Recently, Croot, Lev, and Pach (Ann. of Math., 185:331--337, 2017.) and Ellenberg and Gijswijt (Ann. of Math., 185:339--443, 2017.) developed a new polynomial method and used it to prove upper bounds for three-term arithmetic progression free sets in $\mathbb{Z}_4^n$ and $\mathbb{F}_3^n$, respectively.
Their approach was later summarized by Tao and is now known as the slice rank method.
In this paper, we apply this method to obtain a new upper bound on the cardinality of subsets of $\mathbb{F}^n_q$ which contain no right angles.
More precisely, let $q$ be a fixed odd prime power and $x\cdot y$ be the standard inner product of two vectors $x,y\in\mathbb{F}_q^n$, we prove that the maximum cardinality of a subset $A\subseteq\mathbb{F}_q^n$ without three distinct elements $x,y,z\in A$ satisfying $(z-x)\cdot (y-x)=0$ is at most $\binom{n+q}{q-1}+3$.
For sufficiently large $n$, our result significantly improves the previous upper bound of Bennett (European J.
Combin., 70:155--163, 2018.), who showed that $|A|=\mathcal{O}(q^{\frac{n+2}{3}})$.

We construct a non-normal affine monoid together with its modules associated with a negative definite plumbed $3$-manifold $M$. In terms of their structure, we describe the $H_1(M,\mathbb{Z})$-equivariant parts of the topological Poincaré series. In particular, we give combinatorial formulas for the Seiberg--Witten invariants of $M$ and for polynomial generalizations defined in a previous paper of the authors.

It was observed by Bump et al. that Ehrhart polynomials in a special family exhibit properties similar to the Riemann ζ function. The construction was generalized by Matsui et al. to a larger family of reflexive polytopes coming from graphs. We prove several conjectures confirming when such polynomials have zeros on a certain line in the complex plane. Our main new method is to prove a stronger property called interlacing.
Gradation in Greyscales of Graphs

In this work we present the notion of greyscale of a graph as a colouring of its vertices that uses colours from the real interval [0,1]. Any greyscale induces another colouring by assigning to each edge the non-negative difference between the colours of its vertices. These edge colours are ordered in lexicographical decreasing ordering and gives rise to a new element of the graph: the gradation vector. We introduce the notion of minimum gradation vector as a new invariant for the graph and give polynomial algorithms to obtain it. These algorithms also output all greyscales that produce the minimum gradation vector. This way we tackle and solve a novel vectorial optimization problem in graphs that may produce more satisfactory solutions than those ones generated by known scalar optimization approaches.
The interest of these new concepts lies in their possible applications for solving problems of engineering, physics and applied mathematics which are modeled according to a network whose nodes have assigned numerical values of a certain parameter delimited by a range of real numbers. The objective is to minimize the differences between each node and its neighbors, ensuring that the extreme values of the interval are assigned.

We study asymptotic distributions of large dimensional random matrices of the form $BB^{*}$, where $B$ is a product of $p$ rectangular random matrices, using free probability and combinatorics of colored labeled noncrossing partitions. These matrices are taken from the set of off-diagonal blocks of the family $\mathcal{Y}$ of independent Hermitian random matrices which are asymptotically free, asymptotically free against the family of deterministic diagonal matrices, and whose norms are uniformly bounded almost surely. This class includes unitarily invariant Hermitian random matrices with limit distributions given by compactly supported probability measures $ν$ on the real line. We express the limit moments in terms of colored labeled noncrossing pair partitions, to which we assign weights depending on even free cumulants of $ν$ and on asymptotic dimensions of blocks (Gaussianization). For products of $p$ independent blocks, we show that the limit moments are linear combinations of a new family of polynomials called generalized multivariate Fuss-Narayana polynomials. In turn, the product of two blocks of the same matrix leads to an example with rescaled Raney numbers.

The Moore bound $M(k,g)$ is a lower bound on the order of $k$-regular graphs of girth $g$ (denoted $(k,g)$-graphs). The excess $e$ of a $(k,g)$-graph of order $n$ is the difference $ n-M(k,g) $. In this paper we consider the existence of $(k,g)$-bipartite graphs of excess $4$ via studying spectral properties of their adjacency matrices. We prove that the $(k,g)$-bipartite graphs of excess $4$ satisfy the equation $kJ=(A+kI)(H_{d-1}(A)+E)$, where $A$ denotes the adjacency matrix of the graph in question, $J$ the $n \times n$ all-ones matrix, $E$ the adjacency matrix of a union of vertex-disjoint cycles, and $H_{d-1}(x)$ is the Dickson polynomial of the second kind with parameter $k-1$ and of degree $d-1$. We observe that the eigenvalues other than $\pm k$ of these graphs are roots of the polynomials $H_{d-1}(x)+λ$, where $λ$ is an eigenvalue of $E$. Based on the irreducibility of $H_{d-1}(x)\pm2$ we give necessary conditions for the existence of these graphs.
If $E$ is the adjacency matrix of a cycle of order $n$ we call the corresponding graphs \emph{graphs with cyclic excess}; if $E$ is the adjacency matrix of a disjoint union of two cycles we call the corresponding graphs \emph{graphs with bicyclic excess}. In this paper we prove the non-existence of $(k,g)$-graphs with cyclic excess $4$ if $k\geq6$ and $k \equiv1 \!\! \pmod {3}$, $g=8, 12, 16$ or $k \equiv2 \!\! \pmod {3}$, $g=8,$ and the non-existence of $(k,g)$-graphs with bicyclic excess $4$ if $k\geq7$ is odd number and $g=2d$ such that $d\geq4$ is even.
Readability of digraphs and bipartite graphs
In the final project paper we consider a graph parameter called readability. Motivation for readability comes from bioinformatics applications. Graphs arising in problems related to genome sequencing are of small readability, which motivates the study of graphs of small readability. We present an algorithm due to Braga and Meidanis, which shows that every digraph is isomorphic to the overlap graph of some set of strings. An upper bound on readability is derived from the algorithm. The readability parameter can also be defined for bipartite graphs; in the final project paper special emphasis is given to the bipartite model. The complexity of computing the readability of a given digraph (or of a given bipartite graph) is unknown. A way for the exact computation of readability is presented using Integer Linear Programming. We also present two approaches for computing upper and lower bounds for readability due to Chikhi at al. Finally, the readability is computed exactly for toroidal and two-dimensional grid graphs and a polynomial time algorithm for constructing an optimal overlap labeling of a given two-dimensional or toroidal grid graph is presented.

When $Sp(2n,\mathbb{C})$ acts on the flag variety of $SL(2n,\mathbb{C})$, the orbits are in bijection with fixed point free involutions in the symmetric group $S_{2n}$. In this case, the associated Kazhdan-Lusztig-Vogan polynomials $P_{v,u}$ can be indexed by pairs of fixed point free involutions $v\geq u$, where $\geq$ denotes the Bruhat order on $S_{2n}$. We prove that these polynomials are combinatorial invariants in the sense that if $f: [u, w_0 ] \rightarrow [u , w_0]$ is a poset isomorphism of upper intervals in the Bruhat order on fixed point free involutions, then $P_{v,u} = P_{f(v),u}$ for all $v \geq u$.
Stirling permutations, marked permutations and Stirling derangements
In this paper we introduce the definition of marked permutations. We first present a bijection between Stirling permutations and marked permutations. We then present an involution on Stirling derangements. Furthermore, we present a symmetric bivariate enumerative polynomials on $r$-colored marked permutations. Finally, we give an explanation of $r$-colored marked permutations by using the language of combinatorial objects.
Neural Ideal Preserving Homomorphisms

The neural ideal of a binary code $\mathbb{C} \subseteq \mathbb{F}_2^n$ is an ideal in $\mathbb{F}_2[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$ closely related to the vanishing ideal of $\mathbb{C}$. The neural ideal, first introduced by Curto et al, provides an algebraic way to extract geometric properties of realizations of binary codes. In this paper we investigate homomorphisms between polynomial rings $\mathbb{F}_2[x_1,\ldots, x_n]$ which preserve all neural ideals. We show that all such homomorphisms can be decomposed into a composition of three basic types of maps. Using this decomposition, we can interpret how these homomorphisms act on the underlying binary codes. We can also determine their effect on geometric realizations of these codes using sets in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We also describe how these homomorphisms affect a canonical generating set for neural ideals, yielding an efficient method for computing these generators in some cases.
Modeling the maximum edge-weight k-plex partitioning problem
Given a sparse undirected graph G with weights on the edges, a k-plex partition of G is a partition of its set of nodes such that each component is a k-plex. A subset of nodes S is a k-plex if the degree of every node in the associated induced subgraph is at least |S|-k. The maximum edge-weight k-plex partitioning (Max-EkPP) problem is to find a k-plex partition with maximum total weight, where the partition's weight is the sum of the weights on the edges in the solution. When k=1, all components in the partition are cliques and the problem becomes the well-known maximum edge-weight clique partitioning (Max-ECP). However, and to our best knowledge, when k>1, the problem has never been modeled. Actually, the literature on the k-plex addresses the search for a single component in an unweighted graph. We propose a polynomial size integer linear programming formulation for the Max-EkPP problem and consider the inclusion of additional topological constraints in the model. These constraints involve lower and upper limit capacity bounds in each component and upper bound constraints on the number of components in the final solution. All these characterizations preserve linearity and the initial polynomial size of the model. We also present computational tests in order to show the models' performance under different parameters' settings. These tests resort to benchmark and real-world graphs.
Parabolic Catalan numbers count flagged Schur functions; Convexity of tableau sets for Demazure characters
Shuffles are n-multipermutations with suit multiplicities given by a subset R of {1,..,n-1}. Their inverses are ordered partitions of {1,..,n} whose block sizes derive from R. These "R-permutations" depict the min length coset reps for the quotient of S_n by the parabolic subgroup W_J, with J the complement of R. We refer to those that blockwise avoid the pattern 312 as "312-avoiding R-permutations" and define the "parabolic R-Catalan number" to be the number of them. Let lambda be a partition of N with at most n parts whose set of shape column lengths less than n is R. We show that the number of flagged Schur functions formed on the shape of lambda is this parabolic R-Catalan number, and list over a dozen other phenomena that are enumerated by it. Let pi be an R-permutation. We view the Demazure character (key polynomial) indexed by (lambda,pi) as the sum of the content weight monomials for our "pi-Demazure" semistandard tableaux of shape lambda with entries from {1,..,n}. We show that the set of these tableaux is convex in Z^N if and only if pi is a 312-avoiding R-permutation. A flagged Schur function is the sum of the content weight monomials for the semistandard tableaux of shape lambda whose entries are row-wise bounded by a given weakly increasing n-tuple. We consider general row bound sums for which the bounds may be any n-tuple. Reiner and Shimozono and then Postnikov and Stanley obtained results concerning coincidences between flagged Schur functions and Demazure characters: when lambda is strict, the flagged Schur functions exactly coincide with the 312-avoiding Demazure characters. For general lambda we introduce precise indexing sets of n-tuple bounds for the row bound sums. This and our convexity results are used to sharpen their coincidence results, to extend them to general row bound sums, and to show they hold at the deeper level of coinciding underlying tableau sets.
On the absolute irreducibility of hyperplane sections of generalized Fermat varieties in $\Bbb{P}^3$ and the conjecture on exceptional APN functions: the Kasami-Welch degree case
Let $f$ be a function on a finite field $F$. The decomposition of the generalized Fermat variety $X$ defined by the multivariate polynomial of degree $n$, $φ(x,y,z)=f(x)+f(y)+f(z)$ in $\Bbb{P}^3(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_2)$, plays a crucial role in the study of almost perfect non-linear (APN) functions and exceptional APN functions. Their structure depends fundamentally on the Fermat varieties corresponding to the monomial functions of exceptional degrees $n=2^k+1$ and $n=2^{2k}-2^k+1$ (Gold and Kasami-Welch numbers, respectively). Very important results for these have been obtained by Janwa, McGuire and Wilson in [12,13]. In this paper we study $X$ related to the Kasami-Welch degree monomials and its decomposition into absolutely irreducible components. We show that, in this decomposition, the components intersect transversally at a singular point.
This structural fact implies that the corresponding generalized Fermat hypersurfaces, related to Kasami-Welch degree polynomial families, are absolutely irreducible. In particular, we prove that if $f(x)=x^{2^{2k}-2^k+1}+h(x)$, where ${\rm deg}(h)\equiv 3{\pmod 4}$, then the corresponding APN multivariate hypersurface is absolutely irreducible, and hence $f(x)$ is not exceptional APN function. We also prove conditional result in the case when ${\rm deg}(h)\equiv 5{\pmod 8}$. Since for odd degree $f(x)$, the conjecture needs to be resolved only for the Gold degree and the Kasami-Welch degree cases our results contribute substantially to the proof of the conjecture on exceptional APN functions---in the hardest case: the Kasami-Welch degree.

Polyzetas, indexed by words, satisfy shuffle and quasi-shuffle identities. In this respect, one can explore the multiplicative and algorithmic (locally finite) properties of their generating series. In this paper, we construct pairs of bases in duality on which polyzetas are established in order to compute local coordinates in the infinite dimensional Lie groups where their non-commutative generating series live. We also propose new algorithms leading to the ideal of polynomial relations, homogeneous in weight, among polyzetas (the graded kernel) and their explicit representation (as data structures) in terms of irreducible elements.
Counterexamples on spectra of sign patterns

An $n\times n$ sign pattern $S$, which is a matrix with entries $0,+,-$, is called spectrally arbitrary if any monic real polynomial of degree $n$ can be realized as a characteristic polynomial of a matrix obtained by replacing the non-zero elements of $S$ by numbers of the corresponding signs. A sign pattern $S$ is said to be a superpattern of those matrices that can be obtained from $S$ by replacing some of the non-zero entries by zeros. We develop a new technique that allows us to prove spectral arbitrariness of sign patterns for which the previously known "Nilpotent Jacobian" method does not work. Our approach leads us to solutions of numerous open problems known in the literature. In particular, we provide an example of a sign pattern $S$ and its superpattern $S'$ such that $S$ is spectrally arbitrary but $S'$ is not, disproving a conjecture proposed in 2000 by Drew, Johnson, Olesky, and van den Driessche.

In this paper, we present a uniform formula for the integration of polynomials over the unitary, orthogonal, and symplectic groups using Weingarten calculus. From this description, we further simplify the integration formulas and give several optimizations for various cases. We implemented the optimized Weingarten calculus in Maple in a package called IntHaar for all three compact groups. Here we will discuss its functions, provide instructions for the package, and produce some examples of computed integrals.

We consider the problem of existence and enumeration of primitive TSRs of order n over any finite field. Here we prove the existence of primitive TSRs of order two over finite fields of characteristic two and establish an equivalence between primitive TSRs and primitive polynomials of special form. A conjecture regarding the existence of these special type of primitive polynomials is submitted by us along with some experimental verification. Further we have attempted to enumerate primitive TSRs of order two over finite fields of characteristic two. Finally we give a general search algorithm for primitive TSRs of odd order over any finite field and in particular of order two over fields of characteristic two.
Properness of nilprogressions and the persistence of polynomial growth of given degree

We show that an arbitrary nilprogression can be approximated by a proper coset nilprogression in upper-triangular form. This can be thought of as a nilpotent version of the Freiman-Bilu result that a generalised arithmetic progression can be efficiently contained in a proper generalised arithmetic progression, and indeed an important ingredient in the proof is a Lie-algebra version of the geometry-of-numbers argument at the centre of that result. We also present some applications. We verify a conjecture of Benjamini that if $S$ is a symmetric generating set for a group such that $1\in S$ and $|S^n|\le Mn^D$ at some sufficiently large scale $n$ then $S$ exhibits polynomial growth of the same degree $D$ at all subsequent scales, in the sense that $|S^r|\ll_{M,D}r^D$ for every $r\ge n$. Our methods also provide an important ingredient in a forthcoming companion paper in which we reprove and sharpen a result about scaling limits of vertex-transitive graphs of polynomial growth due to Benjamini, Finucane and the first author. We also note that our arguments imply that every approximate group has a large subset with a large quotient that is Freiman isomorphic to a subset of a torsion-free nilpotent group of bounded rank and step.
Nash Social Welfare for Indivisible Items under Separable, Piecewise-Linear Concave Utilities

Recently Cole and Gkatzelis gave the first constant factor approximation algorithm for the problem of allocating indivisible items to agents, under additive valuations, so as to maximize the Nash Social Welfare. We give constant factor algorithms for a substantial generalization of their problem -- to the case of separable, piecewise-linear concave utility functions. We give two such algorithms, the first using market equilibria and the second using the theory of stable polynomials.
In AGT, there is a paucity of methods for the design of mechanisms for the allocation of indivisible goods and the result of Cole and Gkatzelis seemed to be taking a major step towards filling this gap. Our result can be seen as another step in this direction.
Triangulating Almost-Complete Graphs
A triangle decomposition of a graph $G$ is a partition of the edges of $G$ into triangles. Two necessary conditions for $G$ to admit such a decomposition are that $|E(G)|$ is a multiple of three and that the degree of any vertex in $G$ is even; we call such graphs tridivisible.
Kirkman's work on Steiner triple systems established that for $G \simeq K_n$, $G$ admits a triangle decomposition precisely when $G$ is tridivisible. In 1970, Nash-Williams conjectured that tridivisiblity is also sufficient for "almost-complete" graphs, which for this talk's purposes we interpret as any graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $δ(G) \geq (1 -ε)n, E(G) \geq (1 - ξ)\binom{n}{2}$ for some appropriately small constants $ε, ξ$. Nash-Williams conjectured that $ε= ξ=1/4$ would suffice; in 1991, Gustavsson demonstrated in his dissertation that $ε= ξ< 10^{-24}$ suffices for all $n \equiv 3, 9 \mod 18$, and in 2015 Keevash's work on the existence conjecture for combinatorial designs established that some value of $ε$ existed for any $n$.
In this paper, we prove that for any $ε< \frac{1}{432}$, there is a constant $ξ$ such that any $G$ with $δ(G) \geq (1 - ε)n$ and $|E(G)| \geq (1 - ξ)\binom{n}{2}$ admits such a decomposition, and offer an algorithm that explicitly constructs such a triangulation. Moreover, we note that our algorithm runs in polynomial time on such graphs. (This last observation contrasts with Holyer's result that finding triangle decompositions in general is a NP-complete problem.)
