence is established. We conclude by partially extending a result of Brouwer and Koolen concerning the connectivity of graphs arising from metric schemes.
Moments of moments of characteristic polynomials of random unitary matrices and lattice point counts
In this note we give a combinatorial and non-computational proof of the asymptotics of the integer moments of the moments of the characteristic polynomials of Haar distributed unitary matrices as the size of the matrix goes to infinity. This is achieved by relating these quantities to a lattice point count problem. Our main result is a new explicit expression for the leading order coefficient in the asymptotic as a volume of a certain region involving continuous Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns with constraints.
Finding Dominating Induced Matchings in $S_{1,1,5}$-Free Graphs in Polynomial Time
Let $G=(V,E)$ be a finite undirected graph. An edge set $E' \subseteq E$ is a {\em dominating induced matching} ({\em d.i.m.}) in $G$ if every edge in $E$ is intersected by exactly one edge of $E'$. The \emph{Dominating Induced Matching} (\emph{DIM}) problem asks for the existence of a d.i.m.\ in $G$; this problem is also known as the \emph{Efficient Edge Domination} problem; it is the Efficient Domination problem for line graphs.
The DIM problem is \NP-complete even for very restricted graph classes such as planar bipartite graphs with maximum degree 3 but is solvable in linear time for $P_7$-free graphs, and in polynomial time for $S_{1,2,4}$-free graphs as well as for $S_{2,2,2}$-free graphs and for $S_{2,2,3}$-free graphs. In this paper, combining two distinct approaches, we solve it in polynomial time for $S_{1,1,5}$-free graphs.
Positivity determines the quantum cohomology of Grassmannians
We prove that if X is a Grassmannian of type A, then the Schubert basis of the (small) quantum cohomology ring QH(X) is the only homogeneous deformation of the Schubert basis of the ordinary cohomology ring of X that multiplies with non-negative structure constants. This implies that the (three point, genus zero) Gromov-Witten invariants of X are uniquely determined by Witten's presentation of QH(X) and the fact that they are non-negative. We conjecture that the same is true for any flag variety X = G/P of simply laced Lie type. For the variety GL(n)/B of complete flags, this conjecture is equivalent to Fomin, Gelfand, and Postnikov's conjecture that the quantum Schubert polynomials of type A are uniquely determined by positivity properties. Our proof for Grassmannians answers a question of Fulton.

In a recent paper, Ayyer and Behrend present for a wide class of partitions factorizations of Schur polynomials with an even number of variables where half of the variables are the reciprocals of the others into symplectic and/or orthogonal group characters, thereby generalizing results of Ciucu and Krattenthaler for rectangular shapes. Their proofs proceed by manipulations of determinants underlying the characters. The purpose of the current paper is to provide bijective proofs of such factorizations. The quantities involved have known combinatorial interpretations in terms of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns of various types or half Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, which can in turn be transformed into perfect matchings of weighted trapezoidal honeycomb graphs. An important ingredient is then Ciucu's theorem for graphs with reflective symmetry. However, before being able to apply it, we need to employ a certain averaging procedure in order to achieve symmetric edge weights. This procedure is based on a "randomized" bijection, which can however also be turned into a classical bijection. For one type of Schur polynomial factorization, we also need an additional graph operation that almost doubles the underlying graph. Finally, our combinatorial proofs reveal that the factorizations under consideration can in fact also be generalized to skew shapes as discussed at the end of the paper.
On Restricted Ternary Words and Insets
We investigate combinatorial properties of a kind of insets we defined in an earlier paper, interpreting them now in terms of restricted ternary words. This allows us to give new combinatorial interpretations of a number of known integer sequences, namely the coefficients of Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds, Fibonacci numbers, Delannoy numbers, asymmetric Delannoy numbers, Sulanke numbers, coordinating sequences for some cubic lattices, crystal ball sequences for some cubic lattices, and others. We also obtain several new properties of said insets. In particular, we derive three generating functions when two of three variables are constant.
At the end, we state 40 combinatorial configurations counted by our words.
